Details of the new BlackBerry Messenger are leaking out all over the internet today, and what we're seeing is an app that could make your CrackBerry even more impossible to put away. iTunes 10.1.2 update enables support for Verizon iPhone
Apple has released an iTunes 10.1.2 update for both Mac and Windows users. The primary addition is support for the Verizon iPhone, which launches on February 10th. Apple has released iTunes 10.1.2, the latest version of its digital media management software. iPhone 4 glass spawns class action lawsuit
Apple faces a class action lawsuit from California resident Donald LeBuhn over the glass used in the company's popular iPhone 4 handset. LeBuhn accuses Apple of misleading customers by pointing to Apple's website which boasts that the glass used on the iPhone 4 is "20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic." LeBuhn disputes this and other claims of durability in his lawsuit which states:
"Months after selling millions of iPhone 4s, Apple has failed to warn and continues to sell this product with no warning to customers that the glass housing is defective."

Amazon celebrates its first '$10 billion quarter' in sales, finds Kindle books overtaking paperbacks
July 19, 2010 marked the day that Amazon's digital book sales eclipsed the sales of hardcover books, and it barely took half a year for those e-book sales to also overtake the sales of paperbacks. According to the ouftit's latest earnings release, "Kindle books have now overtaken paperback books as the most popular format on Amazon.com." Microsoft results beat on PCs, slump on phones
Microsoft today posted results that passed well over expectations. It posted a high $6.63 billion in profit and, despite the iPad effect and the absence of an OS launch, outperformed predictions on Windows. The OS and its Live subset earned $5.04 billion where most had expected just over $4.9 billion. Its Office-focused business team and its server team also earned more than first thought.

Apple is currently busy on college campuses recruiting for its At-Home Advisor program, accounts say. The company is reported to be handing out flyers describing the job as well as touting some of its advantages. Macworld 2011: DriveSavers talks about SSD recovery
I spoke with Chris Bross of DriveSavers about recovery of data from SSD (solid-state drive) storage at their booth. Currently SSDs are in their third generation with reliability improving all the time. An SSD is comprised of two parts -- the NAND memory and the controller. The NAND is more or less a commodity so the real work is done by the controller. Controllers are made by a handful of companies and according to Chris, controllers have to get smarter.
The Macbook Air uses Toshiba SSDs which are considered in the market to be middle of the road -- consistent for Apple storage. A main difference between SSDs and hard drives are that before data can be written to an SSD the block

Splice iPhone video editor does iMovie tricks for free (video)
We've no real qualms with iMovie for iOS -- for a phone-based editor, it's fairly impressive. But of course, it does cost money to own, and for some, that's a major issue. Thankfully for those uninterested in ever spending a dime in the App Store, there's Splice. Microsoft announces Q2 earnings: $8.17b profit, Xbox revenue up 55%, Windows down 29%
Microsoft just announced it's had itself a solid second quarter, posting an $8.17 billion profit on record revenues of $19.95 billion. That's more or less about the same as last year, when it racked up an $8.5 billion profit on $19 billion in revenue -- and while the numbers look stable and Redmond managed to slightly beat estimates, things are changing fast underneath the bottom line: strong Kinect and Xbox 360 sales drove Entertainment and Devices Division revenue up 55 percent to $3.6 billion, but Windows and Windows Live revenue fell nearly 30 percent to $5.05 billion. That means the revenue gap between Microsoft's consumer device business and the Windows business is now just some $1.3 billion, compared to $4.8 billion this time last year -- and it undoubtedly explains why

Intel Emcrest SSDs may hit 450MB per second
A possible leak this week may have confirmed that Intel is ramping up a very high performance SSD for the near future. The Intel 510, also known by its Emcrest codename, would hit speeds of 450MB per second for peak reads and 300MB per second for writes. The performance slipped to Fudzilla would be nearly double the performance of Intel's best drive line, the X25-E, which reaches 250MB and 170MB per second in each area.

Updated TUAW application now available in the App Store
It's here! The iPhone update all faithful TUAW readers have been asking about (and asking about) is now available in the App Store. Although it's not universal for the iPad (sorry!), it does up the ante with many notable improvements including support for Retina Display resolutions. The app also lets you share news, photos, videos and other tech stories via Twitter, Facebook and e-mail.

Best App Ever winners announced, Angry Birds wins big
148Apps' own Jeff Scott just handed me an actual piece of paper here in the Macworld press room, and on it there are all of the Best App Ever winners listed. You can read the full list online in PDF form, but we'll spoil a few of them for you. Best App Ever for 2010? None other than a little app you may have heard of called Angry Birds. Sure, it's not a choice too far off the reservation, but you have to admit that in terms of exposure and playtime, there was no real equal. Chillingo and Clickgamer also walked away with the most wins -- Angry Birds showed up on the list 7 times in its various forms, and Cut the Rope also nabbed an award for Best Puzzle Game.

Al Franken calls net neutrality the 'free speech issue of our time,' proposes stricter FCC regulations
We hate to see something we hold as dear to our hearts as the internet become so deeply mired in politics, but this whole net neutrality thing is serious business. White iPhone 4 to be more expensive than black?
The white iPhone 4 could potentially cost buyers extra, listings at Orange France suggest. Pages on the carrier's website already depict 16 and 32GB white models, even though Apple has yet to announce the color as a shipping option. Orange is notably applying a €20 premium, for instance raising the cost of a 32GB phone from €299 to €319 on a two-year contract.

Ongo for iPad is a good start but far from a home run
We told you yesterday that Ongo was on the way to the iPad, and now it's in the app store and I've had some time to play with it. Ongo is a joint venture by several newspaper companies to create a paid, ad-free news aggregator that is easy to use and will appeal to the news junkie.
After some hours using the app, I found it attractively designed and easy to use. You can see and share top stories from several publications like the New York Times, USA Today, and the Washington Post. The app doesn't cache much, so reading offline does not appear to be an option. You can save stories, called clippings, but once saved I could not retrieve them without a data connection. Final Draft coming for iPhone and iPad in Spring 2011
Popular screenwriting tool Final Draft is finally making its way to the iPhone and iPad. The company confirmed last year that it was working on a companion iPad and iPhone application and that app is now close to being finished. While the company has not announced an exact date for launch, a recent email sent to subscribers points to a Spring 2011 debut for its iPad and presumably iPhone version.
According to Final Draft's Facebook page, the iOS app will be compatible with version 8 FDX files and will support two-way transfer so you can easily move your script from your iOS to your desktop and back. O2 plans free and open WiFi network across the UK, Sky picks up The Cloud
Only a handful of Muni-Fi projects ended in anything greater than eternal tears here in the States, but hopefully O2's up for the challenge across the pond. The UK carrier just announced its intentions to "refine the WiFi landscape" in its home nation by launching O2 WiFi, with a raft of "premium hotspots" to be rolled out and managed by key venue owners. Nikon event slated for February 9, Coolpix P500 likely
Nikon will be holding press conferences in multiple countries on February 9, 2011, a date which also coincides with the opening of the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show in Japan. Skype 5.0 hits Mac with group video calling, streamlined interface

FCC designates Google, others to manage white space wireless
The FCC in an order on Thursday approved nine companies to be curators of the database for the newly opened up white space wireless. Google led the group and was joined by Comsearch, Frequency Finder, KB Enterprises and LS Telcom, Key Bridge, Neustar, Spectrum Bridge, Telcordia Technologies and WSdb. The firms will have knowledge of which frequencies are available in given areas and clear devices for use in those areas.

iPhone bound to hit more Asian carriers, analysts say
The iPhone has had an "extraordinary" reception in Asia, "on par with the US some cases," according to analysts Toni Sacconaghi and Sanford Bernstein of Bernstein Research. The pair point to recent IDC data in particular, which indicates that the iPhone now forms 12 percent of all Japanese cellphone sales, not just smartphones. Google engineering VP Vic Gundotra and Apple marketing VP Phil Schiller came into intense conflict over Google Maps in 2008, according to sources cited by Bloomberg and 9to5Mac. I didn't even really like Superman when that picture was taken. I think I was three or four and well on my way to being a fat kid. I mean, sure, the movies were boss, and Christopher Reeve was the man -- all suave and all-powerful -- but I didn't know Kal-El from a candy cane. I liked his costume, though, and of course I knew that he was super strong and could fly.

Apple Germany inadvertently spurred on talk of the white iPhone 4's arrival with a brief appearance on the country's iPhone comparison page. Although it only appeared for a few minutes, the site showed a version of the page with colors once again a category and the iPhone 4 available in white. AT&T activates 4.1 million iPhones in Q4 2010
AT&T announced its quarterly earnings and confirmed that it activated 4.1 million iPhones in the final quarter of 2010. This number is down 1.1 million from the 5.2 million activated in Q3 2010. The wireless carrier posted its best-ever quarterly growth with the addition of 2.8 million net subscribers. Yearly, the company added 8.9 million net subscribers .
The wireless carrier overtook Verizon Wireless as the nation's largest wireless carrier last year, with 95.5 million subscribers versus Verizon's 94.1 million. Imagine how many accidents could be avoided if we all had perfect X-Ray vision -- assuming, of course, that everyone could refrain from being distracted by all the naked pedestrians. Drivers would never be surprised by rapidly slowing traffic, cars broken down around blind curves, or autos zooming into blind spots. Estimate has iPhone holding off Android for No. 1 until 2012
eMarketer put out an estimate on Thursday that gave Apple one more year in the lead for US smartphone market share. It had the iPhone increasing its market share to 30 percent in 2011 and fending off Android's 28 percent. Volvo set to unveil V60 Plug-in at Geneva, pledges to be slightly less naughty
The new V60 is billed by its creators as being a "naughty Volvo," and while the reviews we've read of its sedan counterpart haven't exactly found it to be particularly uncouth, we're thinking the upcoming plug-in wagon version should be even more friendly. Apple investigates hover gestures
Apple was awarded a patent on Tuesday for a hover sensitive device that accepts input from finger movements above the device's display. The patent describes the usage of "real-world" gestures to control a device equipped with a touch or hover-sensitive display. Hand and finger movements include knock to inquire gestures, circle to select gestures, X to delete gestures and more. Besides performing operations, these gestures could identify users and restrict access to sensitive files, directories and applications.

Wir rätseln hier intern noch rum in welcher Situation man diese Miniboomboxen von JVC genau brauchen kann, was vermutlich am Mangel an Freestyle-Rappern auf der Straße in unseren Breitengraden liegt. Die beiden können nämlich jenseits von plärrend wohltuendem Sound in 192Kbps auf die interne microSD aufnehmen, und zählen einen sogar an und haben für allen Überfluß auch noch ein Metronom und einen Klinken-Input für Gitarre oder Ähnliches. Apple has removed the Nazi Party anthem from the German version of the iTunes Store, Reuters reports. Called the Horst Wessel Lied, the song is officially banned in Germany except for educational purposes. Skype today caught the Mac up on versions on Thursday with the polished release of Skype 5 for Mac. The new version is the first for Apple's platform to support group video calling and handles as many as 10 simultaneous people in a slightly iChat-influenced full-screen mode. Tried searching for "BitTorrent," "RapidShare," "uTorrent," "MegaUpload" or even "Ubuntu torrent" lately? Good luck finding a Google domain that'll autocomplete those results for you. Presumably caving to pleading from the MPAA and / or RIAA, El Goog has quietly begun to censor the results it shows when typing the above terms. Apple has this week won a new patent from the USPTO, titled Detecting and interpreting real-world and security gestures on touch and hover sensitive devices. The concept expands on the multi-touch gestures possible with capacitive touchscreens. LG posts Q4 results, 2010 profit down 93 percent, cellphone sales down 15 percent

Lenovo and NEC join forces on PCs, tablets
Lenovo and NEC on Thursday confirmed a rumored deal to merge their PC businesses in Japan. The resulting NEC Lenovo Japan Group will be the largest single computer maker in the country and will see the two work together on not just developing computers but on future tablets. Both companies will keep using their brand names on home devices but should also help Japanese companies sell hardware beyond the island and sell servers.

If you are thinking about buying a MacBook Pro, the tea leaves suggest that you might want to wait before you pull out your wallet.

Engadget-US hat die erste öffentlich zugängliche Vorschau von Googles Tablet-Betriebssystem Android 3.0 Honeycomb installiert und ausprobiert. Wie auch schon frühere Android-SDK-Emulatoren ist der von Honeycomb extrem langsam und dadurch nahezu unbrauchbar. Der Browser sieht zwar toll aus, insbesondere das UI, lässt sich deswegen aber kaum benutzen. Zugang zum Android Market oder Gmail gibt es keinen, somit lässt sich auch nicht zeigen, wie sich Apps auf der Platform darstellen. Skype has announced that the latest version of its communication software is out of beta and ready for download. The beta version of Skype 5 for Mac has been available for a little while now, but this is the final version they've settled on, featuring a more minimal interface with simpler views, less whitespace and more information about contacts and communications all condensed in one place.

AT&T activates 4.1m iPhones in last pre-Verizon quarter
AT&T had its best fall ever for growth today as a send-off for its US iPhone exclusivity. It added 2.8 million total new subscribers and overtook Verizon to become the largest US carrier, with 95.5 million people. Its iPhone adds weren't as high as in the summer but were still its best for the fall, jumping from 3.1 million a year ago to 4.1 million at the end of 2010.

We are live on the ground in San Francisco this week for Macworld 2011, and one of our first meetings was with Navigon, which has reinvented itself in the US over the past few years, going from a company that makes personal navigation devices to strictly a software company thanks to the MobileNavigator iOS app and its variants. The overall smartphone nav app market has grown by 117 percent in the last few years, and largely due to the iPhone app (which reached 1 million downloads last August, a number made much more impressive when you realize the app usually sells for US$50 and up), that's pushed Navigon's own growth hugely as well.

The turn-by-turn navigation specialists at Navigon are pairing up their MobileNavigator iPhone app with an official Car Kit today, debuting at MacWorld out in San Francisco. Qualcomm has best quarter ever, teases a host of Snapdragon tablets
If you've got a speedy Snapdragon in your smartphone, Qualcomm's the one to thank -- but considering the raw earnings figures shared yesterday, your dollars have applauded the firm enough already. Qualcomm reported record earnings of $3.35 billion for its first fiscal quarter of the year, up 25 percent since Q1 2010, and it raked in a nice fat $1.17 billion of that in profit, 39 percent more than last year. That's thanks to shipping 118 million of those Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chips that power mobile devices, as well as other ventures, and the company expects revenues to continue their upward bent as 2011 progresses -- thanks to new devices on the way.

Nokia shrinks to 31% share in fall; needs to 'change faster'
Nokia on Thursday reported fall results that underscored a rapidly falling influence in the market. The company kept its lead and shipped 123.7 million phones in the last quarter of 2010, but the shipments represented a three percent drop where some rivals have been growing. It dropped from 35 percent market share a year ago to an estimated 31 percent this year as it expected the rest of the industry had grown by 12 percent.

Stephen Elop's first quarterly results as Nokia CEO have just come out, and while the company's still growing, others seem to be speeding ahead of it. Eldar Murtazin tries LG G-Slate, has yet to see 3D
Eldar Murtazin the Russian tech blogger known to get early access to pre-release devices has been previewing the forthcoming LG G-Slate. Nintendo reports quarterly results, profits down 46 percent
Nintendo has reported its October to December quarterly results, which have arrived below analystsí estimates. Profits fell 46 percent on the back of stalling DS handheld console sales and stiffer competition from both Sony and Microsoft who both recently debuted motion-controlled interfaces. Nintendo returned an operating profit of $1.3 billion, down from $2.3 in the year ago quarter.

Die neue PSP hört auf den Namen NGP und ist bis zum Rand voll mit neuen Funktionalitäten: 5"Touchscreen (960x544p), 3G, WIFi, GPS, ein Touchpad auf der Rückseite, Beschleunigungssensor, Gyrosensor, Kompass und Kameras sowohl vorne als auch hinten.
Dazu kommen zwei Quadcore-Prozessoren: ein ARM Cortex A9 und ein zweiter für die Grafikleistung. So ausgestattet will Sony die Entertainment-Konzepte der PSP2 angemessen umsetzen: ein neues Interface, sozaile Netzwerke und die entsprechende Integration, Augmented Reality und Orts-basierte Services. Die neue PSP wird frühestens Weihnachten 2011 auf den Markt kommen.

You know that crazy next-gen PSP with multiple touchpads, dual analog sticks, and quadrupled resolution that Sony just trotted out? Yeah, it's got a quad-core Cortex-A9 doing the gruntwork within. Color us overwhelmed with excitement. Then again, considering the darn thing won't be launching until this holiday season, maybe quad-core is the least Sony will need to do to match up to "super phones" coming up this year. Fujitsu has revamped its ultra-portable scanner, debuting the ScanSnap S1100 at Macworld 2011. The bar-shaped scanner now weighs just 12.3 ounces and measures 10.74 inches long by 1.87 inches wide and 1.33 inches tall, making it possible to easily carry it in a briefcase or purse, and requires only a single USB port for power. Sony reveals PlayStation Suite, the PlayStation experience for
Sony just dropped a bomb on the Japanese stage -- not a single PlayStation Phone, but a PlayStation Phone experience for everybody. The company just announced a cross-platform software framework called PlayStation Suite, which emulates first-generation PSP titles across a wide variety of devices. Sony's calling it a "hardware-neutral" development framework to bring games to mobile devices, complete with touchscreen controls if you don't have a pop-out gamepad handy, and as part and parcel of this mobile agenda, it's bringing a PlayStation Store to Android devices.

Recycling: Making an old G4 into a wall clock
Feeling the need to liven up a break room at work, MacNN reader Justin Moore took an old Power Mac G4, gutted the insides, and turned it into a wall clock, complete with swinging mouse pendulum which plays the Mac startup chime every hour. The transformation is documented with photographs on the website and involved stripped the G4 of all of its internal components, which were parted out to other machines. The back panel, which was also removed to further reduce weight, has been made into another clock.

Verizon iPhone preorders will start at 3 a.m. February 3
MacRumors received an e-mail from Verizon saying that the carrier will begin its preorder sales of the iPhone at 3 a.m. EST on February 3, just over a week from now.
The February 3 preorder date is just for current Verizon Wireless customers who have their My Verizon account set up. Preorders are limited, so once they're gone, Verizon's preexisting customers will have to wait until the February 10 general sale date.
MacRumors said that Verizon is allowing some AT&T iPhone customers to trade in their phones for credit if they make the switch to the Verizon iPhone. At the same time, AT&T

Verizon corporate customers getting iPhone a week early?
Corporate customers of Verizon may be able to buy the iPhone 4 a week ahead of the general public, a report on MacRumors asserts. The site mentions an e-mail to corporate customers which states that orders will be accepted starting at 3 a.m. eastern standard time on February 3rd, but cautions that quantities for the exclusive offer will be limited and once it runs out, corporate customers will have to purchase iPhones through the normal channels starting Feb. 10th, the official launch date.

Final XServe orders not shipping until April?
A MacNN reader has noticed that Apple's listed ship dates for XServes ordered now -- just days before the hardware is discontinued -- is posted as "April," meaning up to a four-month delay between paying for the units and actually receiving them. Orders for XServes must be finalized by February 1st, but the unusually long delay before fulfillment leaves questions as to whether the company experienced a "run" on their remaining inventory and must now gear up to make another lot in order to fulfill outstanding orders.

Sony about to issue PS3 update with 'minor,' mysterious security patch
Sony just mentioned on its official PlayStation blog that the PS3 is about to get a "minor" update, v3.56. Sony unveils massive MDR-XB1000 headphones in Japan
Sony Japan has introduced over-ear headphones that features the largest drivers so far available -- 70mm, or 2.75 inches in diameter -- called the MDR-XB1000, aimed at fans of music with deep bass and boasting an incredible 2-30,000Hz frequency range. The company also brought out two different lines of earbud-style headphones available in a range of colors and called the MDR-XB41EX and MDR-XB21EX, also with extra bass response. The new models will be released in Japan on February 10th, and hopefully appear in the US and other countries shortly afterward.

New paint supposedly fixes white iPhone production issue
Recent sightings of the white iPhone 4 in inventory systems suggest the release of the elusive handset may be imminent. Another report from Japanese blog Macotakara lends credence to these earlier leaks by claiming the paint problems that plagued the white iPhone 4 have been solved. According to the report, a Japanese company developed a process that lets the manufacturer set the thickness of an applied painting layer. Computech has loosed a new version of its business management software, releasing BusinessMan 3.0 today. The software handles most aspects of a business, from its resource planning with CRM capabilities to estimating and invoicing to resource scheduling. MacBook Pro may be low on stock ahead of Sandy Bridge update

Former Newsweek Magazine President Mark Edmiston is planning to launch a set of magazines formatted for the iPad, according to a report out from Mashable today. Nomad Editions, a new media company launched by Edmiston, started releasing five digital weekly magazines this past fall -- Real Eats, Wave Lines, Wide Screen, u+me, and BodySmart -- with the newest title u+me coming in February 2011. Each title is offered as a free trial for four editions/weeks, and after that the price is US $6.00 per 90 days or $2 per month -- a pretty fair price for a weekly magazine.

HP Envy 14 Radiance displays sold out... forever
Yep, it's a sad tale, but HP's run out of those glorious 1600 x 900-resolution, 350nit Radiance displays for its Envy 14 once and for all. As you may recall, they did come back in stock for a short time, but HP tells us that limited supply has dried up and that there are no plans right now to restock the inventory. Along with its discussion of the Verizon iPhone's impact, Motorola during its fiscal results call confirmed some of its launch strategy for tablets beyond the Xoom and hoped to allay growing fears about the timing. The company now expects to have a seven-inch Android tablet in the second half of 2011. Although not providing details on this smaller screen, company chief Sanjay Jha also confirmed plans for a Wi-Fi only Xoom in the nearer future as well as a matching version of the seven-inch slate.

XMG Studio attacks EA for Christmas app promotion at Mobile Games Forum
While we're in San Francisco at Macworld this week, there's also a Mobile Games Forum going on in London, and one of the discussions over there got a little heated when the talk turned to EA's big Christmas sale on the App Store.

Sanjay Jha says multiple Motorola tablet sizes coming, hints at Atrix on other carriers
Can't say this is any surprise, but Sanjay Jha just confirmed on Motorola's earnings call that he "sees good reason" to eventually release an entire family of tablets at "different multiple different display sizes and price points." Specifically, Jha mentioned 7-inch tablets, and later said that consumer demographics like kids, teenagers, and "women" want different things from a tablet than enterprise and professional customers -- which sounds suspiciously like Jha doesn't think women want a single device for work and home, but we'll give him him the benefit of the doubt, since he's not always the smoothest speaker.

Motorola admits Verizon iPhone triggered 'slowdown' in Droid
Motorola chief Sanjay Jha during the company's fiscal results call acknowledged that the Verizon iPhone was already damaging his company's smartphone performance. Shipments were not only down both in the wake of the January 11 Apple news but even in the weeks before it was made official. The CEO wouldn't quantify numbers but admitted that anticipation for the iPhone had led some to hold off on buying a Droid.

Netflix: Apple TV outpacing iPad, net neutrality at risk
Netflix while discussing breakthrough results on Wednesday surprised the industry with word that the new Apple TV was already more popular than the iPad for Netflix movie viewing. Apple's media hub had already accumulated more viewing hours in its first four months than the iPad managed in nine. The movie rental service didn't try to explain the gap, but it suggested many still preferred to use Netflix's movie streaming on a TV despite the surge in tablet video.

Ongo News app coming to iPad
Ongo is something new for news consumers. It just launched on the web this week and is coming to the iPad soon.
It's a collaboration between The New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today and others to provide a subscription news service for US$6.99 a month. The aim is to provide readers with the best of those papers and other media outlets that join up. They already have the Financial Times and newspapers from Boston, Charlotte, Louisville, Detroit, Des Moines, Indianapolis, Kansas City, and Miami on board, among and others. Some of the content providers provide complete access. Other content is curated. Some content is an additional $ 0.99 a month, but other publications can cost up to $14.99 which is just a tad pricey.

Netflix passes 20 million subscribers; focuses on ISP disputes, HBO, Facebook

Motorola Mobility reports robust growth in last quarter, but predicts difficult times ahead
Yes, we are deep in Q4 2010 financial reporting season, and Motorola's freshly independent Mobility arm is latest to step up and deliver its figures. Total revenue over the past three months reached $3.4 billion, marking a 21 percent increase year-on-year, net revenue from mobile devices was $2.4 billion, up by 33 percent year-on-year, and handset shipments were a seemingly healthy 4.9 million.
