Obama's State of the Union address goes Web 2.0
Tonight, President Obama will deliver the annual State of the Union address, and while partisan politics (and some great shots of various people nodding off) will rule the night, the US government is getting into the Web 2.0 game in a big way tonight. The speech -- scheduled for 9:00 pm ET -- will be streamed live on the web, and immediately following said speech, the White House will host an 'Open for Questions' event on Twitter making use of the hashtag #sotu, while other government officials will answer questions submitted on Facebook, as well as the White House website's webform. On Thursday night, the President will also answer questions on YouTube. We'll let you know

Verizon to patch VL600 4G modem, add Mac LTE in February
Verizon in an update on Tuesday afternoon said it would both update its LG VL600 4G modem and give Mac users LTE support. The LG hardware should get an update that improves its performance on the new network. Mac support would come in February, a spokesperson told PhoneScoop, though it wasn't said whether that was for existing devices.

The Daily to launch by mid-February for 99-cents per week
The Daily, News Corp's foray into the world of digital newspaper publishing, might debut in the next few weeks. Executive James Murdoch, head of News Corp's operations in Europe and Asia, verified this tentative launch date during the DLD media conference in Munich, Germany. He also confirmed the iPad-based digital paper will be available for 99-cents per week as previously rumored.

A new image editor, Imagerie 1.0, has been launched by app4mac. The editor is built for Snow Leopard, and features layers, vector tools, a gradient editor and a history navigator. Intel Panther Point slide shows USB 3.0 support
A leaked presentation (below) may have confirmed that Intel's Panther Point chipset will finally add native USB 3.0 support. The presentation refers to the platform supporting as many as four of the ports at full speed with ten more supplying USB 2.0. A dedicated controller, the XHCI, would handle just the 3.0 jacks and would give each of them the full 5Gbps of bandwidth, preventing one from slowing down the other.

Deutsche Bank leans toward iPhone over BlackBerry
International financial firm Deutsche Bank should be opting for the iPhone over its previous smartphone of choice, the BlackBerry, says an analyst with the company's Equity Research group, Chris Whitmore. The bank recently ran a two-month trial of the iPhone, which Whitmore describes as having been "overwhelmingly positive." To provide secure e-mail the trial depended on an app provided by Good Technology, rather that Apple's native Mail client.

Verizon ramps up trade-in, upgrade programs in advance of iPhone 4 launch
Not exactly a huge surprise here, but it looks like Verizon will be doing everything it can to pair folks with a new iPhone 4 when it launches on the carrier next month, even if they've just purchased a new phone on Verizon or another carrier. During an investor meeting this week, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo revealed that the carrier will be using its existing trade-in program (which launched in October) to lure would-be customers, with a Verizon rep further detailing that it will be "more actively" promoting the plan in the lead up to the iPhone 4 launch -- under that program, a 16GB iPhone 4 from AT&T will net you a $212 credit. Google launches cloud printing for iOS devices
Google announced that it is rolling out Cloud Print support for mobile document and mobile Gmail users. Announced in April 2010, Cloud Print lets you print from any device, OS or browser without having to install custom software or proprietary drivers. The idea is simple. You open a Google document on your iOS device, select print and the document is sent to your printer over the internet. The feature is compatible with devices running iOS 3.0 or higher.

MetroPCS takes a cue from Verizon, appeals FCC's net neutrality code

Microsoft intros 30-day trial of Office for Mac 2011
Microsoft has rolled out a new trial version of Office for Mac 2011. The release contains all of the apps in the Home and Business edition of the suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the first Mac version of Outlook. BlackBerry Messenger 6 may get GameCenter-style features
BlackBerry Messenger 6 may pick up traces of Apple's GameCenter if an Indonesian leak proves true. Supported in part by word of developer Gamemachi reportedly writing code, the claim has BBM6 relying on a person's username as a game nickname and giving them both status updates and interaction. An achievement system wasn't mentioned by KomBB in the possible scoop, but it would show recent play like the iOS 4 feature and expand the communication to let users chat mid-game even when not on each other's friend lists.

Paper batteries recharge from moisture in the air, seemingly defy laws of nature
Some like working with clay, some like carving from stone, others etch out of silicon, but the team at CENIMAT apparently really likes plain 'ol paper. The Razer Ferox is an ultraportable stereo speaker set made for gamers. They deliver 360 degrees of omni-directional sound and have expandable resonance chambers for better bass than normally possible in such small sizes. Mac OS X 10.6.7 Server beta updates in unison with client
Apple is already seeding a new beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 Server, notes AppleInsider. The delta is 468.3MB, and unlike today's matching client beta comes with one known issue. In some cases clients may fail to NetBoot from a NetRestore image created with the v10.6.6 version of Server, Apple informs.

Google adds a weather widget to iPhone and Android search
Google launched a new weather search feature for iOS and Android browsers. When you navigate to google.com and search for "weather", you will be presented with a widget-like interface that shows your current conditions and immediate forecast. A slider will let you view a detailed hour-by-hour forecast for the upcoming 12 hours.
The new feature is available only in English and uses your location information to pull down the forecast. For iPod touch users that lack a dedicated GPS, this forecast information could be hit or miss depending on the accuracy of the WiFi triangulation information. You can also set your location manually but that takes some of the fun out of it.

Samsung Galaxy S Hoppin hops to South Korea, includes TV dock for big-screen fun
South Korean carrier SK Telecom is billing its new Galaxy S Hoppin from Samsung as a "smartphone that can also serve as a set-top box," but in reality, it's basically an Android phone just like any other in Sammy's stable with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display -- the big difference is that it comes bundled with a dock that cables up to your home television and lets you watch streaming video off of the company's new Hoppin entertainment service either on the road or in the comfort of your La-Z-Boy. News: Deutsche Bank: ‘no going back’ to RIM after iPhone trial

Google Voice gets number porting on a permanent basis
After a brief tease a few days ago, Google today switched on number porting for Google Voice. The option lets those with a long-serving phone number turn it into a Google Voice number. Making the swap lets users change the number of their cellphone or any other phone without disrupting the number friends might prefer to call.

Kodak loses critical part of ITC case against Apple and RIM
The International Trade Commission has ruled against Kodak in its patent infringement complaint against Research in Motion and Apple, Bloomberg reports. In an initial determination recommendation, ITC Judge Paul Luckern ruled that Kodak's patents are invalid and not infringed by Apple's iPhone or RIM's BlackBerry handsets.
This ruling is subject to review by the full six-member ITC commission, which can decided to overrule the judge or let his decision stand. If the commission overturns this decision, they could block the import of camera-enabled handsets from Apple and RIM. This final determination will be made by

iOS 4.3-ready apps begin turning up in the App Store
Apple still isn't offering much of a hint about an iOS 4.3 release date -- other than a busier than usual beta schedule -- but it looks like we could now be one step closer to a general roll out. What appears to be the first app that takes advantage of some iOS 4.3-specific features has now garnered Apple's approval and turned up in the App Store, which would seem to suggest that there's no more major changes or bugs that need to be ironed out. Next-gen Apple Peel 520 case slimming down, adding data
A new, upcoming Apple Peel 520 case has been spotted in a YouTube video (below) originating from China. Like the original, the new one turns an iPod touch into a phone thanks to its SIM card slot, but this time around a GPRS data network connection is also present. Also as before, the iPod touch needs to be jailbroken and special apps from Yosion loaded onto it to enable either phone or data functionality.

Google Voice number porting officially launched
After a bit of a false start, Google's finally officially turned on Google Voice number porting for all existing users. $20 is all it takes to swap your main line over to the service, although you'll have to cancel your existing service contracts to make it all happen. The service is currently only for existing GV users, so you can't open a new account and port straight away, but Google says new accounts will get the option in the "next few weeks." So -- anyone out there going to take the plunge?

White iPhone problem solved with Japanese technique?
Apple has finally solved the manufacturing problem preventing the release of white iPhone 4s, a report says. Originally promised shortly after the availability of black models, Apple has had to delay the white phones several times. The trouble, a Macotakara source says, is that earlier painting techniques produced large numbers of defective units, making them impractical for mass production.

Paying with your iPhone at Starbucks hands on review
Last week, Starbucks updated its Starbucks Card app to take payments through your iPhone and iPod touch at most Starbucks locations throughout the country. It was originally part of a pilot program when the app debuted in 2009, then to Starbucks locations inside Target stores, and now nationwide.

Aber dafür hat sich ein Comedy-Team des Senders VRT neulich gründlich gerächt: Die Scherzbolde platzierten des Nächtens einen Stahlcontainer exakt so, dass die Blechkiste Parkplatzeinfahrt und Haupteingang der Mobistar-Zentrale blockierte. LG prepping Optimus 3D for February announcement?
Talk of 3D features in LG's upcoming G-Slate are becoming less and less implausible-sounding by the day, capped off this week with a couple of doozies: first off, Carphone Warehouse's Dutch outpost -- called simply The Phone House there -- briefly posted a teaser for an upcoming "Optimus 3D" Android smartphone, though the page has since been removed. Secondly, the world's tech media (us included) just received an invite to LG's shindig at Mobile World Congress next month where it teases a new Optimus model that takes us "into the new dimension." Android catches up to iPad, iPhone in developer interest
IDC in a new study discovered that Android tablets, not just phones, were catching up to iPads and iPhones in developer interest. Although interest in writing for the iPad was still up, climbing to 87 percent, Android tablet interest shot up from just 62 percent last September to 74 percent this month. Android phones also saw their demand go up to 87 percent, although the iPhone moved ahead again and kept the attention of 92 percent of developers.

Second Mac OS X 10.6.7 beta adds Mac App Store to testing
Apple has begun seeding a second beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 to developers. Identified as build 10J846, the delta version of the release is said to measure 372MB, slightly larger than the previous beta's 338.6MB. Testing areas have expanded to include the Mac App Store, alongside earlier focuses on AirPort, Bonjour, SMB and graphics drivers.

JVC versucht sich an einem Boombox-Update mit Field-Recording-Funktion

JVC bemüht sich mit den Modellen RD-R1 und RD-R2 ernsthaft um ein Ghettoblaster-Update: Dabei setzen die Japaner sympathischerweise nicht auf iDing-Docks sondern auf den Rückkanal - in den "Ohren" der Bumms-Kisten sind nämlich wirklich Mikros untergebracht. Damit kann man mit RD-R1 und RD-R2 nicht nur Lärm machen, sondern auch den eigenen Krach aufnehmen - auf MicroSD-Karte und vermeintlich in Field-Recorder-Qualität. HP files three more possible Palm tablet names: Touchslate, Touchcanvas, and Duopad
HP has been burning through US trademark filings over the past few months, presumably hoping to nail down as many possibilities for the new Palm webOS tablets as it can -- a "shoot first, ask questions later" type of situation. Synology intros iPad-optimized DiskStation NAS
Synology on Tuesday introduced its latest DiskStation NAS for homes and small offices, the small DS411slim. It has four 2.5-inch drive bays for a maximum capacity of up to 4TB and uses less than 17W when in use, or just 9.6W in hibernation. Apple begins approving third-party apps with AirPlay video
Despite the feature's association with iOS 4.3, Apple has already begun approving third-party apps with support for AirPlay video, reports say. While video has technically been a feature of AirPlay since iOS 4.2, only the forthcoming v4.3 firmware will unlock the option outside of iOS' native video player. The technology can push video to a second AirPlay-compatible device, which currently means the Apple TV unless using an app like AirView.

Verizon iPhone gets unlimited data, triggers Osborne effect
Verizon Wireless chief Lowell McAdam in a quick update confirmed leaks that the iPhone and other smartphones would be driven to the $30 unlimited smartphone plan. Keeping unlimited would make it easier for customers who signed up with AT&T after its 2GB cap imposition to jump to Verizon at the next opportunity, he said. The soon-to-be company CEO argued to the WSJ that it would be foolish to cap plans as the iPhone arrived and reduce the incentive to switch.

A report from Bloomberg suggests Apple will integrate Near Field Communication technology into the iPhone 5 for AT&T and the iPad 2. The technology would let you make purchases wirelessly by waving your iOS device over an NFC-enabled register. 9to5 Mac reports that the next version of Mac OS X 10.6.7 was seeded to developers on Monday. Build 10J846 comes just days after the first build was released. At the time, developers were encouraged to test AirPort, Bonjour, SMB file sharing and graphics drivers.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti guns after AMD's mid-range
NVIDIA today brought its second-generation Fermi hardware into the true mid-range while simultaneously resurrecting the Ti badge not used since the GeForce 3 and 4 days. The GeForce GTX 560 Ti directly replaces the GTX 460 and is about a third faster, owing both to 384 visual effects cores (up from 332) as well as a much higher 822MHz core and 1.64GHz shader clocks (up from 675MHz and 1.35GHz). Eight hardware tessellation engines also give it a steeper performance increase for DirectX 11 and OpenGL games that support the feature.

WSJ: Verizon confirms $30 unlimited data plan
Verizon will offer a $30 unlimited data plan, the Wall Street Journal confirmed this morning, similar to the original plan that AT&T offered when the iPhone was originally introduced. This comes after a couple weeks of speculation.
"I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot," said Lowell McAdam, the carrier's chief operating officer.
Engadget, however, is showing that Verizon is doing away with its tiered data plan option entirely.

TUAW's Daily App: Dungeon Raid
I am a sucker for both puzzle games and RPGs, so Dungeon Raid is right up my alley. It's a puzzle game where you have to match up various icons on a grid, as you can see above, but the real draw here is that all of those icons map to various RPG abilities that then let you level and grind out a sword-and-sorcery style character. Matching up swords and skulls, for example, lets you attack monsters, while matching coins piles up gold to spend on items later on. Leveling up grants various abilities and spells that affect combat, and as you play the puzzle game, you're also building up a character and casting spells at the same time.

Panasonic's rugged Lumix TS3 gets GPS, barometer, 3D photos
Panasonic added a third and more unique Lumix model as part of its camera introductions on Tuesday. The TS3 replaces the ruggedized TS2 and gets a number of features tailored to outdoor shooting. Along with GPS positioning to geotag shots, it has an altimeter, barometer and compass to help navigate and get information for the final image.

The iPad-only publication The Daily should launch "in the next few weeks," according to James Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch, and the chairman and CEO of News Corp. for Europe and Asia. The title has been in development for some time, and was originally expected to premiere on the 19th until a last-minute delay. Panasonic shows new Lumix ZS10, FX78 point and shoots
Panasonic on Tuesday announced a few upcoming additions to its Lumix lineup of point-and-shoot digital cameras. The Lumix ZS10 ultrazoom upgrades to a new 14.1-megapixel MOS sensor, a 24mm ultra wide angle lens with 16X optical zoom and 1080p recording. Google today was discovered to be buying the movie recommendation site fflick in what's likely an attempt to boost its upcoming YouTube movie service. The in progress deal, estimated by TechCrunch to be worth $10 million, would give it access to a Twitter-based sentiment engine that helps gauge whether viewers liked a movie or whether it has significant pre-release buzz. It's not clear if fflick would survive independently or would be subsumed entirely by Google.

Verizon adds just 955,000 subs in last pre-iPhone quarter
Verizon on Tuesday posted fall quarterly results that revealed slow growth in the last quarter before the CDMA iPhone 4 reached its network. The company added a total 955,000 cellphone customers, a rare drop from the summer. Android was still the driving factor, Verizon said; over 654,000 of its new customers, or 75 percent of its 872,000 new subscription users, were buying smartphones.

NTFS-3G für Mac aktualisiert
Der Zugriff auf NTFS-Festplatten vom Mac ist nur über Zusatzprogramme möglich. Ein solches ist auch NTFS-3G, das vor wenigen Tagen eine Aktualisierung erfuhr. iPad 2, iPhone 5 may both get NFC, iTunes may get points
Analyst Richard Doherty of the Envisioneering Group claimed unusual access to Apple today with comments that Apple would add NFC to all its mobile devices. Along with the anticipated iPhone 5, the next iPad would get the short-range wireless technology, hardware engineers for both devices reportedly said. Verizon profits nearly double, but miss Wall Street expectations
Verizon's quarterly report is in, and profits are nearly twice what they were this time last year: $4.65 billion compared to $2.37 billion a year ago. Additionally, VZW added 872,000 customers, a fair bit more than the 646,000 it was expected to gain. Great news, right? Not if you're a Wall Street analyst, who wanted to see earnings per share of 55 cents. The actual figure was 54 cents, and so down Verizon's shares go, a 1.3 percent drop so far. Notion Ink Adam: erste Unboxing-Videos

Endlich liegen die ersten Notion Ink Adams bei den Bestellern auf dem Tisch. Nach den vielen Verzögerungen, mir denen das indische Start-Up zu kämpfen hatte, fällt es fast ein wenig schwer daran zu glauben, und leider läuft auch jetzt nicht alles reibungslos. Ein erstes Software-Update führte laut Android Police dazu, dass das Adam nicht mehr hochstartete (Bild hinter dem zweiten Quelle-Link). Notion Ink hat das Update daraufhin wohl gestoppt und seinen Kunden Infomails geschickt. Wir warten noch auf ein eigenes Review-Gerät und begnügen uns deswegen vorerst mit zwei Unboxing-Videos nach dem Break.

Sprint toning down anti-iPhone talk in ad to court Apple?
Sprint may have deliberately softened an ad for the Evo Shift 4G to please Apple. The spot, which focuses on a series of quotes praising the phone, noticeably dropped a final quote that touted the Android device as superior to the iPhone 4. It's unclear when the change took effect, since the web version (below) is 'clean,' but the more confrontational ad stopped roughly at the same time as Verizon iPhone ads began.

Official App Store account on Twitter
Apple has an official Twitter account for the App Store, appropriately named @appstore which promises "official App Store tweets including our featured apps, exclusive offers, and more."
The first post from the account came only a few hours ago, but there are already 50,000 people signed up.
One of the questions that people have had with the Mac App Store was the question of "discoverability" of apps on the store which aren't "featured" or on the "top" lists, hopefully this account will be one more way for Apple to get out the word about new apps that you might not otherwise hear about. Adobe Photoshop Express updated for iOS
Adobe today updated its free iOS app for photo manipulation, Photoshop Express, to version 1.5 -- bringing support for Retina Display resolution, a faster and more streamlined workflow for photo capture and editing, and multitasking support under iOS 4.2, which it now requires. The universal app, which works with both iPad and the iPhone and iPod Touch devices, is a companion to the online Photoshop.com service, which allows photo editing, hosting and sharing (up to 2GB of photos or videos).

Nioncom announces Android-based, pico projector-equipped MemoryKick Vision
MicroVision may not have any plans to turn the pico projector-equipped "mini-tablet" prototype it showed off at CES earlier this month into an actual product, but it looks like little-known Nioncom is now taking the idea and running with it. RIM: PlayBook battery life will be 'equal or greater than the iPad with smaller battery size'
Hey, can everyone please stop talking about the iPad? Barnes & Noble may axe Nook 3G due to lack of demand
Barnes & Noble may be ramping down the 3G version of the Nook due to poor demand. A rumor Monday night pointed to signs that the Android e-reader had been end-of-lifed and was left only to remaining stock. Google creates real-time weather web app for iPhone, Android
Google today gave both Android and iPhone users a second bonus today with a real-time, web-based weather app. A search for "weather" in the mobile browser will show the current weather, including based on the user's position. Phone owners get the forecast and can drag a live slider to see how the forecast is expected to change over the course of the next 12 hours.
