AT&T trying to cling on to iPhone customers by offering them unlimited data (again)
Were you riding one of AT&T's unlimited data deals until recently? If so, this whole new Verizon iPhone thing is about to work in your favor, as the Associated Press is reporting AT&T iPhone users are being offered a sort of unlimited data amnesty: if they had it before, but switched to a limited data plan since, they can now have it back. This is clearly in response to Verizon's promised $30 uncapped deal, though it remains entirely unofficial and unannounced -- no reason why AT&T would want to advertise its desperation, after all. Motorola Atrix 4G and Xoom tablet launching at the end of February, Droid Bionic and LTE Xoom in Q2
Motorola had one of the best CES showings of any company in recent memory, and now we've got some rough ship dates for all that new gear: CEO Sanjay Jha just announced on the company's earnings call that the Atrix 4G and Xoom will arrive at "the end of February," while the LTE-enabled Droid Bionic and Xoom will arrive at "the end of the second quarter."

Sony trots out MDR-XB1000, MDR-XB41EX and MDR-XB21EX headphones
So, here's a refreshing change of pace. Rather than a new set of cans coming with a superstar's name on them, Sony's just fine with its four-lettered label. And given the success of the Walkman, we'd say it's still elite enough for now. New Apple ad says iPad is "iconic"
Apple has released the latest in its "iPad is" series of commercials. The new ad, available on Apple's YouTube channel, touts the iPad as "iconic," following the amazing, electric, delicious and musical commercials.
The ad showcases a host of apps and features available on the iPad, including the djay for iPad app, which our own Brett Terpstra reviewed last month. The ad also features an American Airlines ticket being scanned directly from the iPad (American Airlines HD app) as well as over 60,000 apps being available for the iPad on the iOS App Store.

AT&T offering unlimited data to customers leaving for Verizon
An Associated Press report suggests AT&T is using an unadvertised loophole to entice long-time iPhone customers to stay with the wireless carrier. In this promotion, an AT&T iPhone owner that once had an unlimited plan in the past is eligible to switch back to this plan after a quick call to customer service. Unlimited data is no longer offered to new customers and was removed as an option when the iPhone 4 debuted last June.

Pagani Huayra supercar has a steampunk interior that would impress even Dio Eraclea (video)
After a number of leaks and teases Pagani has unleashed its Zonda successor to the world, and it's the Huayra, a name that we're still having trouble spelling reliably but know that it's pronounced "hoo-aii-ra." Compared to the company's current offering this new model has a relatively understated design, designed to "shape the wind" rather than tear it a new one like the Zonda does. That said, the Huayra still shares key elements that make it unmistakably Pagani -- headlights, gull-wing doors, and a decided pear shape that could make J.Lo blush. NameFind 5.0 goes multithreaded, Snow Leopard-only
Code by Kevin has released NameFind 5.0, an update to its file finder for the Mac. Searches are run using an alternative to the algorithm in Mac OS' Spotlight. Version 5.0 drops dependence on Unix tools in favor of Cocoa APIs, and is rewritten to support multithreading, providing speed boosts over the previous release. It has also gained drag-and-drop commands, complete AppleScript support, and use of the native Apple Help format.

China Mobile says Apple to support TD-LTE
In an interview with Chinese news portal Sina, China Mobile's Chairman Wang Jianzhou was quoted (Chinese) as saying that Apple would get behind the carrier's next-gen TD-LTE network technology:
"Apple has its own problems to deal with and has many things to develop, and currently TD development is not on it's timetable," he said. "Apple has been clear that it will support TD-LTE These two years we have been discussing the issue. The situation is currently moving forward step by step."
If Apple has indeed thrown it's support behind TD-LTE, it would be a significant boost for China Mobile, as it could prompt other handset makers to follow Apple's lead.

Nissan ramping up Leaf production, trying to meet demand
After doing its best to lower expectations among those with Leaf pre-orders, Nissan is now doing all it can to ramp up production of the things. Just 3,000 cars total have been produced since October at the company's factory outside of Tokyo, but by the end of March Nissan pledges to be pumping out that many each and every month. Microsoft ships 2m WP7 phones in fall, won't talk real sales
Microsoft in an interview updated its holiday sales states to say it had shipped two million Windows Phone 7 devices to carriers in the fall. The tally is half a million more than the 1.5 million in the first six weeks and suggests a spike in the last month. The company still declined, however, to tell AllThingsD how many had actually reached customer hands.

Apple has begun airing another new TV spot for the iPad, dubbed "iPad is Iconic." Macworld Industry Forum: Bill Atkinson on Interface Design

Bill Atkinson, the developer of HyperCard, and MacPaint among others spoke about interface design this morning at the Macworld Industry Conference.

Macworld Industry Forum: Jason Snell on how Apple does it
News from Macworld Expo, all week at TUAW.
At the Macworld 2011 industry forum this morning, Jason Snell, the editorial director of Macworld magazine, talked about "how Apple does it." His first point was that Apple is not just Steve Jobs. Android 3.0 SDK live with DRM, Apple's HTTP Live Streaming
Google gave developers their first direct sample of Honeycomb by posting the Android 3.0 preview SDK with hints it was tackling major Android issues. The tablet-optimized OS now has an extendable DRM framework that addresses complaints of fragmented Android DRM. Apple is hiring for at least three positions which may be connected to NFC payment technology for the iPhone and/or iPad, says AppleInsider. Man kann mit der Entwicklung ja nicht früh genug anfangen. Stichwort Honeycomb. Google hat gerade eine Preview des SDK für die kommende Android-Version veröffentlicht und auch wenn es noch eine Weile dauern wird, bis das Gros der Entwickler mit z.B. einem Xoom richtig anfangen kann: früh übt sich. Die Preview beinhaltet "nicht fertige" APIs, die Icons stimmen auch noch nicht ganz. Aber besser als nichts. Ran!

AT&T letting some iPhone users go back to unlimited
AT&T may be allowing some customers go back to unlimited data and reduce the incentive to switch to the Verizon iPhone. A report on Wednesday found that customers who at one point had an unlimited plan but opted for cheaper capped service had the permission to switch back. The AP cited at least once instance of a Brentwood, New York man and a friend both regaining unlimited plans for their iPhones after they called customer help.

Editorial: bugs on unreleased phones don't matter
There's a story going around today about an alleged problem in the power management unit affecting Motorola's first two dual-core smartphones -- AT&T's Atrix 4G and Verizon's Droid Bionic -- that leads to a hodgepodge of issues: overheating, weird RF fluctuation, the list goes on. Sounds like a tragedy in the making, doesn't it? Worst yet, the PMU problem is said to be a "major unfixable flaw that will plaque [sic] it forever." Bummer!

It's still going to be a little bit before you can get your hands on a Xoom, but if you'd like to start playing with the Honeycomb SDK right now -- and hey, developers, we'd encourage you to do just that -- Google's now made it possible. BGR: BlackBerry PlayBook to possibly use Android's Dalvik virtual machine, might run Android apps
RIM's been hyping AIR apps and web apps for the PlayBook for a while now, but there's a chance much bigger things are in the works: BGR says the company wants to add in Java compatibility for legacy BlackBerry apps, and that among other options it's considering using the Dalvik virtual machine found in Android to get there. That makes a lot of sense -- Dalvik is one of the most advanced Java(ish) virtual machines out there, and it's open-source, so RIM could conceivably take it and tweak it to work with existing BlackBerry apps, which are built in Java. Clever, clever.
But that's not all: BGR goes on to speculate that using Dalvik will also allow the PlayBook and future QNX

LTE-Advanced demo can pull 700MB video in 9.3 seconds
The South Korean government's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has demoed one of the first public instances of LTE-Advanced. A test mobile media broadcast system peaked at 600Mbps, or six times faster than regular LTE, and was capable of speeds that could easily outperform most landlines. The agency downloaded a CD-sized 700MB movie in 9.3 seconds and could stream 3D TV even while roaming in a test vehicle.

Verizon feature phone users could boost iPhone activations by 19 million
Analyst William Power of R.W. Baird & Co. is making a bold prediction on Verizon iPhone sales. While other analysts and Verizon itself is predicting a conservative 11 million units sold in the upcoming year, Power is projecting a whopping 19 million in sales for the Apple-branded smartphone from feature phone users alone. This prediction is based on a survey of 1,000 people that was conducted to gauge the interest in the Verizon iPhone.
Of feature phone users at Verizon, 11% said they would definitely buy the Verizon iPhone, while 18% said they would probably buy the Apple smartphone. Combined, this 30% could potentially contribute 19 million new iPhone activations for the wireless carrier.

Rumor has BlackBerry, PlayBook running Android apps
An unusual but reportedly multi-sourced rumor has suggested that RIM might graft Android app compatibility on to its BlackBerry phones and the BlackBerry PlayBook. While officially planning to put a Java virtual machine on the PlayBook, it's believed by BGR to be "very much considering" Google's Dalvik engine from Android 2.2 and later as the basis. The trick could let it run at least some Android apps run and lure customers away who would otherwise have used a pure Android tablet.

Microsoft: 'over 2 million' Windows Phone 7 licenses sold to manufacturers so far
Microsoft just dropped a few tidbits of knowledge on us regarding Windows Phone 7's performance in the marketplace so far. Here's what we've got:
'Early research' says 93 percent of WP7 customers are 'satisfied' and 90 percent would recommend the platform to others. We don't know details about the research, though -- number of customers polled, time frame, so on.
Average of 100 new apps in the Marketplace per day, and over 6,500 total are available right now.
Most importantly, "over 2 million" licenses have been sold to OEMs around the world.

A new one-man stage show is drawing attention to ugly practices at Apple's major manufacturing partner, Foxconn, Fortune notes. Canalys report: iPad sales drive Apple PC growth 241% in Q4 2010
The iPad is an in-betweener device - it's too big to be a smartphone and it's not quite a PC. It can be a conundrum for analysts looking to pick apart Apple's quarterly and yearly earnings as there is no established category for the device. Some analysts have chosen to separate the iPad into its own category ("media tablets"), others prefer to take a different approach and group the iPad with PC sales.

Future iPhone to support TD-LTE on China Mobile
Apple has "made it clear" that a future iPhone will support the TD-LTE 4G standard, according to the chairman of carrier China Mobile, Wang Jianzhou. Reuters reports that the topic came up in relation to the prospect of a TD-SCDMA iPhone, for which China Mobile has been negotiating for approximately two years. TD-SCDMA is a Chinese-only cellular standard which would require special hardware support from Apple, likely in the form of a separate model.

Verizon 4G dongles to gain Mac compatibility in February
If you've got an LG VL600 Verizon 4G LTE dongle, and you've been climbing up the walls waiting to use it with your Mac, you're going to have to wait just a little bit longer. At present, there are no drivers available to support the 4G dongles on Mac computers, but we understand that Verizon engineers have been hard at work rectifying this. And, it seems, the fruits of their labor will be revealed shortly.
According to PhoneScoop, LG VL600 4G LTE dongles will become Mac compatible at some point in February.
So, there you have it! Soon your Mac will be able to cruise the 'net at (Verizon) LTE speed.

UrRobot's Robii hides a multitouch projector in his circus tent (video)
This cute, bearmonkey-like creature with animatronic head and arms perched atop a rotating, but otherwise fixed torso is called Robii. He's built by Compal Communications, the ODM more often associated with handsets, and will be sold under the new UrRobot brand in Taiwan. O2 to launch free, UK-wide Wi-Fi network
UK wireless provider O2 on Wednesday said it will launch a nationwide Wi-Fi network. The premium hotspots will be managed with the help of venue owners and be open for all customers to use for free, no matter what network they subscribe to. By 2013, 13,000 hotspots will be in place, O2 promises, but the rollout will begin this March at 450 O2 shops and offices.

In addition to gaining an overhauled look, the Apple website is now hosting order pages for the Verizon iPhone. People can choose between 16GB and 32GB models, and configure a new or existing Verizon account. Ubiquisys trots out personal femtocell with iPhone in mind
Ubiquisys on Wednesday put out a unique femtocell targeted chiefly at travelers and primarily iPhone users. The attocell draws on the Internet connection from a computer over USB and broadcasts a 3G connection just powerful enough for phone calls and data while staying in a country's local wireless limits. Some countries allow power for a whole room, but the attocell can still broadcast a signal 5mm out in tightly regulated areas, or enough to use a phone with a headset or the speakerphone.

Apple.com showing changes
Our eagle-eyed readers are spotting subtle changes to Apple.com starting with a grey navigational bar across the top of the page -- that weren't rendering properly with the iPad properly at first. There are also bits of animation to other parts of the site, including the Mac page. The core part of the site appears to be the same.
When viewing the page on the iPad, the names on the buttons are missing. The animation on the subsites also did not work correctly. The animation loads when you open the Mac page, but did not work when you click on "Accessories" or other parts of the bar. Clicking on the icons within the animation itself, such as the Mac Mini, MacBook icons, did not work either.

Looks like Sony is preparing to freshen up the top end of its laptop range with a pair of new VAIO series, the SA and SB. An Intel Core i7-2620M is found populating a listing for an SA1X9E/XI model, alongside 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 128GB of SSD storage, AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics, and a 1600 x 900 resolution squeezed into a 13.3-inch screen. Kongregate app incident raises Google openness concerns
Google ended a dispute over an Android app on Tuesday that raised broader questions about the policies behind the Android Market. It re-allowed Kongregate Arcade after briefly pulling it for violating rules banning apps with their own app stores. The title had originally downloaded Flash apps to cache them locally, to the device's SD card; it now uses a standard WebKit engine and uses a cache to save the games.

Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney confirmed that the personal hotspot add-on for the iPhone will cost $20 per month and will provide 2 GB of data. The personal hotspot feature will let you share your cellular data connection with up to five devices via WiFi. This 2 GB of data is separate from the $30 unlimited data plan and is allocated only for mobile hotspot usage. You should watch your usage closely as overages will be charged at a costly $20 per GB.

It's not often we mark the anniversary of a single word around here, but this one's particularly close to our cold, electronic hearts -- it was ninety years ago today that the word "robot" was introduced to the public in Karel Capek's play "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots), which first premiered in Prague in its original Czech language in 1921, and came to New York a year later in English. Poll: iPhone owners love device, will buy the next one
NPolls, a polling company that uses mobile device apps and social networking to recruit users (who are paid a small gratuity for each poll taken) asked for opinions on the iPhone (all three current models) and found that 93 percent of the 2,536 respondents were "completely satisfied" with their device, with 22 percent rating the device "perfect" -- completely without any flaws at all. You may not have heard about it lately, but the classic game Oregon Trail is turning 40 years old this year. Initially developed as an educational game for a history class in Minneapolis, Oregon Trail was released to the public in 1981 for the Apple II computer. Apple approving third-party AirPlay apps
Appadvice.com has noted that Apple has approved a 3rd-party app which supports AirPlay. The app is called StreamToMe and requires iOS 4.3, which has not yet been released to the public although beta versions have been released to developers.
This suggests that iOS 4.3 may be getting close to release to the general public, but more importantly it signals that Apple is opening the door for other applications to use AirPlay.

Verizon iPhone gains hotspot pricing, 2GB data plan
Verizon has now announced the pricing and specifications of 3G data "tethering" for the iPhone, and it exactly matches the existing plans for smartphone owners. The $20 per month option gives the built-in iOS feature -- which converts 3G data into a portable Wi-Fi network, allowing up to five devices to share a connection -- its own separate pool of 2GB worth of data, Macworld reports. This fee is in addition to the iPhone's required voice and data plans, but does not "borrow" data from the iPhone plan.

Verizon's 4G LTE dongles get Mac support in February
Verizon's LG VL600 LTE modem received a software update today, but there's no need to wake your MacBook from its peaceful slumber -- there still aren't any drivers for Apple computers, over a month after we were promised a relatively imminent update.
