Intel touts record fall quarter, but iPad effect evident
Intel today posted record results for the fall that nonetheless illustrated a pronounced effect from the iPad and other tablets. Its net profit was up 48 percent year-to-year and 10 percent sequentially, to $3.4 billion, but was owed almost exclusively to its large-scale server group and investments. Its revenues for both Atom chips and its regular processors were both flat compared to the summer.

Millienial Media report says Apple still top manufacturer and growing, travel apps busy last quarter
Millenial Media has released its final report of 2010 about advertising requests on its network, and Apple remains the king of mobile advertising on the network. For the last 15 months, Apple has been the top manufacturer, and ad requests on the network for Apple devices are still growing -- 12% from third to fourth quarter in 2010, and 14% over the entire year. iPad requests of ads specifically have jumped 280% in the last quarter.
That doesn't mean Android is out of the running, however. Android beat out iOS in terms of impression shares, with a 46% network share as compared to iOS' 32% share. Android also took 55% of the revenue on the network, as opposed to 39% for Apple's devices. Verizon saw its share of impressions go up 2% in December, and it'll be interesting

We've been waiting to see the Paddle Pro in action since Evigroup announced the hands-free tablet last year, but we never imagined our introduction would be this, well titilating. Study: Verizon Wireless and HTC most eager to provide Android 2.2 updates
Look, if you buy a carrier-branded Android handset, you should know good and well that you may never see the first Android update. It ain't easy to hear, but as mama always said, the truth ain't always painless. That said, there's still some research you should do before picking a phone and carrier, and ComputerWorld has seemingly done just that for you. AmpliTube Fender app coming for iPhone, iPad
IK Multimedia has announced AmpliTube Fender for the iPhone and iPad. The new apps each simulate five Fender amps, including the '65 Deluxe Reverb, the SuperSonic, the '65 Twin Reverb, the '59 Bassman and the Pro Junior. Lima Sky responds to trademark battle around the word 'Doodle'
This one's complicated but interesting. A few days back, it was revealed by the developer of an app called Doodle Monster that Doodle Jump creators Lima Sky (we've talked to founder Igor Pusenjak before) was trying to enforce trademark rights against any app on the store using the word "Doodle" in its name. PBS releases app for iPhone with full-length episodes and schedule info
PBS released an iPad app last October with access to videos and information about the donation-supported network's programming. Now, the network has done the same for the iPhone and iPod touch, with a free app simply called PBS. Just like the iPad app, you can watch clips and full-length episodes of some of the network's most popular programs, as well as see schedules for both national and local PBS programming. The iPhone app also lets you set reminders for certain programs, and you can also share videos with friends on Facebook and Twitter, or through email.

YouTube streams are down on Boxee, but not blocked
Last night Boxee users apparently noticed they were unable to stream YouTube videos via their app or Boxes as noted above by TheNewTVRepublic, leading to some speculation that we were seeing a repeat of licensing related blocking that once shut down access on Popcorn Hour hardware. Fortunately that's not the case, as the official YouTube account just tweeted out a notice that it's only a glitch which it is working to address "quickly." iOS 4.3 shows new texting options, new look to app updates
Two more minor changes have been uncovered in the iOS 4.3 beta. AppleInsider notes that under the "Message" section of the Settings app, users can now change how often an alert tone is played for texts. Alerts can be set to occur once, twice, three times, five times or even 10 times. This compares to iOS 4.2.1, in which people can only set "Repeat Alert" to trigger two extra alerts for new messages.

Sony on Thursday introduced its CLM-V55 5-inch video monitor that attaches to compatible DSLR cameras and HD camcorders. Seen at CES: More iPhone cases and iPad keyboards than you'll ever need
If there was one thing in abundance at CES (other than hype), it was a plethora of iPhone cases and iPad keyboards. Perhaps it's a bit unfair to poke fun at the cases -- this is largely a show for retailers to purchase inventory, and having a ton of cases makes sense. You see them everywhere, from kiosks at the mall to the Apple Store, so the wide variety isn't a surprise.
When Apple debuted the iPad, they also offered their own keyboard and allowed Bluetooth keyboards to connect. Fast-forward nearly a year later and at CES there was no shortage of manufacturers from around the world offering up a plethora of keyboards. One had a trackpad, but no, it doesn't work on iPad. One used rubbery membrane keys with a soft but kinda not-so-great-for-typing feel.

NVIDIA starts offering settlements in notebook GPU case
The list of potentially affected notebooks has now gone up in the class-action lawsuit NVIDIA is facing. Owners of 15- and 17-inch notebooks from Apple, HP and Dell with NVIDIA graphics hardware that malfunctioned. The potentially affected Apple models are those MacBook Pro models made between May of 2007 and September of 2008. Dell and HP notebooks made between 2005 and 2010 may also be affected.

Find My Friends MobileMe feature found in iOS 4.3 beta release
Yesterday, Apple rolled out iOS 4.3 beta to developers and the first look at the latest iOS version yielded up some gems including multi-touch gestures, hotspot functionality, a return of the orientation lock and new camera effects. Earlier today, MacRumors uncovered settings for a feature called "Find My Friends" in this recent beta. This string was associated with MobileMe and may be a social feature similar to Google Latitude or Facebook Places, two services that let you locate and communicate with nearby contacts.

Virgin Mobile abandons unlimited data in favor of throttled 5GB plan
Well, it was fun while it lasted, but it looks like Virgin Mobile customers in the US will soon have to make do without their truly unlimited $40 data plan. Starting on February 15th, that will be replaced with a new plan that gives you 5GB of unhindered data use, and throttled bandwidth for anything used beyond that limit. For its part, Virgin says that most customers who use the BB2Go plan for "internet surfing and reasonable downloading will likely not be impacted/notice any difference," but we're sure there's plenty of folks out there that will beg to differ. Code leak provides early glimpse at The Daily for iPad
Some early content information has leaked on The Daily, the iPad-centric News Corp. publication expected to be announced on January 19th. The website associated with the app -- thedaily.com -- is said to contain a number of secrets hidden in its source code, most notably a graphic depicting two photo-heavy pages from the app featuring Oprah Winfrey and Brett Favre, respectively. These may simply be mockups, as the Daily team has allegedly been creating sample issues for several weeks.

JVC's 4K camcorder inches closer to reality, getting smaller all the time

BlackBerry Torch 2 to catch up to rivals in speed, display
The third leak today of a future BlackBerry model suggests RIM may plan a much more aggressive release for its flagship. The Torch 2 would roughly double the speed of the original Torch's two years old 600MHz chip with a 1.2GHz processor. BGR noted it would also be the first BlackBerry phone ever with hardware graphics acceleration, giving it tentative support for 3D games that have been off-limits in the past.

IBM's Watson supercomputer destroys all humans in Jeopardy practice round
So, in February IBM's Watson will be in an official Jeopardy tournament-style competition with titans of trivia Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. That competition will be taped starting tomorrow, but hopefully we'll get to know if a computer really can take down the greatest Jeopardy players of all time in "real time" as the show airs. Caught on camera: Two thieves grab iPads and run
Everybody loves iPads, even thieves.
At about 2:46 PM CT yesterday afternoon, security cameras and employees at Chicago-based MacSpecialist watched as two warmly-dressed thieves first "tried out" iPads at a stand-up kiosk, then ran out the door with them.
According to MacSpecialist COO (and occasional TUAW TV Live guest) Tim Robertson, nobody was hurt during the robbery attempt or while chasing the crooks. Tim nearly collides with the door at about 6 seconds into the video (he's wearing the tan coat), but avoided injury.
No suspects have been apprehended in the theft. TUAW recommends that MacSpecialist look into

RIM maintains PlayBook battery will last 'all day'
RIM during a business presentation in Boston on Thursday took steps to reassure those gathered about the battery life of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Study: 15% of AT&T subs likely to switch to Verizon iPhone
AT&T could see a large portion of its smartphone subscriber base jump ship for the Verizon iPhone next month, a study found on Thursday. Of those asked by ChangeWave, 15 percent of AT&T subscribers said in December they were likely to change carriers in the next three months. Now that we have the Verizon iPhone out of the way, the iPad 2 rumors are starting to pile up quickly.
In what seems to be more of an educated guess than an actual report from a "reliable source," German-language Apple site MacNotes.de says that the next-generation iPad is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on either April 2 or April 9, 2011. Gartner predicts Apple growth, but spurns iPad
Gartner has added its take on Apple's Q4 earnings to a growing list of other predictions.
Gartner predicts that Mac sales grew by nearly 24 percent, helping Apple to take a 9.7 percent share in Q4. However, it claims that any reason for a lagging growth for PC makers was simply to be blamed on the iPad, which it did not count as part of PC sales and lumped it in among "media tablets."

Wir hatten schon vor einer ganzen Weile mal von dem BlackBerry Dakota gehört, jetzt aber hat BGR ein Photo aufgetrieben, und wissen auch, dass der 2,8-Zoll VGA Bildschirm ein kapazitiver Touchscreen ist, der neue mit Quadband GPRS und Triband UMTS kommt, obendrein eine 5 Megapixel hat, mit der HD-Videoaufnahmen drin sind, 4GB Speicher, 768MB RAM und WiFi mit Hotspot-Möglichkeit. Shazam, Spotify team to play discovered tracks
Shazam, the app that identifies songs by simply listening to them, and streaming and download music service Spotify, have announced a partnership that will let users quickly access any song they have heard and tagged in Shazam. Called Play in Spotify, the feature will launch Spotify from Shazam and not only return the tagged song but also other tracks from the artist. Samsung delaying Android 2.2 for Vibrant to force upsell?
Samsung today was accused in an already controversial claim of deliberately withholding an Android upgrade on T-Mobile's Vibrant to promote its upcoming Vibrant 4G. A reported internal T-Mobile source said Samsung was barring T-Mobile from pushing the Android 2.2 update to the Vibrant since it would "decrease the value" of the upgraded phone, which ships with 2.2 stock. Samsung refreshes netbooks with dual-core NC210, among others
Samsung has outed three new netbooks, all refreshes to previous models. On offer is the 10.1-inch NC210, which boasts a dual-core, Intel Atom N550 CPU with up to 3GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a 250GB hard drive, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, LAN, and Bluetooth 3.0. It may still be years away from any sort of practical use, but a team of researchers at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have developed some so-called "liquid pistons" that they say could shake up everything from cameras to medical devices. As soon as I heard of the new iPad multi-touch gestures in the iOS 4.3 beta, which allow you to reach the home screen with a four- or five-finger gesture, I thought, "Well, that's it for the home button." Millenial: Android now larger than iPhone in ad share
Android devices have finally overtaken iPhones in mobile ad share, Millennial Media found in its results for December. After a virtual draw the month before, Android has moved up to 46 percent of ad traffic and pushed the iPhone down to 32 percent. Google's platform grew rapidly for all of last year and jumped from virtually no presence at the start of 2010 by a large 3,130 percent to reach where it is today.

Further discoveries in the iOS 4.3 beta have revealed that Apple's fifth-generation iPhone and second-generation iPad will come in native editions for Verizon along with camera functions. Try as it might to act hip and young, Volvo is still a company that's associated with the name "safety," and that's really not a bad thing. The hyper-ambitious folks at DARPA are totally over the current state of military data collection, and they're pretty sure they know how to fix it: teach sensors how to think. Well, they've got an idea how to fix it, but they've put out a call for mathematician to do the dirty work. The Mathematics of Sensing, Exploitation, and Execution (MSEE) program seeks a unified mathematical language that cane teach sensors not only to collect data, but to interpret, and act on it too. Mozilla Firefox 4 to be released in February
Mozilla senior director of platform engineering, Damon Sicore has announced that Firefox 4 is in the final stages of development. According to Sicoreís post on Mozillaís developer mailing list, there remains around a 160 significant bugs left in the software, or what are referred to as ìhard blockersî. A release candidate will be made available for testing once the bug count is down to around 100 known bugs. With the bug count still higher than that, another beta release will be in the offing with the aim to drive the bug count down to zero.

VW Golf Blue-e-motion and Hybrid Touareg strike a pose in Detroit
Alternative means of propulsion are the norm at the North American International Auto Show this year in Detroit, and VW had a few options on display. First up is the Touareg Hybrid, the company's first, with a 3.0 liter supercharged V6 paired to an electric motor, offering a combined 380hp, 0 - 60 times of 6.2 seconds (not bad for a 5,000lb SUV), and up to 27mpg -- if you don't dip too deep in the throttle. Bridgestone shows off QR-LPD display, the future looks dim
We didn't manage to check out Vivitek's booth and its bevy of low power QR-LPD-screened devices at this year's CES, but it doesn't look like we missed much. The e-book fanatics over at The Digital Reader dropped by, and found Bridgestone's QR-LPD screen technology extremely disappointing. Apparently the screens are just as dim and washed out as they were when we first glimpsed them, over two years ago. In addition, the screen refresh time is painfully slow. Verizon iPhone 4: Cases will be there for debut
Two different iPhone accessory makers have already announced cases compatible with the slightly-different design of the Verizon iPhone 4. As reported earlier, the Verizon iPhone has small modifications to the antenna and in particular the placement of the buttons that renders most iPhone 4 cases unsuitable. Case-Mate plans to have an entire new lineup available for purchase later this month, while audio accessory designer Scosche is promising to be ready with their case on or before the February 10th launch date with Verizon.

iPad and iPhone may drop home button, get more iLife apps
Apple's introduction of four- and five-finger gestures in iOS 4.3 may have presaged a decision to scrap the home button from the next-generation iPad and iPhone. A rumor Wednesday night claimed staff were already testing versions of both where, once awake, the device would need to use the four or five finger pinch and swipe motions exclusively for the home screen and task switcher. Leak: CDMA iPhone coming to China, Japan, Korea
The CDMA iPhone should reach beyond the Verizon model in the States to land at some of the most important Asian carriers, part suppliers may have revealed. In a move likened to converting the US from English to Esperanto, Google has announced that its web browser, Chrome, will be removing support for direct HTML5 playback of H.264 video in the coming months, in favor of Google's WebM media container (which leverages the VP8 video codec). This is a blow to the adoption of Apple's preferred video standard, as well as an hint that the web may see some continued churn within the video format arena.

Vulkano Blast and Flow due this month, streaming your media all over the place
You know what was missing form Vulkano's last release? More pun-ful names, that's what. Enter the Vulkano Blast and Flow do-it-all media boxes. For $99, the latter boasts watching live TV, browsing episode guides, and accessing recorded content via PC, Macs, smartphones, and various tablets -- iOS, BlackBerry, and Android for now, according to the press release, with Windows (Phone?) 7 and Symbian on the horizon. Meanwhile, the Blast adds HDMI out, UPnP support, and a 160GB hard drive for $199. Both have a 802.11n router and both are due out this month, if ya dig.

Twisted Pixel chooses not to sue Capcom over iOS ripoff
Capcom Mobile recently released a new game for the iOS App Store called MaXplosion, and soon after, a few fans noticed the game bears a striking similarity to a game by Twisted Pixel for Xbox Live Arcade called Splosion Man. Aside from the names themselves, MaXplosion also allows the player to jump three times by exploding each time, has the similar-looking character also running around a lab space, and even has a similar soundtrack.

CloudPull backs up Google Docs to Mac
Golden Hill Software has released CloudPull, a backup application for Google Docs that saves documents, spreadsheets and presentations locally to the Mac as Microsoft Office files. Chinese Apple Stores plan special New Year events
While India's Krishna Kalyan ate an iPhone 4 cake to celebrate the New Year, Apple's four retail stores in China have something else in mind to celebrate the Chinese New Year. According to ifoAppleStore, Apple has emailed an invitation to their customers in China to visit the retail stores between January 26th and February 13th for select events such as workshops, One to One training, and shopping specials on Apple and third-party products.

Gartner: Apple market share surges as overall PC sales slide
Apple's market share among computer makers in the US has continued to surge, despite an overall decline in PC sales, according to data collected by research firm Gartner. Mac shipments climbed by 23.7 percent to reach 1.86 million units, bringing Apple's market share up to 9.7 percent in the US.

T-Mobile TV spot: iPhone slowed down by Verizon's 3G
T-Mobile has quickly seized on the Verizon iPhone debut to roll out a TV ad touting its own network over others. The ad follows a similar pattern to earlier spots and sees the personified iPhone 4 paired up with not just AT&T (blue) but now Verizon (red). "App" chosen as word of the year by American Dialect Society
Defeating the words "junk" and "WikiLeaks," the word "app" was picked as the 2010 word of the year by the American Dialect Society. Short for "application," "app" received 69 votes from the linguists in the society. Speaking to MSNBC, the Dialect Society's executive secretary said "I think this past year there wasn't anything clearly dominant. But there's no question 'app' is a very powerful word."
Other words listed by the group this year could also pertain to Apple users -- "fat-finger" meaning to mistype and "-pad" used to combine the form of any tablet computer. Last year's winner was the word "tweet," but with "app" winning this year could it have an effect on Microsoft's

Samsung GT-i9023 hits FCC: a new version of the Nexus S with Android 2.4?
FCC filings have a curious tendency to launch us into far-reaching bouts of speculation, but hear us out -- we think we're onto something here. A Samsung phone with model number GT-i9023 just passed the FCC with AWS 3G -- T-Mobile's band. Leicht verzögertes Einsehen bei Apple: iPad-Nutzer können ab iOS 4.3 Beta 1 über die Funktion des seitlichen Hardwareschalters endlich selbst entscheiden. IDC: Apple's iPad killed Acer's sales in fall
Apple's iPad cut dramatically into Acer's sales this fall, IDC estimates showed today. In the US, Acer's computer numbers plunged 28.5 percent compared to a year ago, dropping it from 11.8 percent share at the end of 2009 to virtually tie Apple's share at 8.8 percent. Apple itself was the fastest mover and jumped from 7.2 percent a year ago to reach 8.7 percent.

WebM VP8 specs ready for chip companies to start building hardware acceleration
You know how long we've been waiting for Flash video to get decent hardware acceleration? Well, it looks like the Google-backed WebM VP8 codec won't take nearly so long. The WebM hardware development team just pushed out hardware decoder IP for VP8, which will let chip folks build WebM playback into their chipsets -- most of which are currently oriented around accelerating H.Google's-gunning-for it-264 and / or Flash. New iOS 4.3 beta returns the "screen lock" switch function
Uncovered in the new iOS 4.3 beta released to developers today is a setting the restores the "lock screen orientation" functionality of the "mute" switch that was taken away iOS 4.2, Gizmodo reports. The control, originally created for iPad users, is now handled by a setting that allows users to choose whether to use the hardware switch for muting or for screen orientation. The change was unpopular with iPad owners, though orientation locking was still accessible via software.
