Subsidized iPads failing at Orange UK?
Orange UK did much poorer than expected in launching subsidized iPads during the holidays, according to industry sources. The carrier is said to have been expecting tens of thousands of iPad sales, helped by a cheaper £199 base price tag tied to a two-year contract. In reality the company only sold 1,000 or so in the first week, the sources claim.

Apple's market cap passes $300 billion
After blasting through the $330 per share for Apple's stock today, the company now has a market capitalization valued at around $302 billion dollars. While market cap isn't everything, this is a substantial shift from the way things used to be. Apple used to be the underdog!
Remember when Apple was on life support in the '90s after a series of bland and uninspiring CEOs and product lines? Since the return of Steve Jobs and his hand-picked crew of innovators, however, the company has seen a truly remarkable rise in profits and marketshare while expanding into completely new markets for the company. Man eats iPhone 4 at New Year's Eve celebration
We admit, we tricked you a bit with that headline -- India's Krishna Kalyan actually ate a cake for New Year's Eve, which is not nearly as extraordinary (or painful) as actually chowing down on a Retina Display and an A4 processor. But it was a cake that looked remarkably like an iPhone 4 -- as you can see to the right, the screen is very detailed, with fully-rendered icons (and even some push notifications waiting to be read as well). Sure, the shape is a little more cake-like than iPhone-like, but I like the tasty little home button and the frosting dock connector down below.
The only thing missing? Get those icons in some folders, man! You've just got them hanging out all over the place. And while we're at it, does anyone really keep their Photos or iTunes Store apps

Opera preps version for tablets
In a short video, Opera announced on its blog that it will demo the new Opera for Tablets at CES 2011. The video shows the browser running on the Samsung Galaxy Tab and highlights its scrolling and zooming functions. The video did not clarify whether Opera for Tablets would be available solely as a download, such as Opera Mini for iOS (App Store) and Mobile for Android, or if it would also be customized and embedded in yet-to-be specified tablet devices.

Angry Birds gets real... corporeal (in China, at least)
Let's be honest: you can never get enough of Angry Birds, but for those wandering around Guangzhou, China, you might be able to get your fix at this arcade booth. Like the game itself, there's an actual slingshot for firing your enraged fowls at a bunch of plush doll piggies, except there are no special abilities like explosion or splitting -- maybe the next version will take care of that, unless Rovio Mobile decides it's game over for these guys.Angr

More Best Buy program details revealed: tablets included
A follow-up by BGR to a story from earlier this morning has revealed more details on Best Buy's upcoming Buy Back program. Unlike originally believed, the program will extend to notebooks, netbooks, TVs, and tablets in addition to smartphones, though all will need to cost under $5,000. The scheme will also go live January 5 and be expanded to other product categories sometime in 2012.

Swann shows off SportsCam ahead of CES debut
Ahead of its public unveiling at CES, security camera maker Swann Security has officially taken the wraps off its rugged, waterproof DVR-460 SportsCam. The device can take still photos and videos at up to under 65 feet of water, though at just 640x480 resolution. There is no internal memory onboard, with all recordings and photos stored on microSD cards.

Der Bug sollte sich eigentlich heute selbst beheben - das hat offenbar nicht geklappt.Seit dem 1. Januar 2011 funktioniert bei vielen iOS 4 Nutzern die Wecker-Anwendung des iPhones nicht mehr zuverlässig. Toshiba shows of glasses-free 3D Qosmio, says technology could hit laptops in 2011
It's no secret that Toshiba's got a thing for glasses-free 3D displays and that it's been putting together 3D concept laptops based on the technology, but according to Toshiba's director of product marketing Phil Osako, the company could be ready to bring a 3D laptop sans spectacles to market by the end of the year. Install Mac OS X on a Cr-48 Chrome notebook
In the hackintosh tradition, we present this method of installing Mac OS X onto a Chrome Cr-48 notebook using hexxeh's Luigi firmware toolkit. You'll void your machine's warranty in the process, as you've got to remove the bottom cover to activate developer mode.
Once that's done, you can flash the machine, install the custom firmware and then install Mac OS X. It seems like a lot of work to us. If you like watching videos of a computer booting over and over again, blurry, illegible terminal commands and ear-splitting music, you'll find a real treat after the break.

Italy rules YouTube and other video sites are like TV stations, are liable for content
Strange policy changes are afoot in Italy, where the government's Communications Authority has just issued two resolutions that effectively turn YouTube and other video services into TV stations subject to stricter regulation -- and stricter liability for the content they host. Under the new rules, any site that exercises even the smallest amount of editorial control over its content will be considered an "audiovisual service," and have to pay additional taxes, take down videos within 48 hours if anyone complains of slander, and -- most oddly of all -- somehow refrain from broadcasting videos "unsuitable for children" at certain times o

Android Honeycomb may require dual-core, strand Galaxy Tab
Google's requirements for Honeycomb could be so high that they abandon every Android tablet buyer from the past few months, electronics company Enspert's managing director Bobby Cha said on Monday. While a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 chipset like NVIDIA's Tegra 2 is already known to be the reference point, it may now need that performance just to "run properly," according to the Korean executive. He also told PCMag that it would require at least a 720p screen, although seven-inch tablets would be possible alongside 10-inch examples.

iPhone alarm still not working for some, here are a few solutions
It amazes me that for all the amazing technology and innovation out of Cupertino, they can still manage to screw up a simple alarm function on the iPhone. Chris wrote about this issue on New Year's Eve, but it appears the Clock app is still having trouble setting off one-time alarms as of today. Sprint EVO Shift 4G shows up on Walmart's website, HTC teases big in Vegas

Apple breaks $300 billion in market cap
Apple's market capitalization has cracked the $300 billion barrier, tracking data shows. The milestone comes as a result of Apple stock rising by more than $7.30 in Monday trading to sit close to $330, in fact giving the company a cap in excess of $302 billion. The achievement makes Apple the second-most valuable corporation in the world after multinational oil giant Exxon.

Details of AMD's Radeon HD 7000M already leaking out
AMD is planning to make a significant leap in performance with a sequel to its just-launched Radeon HD 6000M video, a detailed leak gave out on Monday. The Radeon HD 7000M series should be AMD's first notebook graphics built on a much smaller 28 nanometer process and run both faster and more efficiently as a result. Donanim Haber understood that its flagship chipset, Wimbledon, would be targeted at desktop replacements and would be as much as 25 percent faster versus its yet-to-ship 6000M equivalent.

Nielsen says Apple is holding onto the smartphone lead for now
New numbers from Nielsen research show Apple still in the top spot in US smartphone sales. Android numbers continue to surge, while Blackberry is declining.
Citing November 2010 data, Nielsen says Apple has 28.6% of the domestic smartphone market, up ever so slightly from 27.9% in October. Blackberry has slipped to 26.1%, while Android has amassed a 25.8% share.
Even more interesting is data that says of those buying a smartphone in the last 6 months, 40.8% bought Android phones, while iOS phones had a 26.9 percent share, RIM grabbed 19.2% of the new buyers for its Blackberry phones.

Spectec CameraJet system promises to bring UWB connectivity to your camera
Not satisfied with an Eye-Fi card to add some wireless connectivity to your digital camera? Then it looks like you'll soon have another option courtesy of Alereon and Spectec -- they've just announced their Spectec CameraJet system, which consists of a Wi-Jet SD card and Wi-Jet USB dongle that combine to deliver a "faster than wire" Ultra Wideband (or UWB) connection suitable for both transferring files or streaming video. Barnes & Noble claims gangbuster holiday sales due to Nook
Barnes & Noble hinted that the Nook may have led to a major turnaround in its business. The company said its "comparable store sales," or those at large stores open for more than 1.25 years, were nearly double what it had expected, at 9.7 percent. Viacom in talks to return Daily Show, Colbert to Hulu
The The Daily Show and The Colbert Report could come back to the Hulu streaming service, a weekend report claimed. The two shows were pulled early last year when Comedy Central, owned by Viacom, and Hulu didn't agree on a price for distribution. Insiders for the New York Times said executives at the two were nonetheless negotiating for a return last month.

Final Cut updates due in March or April, Steve Jobs still sour on Blu-ray
Hardmac has kicked off the new year with some more rumors about Final Cut Studio being updated. We already knew (since the app wasn't updated past September) that Final Cut Studio has been due for some streamlining, and Hardmac says that indeed, there are multiple beta versions running around. There are reportedly both versions for Snow Leopard and the new OS X Lion being tested at Apple, with the Lion version taking advantage of some new video magic made available in Quicktime. CyWee makes iOS wireless video streamer official
CyWee has just made official its wireless video streaming device for Apple's iOS devices. Alarm clock apps for iOS and Mac
Now that the iPhone's built-in Clock app has suffered two alarm-hindering hiccups, some users are ready for an alternative. Sure, Apple says the latest issue, affecting non-recurring alarms set for January 1st and 2nd of 2011, will be "fixed" as of January 3. ASUS, PrimeSense bring Kinect to computers with WAVI Xtion
ASUS and the Kinect's key technology creator PrimeSense today say they were developing a computer-specific motion controller. iOS reaches 1.7% share of the web, Windows 7 hits 20%
Both iOS and Windows 7 were the winners for share of the web, Net Applications found in its December wrap-up. Thanks mostly to an equal mix of the iPad and iPhone, Apple's mobile platform reached 1.69 percent in December, up a relative 24.3 percent from a month earlier. Android's growth rate was faster, at about 29 percent, but its total 0.4 percent share widened the relative lead in web use.

Analyst: Apple product plans likely to quiet down in 2011
Apple is likely to quiet down its release schedule for 2011, at least in comparison to 2010, suggests Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Apple's Greek support provider sues customer for hurting its feelings
Things are fine in Denmark, but they're rotten in Greece.
Dr. Dimitrios Papadimitriadis (@papadimi on Twitter) was disturbed by some dark spots on his iMac's display, so he took it to Systemgraph (AKA System Graph Technologies), Apple's official warranty support provider in Greece. Systemgraph recommended that the iMac LCD panel be replaced, and that the entire computer receive a good cleaning inside and out.

Romero classic, Night of the Living Dead, a radioactive satellite falls to earth and causes the dead to rise from their graves -- but what if the satellite itself had become a zombie? That's the slightly less frightening reality that has befallen Intelsat's Galaxy 15 communications satellite, which "went rogue" in April of 2010 and has been unresponsive ever since -- even though it has continued to transmit signals. Best Buy leak shows Buy Back program for chronic upgraders
Best Buy Mobile will soon launch a buy back program for smartphone users who constantly upgrade their devices before they're out of contract, according to a leak from BGR. Full details aren't known, but the Buy Back program will give users the option to pay $60 when first purchasing their handsets to get the option of trading in their handsets between one and six months of ownership and get back 50 percent of the phone's original full retail value. The refund amounts get smaller for longer periods, and all assume that the handset is in good condition.

A report circulating over the holiday weekend suggests Verizon is buying up Verizon iPhone-related domain names in anticipation of an impending CDMA iPhone launch. The domain names, iphoneonverizon.com and iphoneforverizon.com, were transferred to Verizon Wireless Trademark Services, LLC, a company that also holds the main Verizonwireless.com domain.

Next Final Cut coming in split Snow Leopard, Lion versions?
The next Final Cut Studio should ship in March or early April, and be a "substantial update" if not as feature-complete as some people may be expecting, according to information obtained by Hardmac. Trickle: A Twitter client with a refreshing difference
It seems like whenever somebody decides to become an iOS developer, the first thing they do is come out with a new Twitter client. Twitter clients were the fart apps of 2010. As a result, most of the time when word of a new Twitter client appears in my inbox, I trash the email without even looking.
Trickle (US$0.99) is refreshingly different. It does just one thing, and it does it very well: it displays the latest tweets of people you're following in bold white Helvetica letters on a black background. That's it. You can't use the app to respond or come up with your own clever tweets; you just read 'em as they come in. Developer Caleb Thorson refers to the app as a "passive Twitter client."

The iPhone has overtaken the BlackBerry as the top-selling smartphone in the US but is still facing stiff competition from Android, Nielsen revealed in new study data today. Apple passed RIM in September and is now estimated to have 28.6 percent of the American market to itself. Samsung Nexus S auf 1,2 GHz übertaktet

Apple service company sues customer over botched repair
An Apple-authorized reseller and service company, Systemgraph, is taking one of its customers to court for complaining about bad service, reports say. A Greek man, Dimitris Papadimitriadis, recently brought his iMac to Systemgraph in order to fix dark patches in the display. The company is said to have recommended interior and exterior cleaning, and then a replacement LCD panel. The results are alleged to have been even worse however, with trapped moisture and an unfixed LCD.

Das neue Jahr 2011 verspricht wieder ein interessantes Jahr zu werden. Bereits diese Woche startet Apple den Mac App Store und will damit die Erfolgsgeschichte des App Stores von der iOS-Plattform auf OS X und somit auf den Desktop bringen. Gleich mit dem Start des neuen Stores wird in der Apple-Gerüchtebranche auch davon ausgegangen, dass die iWork-Suite in einer neuen Version — «iWork ‘11» — erscheinen wird. Dank des Mac App Stores sollen die drei Apps der Suite neu auch erstmals einzeln erhältlich sein. Ob sich diese Gerüchte bewahrheiten, zeigt sich bereits am Donnerstag, 06. Januar 2011, dann nämlich öffnet der Mac App Store seine Pforten.

Qualcomm ups spending on mirasol display plant by $1 billion
Qualcomm will invest an additional $1 billion in a Taiwanese computer display plant to produce its mirasol displays, according to a posting on Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs website. A spokesman from the ministry clarified that the newest investment will be in addition to the joint venture Qualcomm formed with Taiwan's Cheng Uei Precision Industry Co. in 2009 to produce the displays. The very low power screens don't require backlighting, are responsive enough for animation, and should dramatically extend battery life in e-readers, smartphones and tablets.

VIZIO has unveiled more about its plans for the new year which seem to consist largely of a huge push on Android, from the 4-inch phone and 8-inch tablet running a (still unspecified) flavor on their 1 GHz processors, to new VIA Plus HDTVs and Blu-ray players with Google TV built in. The VIA Tablet and VIA Phone (not necessarily final names, judging from the PR) have a few other details mentioned, while we don't know if the phone is GSM or CDMA, it does have a 4-inch screen, WiFi N, GPS, MicroSD slot, dual cameras and HDMI output, while the 8-inch tablet brings similar chops minus GPS and any sort of 3G connectivity.

TUAW's Daily App: Super Blast 2
I have to admit that I never played Super Blast, but the sequel has entertained me for a little while now. It's a straight-up shooter game with a nice, easy control scheme. All you do is tilt your device to aim and shoot, and you can occasionally tap the screen to clear it with a bomb. It's a tried-and-true premise, and it works well. My one complaint is that it's hard sometimes to tell how your ship is doing and/or when the enemies are actually taking damage. On bosses with large amounts of health, you usually have to just fall back on watching the numbers, and that's a little more boring than it could be.
The game's power-ups are quite fun, and the graphics are excellent, featuring almost whimsical 3D alien models with extremely high resolutions that look excellent on the

Toshiba previews Honeycomb tablet, won't ship until June
Toshiba today showed off its second ever Android tablet with a very early look at a new 10-inch model. The unnamed design uses a 10-inch display but has upgraded from the Folio 100's Android 2.2 to the tablet-native Honeycomb, or Android 2.4. Like its predecessor, it will use NVIDIA's twin-core Tegra 2 chip and support 1080p video, but it will be upgraded to a 1280x800 display and support both a five-megapixel back camera and a front two-megapixel example.

10 Millionen Samsung Galaxy S verkauft

Jetzt hat das Galaxy S nun auch die 10 Millionen-Schallmauer durchbrochen nach insgesamt sieben Monaten auf dem Markt. Das wurde nun von offizieller Seite bestätigt. Das iPhonEKG – iPhone Case als EKG
Das iPhoneEKG ist ein zwar etwas hässliches, aber wirklich sehr praktisches iPhone Case. Es kommt anscheinend ohne Strom aus (zumindest konnten wir keinen Akku erkennen) und verbindet sich drahtlos mit dem Smartphone. Mit Hilfe von zwei Elektroden auf der Rückseite misst es die Herzspannungskurve und stellt so euren Puls fest. Dazu gibt es zwei Apps.

Vizio reveals Via Tablet and Phone with Android, sub-$300 3DTVs ahead of CES
Vizio made its name by packing high end features into value-priced HDTVs and it's taking that mentality to new areas, revealing the tablet we spotted in last night's Rose Bowl ad as the 8-inch Via Tablet and a 4-inch Via Phone. Both will be running Android and while CTO Matthew McRae didn't spill any OS details to the Wall Street Journal, the combination of confirmed Market access and odd button configuration has us thinking Honeycomb is in the works when they are released this summer. The only Via Phone details mentioned are screen size and its front and 5MP rear cameras, while the tablet

Vizio confirms Android-based tablet, smartphone
Vizio on Sunday afternoon confirmed many of the details behind its Rose Bowl tablet teaser. The erstwhile TV maker is now getting into mobile devices and will use Android for the Via Tablet, an eight-inch slate with a front camera, three speakers and Wi-Fi alone for Internet access. A matching Via Phone will have a four-inch display, a back five-megapixel camera and its own front camera.
