Connecting your Mac to the Internet in Egypt
The political unrest in Egypt and its Internet blackout is all the buzz today in international matters. Several TUAW readers have written in asking if we had any advice for Mac users in Egypt to gain access to the Internet. The secret in a blacked-out country apparently lies in using cell phones for dial-up networking.
You'll find an excellent write-up for Windows users over at Manalaa.net. The write-up offers step-by-step how-to as well as a list of dial-up provider numbers based in the US and France. For Mac users, accessing dial-up Internet is a little more challenging.
As far as we can Google, dial-up Internet is not available on the iPhone. TUAW contacted MyWi developer Mario Ciabarra, who said that the technology was theoretic

DIY Tricopter geht auf Ballonjagd (Video)

Klar, man kann sich natürlich ganz einfach und gelassen in die Robokalypse fügen und sich darüber freuen wie unpräzise die Dinger noch sind (obwohl das hier wohl eher gewollt als nötig ist). Egal. Zumindest scheint es in Schweden ein paar Leute zu geben, die ihrem Tricopter-UAV beigebracht haben, selbständig Ballons zu finden und sie mit Feuerwerkskörpern zu zerstören. Cord-cutter experiment tests Apple TV, Boxee, Roku and Xbox
Marketing firm Hill Holiday this weekend posted the results of an experiment in cord cutting, or dropping traditional TV for digital media devices. Each family was given one device among several, including the Apple TV, http://www.electronista.com/reviews/boxee-box.html">Boxee Box, Google TV, Roku and Xbox 360, and had to stop using traditional TV. The week-long, recorded test (video below) revealed mixed results and showed that none of the companies were entirely where they needed to be, according to the researchers.

PSA: Change your old Amazon.com password for better security
Amazon's allegedly got an security flaw where hackers can find your password much easier than they would otherwise, andt here's already a fix in place. But get this -- you'll probably need to change your password for the fix to take affect, if you haven't already done so in the last couple of years. According to Reddit users, the Amazon.com login system will actually accept any phrase so long as it begins with your password, such as "password123" when the magic word is simply "password" by itself. That apparently makes it that much easier for a computer to guess your password via brute force methods, no matter how counter-intuitive that seems, so if you simply change it immediately -- and to something other

Die diesjährige MacWorld San Francisco, veranstaltet wie immer im Moscone Center, ist vorbei. AMDs Namenschaos macht weiteren Athlon zum Phenom

Chrysler shows off Ram plug-in hybrid electric truck, won't sell it to you
There's already a few hybrid trucks on the market (most notably from GM), but true plug-in hybrid electric trucks are another matter altogether. Chrysler now looks set to change that, however -- at least in a small way -- with its new Ram plug-in hybrid that's set to roll out to fleet operators this summer. It was just unveiled at the Washington D.C. Auto Show, and it pairs a 12 kWh battery pack from Canadian battery-maker Electrovaya with Chrysler's own 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine, which Electrovaya says will allow for up to 20 miles of driving on electricity only. Android 2.3-Bug ermöglicht Zugriff auf die SD-Karte

Ein Wissenschaftler der North Carolina State University warnt vor einer Schwachstelle bei Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), die Angreifern den Zugriff auf persönliche Informationen erlaubt. Laut Xuxian Jiang ermöglicht der Bug entsprechend präparierten Webseiten, den Inhalt der im Gerät verwendeten microSD-Karte hochzuladen, mitsamt Voicemails, Fotos und Onlinebanking-Daten. Macworld 2011: Wigglehop, a new kind of movie app
We've all seen the ton of movie apps and probably have a bunch of them already on our iOS devices, but today I saw something different. I spoke with Tyler Young, the designer of a free universal app called Wigglehop from Plastic Trophy. Wigglehop is a movie planning app which differs from the usual movie look-up app.

VoiceActivator, full voice control for jailbroken iPhones
A Cydia app developer is close to bringing VoiceActivator, a full-featured voice control app to the Cydia store for jailbroken iPhones. While the iPhone currently offers Voice Control on the iPhone, the feature is relatively limited. Currently, iPhone users can use Voice Control to make calls, control music and use it for FaceTime. Switched On: A suite segment for PlayStation games

One thing that has set Sony apart from its home console rivals has been the extended lifecycles of its hardware. Riding the momentum of a massive install base, both the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 each kept selling strong nearly a decade after their debut, and years after their respective successors were introduced. In fact, as late as 2009, Audiovox began offering a PS2 integrated into an aftermarket ovehead car video system with a 10" screen. Sony could pursue this strategy in home consoles because the PS2 was the runaway unit volume leader of its generation. Not so with the PSP.

It's been a long time since we used a laptop that had a monochromatic display -- it was a giant white block of a thing that is not missed -- but flip around just about every laptop we use today and you find a backside that stubbornly refuses to change color no matter the light that hits it. First Look: Sanho's 2nd-gen HyperDrive for iPad
Sanho has introduced an updated version of its HyperDrive hard drive featuring iPad compatibility. The new device was on hand at Macworld Expo, where MacNN took a closer look. Macworld Expo 2011: iFixit wields their magic in person
On stage at Macworld 2011, two of our friends from iFixit, Kyle Weins and Luke Soules, attempted to fix broken Apple stuff right in front of an audience. The session was moderated by Chris Breen, who asked the audience to bring up their broken gear in the hope that it could be fixed right on the spot.

Macworld 2011: eyeSky brings a security system to iOS
Only a few things have impressed me on the show floor this year, but I ran into something that's pretty amazing. The only problem is, like most of these kinds of solutions, that it's also very expensive.
eyeSKY Technologies, an American distributor for a German security company named Mobotix Corp, has been showing its Hemispheric IP Video Door Station. What this thing does is provide a customizable security system for the well-heeled. WeSC Karmatech concept makes your shoes more social with RFID
We've been seeing more and more shoes infused with different sorts of technology in recent years, but none quite like this WeSC Karmatech concept developed by some students at Sweden's Hyper Island "digital school."
