ASUS tablets already delayed, may not get Android 3.0
ASUS' Eee Pads and Eee Slates using Android have not only been delayed but might ship without Android 3.0, company marketing specialist John Swatton said Wednesday. The announcements, which mentioned a spring shipping window and the new OS across the board, were a "mistake," he told the Inquirer. They would instead ship in summer and would be limited to Android 2.3, Google's most recent phone OS.

Soeben hat Apple die erste iOS 4.3 Beta für Entwickler veröffentlicht. Es geht also mit großen Schritten auf das neue große iOS Update zu. AT&T 'evaluating' support for iOS Personal Hotspot, no plans yet
Although you'd think AT&T would be all over the Verizon iPhone's new personal hotspot feature if only just to keep feature parity with its biggest competitor, the carrier is taking a more measured approach -- an AT&T spokesperson just told us that they're "evaluating the feature, but have no plans to announce at this time." Sony to announce PSP2 at January 27th Tokyo meeting?
Sony has a January 27th meeting in Tokyo to discuss "business [overview] and strategy." That much is true (and confirmed by Joystiq to Sony). Apple seeds iOS 4.3, new Apple TV firmware to developers
Apple has seeded two important iOS updates to developers. One is the first public beta of iOS 4.3, build 8F51448b. Several different downloads are available through the iOS Dev Center, oriented at the different devices. Apple has also published a new beta of the Apple TV firmware, for the first time allowing testing of AirPlay in web or third-party apps.

IOGEAR Bluetooth keyboard can sync with up to six devices
IOGEAR has recently unveiled a new Bluetooth keyboard, the Multi-Link Bluetooth Keyboard with Touchpad. Also known as the GKM611B, it allows users to switch between device such as game consoles, desktop PCs, notebooks, home theater PCs and other Bluetooth-enabled gear it can control. The range extends out to 30 feet, like other Bluetooth devices.

Sprint drops Galaxy Tab down to $300, undercuts everyone but US Cellular
What now, Verizon? Just a few days after Big Red lowered the price of Samsung's Galaxy Tab to $500 off-contract, Sprint's version has shed $100 -- which means you can now score it for $300 on a two-year deal. Hauppauge Broadway streams HDTV to iOS devices
Electronics maker Hauppauge has announced the Broadway, a new set-top aimed at iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. The hardware streams live HDTV to an Apple handheld after first compressing the video using H.264. The resulting media can be delivered locally over Wi-Fi, or to a remote place using any Internet connection.

New iOS beta released offering new gestures, Xcode updated with AirPlay services for apps
Well hello there, here's something new. On Apple's developer page for iOS 4.3 beta there's this gem:
"Test Multi-Touch Gestures for iPad
This beta release contains a preview of new Multi-Touch gestures for iPad. You can use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen; swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar; and swipe left or right between apps. Flow my tears, the newly-built robotic head of Philip K. Dick said
Yes, this is definitely a post (and video!) about a hand-built, robotic head of author Philip K. Dick, who died in 1982, leaving the world a trove of literature which could be turned into films like Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly. Sadly, he did not leave a robotic head of himself. It may surprise you to find out that this is actually not even the first robotic head of Philip K. Dick, it's apparently the second. This newly-built robo-PKD is meant to replace one that was famously lost in 2006, and was built by Hanson Robotics and Dutch public broadcasters VPRO. Iomega's SuperHero backup and charger for iPhone syncs without a PC
Iomega was at CES last week showing off its upcoming SuperHero Backup and Charger for the iPhone. You may ask why anyone needs a backup system for the iPhone as iTunes backs up your iPhone when you sync. The Iomega rep explained that many iPhone users don't plug their iPhone into a PC or Mac. They simply use a wall charger, downloading apps directly onto the phone, almost never syncing up with iTunes. Sources at Apple retail confirm this is the case. Personally, I plug my iPhone into iTunes every night to update my podcasts and apps as often as possible.

iOS 4.3 beta arrives for devs, brings AirPlay video support to apps
We'd been disappointed to find that iOS 4.2 only brought AirPlay video support to built-in Apple apps on the iPhone and iPad, but it looks like that's changing soon -- Apple just posted up the first iOS 4.3 beta, which allows devs to send video from apps or websites to an Apple TV. There's also a new beta of the Apple TV software for testing it out -- it doesn't have any version notes, so we don't know if it offers any additional features as well. T-Mobile 'interested' in iPhone, echoes past Verizon clues
Following the Verizon iPhone, a T-Mobile USA spokeswoman said the carrier wanted Apple's handset. The carrier was "interested in offering the iPhone" but warned that it was "Apple's decision" to make, she said. More details weren't forthcoming in the Seattle Times line of questioning.

PBS launches free iOS app for watching full-length video
PBS has just announced its own app for iPhone and iPod touch, and from the looks of it, it's a doozy (if you're super into PBS, that is). That's right, the free PBS app will allow you to watch full-length PBS productions on your device -- including its popular news programs like FRONTLINE and the PBS Newshour. You won't be able to watch everything that PBS offers just yet, but the app also has a built-in calendar which should be super useful if you happen to structure your entire life around PBS programming like we know some of our avid readers do. Verizon activates 16 new 3G sites in New York Metro area
Verizon has officially switched on 16 new cellular sites in the New York Metro area. Five of these are in Rockland County, namely in Monsey, Spring Valley, Suffern, Suffern Park and Palisades. Another five have been assigned to Suffolk County, within East Islip, Blue Point, Medford, Wading River and Village of the Branch.

Bodega and MacAppsThatRock help you find new Mac apps
I switched to the Mac several years ago, and I'm still finding apps that have been around for a long time that I wish I had known about sooner. Hopefully the Mac App Store will help, but it also raises two issues: 1) What about apps that aren't in the store (for whatever reason, perhaps because they don't fit Apple's guidelines), and 2) How do you find apps in the Mac App Store?
Turns out that "there's an app" for the former and a website for the latter.

Back in 2008, Lenovo's ThinkPad X200 was getting folks all hot and bothered, and it seems some people never cooled down. If you're one of the few looking to reignite the flames sparked when your first laid eyes on the laptop, take a look at this impressively rendered knockoff. Despite the absence of a Lenovo logo and slightly off dimensions, it really does look like the X200, -- that is, until you look under the hood. Trend Micro says iOS a 'more secure platform' than Android
Verizon customers and others who are picking up iPhones and iPads can rest assured that their shiny new iOS devices are going to be less likely than Android smartphones and tablets to pick up viruses and malware.
In a recent interview in Taipei, Trend Micro chairman Steve Chang said that Google's Android operating system is more susceptible to hacker attacks and viruses than iOS. Chang ought to know; his company is the leader in security software for corporate servers.
Chang noted that Android, which is an open-source operating system, makes it easy for hackers to "understand the underlying architecture and source code." Sony follows up, officially sues Geohot and fail0verflow over PS3 jailbreak
We figured Sony would follow up last night's temporary restraining order against Geohot and fail0verflow for distribution of the PS3 jailbreak with a copyright infringement lawsuit, and well, here it is. It's actually pretty straightforward, as far as these things go -- Sony alleges that George Hotz, Hector Martin Cantero, Sven Peter, and the rest of fail0verflow are:
Violating §1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which forbids bypassing access control measures;
Violating the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, which forbids accessing

T-Mobile UK changes data cap policy to new users only
After taking lots of flak for announcing a new fair usage data policy that will throttle mobile data speeds after subscribers reach 500MB, T-Mobile UK has now changed a small but key part of its scheme. It will now no longer apply this to existing users, but only those who are new or upgrading only. Once the 500MB limit is breached for these users starting February 1, they will no longer be able to watch online videos and be limited only to browsing the web, e-mailing and accessing social networking sites.

Dokobots game for iOS brings together the inevitable: robots and geolocation
Now, wait. Don't just write Dokobots off because you hate Foursquare this one has robots! While we've seen plenty of similar uses for geolocation, Dokobots operates as a sort of global scavenger hunt, with the ability to 'scan' the map of your surrounding area for items needed to charge up and repair your little robots. So far, we haven't gotten up the steam to walk the block and a half to pick up the batteries we need, but there's also a magnet tool for the super lazy, and other Dokobots will 'visit' your location over time, allowing you to record and photograph those moments for posterity. Hauppauge announces Broadway: live TV streaming for iPhones and iPads
Here's another solution for streaming TV in your home or over 3G: Hauppauge Computer Works has just announced the new Broadway box. The US$199.00 device has a built-in HD H.264 video compressor, an ATSC tuner for local broadcasts, and support for QAM digital cable, so if that's all you want, the box can be used on its own. It also allows hookup to your cable or satellite box.
The programming you select can be viewed over Wi-Fi or the Internet on any iOS device. Details are a bit sketchy, and despite the announcement at CES 2011, the Broadway hasn't even shown up on the Hauppauge web site.
It looks like a solid competitor to the SlingBox line, but we'll wait until we actually see one

Samsung Mobile boss confirms Galaxy S successor, Galaxy Tab roadmap being announced next month
Far be it from Samsung to announce an extremely high-end US-only smartphone -- the Infuse 4G for AT&T, pictured above -- without a global equivalent, and it's starting to look like we'll get that equivalent in just a few weeks' time. Sony closing CD plant in face of digital music
Sony will close one of its biggest CD making factories due to the growth and popularity of digital downloads as well as other economic influences. Based in Pitman, New Jersey, the plant has been operating for 50 years and first produced vinyl records. When its doors close on March 31, nearly 300 people will be out of work.

Apple, Verizon negotiations from the inside
Bloomberg has posted an interview with Verizon Communications Inc. President Lowell McAdam that explores a bit of the lengthy process that brought the iPhone to Verizon. The technical acrobatics took the most time, while "the commercial deal took us a day," McAdam said.
The two companies actually built Verizon cell towers at Apple's Cupertino campus, and Apple also received "their own laboratory to play with," according to McAdam. Additionally, Verizon's executive director of technology David McCarley spent a year working at Infinite Loop.

Sprint, T-Mobile both plan special events, iPhone unlikely

Trio of analysts increase Apple estimates
Three financial analysts have decided to upgrade their estimates for Apple, most notably Barclays Capital's Ben Reitzes, who has raised a price target for Apple stock from $390 to $420. The analyst unusually cites the influence of FaceTime, the video calling technology first introduced with the iPhone 4, and later brought to Macs and the iPod touch. Google Translate for Android turns one, introduces experimental Conversation Mode (video)

Sprint promises 'industry first' at February 7th event
Let's just end the speculation right here: a Sprint-locked CDMA iPhone on the heels of Verizon's wouldn't be much of an "industry first," so we're thinking that whatever the company has to unveil on the evening of February 7th in New York will be of a very different flavor. Verizon iPhone reportedly unaffected by "death grip" issue
After getting their hands on the Verizon iPhone at yesterday's press event, several people have noted that it seems unaffected by the "death grip" phenomena that troubled IPhone 4 users last year.

Google Places app reaches the iPhone with Hotpot reviews
Google on Wednesday brought out a native Google Places app for the iPhone (free, App Store). The feature already in Android lets users find shops and services and either find or create reviews in Google's Yelp-like Hotpot service. Mechanized joystick built to control iPhone tilt sensor, rack up high score
What do you do when you just can't get that high score you're looking for in Tilt to Live? You build a computer that's better at playing the game than you are. For Shane Wighton, that turned out to be a mechanized joystick for tilt-controlled iPhone games.
When Shane couldn't achieve the score wanted on Tilt to Live, he asked himself, "[Can] I program a computer to detect patterns in the enemies, be strategic, and make the best moves using its superior reaction time and raw processing power?"

Alright, folks -- if you've already got a T-Mobile UK account in your back pocket, you can breathe a sigh of relief, because that ugly new data cap doesn't apply to you. MacHeist bundle owners may be disappointed to discover that the latest version of Twitter for Mac removes the hidden Super Secret menu, which was covertly added by developers. This backdoor was included as a bonus for disgruntled customers who purchased the MacHeist bundle before Tweetie was acquired by Twitter. Bundle owners were promised a free update to Tweetie 2, but that update never materialized.

The latest skirmish in the lawsuit battles comes against Apple's application for a trademark on the term "App Store." The Qingdao Haiwan Bridge in Shandong Province is almost three miles longer than the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana, which was the previous record holder. Mobile Hotspot function rumored to come to all carriers with iOS 4.3
Boy Genius Report (BGR) suggests this morning that the personal hotspot feature described at yesterday's Verizon announcement will be a part of iOS 4.3 and will work on iPhones of all stripes (pending carrier support and approval, of course). Citing "sources," BGR says that users will be able to connect up to 5 devices over Wi-Fi to the iPhone's cellular connection, just as Verizon customers will be able to do. Verizon in an interview posted Wednesday provided extra insight into the deal behind the CDMA iPhone. Verizon is putting "heavy promotion" behind the iPhone, most likely at the expense of other platforms, claim industry sources cited by Kaufman analyst Shaw Wu. Microsoft challenges Apple's App Store trademark
Microsoft has filed a formal motion (PDF) for a summary judgment to dismiss Apple's trademark filing for the term App Store. The Windows developer claimed the concept of an app store was "generic" and that any fame associated with its formal title was secondary. It pointed out that Apple's own Steve Jobs used the term "app stores" as an unofficial term to refer to Android portals.

Appular released Push Panic last November, and it got somewhat lost in the midst of big iOS releases. At its core it's a Tetris-style falling block game, though it has elements of the old Same Game, too. Blocks fall from the top of the screen, and you have to tap and target same-colored blocks to delete as many as possible before the screen fills up. The action goes from simple to frenzied, and four different modes have you race to delete a certain number of blocks, chase scores and combos, or try to delete as many blocks as possible within a time limit.

Dexim's Frixbee and Visible G chargers on display at CES 2011
Accessory manufacturer Dexim had a whole booth full of charging products on display at CES, but two caught our eye while walking around the show floor. The first was the Frixbee induction charging setup above, which consists of an induction pad with room for two different devices and a case that goes on your iPhone 4. The case is pretty slim, though it takes up the iPhone's dock connector while charging, so I'd have to remove it when going out. The induction pad has a magnet in it that will help center your device in the right spot. Microsoft wehrt sich gegen den Schutz des Begriffs "App Store"

Klar ist, dass das App Store-Original von Apple kommt. Aber besitzt Apple damit auch die Rechte an der Bezeichnung "App Store"? Microsoft sagt nein und hat diese Woche einen Antrag beim US-Patentamt gestellt, "App Store" nicht zu schützen. Sowohl als Paar als auch einzeln seinen "App" und "Store" allgemeine Bezeichnungen. Ausserdem führt Microsoft ins Felde, dass Steve Jobs selbst in einem Interview von "App Stores für Android" gesprochen habe. Momentan sind Microsoft und andere Apple-Konkurrenten gezwungen, für ihr App Stores alternative Namen wie "Marketplace" zu finden.

Microsoft and Apple back away from Novell patent purchase
A consortium of several companies, including Microsoft, Apple, EMC and Oracle, has backed away from its plan to buy a large number of Novell patents. The companies had submitted a plan notifying German regulators of the decision to establish CPTN Holdings and purchase 882 of the patents, however the group withdrew its filing on December 30.

Google will H.264-Unterstützung aus Chrome entfernen

Petition gegen iPod-Steuer der SUISA
Die Piratenpartei Schweiz und die Jungfreisinigen Schweiz haben Anfang Woche eine Petition gegen die SUISA-Gebühr gestartet. Auf abgabenterror.ch werden Unterschriften gegen die «iPod-Steuer» gesammelt. Wie die NNZ am Sonntag berichtet, unterstützen auch diverse Parlamentarier die Petition, welche die Aufhebung eines Artikels über die Urherberrechte und die verwandten Schutzrechte fordert. In der Petition wird argumentiert, dass durch die SUISA-Gebühren auf digitale Musikabspielgeräte sowie leere CDs und DVDs die Konsumenten doppelt für die Nutzungsrechte bezahlen müssen. Zudem sei die Grundannahme, dass auf diesen Datenträgern urheberrechtlich geschützte Inhalte gespeichert und wiedergegeben werden, für welche die beim Kauf nicht bereits Urheberrechtsabgaben bezahlt wurden, falsch. Die von der Gebühr pflichtigen Datenträger können neben urheberrechtlich geschützter Musik und Videos auch andere Daten speichern — die Gebühr wird also unabhängig von der tatsächlichen Nutzung erhoben. Abschied von H.264: Google setzt mit Chrome auf WebM
Google verabschiedet sich mit seinem Web-Browser Chrome vom Video-Codec H.264 als HTML5-Video-Standard. Stattdessen möchte das Unternehmen auf die offenen Codecs WebM (VP8I) und Theora setzen, um “offene Innovation” zu ermöglichen. Myspace entlässt knapp die Hälfte seiner Mitarbeiter

Schiller: No Verizon apps "side-loaded" on iPhone
Carrier-added applications on smartphones are often the bane of users, and Verizon is one of the leading proponents of "side-loaded" apps, more commonly known as "crapware" because it generally exists only to promote additional -- and often unwanted -- services, or was placed on the phone due to a payment to the carrier by a company. TiVo says iPad app due by end of January

MetroPCS finally prepping Android smartphone with LTE from Samsung?
LTE's great but only if it's got phones and modems that can take advantage of it. Though MetroPCS beat Verizon to become the first American carrier to launch the technology, it's been scraping by so far with nothing other than the Samsung Craft, a middling dumbphone without the chops to attract the powerusers that would normally want to be involved with a 4G network anyway. As one of our last appointments on the floor of CES, we went out to a meeting room way back in the back of the South Hall to talk to Tom Murray, Senior Vice President of Market Development for Tom Tom, one of the leading companies selling navigation devices and software. Trend Micro: Android much less secure than iPhone
Trend Micro chairman Steve Chang warned in an interview published today that Android was significantly more open to attack than iOS. Google's decision to allow some open-sourcing and to have only a light approval touch let malicious coders get more information about how to stage viruses and other malware. Apple's decision to close off much of the iPhone OS, sandbox code and to vet apps more closely may have antagonized some, Chang told Bloomberg, but has also led to a more secure platform.

Notion Ink Adam delayed pending FCC certification
Just when it seemed the Notion Ink Adam had escaped the pit of dubious pre-orders and moved onto the glowing preview stage, here comes another hurdle to trip up its 10-inch PixelQi screen. Honestly, we never thought people could get this high and drunk in Vegas, but the guys from WVIL were really pushing it. Their crime? A blatantly staged viral campaign for an "unbelievable" smartphone that sports a 31 megapixel CMOS full frame sensor. Yantouch Black Diamond 3D ambience iPhone dock hands-on
While we weren't busy kicking up dust on the CES floors, we sat down with Taiwan-based Yantouch to have a fiddle with its latest product, the Black Diamond. When not in use, it really is just a gorgeous spherical black diamond, or at least its faceted front half is; but slip in an iPhone 4 with the Black Diamond app enabled, and you get a funky sound sensitive mood lamp. On top of that, the dock also charges up your iPhone while it shows off its colors, and somewhere at the bottom there's some black magic that channels out amplified audio from the phone, although actual speakers would be even nicer.

Official Playstation app for iPhone now available
Sony announced its official Playstation app was coming to iOS last month, and now it has landed in the App Store. The PlayStation App hooks into Sony's PlayStation network by requiring you to login using your network ID. The gaming-oriented application lets you follow your friends, find the games they own and read their status updates. You can also monitor the trophies that you have earned and keep track of current happenings via the PlayStation blog. While the PlayStation app lets you digest gaming-related information and browse your friends' info, it does not let you play actual games.

Apple hoping to open Brooklyn store in Atlantic Yards development
Sure, Apple's Fifth Avenue retail store may be New York City's fifth most-photographed location, but Brooklynites need their Apple fix too -- and it seems that Apple wants to be sure to take care of them. While not confirmed yet as of this writing, The New York Observer reports that Apple is looking at putting its fifth NYC store near the proposed Atlantic Yards arena, a mixed-use commercial and residential development and future home to the New Jersey Nets basketball team in the Prospect Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn.

Gear4's Pocket Loops keyboard (we also saw their Unity Remote running at CES last week) represents something I think we'll see a lot more of -- devices designed to work only when paired with a smartphone or tablet device. iPhones and iPads are leading the way into a new era of mobile devices, and I think more and more toys and products will do what the Pocket Loops keyboard does: offload the heavy lifting of processing to a mobile device, and instead focus on bringing an interface into play.

Comcast-NBC deal may face net neutrality terms for 7 years
A merged Comcast and NBC would have to live under net neutrality conditions for at least seven years, according to escaped details from the FCC's proposed terms. Regardless of what would happen with neutrality rules, it would be banned from blocking or throttling rival content as well as from prioritizing its own services, such as Hulu. It further couldn't use set-top boxes or other hardware to steer customers towards its own content at others' expense, Bloomberg heard from FCC tipsters.

Apple awarded 563 patents in 2010, double that of 2009
Breaking onto the list of the top 50 companies with approved patents in a year for the first time ever, Apple was awarded 563 patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its inventions in 2010, double the 289 approvals from 2009. AppleInsider reports that IFI Claims Patent Services has listed Apple as No. 46 on the list for the year, with most of its approvals coming from patent applications which were filed five or six years ago.

iOS 4.3 may bring hotspot to GSM iPhones as well
An upcoming update could give GSM iPhones the same mobile hotspot support as on the Verizon edition, a leak today hinted. Razer Hydra Sixense motion controller eyes-on
The technology behind the Hydra Sixense motion controller has been in development for a while now, but Razer was actually showing it off at CES this year. Unfortunately, it was strictly a hands-off situation at the booth -- we could only look on with jealousy as the Razer rep played through some gorgeous Portal 2 level.
