Apple trademarks 'Express Lane' and 'VoicePass'
Apple has filed two new trademarks right before the holidays this week. VoicePass is the first one -- it's filed in the category of "construction and repair services," so it likely has to do with supporting broken devices. MacNN says that the VoicePass service is used when calling in to customer support -- certain customers in the US and Canada can have a support number recognized automatically by the phone systerm, avoiding having to identify themselves every time they call. So this likely isn't a new service or implementation -- Apple is likely just filing to cover a little-known service it already r

News: Monster sues Fanny Wang claiming infringements on Beats
Monster Cable and Beats Electronics have filed a lawsuit against Fanny Wang Headphones, sister company to Hard Candy Cases and Gumdrop Cases, alleging that Fanny Wang’s recently debuted products infringe on a design patent and trade dress for the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, and engage in unfair competition. Santa plays Jingle Bells on a Christmas version of Accordéon
I just got a nice holiday email from Alex Komorov, the publisher of Accordéon, in which Santa plays Jingle Bells on the new Christmas version of the virtual accordion for the iPad. The holiday version costs US$3.99 and is decked out for the holidays. It includes a learning center where you can learn to play popular songs easily since the keys are lit up directing you what to push.
The only holiday song at present is Jingle Bells, which you can see played after the break. There is also an iPhone and iPod touch app called

Rovi announces agreement to acquire Sonic Solutions for $720 million

Rollei outs 3D camera, digital photo frame for Europe
Germany's Rollei has just introduced its Powerflex 3D camera and Designline 3D digital photo frame. The former has a five-megapixel sensor and sports a pair of lenses, just like Fujifilm's Real 3D W3. On the back is a 2.8-inch parallax barrier display that will show images in 3D without the need for 3D glasses.

Apple cooperates on Cherokee language support for iOS
Apple has been working with the Cherokee nation on adding Cherokee language support to iOS, the Associated Press says. The language has been slowing dying for some time, to the point that only about 8,000 out of 290,000 members of the tribe can speak it. Most of people who are familiar are at least 50 years old.

Briefly: SmartStart's new parking features, Kizashi racing
An update to the Viper SmartStart app for iOS has been released by Directed Electronics. The upgrade includes a new feature dubbed SmartPark, which marks a parking spot with GPS data. A car's location is recorded every time the door lock button is pressed, and can be recalled by pressing the Find My Car button. An associated SnakeEyes function presents a parking spot within an augmented reality view. SmartStart is a free download in the App Store, although using features beyond SmartPark requires Viper hardware.

HTC promises push into living room, built-in Netflix
HTC User Experience lead Drew Bamford in an interview on Thursday hinted HTC would make a deeper push into the living room and compete with companies like Apple and Roku. The company already has the Media Link, a basic gateway streamer for its phones, but he implied to Forbes it would go deeper. Stitcher has updated its main iPhone app, Stitcher Radio, to v4.2. The title provides on-demand podcast streaming, saving the time needed to find, download and/or sync files. News: Alcatel-Lucent company sues Apple, others over video patents
Multimedia Patent Trust (MPT), a subsidiary of telecom firm Alcatel-Lucent, has filed suit against Apple, Canon, LG, and TiVo, claiming patent infringement. Nuu MiniKey for iPhone 4 preview: yep, another (bulky) keyboard case

Skype says many users coming back online, compensation due
Skype on Thursday said that the majority of users were back online. CEO Tony Bates estimated to GigaOM that 16.5 million of the 25 million total simultaneous users could now login after Wednesday's worldwide outage. Voice as well as chat and video were back online, but conferencing on chat and video wouldn't be working for awhile as they were being used as supernotes for the peer-to-peer service, Bates said.

AT&T, Verizon spend most on lobbying, Apple spends little
Incumbent carriers AT&T and Verizon spent the most money lobbying the US government in summer 2010 while Apple and some other technology firms spent relatively little, newly published disclosure reports have uncovered. AmpliTube 2 for iPad gets new recording, export options
IK Multimedia has released a major upgrade of AmpliTube for iPad, version 2.0. The app performs multi-effects processing for guitar and bass. The new edition makes the important addition of a recorder; by default, however, it is limited to a one-track mode with re-amping support. Unclutter your Dropbox (or any folder) with Cloak
The good thing about iOS text editors and other programs which can sync with Dropbox is that you don't have to use iTunes to back up the documents that you edit on your iPad or iPhone/iPod touch. The bad thing is that almost all of them save their files in a specific named folder in your Dropbox. This can lead to a lot of folders that you probably never use on your Mac, but end up looking at anytime you open your Dropbox.
OS X gives you a way to hide those folders, but it usually involves the use of a command line utility called SetFile, which isn't included with Mac OS X unless you also install the developer tools. That's where Cloak (free, 611 KB

Fast ein Jahr, um genau zu sein, aber das Warten hat sich gelohnt. 10.1 Zoll kapaizitives Display, Android mit einem Interface, das man kaum noch wiedererkennt und an manchen Stellen stark an das iPad erinnert. Rollei goes 3D with Power Flex 3D point-and-shoot, Designline 3D photo frame
There may still be some camera makers resisting the 3D trend, but that's getting to be an increasingly dwindling lot -- the latest to jump into the game is Rollei, the 90-year old German manufacturer, which has just announced its new Power Flex 3D point-and-shoot and accompanying Designline 3D photo frame. Remember how Dell's supposed to be introducing a 7-inch Tegra 2-powered Android tablet, like, right now, possibly followed by a 10-inch model in a few months? FCC to require Comcast-NBC net neutrality, video for rivals
The FCC today said through unofficial channels it would likely demand tough conditions of the proposed Comcast-NBC merger. The deal will require Comcast to obey net neutrality rules more specifically and will prevent it from blocking or otherwise interfering with competitors' Internet traffic. Alcatel-Lucent trust sues Apple and others over video patents
Apple has been hit with yet another patent infringement lawsuit this week. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in the U.S. District Court for Southern California by the Multimedia Patent Trust. The MPT is a subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent that was formed when Alcatel merged with Lucent Technologies in 2006. The MPT controls and defends a block of patents previously owned by Lucent. The company has a litigious history and has filed infringement lawsuits against Microsoft, Dell, Disney and DirecTV.

Rovi Corp today confirmed that it was buying Sonic for $720 million in a blend of both cash and stock. Secret of Mana borrows a little bit from Legend of Zelda in that you always see all of your enemies on screen, and hack away at them in real time rather than in a turn-based battle or a separate mode.

We've heard before that iPad demand is super high around the world, and here's another reason why: households that already have an iPad are actually pretty likely to go out and buy another one. In a recent survey of Americans who own iPads, 17 percent said they already own more than one iPad, and another fifth (19 percent) said that they were considering purchasing another device in the future. And which device are they considering? Another iPad, of course. They're far from the first to put an all-electric car to an endurance test, but the team behind Moto Mundo are certainly near the head of the pack when it comes to sheer ambition. iPad 2 rumored to have flatter backside, smaller bezel, 'wide-range' speaker
According to Japanese Mac blog MacOtakara, the next-gen iPad will have a flatter backside and smaller bezel compared to the original iPad. The "iPad 2" will also have a larger "wide-ranged speaker" located behind a mesh speaker grille.
MacOtakara notes that their Chinese source has told them the next iPad will be three millimeters smaller than the original, but the display will stay the same size. That means the bezel surrounding the iPad's display should shrink substantially. The rear case has been flattened to be more like an iPod touch, which should make it easier to lay on a flat surface. Ion Personal Genome Machine: the DNA sequencer with an iPod dock
We're still struggling to find the speakers on this thing, but Life Technologies' new Ion Personal Genome Machine does at least have one big advantage over most other iPod docks: it's a personal genome machine. Curiously, the company itself isn't doesn't seem to be talking up the iPod dock at all, but MedGadget reports that it can be used to explore a genome and check on the status of given sequencing run with either an iPhone or iPod touch. Hirai: PSP2 to mix touch and buttons, benefit from Apple
Sony Computer Entertainment head Kaz Hirai in a discussion posted Wednesday evening confirmed that the PSP2 would have a touchscreen. The future gaming system, which had been in development virtually since the original was launched in 2004, would have a mixture of both buttons and touch. He wouldn't be drawn into specifics by the New York Times but portrayed it as a best-of-both-worlds scenario where games could follow either an iPhone-style model, a conventional PSP game, or elements of the two.

Urbanspoon iOS app adds individual dishes to user uploads
New visual and social features are coming to the restaurant-browsing app Urbanspoon for iOS devices. Urbanspoon makes random selections of local restaurants, with user-chosen filters such as price, neighborhood and type of food served. The app then offers specific and user-updatable information for selected restaurants. Version 1.17 adds support for user-uploaded images of individual dishes, allowing users to view food shots from other customers.

Pioneer releases 3D Blu-ray players controlled by iOS app
Pioneer has shipped out some brand new 3D Blu-ray players just in time to catch the tail-end of the holiday season (maybe they're hoping people making returns after Christmas will pick these up instead of whatever else they got). The players are actually pretty awesome, if indeed a Blu-ray player is what you want in this age of Netflix and Hulu. There's an Ethernet jack to watch those services, and of course they spit out the highest quality audio and video, with DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD surround, along with 1080p video upscaling.

Ableton is offering two free Live Packs as a holiday gift to all of its customers. The two packs have been created by Everett Bradley and Christopher Tignor, providing users with a funk-filled take on the classic Nutcracker Suite, as well as a number of string-based loops. Both packs use instruments that are only available as add-ons or as part of the Ableton Suite. This means users without the instruments will be limited to running the packs with saving and exporting functions disabled.

Nikon D7000 firmware update released, cools down 'hot pixels'
Hot on the heels of its P7000 firmware update, Nikon has just released one for its D7000 DSLR as well. The update was created for the sole purpose of fixing the hot pixel issue that pops up when taking videos in low light. While this doesn't completely eliminate the problem, the "bright spots" effect has been "reduced" according to Nikon USA. Mini's Connected app for iPhone live with radio, Google Maps
BMW's Mini badge this week quietly took its Mini Connected app (free, App Store) live for the iPhone. The long in development app gives any 2011 Mini with the Connected system access to phone features often tied into the car's own control stack. Internet radio pulled over 3G routes through the audio system, while RSS news feeds and Twitter can appear on the car display or (for news) spoken aloud on a Mini with voice control enabled.

Page Director Ad Layout now updated for Adobe, Quark
Publishing industry trade developer MEI has announced that their family of ad layout programs, including Page Director, ALS for Magazines and AdForce have all now been updated to v5.6.1 for compatibility with the latest versions of Adobe's InDesign CS5 and Quark's Xpress 8.5, while retaining compatibility back to InDesign CS4 and QuarkXpress 8. New iPad dock mimics Kinect's touchless input
Elliptic Labs, an Oslo-based startup, is set to introduce a new iPad dock that offers touchless input similar to that of Microsoft's Xbox Kinect sensor. Rogers said launching flex rate iPad, Galaxy Tab plans
Rogers may hope to preempt its rival Canadian carriers with a unique dynamic data plan created just for tablets. A new scoop said the Flex Rate plan would, like the voice plans, automatically bump up users depending on the amount of data they use. Stolen Mac tracking app Hidden free until January
Hidden is an app that claims to help you track down and find your Mac -- it runs in the background of your desktop computer, completely invisible, and only starts to send out location information when you actually go to the Hidden website and choose to flip it on. That way, if your Mac is ever stolen, you can log on from any computer and immediately get updates on where your stolen computer is, helping you track it down as quickly as possible. Getting it back is up to you, but just finding a stolen or lost computer is often all you need to do to provide proof that it's yours anyway.

Rumor gives next-gen iPad a bigger speaker, iPod-style shell
A new rumor today potentially clarified some of the details of the next iPad. A Chinese contact has supplied unusually detailed specs to Mac Otakara which reiterate that the iPad will keep the 9.7-inch screen but use a design similar to that of the iPod touch (mocked up here), but with an emphasis on audio. The mystery back slot on recent case leaks is for a larger, better-sounding speaker, the source said.

AT&T finally selling iPads at online store
They may be somewhat late to their own party, but MacNN is reporting that AT&T is now selling Wi-Fi + 3G iPads in their online store. Priced the same as in the Apple store, the AT&T store sells the 16 GB model for $629, the 32 GB for $729, and the 64 GB for $829, and ships them all for free. Data plans for all three models are also still the same, at 250 MB for $15 and 2 GB for $25.
