News Corp exec confirms tablet-focused news outlet
News Corp's Asia-Europe head James Murdoch today acknowledged the existence of the company's long-rumored tablet news source. The son of founder Rupert Murdoch told those at a Spanish investor's conference that the outlet, informally codenamed Daily Planet, would be detailed "soon." Details weren't forthcoming other than that it would be "tablet-only" and "very exciting," although the iPad is certain to get early support.

News: Chinese iPads carry two-year standard warranty
iPads sold in China come with a two-year AppleCare warranty as a standard option, according to a new report. SPB TV brings streaming TV to the iPhone and iPad, if you aren't too picky
SPB TV Free is a little app that gives you more than 100 free TV channels for your iOS device. You get channels from 17 countries, including a few in the US. The only problem? You may not be interested in the television shows the app makes available. There are English language broadcasts from NHK in Japan, and other channels from Italy and Germany. I tried a local Florida station, and instead of the station I got a traffic camera feed. There are some Public Access stations, but I saw mostly city council meetings and water rate hearings. NASA channels are there, but NASA provides an app to see them anyway. There is a old Western channel and one with sci-fi, along with two US Christian-oriented feeds.

LSI's WarpDrive SSD is a steal at $11,500
We want one of these so bad. The LSI WarpDrive SLP-300 packs 300GB of solid state storage onto a PCI Express card and promises up to 240,000 sustained IOPS (Input / Output Operations Per Second), with 1,400MBps sustained throughput -- about double the performance of OCZ's substantially cheaper RevoDrive X2. According to LSI, you would need over 400 regular hard drives in 36U of rack space and 300 times the power to match the WarpDrive for sheer IOPS. Sure, LSI recommends all sorts of fancy server applications to put this $11,500 card to good use, but we've been noticing some serious browser launch lag time lately and we're worth it.

Verizon starts smartphone family plan until Jan. 7
Verizon today confirmed that it was starting up a significantly timed smartphone plan for families. The deal will discount as much as $30 off of a family plan as long as it's attached to a $30 unlimited data plan, or enough to make the data use free. Prices start at $70 for two lines before the data plan or the discount takes effect.

Cellphones to get Emergency Broadcast System
The Emergency Broadcast System that will alert TV viewers of any emergencies may soon arrive on cellphones, Alcatel-Lucent said on Tuesday. The company is developing a Broadcast Message Center that will let government agencies send mass information regarding local, state or national emergencies. These text messages can warn users of anything from road closures to hurricanes and tornadoes.

Study picks iPad, other tablets as main buy for holidays
Of Americans planning to buy high-tech electronics during the holidays, most are picking the iPad or some other form of media tablet, says Retrevo. The shopping and review site recently conducted an online survey of over 1,000 people, which it says points to people spending 16 percent more on electronics this holiday period over 2009. After tablets, notebooks were the next most sought-after gadgets in the survey group, followed by non-3D TVs.

Hands on: FingerPrint enables AirPrint for many non-compliant OS X printers
FingerPrint is a new Mac OS X application from Collobos Software that enables AirPrint printing for many OS X printers. AirPrint is Apple's new wireless printing technology for iOS devices. Early PSP2 prototype allegedly surfaces with front camera
A purported leak today has shown what's described as an early prototype of the PSP2. The design, which is believed to have since changed, superficially resembles the PSP Go but with many extra features. Artifical retina reconstructs normal vision in mice, human trials next
Scientists have been working on artificial retinas for years, and while the main focus of research has been to increase the amount of light captured, a study led by Sheila Nirenberg, PhD, has taken a different tack. The new system being devised at Weill Cornell Medical College better mimics frontline photoreceptor cells, making it easier for the ganglion cells to output a more accurate image. Hitachi debuts 7,200 rpm 3TB Deskstar 7K3000 hard drive
Hitachi was the first to roll out a 7,200 rpm, 3.5-inch 2TB hard drive, and it looks like it's now done it again at the 3TB level. That comes in the form of the company's new Deskstar 7K3000 model, which appears to not only be the first 7,200 rpm 3TB drive hard around, but Hitachi's first drive with a 6Gbps SATA interface. Otherwise, the five-platter drive packs a 64MB cache buffer, an idle power draw of 6.8W, and what Hitachi describes as an eco-friendly, halogen-free design. Warner renews Spotify deal as US deal edges closer
Warner Music today renewed a deal with Spotify to keep offering its music. The deal is the first among the major labels and was touted as a positive by Warner chief Edgar Bronfman, who in the past had previously criticized free, ad-based music. Hulu Plus 2.0 app upgrades playback, iPad interface
Video service Hulu has upgraded the Hulu Plus iOS app to v2.0. The title should now have better playback performance, as well as "enhanced" queue and subscription functions. ThinkFast, LLC, a design firm in Louisville, Kentucky, has come up with a totally useful and unique iPad case that caught my attention. The Sleeve360 has a hand strap on the back with a 360° free-spinning pivot, so if you're using your iPad in such a way that you literally need it constantly at your fingertips, it's there. Early PSP2 dev kit in the wild?
Well, this is interesting. VG247 has published what it says are pics from an early Sony PSP2 development kit. There isn't much to go by in terms of back story, and in many ways it looks more like a KIRF from Mr. Blurrycam's vintage collection than something for software testing, but let's hear what the site has to say: HD screen, two cameras (front and rear), microphone, two thumbsticks, and a rear "trackpad" of sorts, presumably akin to what we've seen on the PS Phone leak. AT&T says HSPA+ network 80 percent done, mobile data slowing
AT&T's HSPA+ upgrade is now covering about 80 percent of its network, CTO John Donovan said at the Sencha Conference late Tuesday. The news makes the network almost complete and supports the company's claims of reaching 250 million potential users by the end of 2010. It was originally planned to run at 14.4Mbps but in many cases should run at up to 21Mbps.

Just when you thought that the frenzy over the popular iOS game Angry Birds had finally reached its peak, now comes word from the Virtual Goods Summit that the game's publisher plans on turning the franchise into an empire.
Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka dropped the eggs spilled the beans yesterday when he mentioned that the game is going to be available on all major gaming platforms soon, not just on mobile devices. Mogul aims at luring Apple assembly to Brazil
A corporate mogul, Eike Batista, is courting Apple with the hope it might be willing assemble products in Brazil, rather than China, a local publication says. MacMagazine notes that Batista is looking for companies to occupy 90 square miles at the Port of Acu, a project under construction in southeastern Brazil, valued at $1.6 billion. After decades of bickering that's nearly as infamous as the Beatles' breakup, the actual deal that finally united Apple, Inc., Apple Corps and EMI was hammered out in July, the Wall Street Journal reported today.

Native editing for Google Docs will be available on the iOS device closest to you within the next few days -- if not already.
Google issued a press release this morning, complete with a demo set to some snazzy music demonstrating the new editor in action. While Android and iOS aren't short on productivity applications for cobbling together a .doc and sending it on its way, we've been really hankering for native Google Docs support since pretty much day one. Google is finally ready to deliver, and it looks like they've actually put some thought into the UI, particularly on the phone end of things. It's been just over 24 hours since the release of The Beatles' complete back catalogue on iTunes and they are already dominating the album charts in a rather unusual way. In fact, as reported by MacObserver, within 12 hours of availability The Beatles had 15 albums placed in the Top 40 best-selling albums chart and 17 albums in the Top 100. HTC, Samsung see Windows Phone, Android dominating phones
Executives for HTC and Samsung in Thailand today said they expected that Android and Windows Phone 7 would have the greatest influence on the world smartphone market. National manager Nattawat Woranopakul thought that the Google and Microsoft platforms had the "biggest potential" and saw them having large market share worldwide by 2012. Onkyo outs 3G Windows 7 tablet for Japan only
Onkyo's outed a new Windows 7 tablet -- seems to be all the rage these days -- with KDDI 3G onboard. The 11.6-inch TW317A7 tablet boasts a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD, plus Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, card reader, two USB 2.0 ports, and stereo speakers. The 11.6-inch multitouch display has a 1366 x 768 resolution, and the tablet brings with it Onkyo's new custom ExTOUCH software which is apparently designed to enhance finger input in the OS and boasts a dedicated app launcher. The TW317A7 will be available in Japan very soon -- as in this week -- but Onkyo has yet to announce pricing.

Pearson's stable includes such imprints as Addison Wesley, Cisco Press, IBM Press, Que, Prentice Hall, Pearson IT Certification, and Sams. Apple has announced the appointment of Ronald D. Sugar to the company's board of directors. Sugar was most recently the CEO and chairman of the board at military/aerospace contractor Northrop Grumman; he is still a director at several other businesses, including Amgen, Chevron and Air Lease Corporation. As a member of Apple's board, Sugar will be responsible for chairing the Audit and Finance Committee.

Though the FiOS Football app for iPad only showed up on the App Store for a short time a couple of weeks ago, it was long enough for us to fall in love with having access to RedZone Channel video and stats in our laps while keeping the TV tuned to one key game. Skyfire drops Symbian, Win Mobile after Android, iPhone
Skyfire has quietly said it was dropping Symbian and Windows Mobile support for its browser. The two would phase out at the end of 2010 and would only see the more advanced Android and iOS 2.0 versions available in the near future. Both being initially free made them unsustainable, but the age of the apps and problems with the platforms themselves made it unrealistic to charge a device for a product that would be dropped earlier, Skyfire said.

The staggering size of iOS's game collection
How big is iOS as a gaming platform? I wondered to myself on an idle rainy afternoon. After all, we hear a lot about how the App Store has passed eleventy gajillion downloads, or how it makes people richer than astronauts, but I wanted some context around these numbers -- something to make the abstract mean something. I chose a subject close to my heart: games. And then I compiled the data that lead to the graph you see above.
iOS has nearly three times more games than the previous twenty-five years of gaming combined.

Apple's board of directors has been running pretty lean since the departure of Google's Eric Schmidt and the death of Jerry York, so a new director is welcome news. Today the company announced the addition of Dr. Ronald D. Sugar to the board; Sugar is the retired CEO of Northrop Grumman and previously worked at Litton Industries and TRW, Inc.
Sugar has a bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree in engineering from UCLA, and considering his aerospace background there's only one possible conclusion to draw from this appointment: Apple is making a flying car. No, no, just kidding.

Sony Japan today previewed a new HandyCam that would combine a 35mm equivalent sensor with the same E-mount lenses as its NEX cameras. The NXCAM would use a larger, film-equivalent CMOS sensor that Sony said could achieve the same bokeh (shallow depth of field) as film and DSLRs but which would be optimized for movies. White iPhone conversion kits land teenage entrepreneur in hot water
Since Apple's apparently having trouble making a white iPhone 4, a 17-year-old entrepreneur decided to do it himself. Fei Lam purchased white iPhone parts directly from Foxconn, the overseas factory that manufactures many of Apple's products, including the iPhone. He put up a website, WhiteiPhone4Now, that offers conversion kits consisting of the front and back plate plus home button; you can currently buy the complete kit for US$279. Since August, Lam has sold more than US$130,000 in conversion kits, which Lam says will help him pay for college.

We actually didn't know we had a camera strap problem until we saw this little promo video for C-Loop (embedded after the break). Now it's blindingly obvious, and we're not sure we can even go on taking pictures if we don't get a C-Loop, like, yesterday. The C-Loop itself is surpassingly simple: it screws into your camera's tripod mount and swivels. That's about it. You attach your strap to the C-Loop, naturally, and you get rid of strap tangle, improve landscape / portrait transitioning, and score +100 sex appeal instantaneously. Patently Apple's got a whole slew of new patent applications from Cupertino today. First up are the actual product designs of the original iPhone and the second-gen iPod shuffle. Apple's moved on from both of these designs to newer and better things, but they're putting the patents in anyway, just in case anyone wants to rip off the rounded iPhone edges or the little shuffle's clip design.

The rumored Hulu Plus has landed with the Hulu website showing that a monthly subscription now costs $8 down from $10. The guide isn't for the faint of heart, but it's not completely unintelligible to someone with a bit of time and determination. If anything it serves as an excellent bit of how-the-Kinect-was-won history.

MacTech benchmarks Office 2011, finds big gains
MacTech Magazine has written up a thorough review of their benchmark tests of Microsoft Office 2011 versus its own predecessors on a variety of current Macs, including a head-to-head comparison of Entourage against its successor, Office 2011's Outlook. The results show significant speed gains all around, particularly in general app launching times, and in Excel and Powerpoint operation.

Zuckerberg says Apple needs to 'get on the bus' for social
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at the Web 2.0 Summit called for Apple to ease its approach to connecting Ping with Facebook. A 17-year-old American college student has found a way to obtain apparently-genuine white component parts for the iPhone 4 long in advance of the planned spring 2011 debut of the much-sought-after official white model, the New York Observer reports, and has created a kit people can buy to convert their black iPhone 4s into authentic-looking white models. Questions remain, however, about the sourcing of the parts, the use of trademarks and the legitimacy of the operation which may land the youngster in legal trouble and raise the ire of Apple.

Found Footage: Palm Top 3D Theater creates Pepper's Ghost on the iPhone
A sort of 3D may be coming to an iPhone or iPod touch near you through a new gadget using technology that was developed in 1842 called Pepper's Ghost. Jistsuro Mase, a Japanese artist has created i3DG which converts a 2D images into three layered images that are displayed on three planes using a snap on contraption containing three 45-degree mirrors. The images must be specially designed to be split into three parts, and i3DG then reconnects them for a near 3D effect that can be viewed without glasses. Palm CEO says its smartphone lead a wasted 'birthright'
Palm leader and now HP executive Jon Rubinstein today told those at the Web 2.0 Summit that his company should have led the smartphone market. The company was one of the very earliest in the category, having established PDAs with the Palm Pilot and getting into smartphones early with the Treo, but squandered its lead and let others catch up. He likened his position from 2007 to the situation Steve Jobs faced at Apple in 1996 and 1997, when the goal was primarily to fix years of mistakes.

Twitter for iOS gets push notifications, bug fixes, UI enhancements
There's an update to the official Twitter app for iOS. The new version 3.2 adds push notifications, so you can be pinged whenever someone mentions your Twitter handle, and also adds full support for iOS 4.2.
On the iPad, there are UI improvements that include panel animation and a dismiss feature. You can manage saved searches, and media can now be viewed inline.
The iPhone client provides additional Retina Display graphics, geotagging with just one tap, and improved display of shortened URLs.
Twitter for iOS remains free -- you can download it right now on the App Store.

Sling says SlingPlayer for iPad imminent, gives video demo
Sling has hinted that its long promised SlingPlayer for iPad was about to launch and provided a demo video (below) of the app. The streamer has higher quality video than any of Sling's other apps and makes use of the extra display real estate to provide a large channel guide and an on-screen number pad that still shows most of the picture underneath when up.
