Android 2.2 update starts rolling out to unlocked Dell Streaks, includes Stage UI
We've pretty much been waiting on the Dell Streak's Android 2.2 update for as long as the 5-inch tablet / phone has been on the market, and it looks like the time has finally come well, at least for owners of unlocked Streaks. Word is that Dell has started to push out its over-the-air Froyo update to unlocked Streaks; those that purchased devices locked to a carrier will see the update hit those 5-inch screens sometime in December. (Note: Streaksmart also reports that Dell will start selling an unlocked Streak in the US with Froyo preloaded in the next couple of weeks.) EyeTV Netstream Sat gives computer-free satellite TV to iPad
Elgato today brought out its first satellite TV option that doesn't require a computer to view. The EyeTV Netstream Sat pipes any freely viewable European satellite TV through to a local network and can play it back to an iPad or iPhone through the EyeTV app (free, App Store) as well as Macs and Windows PCs. It works over both Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi and can rely on USB to feed DVB-S2 terrestrial video.

Bump adds music-sharing upgrade
Bump is an older app on the App Store that allowed you to "share" contact information with another local phone not actually by Bluetooth, but by simply placing the two phones near the same location, and then sharing the information across a wireless network. Now, Bump is apparently adding a new trick to its arsenal. In version 2.2, out on the App Store now, you can actually "share" any of the songs in your iTunes library. Microsoft accounting shuffling resulted in higher sales for Windows division
Microsoft's Windows division has been on something of a roll recently, but a deeper look into the company's financials seems to indicate that the reported numbers might look better than reality. Information Week has done some deep digging into Microsoft's recent SEC filings and found that several bookkeeping changes resulted in significantly increased reportings of profits in the company's Windows division. Apple to offer youth workshops at select stores
Apple will host holiday-themed workshops for kids ages six to 13-years-old this month. Topics will include photos, videos and presentations. That sounds just swell, but the bad news is that the workshops will take place at a very limited number of Apple Stores.
Only 12 stores are participating, including some in Colorado, Florida, Michigan and New York. You can find the full list here. The number of workshops also varies from store to store. For example, Colorado's Flatiron Crossing Apple Store has just one, 90-minute workshop listed, while New York City's Upper West Side store lists six over four days.

Briefly: Missing Sync adds USB syncing, Path comes to iOS
Mark/Space has released Missing Sync for Android 1.5. The software automatically syncs playlists from iTunes, amongst other content, whenever an Android device is near a computer. The update expands on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi options with full USB sync support for devices running Android 2.2 or higher. The update has also been optimized to improve file transfer speeds, and the performance of media file sync. The Missing Sync for Android costs $40.

Comcast-NBC terms may require allowing iTunes, Netflix deals
Comcast's proposed merger with NBC could require the combined entity to offer video to others online, according to sources speaking out Monday. The FCC's proposed rules for the telecom giant would prevent it from withholding content from any competitor, including Apple's iTunes, Netflix, Vudu or other digital services. Agency officials might also require a net neutrality rule that prevents it from interfering with traffic from these or any other legal service, the WSJ's insiders said.

You remember that ASUS Eee Tablet that was unveiled back at Computex in June, right? Holiday Mac numbers could hit 4.3 million
October sales figures obtained by the NPD Group suggest that Macs are up about 20 percent year-over-year, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Based on trends, Munster forecasts that during the whole of the holiday season, Apple will sell between 4.1 and 4.3 million Macs. The impact of the new MacBook Air remains to be seen, he observes, since it was only launched in late October; November is nevertheless predicted to produce higher Mac units as a result.

iTunes 10.1 holds references to iTunes Live Stream
Signs have emerged today from Apple's own software that the company's new iTunes feature may involve live streaming in some form despite claims to the contrary. A new discovery by Italian at Apple Lounge has found that iTunes 10.1 has added references in a .plist file to "iTunes Live Stream." iPad owner's usage increasing over time
Business Insider recently surveyed 500 iPad users about their habits with some interesting results. Among the most interesting is that nearly 80 percent of respondents (77.6) said they use their iPads more often now than they did when they first got them, suggesting that, after the novelty had worn off, customers continued to use their iPads. Even more so, in fact.
The study also found that 71 percent of participants use their iPads between one and five hours per day. Additionally, 28.9 percent said that their iPad has become their primary computer. Personally, I use mine as a supplement, but my wife hasn't touched our MacBook Pro since

Sony Ericsson LiveView now available in Europe; if you had a LiveView, you'd know that already
Look, the future is in hyper-informed wrist accessories. If you don't know that by now, what do you know? Not that, assuredly. Sony Ericsson's Android-augmenting, Bluetooth-tethered LiveView accessory is now available in some European countries, including some fan faves like the UK, Germany, and France. Prices seem to vary from country to country, with a UK version going for £48.97 (about $79 US), France getting a €59 shot at it (about $80 US), and Germany swooping in with an über-low €42 tag (about $57 US). All three disparate prices seem a small amount to pay to place the future on your wrist / other clippable surface, but maybe that's just us.

Motorola targeting January to finalize split
Though Sanjay Jha is clearly the more visible of Motorola's two co-CEOs, it was his stealthier counterpart, Greg Brown, who mentioned during an analyst conference today that they're looking to wrap up the company's split in January of next year. Brown had already been tapped to head up Motorola Solutions -- one half of the post-split aftermath with $5.3 billion in cash and $2.9 billion in debt -- and he's saying that his company's independent identity "effectively starts today." If you were listening in on the Talkcast last night, you heard Steve relay a tale of woe from a client who rushed to update his server to the latest Snow Leopard build, 10.6.5, only to encounter a slew of Open Directory problems -- and with no backup to revert to safely. Coiner of 'net neutrality' sees Apple as primary threat
Apple is the next candidate for a new information monopoly, says Tim Wu, a Columbia law professor specializing in communications and copyright law. Wu is best known for inventing the term "network neutrality," used to refer to the principle that Internet service providers and other companies should treat all Internet traffic equally. FCC, Justice Department look to prevent Comcast from hogging NBC's online video all for itself

Analyst says Christmas may not be so green for the iPad
There is at least one Scrooge this holiday season, and it's Ashok Kumar of Rodman & Renshaw. While there had been estimates of 6 million iPad sales by the end of the year, Kumar has pulled back to an estimate of 5 million because the iPad, and other tablet PCs are just not "must have" purchases.

LG Quantum brings its QWERTY slider to AT&T

Apple's special iTunes unveiling on Tuesday isn't likely to involve new streaming music features, alleged insiders said today. HTC Trophy with Windows Phone 7 coming to Verizon in 'early 2011'

Galaxy Tab hits AT&T with premium over others and iPad
AT&T today became the last major US carrier to launch the Samsung Galaxy Tab (link active soon). The Android tablet will share the same seven-inch screen, 1GHz processor, dual cameras and built-in Flash support, although it will follow an iPad-style 3G activation model. Users can sign up for and start 3G service on the device itself and pay only for either 250MB or 2GB of data in a given month when needed.

Apple to release products in China more quickly
Apple has battled a thriving gray market in China over the last few years, and hopes that getting new products into customers' hands more quickly will help to address the problem.
You'll remember that the iPhone didn't hit the Chinese market until 2009, a full two years after the U.S. launch. In that time, a hugely disruptive gray market emerged and continues to operate.

Microsoft accused of padding Windows revenue figures
Microsoft this weekend was accused of inflating its Windows revenue figures. An SEC filing has shown that the company's record revenues could have boosted Windows revenue by as much as $259 million through diverting sales from the Entertainment and Devices group. Microsoft explained the measure to InformationWeek as part of the "organizational shakeup" from the exit of Robbie Bach that moved embedded devices and Office for Mac to different groups.

Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server update disappears
The Server version of the Mac OS X 10.6.5 update is now missing from Apple's download options, AppleInsider notes. The update is reportedly being plagued by a number of technical problems, which could be enough to warrant retooling. In one case, the update is said to have broken DNS and LDAP functions; in others, the code is accused of causing random drops in client and external storage connections.

iAd will launch in Europe this week
Shortly after the Japan iAd deal was sealed, Apple is rumored to be ready to launch iAd in Europe this week. The Financial Times reports that a number of very big brands are already on board, and that Apple will make the announcement later this week. L'Oréal, Renault and Nestlé are reportedly among the early adopters.
Apple has twice delayed the European roll out of iAd, the Financial Times suggests, because agencies are balking at the US$1 million minimum meant to attract top names. White HTC EVO 4G leaves the Best Buy nest, migrates to Sprint stores
Once a Best Buy exclusive, the white version of HTC's still-badass EVO 4G is finally making its way into actual Sprint retail locations, the carrier's website, and other third party stores for the same $199 on contract after $100 mail-in rebate as usual. Apple verspricht iTunes Neuerungen für morgen!
Auf der amerikanischen Website von Apple findet man seit wenigen Stunden eine in der Art noch nie gesehene Ankündigung von Apple, dass morgen genau um 16 Uhr MEZ Neuigkeiten zu iTunes verkünden wird. Die Neuigkeiten sind offenbar ziemlich bahnbrechend, denn Apple trägt dicke Worte auf:

Comcast started off the week by launching Xfinity TV (free, App Store) for the iPad and iPhone. The app currently serves as a remote control and lets users steer live TV, on demand videos and the DVR to either change stations or schedule recordings for later. Apple claims $500M supply deal, $4B in capex plans
Apple has signed a $500 million supply agreement, and is planning on making $4 billion in capital expenditures, says UBS analyst Maynard Um. The information comes from a talk with Apple management, although executives didn't elaborate on a partner or partners in the supply deal, or what the bulk of expenditures will consist of. Um suggests, however, that two of the largest pieces in the puzzle include expanded supply capacity, and the company's new North Carolina data center, the purpose of which could be revealed tomorrow.

The Xfinity remote app Comcast CEO Brian Roberts showed off earlier this year is now available in the app store for the iPad and iPhone. News: Apple adds Ping functionality to iPad
Apple has added the ability for iPad users to access their Ping accounts via the iTunes app. The Ping tab allows users to view their activity feed, followers, profile, and a separate section dedicated to concerts, including local shows, artists on tour, and links to purchase tickets through Ticketmaster.com. The current state of Mac use in higher education
Apple used to own the Higher Education market throughout the 80s and early 90s. Apple eventually took a back seat to the lower-priced Dell product line, but all of that is changing. According to a Group Logic Inc. survey of IT professionals at 125 North American colleges and universities, use of Macs on campuses has risen and will continue to rise. Motorola's 7-inch Motopad may be lead tablet for Android 3.0
Google may have hand-picked a seven-inch Motorola tablet as its flagship based on a terse leak from Russia. Mobile-Review, often known as a home for accurate pre-release leaks, claimed that a seven-inch device known as the Motopad would be a "first device" to show Android 3.0, or Honeycomb. Exemode bringt 3D-Taschencamcorder raus

Intel Sandy Bridge to ship with low-power Core i5, i7 models
Intel's Sandy Bridge notebook processors will include five low-power processors for ultraportables, a roadmap slip has uncovered today. The range would start with three low-voltage Core i7 chips, the 2610LM, 2620LM and 2640LM. Boxcar 4.0 vastly improves on iPhone notifications
While people who have used both iOS and Android devices will argue over which OS exhibits a greater degree of polish, Android definitely has the better notification system. Even the addition of multitasking to iOS 4 did little to improve the state of notifications on iOS devices compared to Android.
Boxcar, which just reached version 4 on the App Store, is a great improvement over standard iOS notifications. Microsofts Kinect erfreut sich immer größerer Beliebtheit und zwar nicht nur als psychedelische IR-Galaxie im Wohnzimmer, sondern auch in der Hackergemeinde: diesmal als 3D-Videotracker / Videomapper, der die Tiefeninformationen der Kamera auf das aktuelle Bild mappt. Facebook for iPhone updated with account and privacy settings access
Facebook has updated its popular iPhone app to version 3.3.2. The update includes bug fixes, but it also adds the long requested ability to access your account and privacy settings directly from the iPhone app without having to log into Facebook.com.
While you can now access account and privacy settings from within the app, the implementation of the account and privacy settings leaves something to be desired. Taping the Account button will bring up a menu that allows you to log out, go to the Facebook Help Center, or go to your privacy or account settings. Selecting account or privacy settings takes you to the Facebook website via the app's built-in browser. Not the best implementation, but at least it's accessible from within the app now.

Researchers develop 'blood camera' to spot crime scene stains in a flash
Could inspecting a crime scene for even the most minuscule blood stains one day be as simple as taking a picture? It will if some research now being conducted at the University of South Carolina in Columbia pans out. A team there led by Stephen Morgan and Michael Myrick have developed a so-called "blood camera" that uses a combination of infrared light and a transparent layer of the protein albumin -- the latter of which acts as a filter and is able to highlight blood stains by filtering out wavelengths that aren't characteristic of blood proteins (or so we're told). Toshiba's Android tablet sales stop in UK after major flaws
Toshiba's entry into Android tablets hit a major setback today as UK retailers have stopped sales of the Folio 100. A set of leaks of company memos from Dixons chain stores Currys and PC World have shown that both are freezing sales after a "high return rate" for multiple issues. Shops have pulled it off their websites and deliberately boosted the price to £999 ($1,613) to deter customers from asking about a sale.

Review: Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750
Logitech's K750 attempts to solve one the most basic frustrations with wireless keyboards: having to buy and charge batteries. Hack turns Kinect into 3D video capture tool
We all knew this would inevitably happen, but seeing it in action is something else -- the Kinect transformed by the power of open-source drivers into a true 3D video camera for capturing oneself. Zazzle to offer custom-art hard-shell cases
In partnership with hard-shell case maker Speck, the custom-art merchandise site Zazzle will be offering custom cases for the iPhone 4, 3GS and iPad starting Tuesday. The cases are fitted hard-shells with a fabric backing that features the custom photos, art and/or text designed by the user. The cases can be produced in as little as 24 hours, and templates in Adobe Illustrator, PNG and JPG formats are now available for download.

Indeed, they already have, with the iPad hosting not only its own integrated bookstore, but client software from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and others. Barnes & Noble, in turn, describes its new Nook Color as a "readers' tablet." But these devices and their affiliated digital bookstores are all chasing the same avid readers of bestsellers. These readers read mostly for leisure or self-directed enrichment as they can fit it in to their schedules.

Samsung i9100 is the dual-core Galaxy 2, sequel to the Galaxy S?
Along with a Sony Ericsson Anzu, the James Bond of cellphones -- alias Eldar Murtazin -- claims to be playing with a Samsung GT-i9100 right now, calling it the "Galaxy 2" and saying it's "so technically advanced" thanks in part to a dual-core processor. It seems like a long shot that this would be the Cortex-A9-based Orion since chips and development boards are just now being sampled -- but considering how far in advance Murtazin tends to score phones, we can't rule anything out.

HTC attempts to trademark 'HTC EVO Shift 4G'
What would you name your next superphone? HTC may be calling its device the HTC EVO Shift 4G, as that's the name its lawyers filed for trademark for on the 21st of last month. We can't say which particular gizmo the moniker refers to, though it evokes a Sprint leaning, as well as dredging up our suppressed feelings towards a certain QWERTY-equipped MID. Though, interestingly enough, the company applied for "HTC EVO 4G Shift" before changing the name to "HTC EVO Shift 4G." We'll let you draw your own conclusions about what that could possibly mean.
