Civilization V coming to OS X soon
Remember when Civilization IV came out, and Mac users had to wait nearly a year for the game to come to OS X? You'd be forgiven for thinking the same thing would happen with Civilization V, especially since there's been no official word from either Firaxis or 2K on when the turn-based strategy epic will make its way to the Mac. According to Mac Rumors, however, the wait for an OS X-compatible version of Civilization V may not be long at all -- they claim the Mac port may be coming sometime in the next few

Debunk: Leaked iPad photo doesn't show next gen design
By now you may have seen some photos of an alleged iPad casing doing the rounds that is purported to be the next generation of Apple's tablet. In the pics, you can clearly see that there are two distinct slots for the company's 30 pin dock connector, which would allow you to plant the iPad in either landscape or portrait mode. Unfortunately, this isn't a sign of things to come -- it's a future that never was. According to a trusted Engadget source, what the image actually shows is a rejected concept from the current generation iPad. The story goes that originally there had been plans to feature two dock connections, but close to the last minute a design decision was made to kill the landscape port.

Amazon App Store for Android confirmed by WSJ
Amazon's always worked hard to make sure it's in the digital goods business as well as its obviously successful physical one, but this might be one of its boldest steps yet: another app store for Android. We heard the rumor a couple weeks ago through TechCrunch, and The Wall Street Journal is now claiming to have proof, including an Amazon document explaining some of the terms to the developers. It's apparently still unclear when the store will be launched or even what it'll be called, and since so far it seems like Amazon is mainly talking to developers about this behind closed doors, some of the specifics might still be in the air. Report: Apple canceling iPhone 4 orders in Hong Kong
According to M.I.C Gadget, Apple is canceling online iPhone 4 orders in Hong Kong in an attempt to thwart would-be resellers.
Recently, customers have either had their existing orders canceled or been prevented from placing new orders. Many shoppers received this email from Apple:
"Dear Apple Online Store Customer,
Thank you for your recent Apple order.
To ensure that all customers are given the opportunity to acquire iPhone, we have limited the quantity available per customer. Our records indicate that you've exceeded this limit for iPhone orders, therefore this order has been cancelled.

New Energizer iPhone 4 battery case nearly doubles life
Energizer has just began shipping its AP1201 case for the iPhone 4, which doubles as a lithium polymer battery pack. It promises to nearly double the life of the Apple handset, and shows the external battery's status through LED lights on the back of the case. CherryPal outs $188, 7-inch Android tablet
CherryPal, the California-based maker of the $99 Linux netbook for Africa, has just announced the CherryPad America tablet. Its 7-inch, 800x480 touchscreen is matched by Android 2.1 and has access to the Android Market with enough visual performance for 3D gaming. Photos show alleged two-port iPad casing
An electronics repair company, Mission:Repair, claims to have to obtained evidence that a next-generation iPad will use not one but two dock connectors. Photos show an alleged back for the tablet, with a second 30-pin port located along one of the long edges. The addition appears to be intended to allow landscape docking, something impossible with the current iPad unless using a special dock or stand.

Microsoft talking to Adobe about teaming vs. Apple, merger?
Adobe and Microsoft have been talking about possibly collaborating against Apple or even a union between the two, sources said on Thursday. Their respective CEOs Shantanu Narayen and Steve Ballmer reportedly met for over an hour recently and discussed the possibility of teamwork to counter Apple's influence in the mobile world. Consultants and workers told the New York Times that they had gone so far as to float the option of Microsoft buying Adobe, although how serious this was isn't known.

Locality app does location based search with a few twists
There's no shortage of location-based search apps. One of my favorites is Around Me, but there are plenty of others. Smith Micro has come up with its own search app that has some nice additions, and misses a few things too.
The free app, called Locality, uses Google searching to find the nearest restaurants, pharmacies, hospitals, etc. It does that well, generating a list of places, or it can show them on a map. One nice feature is an 'Events' function, so you can see things that might be of special interest around you. Some things it found were local concerts, antique shows, and some commercial events like sales at local stores.

T-Mobile HTC Slide to provide non-FaceTime video chat with iPhone 4
FaceTime is one of the most visible features of the iPhone 4, with much of the advertising for the newest iPhone showing off the emotionally-rich video chat capabilities that FaceTime provides. But if your friends are on another network or don't have an iPhone 4, it's impossible to use your phone to video chat with them.
Yahoo! and T-Mobile would like to change that. T-Mo announced earlier in the week that an upcoming Android phone, the HTC Slide, will come with two cameras arrayed much in the same manner as those on the iPhone. Predictions for Q4 iPhone sales vary wildly
Analyst estimates are ranging widely on how many iPhones Apple sold during the last quarter, Fortune writes. Tavis McCourt of Morgan Keegan represents the conservative end of the spectrum, calling for only 10 million units. Cywee preps wireless video transmitters for Apple, Android
At CTIA today, relative newcomer Cywee has been showing a previously unknown RF wireless video adapter for Apple devices. The as yet unnamed combo sends video at up to 480p widescreen from any iPad, iPhone or iPod with video output through a Dock Connector transmitter to a 5.8GHz receiver that plugs into analog output on the TV. The choice of format produces little lag and could be quick enough for games if the device allows.

Apple afraid of a shattering followup to its Antennagate woes?
Apple weathered that Antennagate storm surprisingly well, but now there's another potential cloudburst on the horizon, and it's been pre-named for your convenience: "Glassgate." Proposed Apple patent would toggle touch on displays
A recent Apple patent application, newly published by the US Patent and Trademark Office, could allow screens to more readily toggle between touch and simple display modes. Titled Integrated Touch Sensitive Display Gate Driver, the filing depicts a particular circuit design that might offer several advantages for devices. GDC Online 2010: Hands-on and preview of WINtA
WINtA is probably the best brand new game that I've seen so far at GDC Online 2010 (this week in Austin, Texas). It's a title published by a group called OneBigGame, which is a nonprofit video game publisher. They commission and publish games, which are created for free by luminaries in the video game field, and then they sell them to customers for money that goes straight to charities around the world. LG Optimus T hands-on
The low-end LG Optimus S that wowed us earlier the other day has a magenta twin -- the LG Optimus T, headed to T-Mobile with very similar hardware. Considering that both carriers' phones will come in purple and black, you could easily be excused for confusing the two -- aside from a prominent logo and the physical button arrangement, they've got the exact same build. That's not a bad thing, mind you, as it means the Optimus T is similarly solid as a rock, but there are a few differences here and there, like the lack of dedicated camera and voice buttons this time

Intel: MeeGo won't reach shipping phones until 2011
Intel set back Nokia's competitiveness in mobile on Thursday with an update that MeeGo won't reach a shipping phone until 2011. Software VP Doug Fisher claimed to Forbes that the mobile OS was on track but noted that MeeGo would only get real phone call and touchscreen support with 1.1, a pre-release update due later this month. Most of the devices shipping in 2010 will be non-touch devices like netbooks and in-car computers with the exception of the German-made WeTab slate, which suffered a hit after the company's chief was caught faking reviews.

Estimates vary on number of iPads sold
In the professional guesswork that is estimating Apple's sales numbers, numbers are varying wildly about just how many iPads Apple has sold.
According to Philip Elmer-DeWitt, the general consensus is that Apple has sold about 8.25 million iPads. He's gathered quarterly estimates from many sources and compiled a list. They range from 3.80 million iPads sold (issued on September 28th by Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co.) to 6.0 million (issued on October 1st by Robert Paul Leitao of Apple Finance Board).
As Philip points out, Apple sold 3.27 million iPads in the third quarter. Apple will hold its 4th quarter financial earnings conference call on October 18th, and TUAW will be live-blogging the event. Check back then to get the

TomTom bringt Navigationsgeräte mit HD Traffic 4.0 in den Handel

Seven-inch iPad to have Retina Display, 128GB of memory?
Apple is not only working on a 7-inch iPad, but one that should have a camera, Retina Display and up to 128GB of storage, according to Taiwanese component suppliers contacted by Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities. HTC's MobileMe-like service live as Desire HD shows in US
HTC today switched on HTCSense.com, its online service for its smartphone owners. The service closely follows the path set by Apple's MobileMe, as embers can locate their phone and remotely wipe it if they suspect it's been stolen or permanently lost. Analyst: Sharp rise in iPad sales estimates
Yet again, more analyst news regarding the iPad impacting laptop and netbook sales. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that estimated sales of the iPad for 2010 have more than doubled to 11 or 12 million units sold this year, with 20 million iPads expected to be sold in 2011 -- which is still conservative according to some other analysts.

More Verizon iPhone: no dual-mode, V Cast an early barrier
More details have surfaced today regarding Verizon's iPhone plans in a new leak [sub. required] that explain its network support and Verizon's reasons for turning down Apple's plans. Expanding on its earlier mention of Qualcomm supplying chips, the WSJ said the model would only support CDMA and EVDO rather than become a dual-mode device with GSM and HSPA as well. Apple had reportedly considered the option but turned it down for unknown reasons.

JP Morgan ups Apple Q4 revenue forecast to $18.71 billion
JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz has raised his estimates for Apple's most recent quarter, most notably pushing a revenue target up from $18.13 billion to $18.71 billion. The forecast also includes sales of 4.7 million iPads -- higher than some other optimistic appraisals -- and an adjusted gross margin prediction, now set at 39.5 percent instead of 39.2. Margins could return to 40 percent as soon as the next quarter, says Moskowitz, if component prices fall as expected and help compensate for educational discounts and the free case giveaways for the iPhone 4.

Mirror's Edge coming to the Mac later this year
A mobile version of the first-person platform game Mirror's Edge is already available for the iPad and iPhone, but the original version hasn't made it to the Mac yet. Apple Store restarts bumper case sales
Thanks to a couple of tips this morning, we note that iPhone 4 bumpers are once again available in the Apple Store online. The cases, which retail for US$29.99, were taken off the virtual shelves during the 'Antennagate' free case giveaway period, just expired.
Interestingly, Apple's product images for the bumpers all include a product that isn't on sale yet -- the legendary, much-anticipated white iPhone 4.

The Hitachi-LG Data Storage joint venture has itself fostered yet another mixed product, combining both an optical disk drive and flash storage into a single form factor. The 2nd generation of its Hybrid Drive uses Micron's 25nm NAND flash memory in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB capacities (with those figures to rise in later iterations, naturally) and can be united with either DVD or Blu-ray players -- perfect for laptops and other portable devices with just one drive to spare. Intel says no MeeGo phones until first half of 2011, Nokia just shrugs
While Nokia remains mum about the status of its first MeeGo handset, Doug Fisher, Vice President of Intel's Software and Solutions Group and General Manager of Systems Software Division, is being decidedly more talkative. According to an interview published by Forbes, MeeGo phones and tablets are in the works but we'll have to wait until 2011 to handle them. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang argues case for ësuperphonesí
In a press conference for the Tawainese media, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang argued that there is room for so-called large screen superphones like the Tegra 2 powered Motorola Droid X that will sit between the 3.5-inch displays on the iPhone and 7-inch tablets. Perhaps our eyes are just too untrained for such tasks, but we didn't much miss the 24ppi or so difference between the iPhone 4's retina display (326 ppi) and Hitachi's 6.6-inch IPS panel (302 ppi). The CEATEC prototype panel is just gorgeous and crystal clear (as much as Shakespeare and Kanji-laden articles can be, at least). Smartphone-Marktanteile: Enges Rennen zwischen BlackBerry, Android und iOS
Eine aktuelle Nielsen-Studie hat die Entwicklung des Smartphone-Marktes in den Vereinigten Staaten zwischen Januar und August 2010 untersucht. Apple, Google und RIM beherrschen zusammen mehr als drei Viertel des Marktes. Im August nannten 31 Prozent aller Smartphone-Besitzer ein BlackBerry-Gerät von RIM ihr Eigen. Damit führt RIM die Statistik an, büsste seit Februar aber konstant Marktanteile ein. Grosser Aufsteiger ist das Android-Betriebssystem von Google. Der Anteil der sich im Umlauf befindenden Android-Smartphones nahm von acht Prozent im Januar auf 19 Prozent im August zu. Sehr konstant präsentiert sich der Marktanteil von Apples iOS, der stets bei rund 28 Prozent lag.
Die zunehmende Marktpräsenz von Android zeigt sich auch bei den Neukäufen. Insbesondere zu Beginn des Jahres nahm Googles Marktanteil bei Neugeräten massiv zu - unter anderem auf Kosten des iPhones. Sony creates record-smashing 16.4MP phone camera sensor
Sony tonight unveiled camera sensors that it says could overcome many of the traditional barriers for phone cameras. The 16.41-megapixel IMX081PQ is Sony's first Exmor R-based CMOS sensor for a phone and uses the back-illuminated sensor to cut back significantly on noise. A unique photo diode positioning has let Sony achieve high image quality even with photo cells as small as 1.13 micrometers.

Sharp IS03 ASV display vs. iPhone 4 IPS display... fight!
Two 3.5-inch displays at 960 x 640 resolution, both equipped with fancy wide viewing angle technologies. Does the Sharp IS03's ASV get the nod over the iPhone 4's famously good IPS? After peeping them side by side, we're not sure any mere mortal could call it -- both look bright and ridiculously crisp from every conceivable vantage point and have roughly the same amount of gloss, though the IS03 has the advantage of a second always-on monochrome LCD strip. Regardless, we're just happy to see that we've got at least two suppliers of excellent 960 x 640 mobile displays in the industry now -- let's just hope they can keep up with demand.

HTC meldet 123 Prozent Umsatzplus im dritten Quartal
HTC hat eine vorläufige Bilanz (PDF) des dritten Quartals 2010 vorgelegt. Zwischen Juli und September setzte der taiwanische Handyhersteller 75,85 Milliarden Taiwan-Dollar (1,76 Milliarden Euro) um. Uh, wow, guess the megapixel race isn't over. Sony just announced the world's first 16.41 megapixel CMOS sensor for mobile phones putting today's 12 megapixel units to shame. The 1/2.8-inch back-illuminated Exmor R model IMX081PQ sensor packs an industry smallest 1.12μm unit cell size and is capable of shooting 1080p at 30fps or 720p at 60fps. Sony claims to have solved some of the issues related to those incredibly small pixel sizes by implementing a unique formation of photo diodes to achieve a sensor with high resolution, high sensitivity, and low noise. Sharper Image Literati e-reader gets a 'don't even bother' review
Well, this isn't good. We didn't have the highest of hopes for the Sharper Image's Literati e-reader, a $159 7-incher announced back in August. Well, it's just gotten a review and it sounds much, much worse than we expected. In fact, the reviewer failed to find one decent attribute of the reader, but does detail its slowness, its unstable and buggy UI, and poor formatting. The Kobo-driven reader has absolutely no annotating options, not even bookmarks, rendering its full keyboard totally useless. The whole thing sounds like a serious mess to us. HTML5 not ready for prime time, says W3C
The World Wide Web Consortium, the body that regulates and publishes the specifications of the HTML standard, is warning web content producers that the HTML5 is "not yet ready for production" and that the W3C will likely make further significant changes to the specification to increase interoperability. Philippe Le Hegaret, interaction domain leader responsible for the HTML and SVG spec, added that they expect it to be feature-complete in mid-2011.

GM announces $490 Voltec home charger for Chevy Volt: $2,000 installed
We've already seen a number of Volt-compatible home EV chargers announced, but it doesn't look like GM is about to pass up on the market itself -- it's just announced its own 240V "Voltec" home charger. A helpful tipster hit us up with this little photo today: a Windows Phone 7 mockup styled of Lego bricks. Rogers, Ericsson turn Ottawa into an LTE trial playground
Rogers is breaking LTE out of the confines of its labs for the first time with the announcement today that it's flipping the switch on a trial network in Ottawa -- a place where infrastructure partner Ericsson conveniently just happens to have some facilities. Apple pays $16.5m to settle backdating lawsuit
Apple today settled a class-action lawsuit with the New York City Employeesí Retirement System over claims of questionably backdated stock options. The deal will redistribute $14 million back to shareholders and $2.5 million in funding for corporate governance education at Columbia Law School and Stanford Law School. It will also include some internal reforms to prevent a repeat of the issue.

Tweet Library for iPad makes Twitter useful
I've long been fascinated by the idea of using Twitter as both a social platform and a means of archiving my life on the web. I've played with using favorites, searches, backup services, my own bots for archiving links and direct messages I know it goes against the grain of the original vision of Twitter, but it's grown to be something that really has the potential to be more than a flighty (excuse the pun) social network. Microsoft creating its own software layer for Windows 7 tablets? Boy, we hope so
It's no secret that Microsoft has a slight tablet, err Slate PC problem on its hands: Windows 7 certainly works on a "pad," but the user interface isn't meant for strictly finger input. The makeshift solution has been, of course, for its partners to create software skins of their own -- see HP TouchSmart UI, the ExoPC "Connect Four" skin, etc. -- but according to Microsoft know-it-all Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet, the guys in Redmond may just be working on a layer of their own. Ejected FarFinder app returns as "FarSomething"

The low-end Android game just got real, folks, with Sprint's introduction of the LG Optimus S, a $50 (on-contract, post-rebate) Android slatephone running Froyo on a 3.2-inch HVGA screen, with mobile hotspot functionality for up to five devices, 802.11 b/g WiFi and a 600MHz processor to run the whole shebang.
