Apple issues Magic Trackpad drivers for OS X and Windows, updates MacBooks with new gesture support
Right on schedule, Apple's released new drivers for the Magic Trackpad, in both OS X and Windows flavors. The download is pretty amusingly huge at 75MB, since it includes videos of all the gestures in action, but at least you'll know exactly how many fingers to use for that new three-finger drag gesture. The bad news? It requires OS X 10.6.4, so you're out of luck if you're still running Leopard and itching to get your swipe on with Apple's latest peripheral.
The new software also updates the MacBook and MacBook Pro multitouch trackpads with inertial scrolling and three-finger drag, which is pretty nice -- we've got it installed on a unibody MBP and it's working as

Nikon seen launching D3100, new lenses by August 19
Nikon's entry-level D3100 DSLR should arrive by August 19, leaked info suggested today. Following a previous leak, it's now believed the camera will be unveiled at or near midnight Eastern time on August 19. Four lenses would accompany it if Nikon Rumors is true.

Software Update: Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0
Filed under: Software UpdateApple released the Magic Trackpad this morning, but the OS update to make it work with your Mac is out now, available via Software Update on your Mac (drop down the Apple menu on the left if you've never done this before). Here's the link for a download of the update.

Augen's $99 GenBook smartbook preview
That's right, not only does Augen -- a company unbeknown to us before yesterday -- make an $150 Android 2.1 tablet, but the company is also stocking Kmart shelves with a $99 Android smartbook of sorts. Apple releases Magic Trackpad support drivers
Apple has released several drivers that bring support for the company's new Magic Trackpad. Mac and Windows users will be able to take advantage of the standalone trackpad, which supports the entire range of MacBook gestures such as two-finger scrolling and three-finger swiping.

RIM, AT&T tease special BlackBerry event for August 3
RIM this afternoon sent an invite to Electronista and others to attend a special "BlackBerry event" in New York City. The company provided few details but said it would involve both itself and AT&T. Most expect the gathering to focus on the BlackBerry 9800 touchscreen slider and its use of BlackBerry OS 6, though the Curve 9300 may also show.

Kensington intros Laptop Locking Station
Accessory maker Kensington has released the Laptop Locking Station, a new anti-theft product. To secure a notebook, users must simply put an open computer in place and squeeze the lock's arm shut. To release, a key is turned in a side slot. The station uses a steel backbone and deflector plates to fight cutting or prying.

Intel's 50Gbps Silicon Photonics Link shines a light on future computers (video)
Using copper cables to transfer data around a computer? Get your head out of the sand, Grandpa! Intel thinks that's on the outs and is touting its recent accomplishments with Silicon Photonics and integrated lasers, using light pulses to move data at 50Gbps (last time we hear Intel tout the tech was 40Gbps in 2007). Nissan Leaf gets early review: you might just forget its an eccentric electric car
It still won't be widely available until 2012, but Nissan's Leaf is already leaking out to a few select media outlets. Our comrades over at Autoblog managed to get behind the wheel of the all-electric whip down in San Jose, and while they didn't find anything that changed the admittedly developing game, what they did find was a solid, refined EV that's "ready for primetime." PopCap Games recently released an update to Plants vs. Zombies boasting "multiple performance enhances and bug fixes" (sure, but I never had an issue on my 3GS). Now, the King of Pop Zombie is nowhere to be found! He's replaced with a zombie with an orange Afro, white 70s leisure suit and orange shoes.

Dell Streak to cost less than 3G iPad; Aero due August 9
Dell today finally detailed its American launch plan for its Streak tablet. The device will be available for sale tomorrow but will be less expensive than the 3G-capable iPad when it goes on sale. An unlocked version free to use any GSM carrier will cost $549; a version locked to AT&T with a two-year contract will sell for $299.

TextPlus goes beyond free texting, boosts communities

Ortelius 1.1 improves Library Manager, workflow options
Mapdiva has released an upgrade of its map design software, Ortelius 1.1. The vector-based app serves a variety of uses, such as creating map graphics and designing land maps, floor plans, landscape plans and scaled drawings. It incorporates royalty-free maps of the world, and has a collection of drawing tools. Other features include WYSIWYG map labeling, calibrated color support and layer management. Amongst compatible file formats are JPEG, BMP, PNG, TIFF, PDF and ERSI.

Intel develops first photonics-based, 50Gbps chip
Intel provided a peek at the future of processors today by revealing the first instance of a chip using complete photonics to send data. Four lasers in the prototype convert light into data at about 50Gbps, or "many" times faster than wired connections. The rate, about 6.25GB per second, would be enough to send an entire 720p movie in one second.

Tactile display allows you to "feel" both light and shadow
The concept of touching things such as light or smells isn't anything new, but there's so much room for interpretation that it's always interesting to see new applications. At Siggraph 2010, a new tactile display is being shown off which allows the user to fell light and shadow. Called Touch Light Through the Leaves, the device consists of a camera which detects light, and 85 vibration units, which have motors, process the light and shadow information into sensations. A public beta of Franklin 3D 1.1, a professional 3D game and simulation engine, has been released with support for REAL Studio. The software features more than 400 methods, including support for display control, model loading, and callbacks. The engine can utilize either OpenGL or DirectX for rendering, allowing developers to tune projects for both Mac OS X and Windows. Other features include character animation, 2D and 3D hardware acceleration and a full particle effects system. During the beta period people can buy a license for $149, a 50 percent discount.

SanDisk ships its smallest USB thumb drive, the diminutive Cruzer Blade
We suspect SanDisk would have run into some friction by proclaiming that its Cruzer Blade is the world's smallest USB flash drive, but it smartly chose to word things as its smallest in order to not draw attention from those other guys. Apple doesn't expect Magic Trackpad to replace mice yet
Apple in remarks today said it didn't see the Magic Trackpad replacing mice in the near future. A spokesperson asserted that Apple wanted to provide a "choice" and that the new peripheral was a supplement, not necessarily a replacement. Some features are better for a traditional mouse where others can use a trackpad, the company said.

Wir sind keine Braille-Experten, aber soviel scheint klar: Das Armbanduhr-Konzept Oosh des Designers WinG Li ist wirklich chic, aber es dürfte ein Schmutzproblem bekommen, wenn es denn jemals realisiert wird. An unsereiner Arm würden die Löcher jedenfalls umgehend eingeschmuddelt und ob die Anzeige dann noch funktioniert, steht in den Sternen. Zudem scheinen statt Braille- eher Taktil-Armbanduhren üblich zu sein und das dürfte Gründe haben.

Monsoon outs Vulkano DVR/media streamers
Monsoon has followed up its HAVA series of placeshifting media streaming devices with the Vulkano. The two new products, the Vulkano and Vulkano Pro, have an integrated video processor and built-in storage. They both have analog inputs to record images and can perform live streaming to PCs, Macs, iPhones and iPads, as well as BlackBerry and Android smartphones. Chevy Volt officially priced at $41,000, $350/month on a three-year lease
It may not exactly be a huge surprise at this point, but GM has finally revealed that the official base price for its Chevrolet Volt will be $41,000 (including a $720 destination charge). That price is before the $7,500 federal tax credit, however, which will bring your eventual end cost down to a slightly more reasonable $33,500. Found Footage: Four generations of iPhone compared
Filed under: iPhoneHere's a fun video of four generations of the iPhone -- original, 3G, 3GS, and 4 -- performing the same tasks simultaneously. From launching intensive apps like Plants vs. Zombies and Google Earth to shutting down and booting up, the differences in task durations are often significant.
As you'd expect, the iPhone 4 out-performed its peers on most tasks. For example, it had Plants vs. Zombies ready to play in 8.5 seconds, while the original iPhone took 26 seconds to reach the same point. Likewise, the iPhone 4 had Google Earth ready to go in 21.4 seconds while the original took just over 37 seconds.

Fresh lawsuit claims iPad overheats in warm weather
A new lawsuit is accusing Apple of producing defective iPads, Bloomberg reports. Filed through US District Court for the Northern District of California in Oakland, the suit alleges that the iPad "does not live up to the reasonable consumerís expectations created by Apple," because it "overheats so quickly under common weather conditions." Under direct sunlight, the suit suggests, an iPad may shut off in as little as a few minutes.

ZumoCast gives remote video sharing to iPad, iPhone
ZumoDrive, the creators of a namesake remote storage iOS app, today started taking signups for a public beta of ZumoCast. First, Apple is pushing its green aspects. For example, the charger is smart enough to pull less power once the batteries are fully charged. In fact, Apple claims that it has the lowest standby power usage than any similar charger on the market (more on that in a minute). So it's real, and it's a trackpad. What seemed like pure rumor and some good Photoshopping just a short while ago has magically (ha ha!) transformed into reality. If you're wondering what the Magic Trackpad is like to use -- get ready for a shock. It feels just like using a slightly larger version of a MacBook or MacBook Pro pad. And we mean exactly, right down to the multitouch gestures and whole-pad click. Yes, it clicks. There's also a new gesture, if you're keeping track -- a three-finger move that lets you drag windows around (very helpful), though you give up the functionality of being to navigate stuff like iPhoto galleries with a swipe. Not a huge loss, really. We're going to be doing some serious testing with the new peripheral, but for now, feast your eyes on the pics below.

Apple today launched its first update to the Mac Pro in a year and a half with a speed boost as well as a new display. The new pro workstation uses as much as two six-core, 2.93GHz Xeon 5600 chips for a total of 12 cores, or 50 percent more than the outgoing top-end model. US-Behörde: iPhone-Jailbreak und -Unlock sind legal
Das US Copyright Office hat entschieden, dass ein Entsperren des iPhone für die Installation beliebiger Software ("Jailbreak") legal ist. Die Entscheidung fiel im Rahmen eines alle drei Jahre üblichen Revisionsprozesses des Digital Millennium Copyright Act auf Antrag der Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). Zudem ist es Nutzern erlaubt, einen sogenannten Unlock zur Aufhebung der Providersperre (SIM-Lock) durchzuführen. Gleichzeitig befand die Behörde auch das Umgehen des Kopierschutzes von DVDs unter bestimmten Bedingungen für rechtmäßig.

Apple: neue iMacs, Mac Pros, 27-Zoll-Cinema-Display & neues «Multi-Touch Magic Trackpad»
Apple hat soeben die iMac-Produktelinie aktualisiert: mit neuen Intel Core i3, Core i5 und Core i7 Prozessoren und neuer Grafikleistung.
Gleichzeitig führt Apple auch ein neues, «Multi-Touch Magic Trackpad» ein. Dieses Device wurde in den letzten Monaten einige Male in der Gerüchteküche behandelt, tauchte es im Frühling erstmals in Asiatischen Produktionsstätten auf.
Auch das LED-Cinema-Display gibt es «in Kürze» in einer neuen Ausführung: mit 27-Zoll Bildschirmdiagonale.
Neben iMac, Cinema-Display und dem neuen «Multi-Touch Magic Trackpad» wird es «im August» auch neue Mac-Pro-Modelle mit 6, 8 oder 12 CPU-Cores geben.

Einer unserer Lieblings-Spielzeug-Synths hat ein kleines Update verpasst bekommen: Der Thingamagoop2 kommt in der RGB-Edition mit Plexiglas-Gehäuse und LED-Lichtorgel und kostet dann auch gleich 189 statt 159 Euro. Auf den ersten Blick scheint das Update ziemlicher Käse, vor allem wenn man das schlichte Bot-Design des Originals mag. The fabled cloak of invincibility was once considered impossible for modern science, chilling out with perpetual motion up in the clouds, but these days scientists are tilting at blurry windmills with a modicum of success several times a year. ARM beats revenue forecasts, swims in piles of gold coins
Mobile chip wunder-company and recent Microsoft BFF ARM Holdings has released its financial results for the second quarter, and the news is good. Real good. Revenues are up about 50 percent compared to the same period a year before and profits jumped a whopping 167 percent. Apple Online Store down…
Momentan sind sämtliche Apple Online Stores nicht mehr erreichbar. Gerüchten zufolge könnten heute aktualisierte Mac Pros, iMacs und ein neuer LED Cinema Display mit 27-Zoll-Bildschirmdiagonale erscheinen. Auch heftig spekuliert wird das Erscheinen eines neuen «Magic Trackpads». Vielleicht schaltet Apple aber auch ‘nur’ die Vorbestellmöglichkeiten für das iPhone 4 auf. Dieses ist ab Freitag in 17 weiteren Ländern verfügbar — unter anderem in der Schweiz, Italien und Österreich.

Android-Tablet der Kölner Firma Interpad vielversprechend in den Startlöchern

Die Kölner Firma Interpad hat ein gleichnamiges Tablet im Köcher, dessen Specs erstmal recht vielversprechend klingen: Nvidia Tegra 2 T20 Dual ARM Cortex-A9 mit 1 GHz, kapazitiver 10-Zoll-Multitouchscreen, 1 GB RAM, 16 GB Speicher, USB, HDMI und MicroSD-Slot, zudem soll das Interpad unter Android laufen. Dem Vernehmen nach soll eine solchermaßen ausgestattete Version "im Herbst" für rund 400 Euro auf den Markt kommen, eine weitere mit 3G-Anbindung, Kamera und GPS soll für rund 500 im Dezember folgen. Wir sind gespannt, wie sich das Teil auf der IFA machen wird und bleiben bis dahin skeptisch optimistisch.

Yahoo Japan will lieber mit Google suchen
Google ist nach Informationen aus mehreren Quellen dabei, ein Suchabkommen mit Yahoo in Japan abzuschließen. Das Abkommen sei Teil eines größeren Vertrags, bei dem es auch um andere Produkte - zum Beispiel im Mobilbereich - geht. Niederlage für Apple: Das US Copyright Office hält sogenannte Jailbreaks für das iPhone für rechtmäßig. 23 Kilometer: Laufbot Ranger stellt Rekord im Roboter-Dauerlauf auf

Vor zwei Jahren war der Laufbot Ranger von der Cornell University schon einmal Champion seiner Klasse, aber damals genügte dafür noch ein Verdauungsspaziergang von rund 2 Kilometern. Jetzt hat sich Ranger die Krone wiedergeholt, die zwischenzeitlich an BigDog von Boston Dynamics gegangen war, und zwar mit einer soliden Wanderung über 23 Kilometer. Für die Strecke benötigte der ferngelenkte Bot 11 Stunden, in denen er 65.185 Schritte tat, aber vor allem legte Ranger die gesamte Distanz ohne Pause mit einer Akku-Ladung zurück.

Khronos Group veröffentlicht OpenGL 4.1
Die Khronos Group hat im Rahmen der Siggraph-Konferenz die neue Version 4.1 seiner Grafik-Programmierschnittstelle (API) OpenGL veröffentlicht. Das Update stellt unter anderem volle Kompatibilität zur Mobil-API OpenGL ES 2.0 her und spart beim Rekompilieren Zeit durch die Möglichkeit, Shaderprogrammobjekten in binärer Form zu suchen und zu laden.
Außerdem verspricht die Gruppe für OpenGL 4.1 durch 64-Bit

US-Behörde entscheidet: iPhone-Jailbreak ist legal
Das US Copyright Office hat entschieden, dass ein Entsperren des iPhone für die Installation beliebiger Software ("Jailbreak") legal ist. Die Entscheidung fiel im Rahmen eines alle drei Jahre üblichen Revisionsprozesses des Digital Millennium Copyright Act auf Antrag der Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). Robotern Dinge beizubringen ist schrecklich anstregend, schließlich muss man die einfachsten Dinge in komplizierten Formeln ausdrücken, damit der Blechkamerad auch mitkommt. Jedenfalls bisher. Italienische Wissenschaftler führen im Video nach dem Break vor, dass es auch viel einfacher geht: Einmal an die Hand genommen, geführt und geschubst, schon hat dieser Roboterarm gelernt, wie man Pfannkuchen wendet. So what if Rambus doesn't really produce anything tangible these days? iPhone 4 for Canada gets unlocked price: freedom is far from free
Sure, we in the US are pretty much stuck with AT&T when it comes to iPhone 4 indulgence, but Canada gets to pick -- for a price. We knew the of the option up north but not how much, and according to CBC News, that'll be $659 for 16GB, $779 for 32GB, and $549 for the 8GB iPhone 3GS. All Canadian dollars, of course -- the US conversion would be about $637 / $753 / $530, respectively. Carriers are still offering it up for a discount on contract, and to be perfectly honest, we think that's probably the route most people will take anyway. All the same, gotta love having a choice.

Apple: jailbreaking iPhone is legal but still voids warranty
Apple tonight made clear its stance on the Library of Congress' decision to legally sanction jailbreaking under the DMCA. The company didn't contest the legality itself but said it would still break the warranty by going beyond what Apple can support. Citibank says iPhone app has security flaw

MyTown adds product check-ins

Instead of just checking in to locations, the app will now "check-in" to various products with the iPhone's camera. Survey: 73% of iPhone users are fine with AT&T's service

A new survey released by Yankee Group says that 73% of iPhone users polled are actually "very satisfied" with their cell phone service. Android's UK market share quadrupled in spring
Android's footprint in the UK grew over four times larger in the spring, analysts at GfK found today. Google's smartphone platform surged from just three percent in the UK during the winter to 13.2 percent by the end of June. The company didn't publicly release other OS data but suggested that it meant shoppers were now deliberately seeking out Android, not just the phones.

Verizon issue sparks AT&T wireless outage in Manhattan
A Verizon digital cross connect box that directs network traffic has been damaged due to recent thunderstorms in Manhattan, cutting local landline service and affecting AT&T's cellular network. A report says Verizon maintains only a limited part of Manhattan is affected, ranging from the 20 series treats to the 40s between 5th Avenue and the east side of the borough. The area of the AT&T outage is even smaller.

Time and journal your meditations with Equanimity
Filed under: iPhoneRecently I was searching the App Store for meditation timers. It's quite distracting to glance at a clock while you're meditating, and conversely quite freeing to know that a chime will sound when you're done, so you can just concentrate and get to it.
Of course, it's simple to use the iPhone's clock app to set a timer, and I was content with that for a long time. Then I came across Equanimity and have abandoned the clock. With great features like a journal, preparation and cool-down modes and a progress tracker, Equanimity has become a part of my daily routine.
First of all, it avoids images of lotus flowers, sunsets and Buddha statues. While nice, I find them less-than-useful in this situation

Group completes Qi wireless charging standard for devices
The Wireless Power Consortium in a low-key move has approved the Qi standard for charging devices over the air. Hardware producers can now design devices to use the technology and expect them to work with other Qi equipment. Those in the alliance didn't say when they expected the first devices to reach shops.
