webOS 2.0 coming 'later this year,' says HP's Rubinstein
HP's Jon Rubinstein -- formerly of Palm CEO fame, of course -- just mentioned in an interview with Fortune that webOS 2.0 is on track for "later this year." Considering that 2010 is more than half over, that doesn't leave a whole heck of a lot of time -- but with a mix of presumed kick-ass HP hardware in the pipeline running webOS, we imagine this should all dovetail nicely. On a related note, Rubinstein again drove home the point that they're developing new hardware "aggressively," so let's hope we finally see a Pre 2, a Palmpad, or heck, a frickin' LifeDrive 2 in

Microsoft reports $4.5b in profit, a record $16.04b in revenue
This time last year, almost to the day, Microsoft saw its first annual sales decline in history. Things are looking much better now, with the company reporting a record $16.04 billion in revenue, a 22 percent year-over-year increase for its Q4 revenue ending June 30th. In fact, revenue is up across all divisions, with Windows and Windows Live seeing the biggest uptick (43.5 percent to $4.55 billion) followed by Entertainment and Devices (27.3 percent to $1.6 billion). Operating income, on the other hand, paints a different picture of E&D, showing a $172 million loss for this quarter (compared to $141 loss in Q4 l

Microsoft's record results just $300 million ahead of Apple
Microsoft this evening reported a best-ever spring quarter revenue that was undermined by its proximity to Apple's. The Windows developer made $16.04 billion in revenue but was just $300 million ahead of Apple's $15.7 billion during the same period. The gap in net profit was wider but still relatively close, at $4.52 billion for Microsoft versus $3.51 billion for the Mac maker.

AmpliTube for iPad available, Yngwie Malmsteen en route to Apple Store
Just a quick note for all of you virtual amping enthusiasts: IK Multimedia has announced that the AmpliTube is now available for iPad. As you'd expect, it works with your iRig hardware and the UI seems benefit from the extra screen real estate (let's be honest -- twiddling all those knobs and stomp boxes on the iPod Touch was a little bit much for us to take). It comes in two flavors: free (three effects, one amp, one cab, two mics) or $20 (11 effects, five amps and cabs, two mics). Either way it's cheaper than spending $350 for the OS X version. Briefly: GameAgent expands to Europe, iWebTemplate bundles
Aspyr has expanded its GameAgent digital download store to residents of the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. The move marks the first time that Aspyr's catalog of Mac titles have been available outside of North America. Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction due by Sept.
Two high-profile Ubisoft games -- Assassin's Creed 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction -- will finally appear on the Mac by September, details of the company's next fiscal quarter show. AC2, unusually, is listed as an EMEA release, referring to Europe, the Middle East and Africa; North America is not (yet) included in plans. Samsung Galaxy S review shootout: Captivate for AT&T and Vibrant for T-Mobile
We've got to hand it to Samsung with its Galaxy S line. Coordinating the launch of a single family of devices across all four national US carriers (plus a regional or two) is a feat very rarely accomplished, and usually reserved for really unique handsets that those carriers wouldn't be able to effectively source from anyone else; HTC's Touch Pro2 is a prime example of that. Apple seen near iMacs with Core i3, dual i5 models
Apple is in the first stages of ramping down its existing iMac supplies ahead of new models that should switch over completely to Intel's Core iX line, insiders said Thursday. Resellers have reportedly been told not to expect more shipments of the 21-inch Core 2 Duo iMac, others are being asked to sell all their existing models rather than ask for more. News: Apple begins refunding iPhone 4 Bumper purchases
Apple has started issuing refunds to iPhone 4 users who purchased Bumper cases from the online Apple Store. Steve Ballmer feeling pressure at Microsoft for stagnating share price?
It's hard to say that a CEO whose company has grown from $23 billion in revenue to $54 billion during his 10 year tenure isn't doing his job, but The Daily Beast is reporting on a small, vocal (and of course, anonymous) minority within Microsoft that wants Steve Ballmer out on the curb. The main criticism seems to be the share price, which has oddly tracked in inverse with Microsoft's revenue: it's about half of its $48.93 value back in January 2000 when Ballmer took over. With the strong support of his board and an another supposedly positive earnings call coming later today, it's hard to call Steve's position as "shaky" at the company, but with

Secunia ranks Apple first in software insecurity, Safari said to have AutoFill vulnerability
Bad news, Oracle. You've slipped to second place for the first time in years. The good news is that it's in Secunia's ranking of the top ten companies with the most software vulnerabilities, which is now topped by Apple -- Microsoft remains in third place, followed by HP and Adobe. According to Secunia, Apple's vulnerabilities are mostly not in OS X, but in Safari, iTunes and other applications. What's important to note, however, is that Secunia's definition of "vulnerability" doesn't simply include dangerous, exploitable vulnerabilities, so the rankings don't necessarily indicate which software is the most insecure from a user's point of view.

Safari exploit uses AutoFill to grab personal information
A very serious security vulnerability still exists in Safari, claims the CTO of WhiteHat Security. Jeremiah Grossman observes that on sites where Safari's AutoFill feature can be used, the browser will automatically populate certain fields with data from a computer's Address Book, whether a not person has ever been to the page. By creating a malicious site with the right fields, then simulating keystrokes using JavaScript, it should be possible to collect personal information without the victim's consent.

AT&T activation numbers show iPhone 4 dominance
Filed under: iPhoneI guess we can take potshots at AT&T all day, but the proof is in the pudding. Or activations, in this case: 3.2 million iPhone activations in Q2, which is 10 times the number for the 3GS the year before. Oblivious to the noise about AT&T's network, a full 27% of those activations are new customers for AT&T, which has to be chafing someone's drawers over at Verizon. FLO TV losing money, Qualcomm looking for an out?
So it seems that founding and operating a broadcast mobile TV business is no mean feat: as mocoNews points out, there is spectrum to be purchased and transmission towers to be networked -- all before you can sell electronics manufacturers on carrying your chipset in their devices. Unfortunately for Qualcomm, it looks like FLO TV has been something less than profitable, a reality that CEO Paul Jacobs owned up to in the company's Q3 conference call. Verizon: iPhone changed our mind on app stores
The iPhone was a "watershed" in how Verizon looked at mobile apps, business development executive director Jennifer Byrne said at the paidContent Mobile conference. While she claimed Verizon's GetItNow store was the first mobile app store, she saw Apple's store as the turning point for the industry. Verizon eventually learned to adopt a similar, hands-off approach to mobile apps and was rewarded when many of its Android phones took off in popularity.

Apple is putting more concerted effort into attracting small business sales, new retail job listings suggest. About a dozen US Apple Stores are currently hiring engineers, who will be assigned to implement computer systems for small companies. Safari exploit gives your contact info to malicious websites

In a report on security in the first half of 2010 Apple has claimed the top spot in the number of security vulnerabilities in their OS and software. According to a report from the security company Secunia, Apple is followed by Oracle and then Microsoft in the number of security flaws reported. It's worth noting that this report does not weigh the severity of these vulnerabilities, only the overall number of them.
Safari itself ranks slightly butter in the number of vulnerabilities found in 3rd party applications, taking the number two spot right after Mozilla's Firefox. It may not come as any surprise then tha

Im Dezember hat Apple die private UIGetScreenImage()-API zur Nutzung freigegeben, von der Anwendungen wie Ustream oder iCamcorder Gebrauch machen. Nokias operativer Gewinn bricht um 31 Prozent ein

Apple is looking to shrink or wipe out waiting lists for the iPad and iPhone 4, and soon, a source in the company says. Apple Stores regularly maintain "Priority Lists" that reserve devices for people in the order that requests were made. While these also serve the purpose of telling Apple how to manage production, some stores now allegedly have as many as 250 to 750 people on hold for iPads, and 500 to 1,500 waiting for iPhones, leaving many potentially unsatisfied customers.

Schnell zugreifen: Motorisierte Plansch-Oase

Zugegeben, bald wird es regnen, und die konstanten 30 Grad könnten auch bald vorbei sein, aber wer dennoch plant den Rest seines Sommers auf dem See zu verbringen, für den dürfte diese höchst niedliche Plansch-Oase mit Motor etwas sein. Das Ding kostet nämlich 450 Dollar und schafft dafür gerade mal 3KmH hat dafür aber nicht nur einen 4,8 Watt Verstärker für den iPod sondern auch noch Platz für Kühltasche, 6 Dosen und Besitzer derselben. 1 Stunde Dampf pro Ladung klingt allerdings doch etwas wenig.

AT&T announces 26 percent earnings growth for Q2, $4b profit
There may be plenty of tales of intrigue behind the scenes, but it looks like AT&T is still doing alright when it comes to raking in the cash -- it's just announced a 26 percent increase in earnings for the quarter that's just ended. In terms of hard numbers, that translates to a profit of $4.02 billion (up from $3.2 billion a year ago), and $30.8 billion in revenue, which is actually up just 0.6 over the previous year, although that modest gain is partly attributed to AT&T's sale of Sterling Commerce to IBM for $1.4 billion (which is not included in its results). OnStar Android, iPhone apps expand to most 2011 GM cars
GM today expanded its OnStar mobile apps to cover more cars than just the Chevy Volt. Both the Android and iOS apps for the brands will now monitor and sometimes control most 2011 model year Buick, Cadillac, Chevy and GMC vehicles. Bitkom-Studie: Online-Werbemarkt wächst weiter

AT&T: San Francisco is 90 days behind NYC in 3G upgrades
AT&T during the call to discuss its spring results revealed that its San Francisco upgrades lag about 90 days behind those in New York City. It didn't say when it expected upgrades to be completed, although Apple chief Steve Jobs alluded to the situation improving by the end of the summer. Among the upgrades are the addition of cell sites, third or fourth carriers and better antennas on existing sites and fiber optic to handle the backhaul supporting the network.

Analysis shows iPad as Apple's third-largest business
New graph analysis of Apple's Q3 results shows that the iPad, launched only in April, is already the company's third-most important business. New Microsoft brand logos, company tagline revealed at MGX event?
It looks like Microsoft may have revealed something big at its annual MGX (Microsoft Global Exchange) event, namely new logos for its main brands and a fresh brand motto. "Be What's Next" touts a teaser which has been posted on YouTube, along with a fast moving sequence of morphing logos, shuffling from Windows, to Windows Phone, Xbox, Bing, and finally the familiar Office logo that's been kicking around for a little longer. It's unclear if these are just treatments used for a promo at the event, or if this is a signal that Redmond is dumping its familiar (and frankly dated) iconography for something a little looser, leaner, and hipper, but we can't say it would be a bad thing. AT&T activates record 3.2 million iPhones in spring
AT&T today reported one of its best spring quarters ever as Apple again proved essential to its growth. Thanks to the iPhone 4 launch, the carrier activated the most iPhones it ever has in a spring quarter, jumping to 3.2 million iPhones from 2.4 million a year ago. It also had its best net customer additions for the season, but with 1.6 million total new customers owed more than half of that growth to Apple; 27 percent of iPhone activations, or 864,000, were for those new to AT&T.

Nokia profit tumbles 31% as market share slips
Nokia on Thursday confirmed outlook warnings by posting disappointing results for the spring. The phone producer's operating profit plunged 31 percent compared to a year ago as its device mix skewed away from smartphones and towards basic phones. Although it increased its total phone shipments to 111 million, a combination of lower average prices and lower profit margins on phones was responsible for almost all of the roughly $168 million drop.

EMC hebt nach gutem zweiten Quartal Jahresprognose erneut an

Server-Mainboards von Dell enthielten Schadcode
Dell hat bestätigt, dass einige Mainboards für PowerEdge-Server mit einem Virus infiziert waren. Laut einer Stellungnahme des Unternehmens waren nur Austauschteile für Server der Typen PowerEdge R310, R410, R510 und T410 betroffen. Keiner der von Dell direkt gelieferten Server sei infiziert gewesen.

15-Jähriger versteckt geheimen Code in iPhone-App
Ein 15-jähriger Programmierer namens Nick Lee führte Apple hinters Licht. Eine als Taschenlampe getarnte App enthielt in Wirklichkeit alle Funktionalitäten, die man benötigt um mit dem iPhone Tethering zu betreiben. Über ein paar Umwege kann so das iPhone zum WLAN-Hotspot umfunktioniert werden.

Wie San Francisco Chronicle berichtet, hat ein iPhone-Dieb am Montag Abend bei seinem Beutezug besonders großes Pech gehabt. IDC: Asus profitiert am meisten vom Wachstum des europäischen PC-Markts
Der PC-Markt in EMEA (Europa, Mittlerer Osten und Afrika) hat laut IDC im zweiten Quartal 2010 gemessen an den verkauften Stückzahlen stark zugelegt. Mit rund 24 Millionen PCs und Notebooks wurden 21,1 Prozent mehr verkauft als im selben Quartal des Vorjahres. Nach wie vor bauen tragbare PCs ihren Anteil am Gesamtmarkt aus, von ihnen wurden 26 Prozent mehr verkauft als 2009. Am erfolgreichsten hat Asus seine Marktanteile ausgebaut. Den geringsten Zuwachs der Top-Fünf-Hersteller hatte Dell zu verzeichnen.

FCC reevaluates US broadband competitiveness, finds 14 to 24 million lack access
The National Broadband Plan may one day bring broadband to everyone in the United States but, as a new report from the FCC itself reveals, there's still quite a ways to go. According to the report (issued every year by the agency), between 14 and 24 million Americans have no access to broadband, which is now defined by the FCC to be a 4Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream. That's a significant revision from the previous 200kbps downstream standard used by the annual report, and brings it in line with the minimum goals set by the National Broadband Plan.

Motorola sues Huawei and several former employees for stealing wireless trade secrets
Man, if you thought the lawsuit action in the mobile space was crazy before, well, you ain't seen nothing yet -- Motorola just sued Huawei and over a dozen former employees for conspiring to steal its wireless trade secrets and other proprietary technology over a period of years starting in 2001. Yeah, it's crazy. The lawsuit was originally filed in 2008 against four former Motorola engineers and a company called Lemko, all of whom Motorola accused of conspiring to stealing trade secrets related to wireless technology. After years of discovery in the case, it appears that Motorola realized the conspiracy went much deeper than it originally thought, leading the company to file a new complaint on July 16th, in which it named Huawei an

AT&T defensively publishes private dropped call data
While Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs said AT&T wouldn't let him reveal its proprietary data about dropped call statistics for competitive reasons, the mobile provider has revealed some numbers in an effort to defend its network from poor dropped call scores collected by ChangeWave.

iPad used for 3D effect

This is really wild -- Japan's Aircord lab has used the iPad to create a 3D effect, but not what you'd think, with the standard glasses and views. Instead, the iPad is used to project a set of three images onto a specially-coated glass pyramid, which then reflects the three video images in all directions, creating a 3D effect as you move around the display.

Fraunhofer FIT touch-free gesture-control for multiple users (video)
It seems like everyone is cooking up their own touch-free gesture-based control technology, just like every blogger is destined to refer to it as "Minority Report-like" or "Minority Report-esque," or "Tom Cruise-tastic!" Fraunhofer's FIT, the newest such project, has recently appeared on the YouTubes, where we must say it looks pretty darn good. Not only does it not require special gloves or markers, this thing also works in real time and can support multiple users (and multiple fingers). The researchers hope to use this for working with complex simulation data and in education, although there are some kinks to be worked out: currently elements like the reflections caused by wristwatches and the orientation of the palm confuses the system. Microsoft to give Windows Phone 7 devices to every employee
Microsoft followed in Apple's steps today by promising all employees a free smartphone at its Global Exchange meeting. The move would give as many as 90,000 staffers a Windows Phone 7 device when the first ones ship sometime before the holiday. The company didn't say which company would supply the phones or if it would require that users switch over when at work.

Google hiring peacemaker for troubled music service?
Google has had to take on a high-profile music lawyer to smooth over mounting problems in launching its Google Music service, insiders said this evening. Digital music attorney Elizabeth Moody has been hired to ease negotiations as none of the major labels appear willing to agree to terms that Google would consider viable for service, which would involve streaming music to the desktop and to Android phones. Moody has represented services such as MySpace Music and Spotify in the past and could potentially know how to reach common terms.

Microsoft to employees: 'everybody gets a Windows Phone 7!'
Microsoft guru extraordinaire Mary Jo Foley has retweeted a company employee boasting of an apparent commitment to hand out Windows Phone 7 devices to each and every one of Redmond's 90,000-plus employees around the world. That's certainly one way to spread the word -- and realistically, the cost to Microsoft is a drop in the bucket if they can really take advantage of the word-of-mouth advertising effect here. Of course, step one in that process is going to be making sure the product is absolutely rock solid by the time those gratis units start getting handed out.
