Nokia Kinetic concept offers some ideas Nokia might want to heed
Cellphone concepts are a dime a dozen, but a couple of particularly interesting ones have cropped up in recent days, including Andrew Kim's HTC 1, and this so-called Nokia Kinetic concept from British designer Jeremy Innes-Hopkins. Apple replies to House privacy concerns
As was requested in June, Apple did indeed reply by July 12th to the House Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus' demand for an explanation of iTunes privacy policies, reports say. Apple recently revised end-user terms to give itself the right to track "real-time geographic location" of devices, such as iPhones, for the sake of providing and improving "location-based products and services." Critics have worried about a number of pitfalls, such as the possibility of individual profiling, or device restrictions for not agreeing to iTunes terms.

Amazon: Kindle books now outselling hardcovers
Kindle e-books are now outselling hardcover books for the first time, Amazon said today. For every 100 hardcovers it sold in the spring, Amazon sold 143 Kindle titles; the figure didn't include free books or samples. Sales accelerated over the period, Amazon said: its rate in June increased to 180 e-books for every 100 hardcover texts.

Redbox to detail online movie service in October
Best known for its $1 DVD rentals, Redbox today confirmed rumors of an Internet movie service. The company's president Mitch Lowe promised to Bloomberg that details would come in October and promised that it would be an extension of the service, achieving things that the company "canít do in [its] kiosks."

Rumor: Apple to launch 4k video format?
Filed under: Apple TVHardMac is reporting that they've been told by one of their sources that Apple is gearing up to launch a new video format. Apple's supposed new format would be based on the Dirac codec which was developed by BBC Research. The codec is open source and currently supports 1920x1080 resolutions, but Apple plans to up the format to support 4k video - that's a resolution of up to 4096x2160. HardMac points out that many people still do not have 1080p HDTVs at home, much less TVs capable of supporting 4k resolution, but they theorize that Apple would be planning to enter the HDTV market from the high end - at the same time in

RIM finally catches up to the competition with non-GPS-based BlackBerry 'Locate Service'
It's hardly the first company to implement the technology in a smartphone, but it looks like RIM finally has an answer for folks not satisfied with the GPS capabilities of their BlackBerry. It's now announced the simply-named 'Locate Service' for developers, which relies on cell tower triangulation to to either augment the phone's built-in GPS, or completely replace it when a GPS signal isn't available. According to RIM, the service also includes a set of components that "integrate seamlessly" with the BlackBerry Maps and Contacts applications and, of course, the GPS capabilities of the device. BlackBerry Storm3 may be second mild refresh
RIM's one-time iPhone rival the may get its second low-key refresh in as many years if a slip from a presentation is borne out. The Storm3, nicknamed "Odin Refresh," would see little changed superficially from the Storm2 with just a five-megapixel camera, 512MB of RAM and 802.11n Wi-Fi as its upgrades. Most of the changes known by Engadget would be in software, in the form of BlackBerry OS 6 and a new 3G-to-Wi-Fi hotspot router app.

Apple, AT&T share acrimonious relationship
Both Apple and AT&T are to blame for the latter's network suffering under the weight of the iPhone, a Wired investigation suggests. Apple's part is said to stem largely from demanding unlimited Internet access for users, and being unwilling to bend on the matter, even though AT&T was unable to expand its network fast enough to accommodate the strain. Even though AT&T has asked to cooperate on fixing some problems, Apple has sometimes insisted that AT&T resolve them by itself.

iHome iA100ZE iPad alarm dock raises questions, supplies few answers
So, the iA100ZE iPad dock isn't anywhere in the same league as the iTar. To be fair, you can't fault iHome for trying to stir up some interest in an over-saturated market by strapping an iPad onto a fairly typical FM radio / alarm clock / dock. Apple's Magic Trackpad reaches FCC
Apple's Magic Trackpad gained further credibility on Monday with an FCC filing for its approval. The document shows only the label location but does show a small, squared design that uses only Bluetooth for wireless. It also carries the same A1339 model name, consistent with Apple's naming schemes, and refers to the device as a trackpad.

AMD moves up Ontario ultraportable chips to late 2010
AMD during the call discussing its latest results revealed that the company's Ontario ultraportable chip will arrive early. The processor had originally been slated for the first half of 2011 but is now due to arrive in the fall, "ahead of schedule," according to CEO Dirk Meyer. BlackBerry Storm 3 detailed in training slide: same look, more RAM?
For those of you hoping that RIM could pull off a handset capable of challenging the incredibly slim and futuristic tree-borne Android handsets in the touchphone hardware arena, you'll have to dream past the Storm 3. Intel makes 3.2GHz Core i7 970, 2.8GHz Core i5 760 official
Intel today quickly confirmed weekend leaks by confirming the launch of two new desktop processors. Topping the mix is the Core i7 970; the 32nm chip is Intel's first six-core processor outside of the Extreme Edition or Xeon chips, but it clocks at the same 3.2GHz as the quad-core 960 it effectively replaces. HP files for "PalmPad" trademark -- a webOS tablet, perhaps?
HP's been extremely direct in saying that it plans to release webOS tablets and other devices in the future, and now that the Palm acquisition is complete, it looks like those plans are starting to move forward -- the company just filed a trademark application for "PalmPad," which certainly sounds like a webOS tablet to us. Analysts split on value of iPhone 4 measures
Analyst opinions are differing in the wake of a Friday announcement by Apple, in which the company agreed to hand out refunds or free cases to iPhone 4 owners affected by reception issues. Kaufman's Shaw Wu comments that Apple "did the right thing" by offering the cases, noting that there has been "strong evidence" that a case can insulate the iPhone's sensitive antenna. Wu also points out that just a small percentage of people have complained, and that sources indicate a permanent hardware or software fix may still be coming.

Apple's Magic Trackpad gets FCC approval?
We're admittedly using our Jump To Conclusions Mat a little bit here, but we're pretty sure Apple's Magic Trackpad (or whatever they'll end up calling it) just got FCC approval -- and considering how tightly Apple usually manages its FCC dealings, this could mean it'll be announced as early as this week. A device known only by its model number A1339 is the culprit here, described as a "Bluetooth Device" without any associated filings for WiFi or WWAN networks. The ultra-rough label location diagram is definitely the right shape for the accessory, and what's interesting is that the test report was completed way back in October of 2009. Russland – droht Importverbot für zahlreiche Smartphones?
Auf Drängen des russischen Konzerns AFK Sistema kontaktiere die russische Regierung mehrere westliche Handy- und Smartphonehersteller, darunter offenbar auch Apple. Das Anliegen: Man sollte nicht nur das amerikanische GPS-System nutzen, sondern auch das russische Gegenstück Glonass. iHome puts out first iPad clock radio dock
iHome has introduced what is the first fully functional iPad dock with the iHome iA100ZE. It can also accommodate iPhones and iPods, and gets a Bluetooth connection in addition to an FM radio. Nokia Siemens picks up Motorola network infrastructure division for $1.2 billion
Nokia Siemens has just announced that it will be purchasing Motorola's wireless network infrastructure for a cool $1.2 billion in cash. This comes on the heels of an announcement by Moto that it would be splitting the company in two, one for Mobile Devices and one for Broadband and Mobility Solutions. It's clearly the company's strong showing in both WiMAX and CDMA that Nokia Siemens is after, although The New York Times points out that integrating the 7,500-strong staff, manufacturing, supply lines, and multiple product lines will be quite a challenge. The deal will hopefully be finalized by the end of the year. PR after the break.

Apple, others sued for claiming expired, unrelated patents
Apple, Sprint, Verizon and Samsung have been targeted in a new lawsuit, accusing the companies of false patent marketing, according to AppleInsider. Verizon confirms Kin's abrupt exit
Verizon today confirmed that it was pulling the Kin from stores early. The carrier is no longer selling the Kin One or Kin Two either online or at retail. Kin Studio and other back-end services are still expected to run, but for how long wasn't said.

When the Kobo e-reader first appeared, its very affordable pricepoint of $149 made it an attractive proposition. It's been a few months, however, and the market is ever-more crowded, with both dedicated e-readers as well as multi-taskers such as the iPad moving into the space big time. Bumper cases no longer on sale, pending giveaway

As announced on Friday, Apple is planning to provide free iPhone 4 cases (either the Bumper case or other yet-to-be-announced models) to all iPhone 4 purchasers through September 30, 2010. Anyone who bought a Bumper already is due to get a refund.

RIM may have suffered an unintentional humbling today through a set of videos (available below) demoing the yet-to-be-launched BlackBerry 9800. Motorola's rugged i1 coming to Sprint: July 25 for $150 on contract
A solid four months after first seeing thing plastered across half of Las Vegas, Motorola's i1 finally has a date with Sprint. Bumper case orders halt at Apple Store
The official bumper cases for the iPhone 4 are now temporarily off sale at the Apple online store. All colors are listed as "currently unavailable" worldwide, including at the US, UK, French and German storefronts. The stock-out is expected, as Apple has promised to give out free cases later this week to people affected by the iPhone 4's reception issues, including not only the bumpers but a selection of third-party cases.

Apple hat heute bekannt gegeben, dass das iPad von Freitag an auch in Österreich, den Niederlanden, Belgien, Irland, Luxemburg, Mexico, Neuseeland, Hong Kong und Singapur verfügbar sein wird.
Die Preise in unseren Nachbarstaaten dürften sich durch die Bank an den aktuelle deutsche Europreisen orientieren, hierzulande kostet das Pad Wi-Fi momentan je nach Speicherausstattung zwischen 499 und 699 Euro, die Wi-Fi+3G-Variante ist zu Preisen von 599 bis 799 Euro erhältlich. Das iPad ist ab Freitag weltweit somit in 20 Ländern erhältlich, im Laufe des Jahres sollen laut Apple noch "viele weitere Länder" folgen.

Seagate dipped into the world of simple network-attached storage b launching the GoFlex Home. The drive potentially avoids the common problems with future upgrades by using its own GoFlex system for the storage: the NAS has a modular base that takes any single disk, desktop-sized GoFlex drive for a swap up in capacity without having to replace the drive or open a bay door. Apple has just let word out that it'll be bringing its super-selling slate to nine new markets. The Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore are all getting their hands on the device this Friday, July 23. We were just remarking on how the iPad's sales pace had slowed down recently, but this expansion in markets should move things along toward rounding the next milestone. Local pricing hasn't yet been revealed, but it's not like there's long to wait now. "Many" more countries are promised before the end of the year, so don't despair if your local Apple Store isn't stocking the iPad just yet.

Samsung says its phones are immune to iPhone's antenna woes
Samsung today became the latest to shoot back at Apple as it said on Sunday that its phones were purportedly immune to the iPhone 4's reception issues. Company spokesman Shin Young-joon told the Korea Herald that the Omnia II's antenna position at the bottom not only reduced the likelihood of dampening the phone signal but that, allegedly, it was physically impossible for a problem to happen. The design was such that there was "no room for such problems to happen in the future," he said.

Hanvon facing pileup of e-reader stock due to iPad?
Hanvon today denied a claim by China's Sina that the iPad was leaving it with as many as 500,000 unsold e-readers. Intel's 3.2GHz hexacore i7-970 now shipping
Just this once, DigiTimes has turned out to be spot on with its prognostication. iHome-Multiladegerät soll für iPods, iPad und mehr
Die Ladestation iB969 von iHome soll mit dem wilden Sammelsurium an Netzteilen und -kabeln Schluss machen, das sich heutzutage in den meisten Haushalten in Steckdosennähe herumtreibt.

Apple zahlt offenbar doch keinen Lohnzuschuss für die Mitarbeiter des Zulieferers Foxconn. Im Juni hatte eine chinesische IT-Website berichtet, das Apple zwei Prozent des Gewinns eines Apple-Produkts an Foxconn zahlen möchte, damit das Unternehmen die Löhne seiner Mitarbeiter erhöht. Ein Foxconn-Manager hat entsprechende Berichte als “pure Spekulation” zurückgewiesen, Foxconn habe nie Zuschüsse von Apple erhalten.

Verizon's 4G LTE SIM in the wild
It's still baking our noodles to think about a Verizon device using a SIM on American soil -- but sure enough, those cards allegedly set up in Big Red's systems are floating around in the wild. What you're looking at here is a SIM that will slot into Verizon's LTE-enabled 4G devices when they launch later this year (hence the big "4G" logo on there), and yes, they look just like the SIMs you've been using for the last two decades on carriers around the world. The more things change, the more they stay the same, it seems.

Verizon FiveSpot CDMA / GSM mobile WiFi hotspot leaks out
Looks like Verizon's about to take its mobile data game worldwide -- we just got this snap of the "FiveSpot," a "global ready" mobile WiFi hotspot . That certainly sounds like a hybrid CDMA / UMTS mobile hotspot to us, which makes sense -- Verizon already sells a bunch of world phones with dual CDMA and GSM radios, so a globetrotting riff on the MiFi fits right in. Based on the name, we'd guess this supports five simultaneous users, but that's a guess. No idea when this will hit or how much it might cost, but we'll keep our eyes open -- check the box shot after the break.

White iPhone 4 delayed by capacity, precision issues
The reasons behind the month-long delay in delivering white iPhone 4 units may have been provided in a report from this Saturday. The 21st Century Herald explained that Lens Technology, believed to be the contractor, is having difficulty reliably getting the right opacity and thickness for the pure white paint that Apple wants on the glass panels. The setback, along with other obstacles, has reportedly left Lens' production at just half the necessary level, or about three panels per hour.

Verizon halting Kin sales, supply getting returned to sender?
Not that Verizon really cared much for it anyway, but according to WMExperts, the carrier is preparing to cease sales of the Microsoft's Kin altogether. As for the fate of the remaining stock, it's apparently being sent back to, well, somewhere. While a few retail stores we called disavowed any knowledge of such a thing, PhoneArena has a supposed internal screenshot that suggests they may soon change their tone. Either way, Verizon's not selling Kin online anymore, that's for sure -- quoth the raven, 404.
