AT&T: 3G upgrades have been slowed by shortages, device mix
AT&T CTO John Donovan mentioned at a San Francisco conference today that the speed of the carrier's 3G network upgrades have been slowed by some extraordinary factors. He noted that parts shortages have been a significant factor and have prevented the company from upgrading when it would like even when the plans were in place. The explosion of interest in smartphones has also "broken down" the usual testing routine by providing many more chipsets and devices to verify, the executive said.

iPhone dev brings in $253K in one month from camera app
iPhone developer tap tap tap has allegedly fetched $253,000 in revenue from a single app sold for one month in the App Store. The app, Camera+, provides photography tools such as scene modes, cropping, digital zoom, and a Lightbox. Pandigital outs personal photo scanner
Pandigital has released a new photo scanner that can feed through 8.5 by 11-inch photos or documents. The Personal Photo Scanner/Converter doesn't require a PC connection, as photos can be scanned directly onto an included SD memory card. Industry group disputes Jobs arguments against Blu-ray
Apple CEO Steve Jobs was mistaken in portraying Blu-ray as a passing fad,
says Blu-ray Disc Association chairman Andy Parsons. Blu-ray is an
increasingly common option for Windows desktops and notebooks, but not
yet available in any Mac system, including even the high-end Mac Pro.

Canon EOS 60D may come as soon as tomorrow
Canon's very frequently rumored EOS 60D could at last launch this week if mounting evidence is currect. An entry on creativeLIVE's calendar for August 25 refers to a "special epic event" whose details will be made public on July 13, a date that has surfaced twice before while being connected to the new mid-range DSLR. The date is far from confirmed but would both be consistent with suspicions of a summer release and would make sense with the run-up to the Photokina expo on September 21.

Canadian iPhone 4 launch pushed to end of July?
Amid reports suggesting the iPhone 4 is on its way to Spain and Italy toward the end of the month, a separate source claims the Canadian launch is likely to be scheduled for July 28. Microsoft: 74% of workplace PCs still use Windows XP
Microsoft's Corporate VP of Windows, Tammi Reller, admitted today at the Windows Partner Conference that nearly three quarters, or 74 percent, of business PCs are still using Windows XP. Despite both Windows Vista and 7 having been released as far back as three years ago, many have refused to upgrade and in some cases are keeping systems for longer than they would have before. The average age of a work PC is older than it has ever been, at 4.4 years, Reller said.

Skype says Fring violated its Terms of Use, 'damaging our brand and reputation' in the process
It looks like Fring's recent decision to block Skype access to its iPhone 4 video app was the final straw for Skype, who charges that VoIP network was in breach of the Terms of Use and EULA for the Skype API. "Over time," writes General Counsel Robert Miller, "Fring's mis-use of our software was increasingly damaging our brand and reputation with our customers." Senators grill FCC Chairman over 'modest' National Broadband Plan goals
Bringing broadband to everybody is certainly an admirable goal, but at least some US Senators are apparently starting to question if the new National Broadband Plan is ambitious enough. Samsung hopes to regain phone lead from Apple in France
Samsung today vowed to take back a lead in cellphone revenue in France from Apple's iPhone. Although it still has the most popular phones by sheer volume, shipping 39 percent (4.5 million) of phones in the country, the Korean firm is upset that Apple now represents 26 percent of value in the market where Samsung has 25 percent. We've already had some indication that the next Apple TV might boast a low, low $99 price tag, and it looks like Apple might be working to make TV shows cheaper as well. Fring claims Skype blocking VoIP under legal threat
Fring on Monday accused Skype of anti-competitive behavior after it blocked the use of Fring for Skype chats. The freeze came after Fring said it had to temporarily stop Skype to accommodate the load from iPhone 4 video chats. The app developer accused Skype's team of being "cowards" by not letting the service come back to Fring and of trying to "muzzle competition" by forcing users to run Skype's official app.

Consumer Reports recommends against iPhone 4
Watchdog publication Consumer Reports has, through its website, announced that it cannot endorse the iPhone 4. The magazine tested three iPhone 4s, bought from three different retailers in the New York area, in a radio frequency isolation chamber where each was made to connect to a simulated celltower. As has been frequently reported and charged in lawsuits, CR confirms that covering the lower left-hand side of the device causes signal to fall by as much as 20dB, enough to drop a call.

Bina48 is one humanoid robot you're going to want to hang out with
The photo you see above is of Bina48, one of the most advanced humanoid robots around. Bina48 resides at the Terasem Movement Foundation in Bristol, Vermont, and while she doesn't exactly excel at conversation, she's far more coherent than many we've spied. Bina is a body-less robot modeled on a real Bina, who spent hours talking to the bot to give her human personality traits and vocabulary idiosyncrasies. Fring for iPhone 4 allows video calls with Android, Symbian
Fring today updated its namesake iPhone app (free, App Store) to enable some of the first multi-platform video calling on the iPhone 4. The addition uses the front camera for two-way video, even over 3G, and will support it with any other device that can use a similarly equipped version of Fring, ranging from other Android phones like the Evo 4G to some of Nokia's Symbian S60 devices.

Netgear upgraded its ReadyNAS network-attached storage in a major form tonight with its first Ultra devices. The four-bay Ultra 4 and six-bay Ultra 6 are built for home users who want to move as much data to a network share as possible and adds an extended amount of media sharing as a result. Both boxes can serve as remote recording space for TiVos on the network, and the spaces can be shared through Orb to be played on iPads and other iOS devices as well as Android and BlackBerry smartphones.

Intel may phase out mobile Celeron by 2011
Intel could put an end to the notebook Celeron line entirely by next year, notebook suppliers said on Friday. The chip producer is reportedly ramping down production to where it would drop the mobile Celeron entirely in 2011. It would leave just the dual-core Atom and Pentium to occupy the space, and by its exit, would avoid competing for attention.

A 1.2-inch square touch display has surfaced at Taiwan's Apple.pro with clear Apple labeling and a thin black frame. China renews Google's Internet license
The Chinese government today renewed Google's Internet Content Provider license, allowing it to keep running its services in the country. The clearance followed a change by Google to its policy of redirecting traffic to its unfiltered Hong Kong site that officials warned would likely see Google's services forced out of the country. The company now instead simply takes customers to a special landing page where they have the option of visiting Google Hong Kong if they want to search.

NTP today said it has sued Apple, Google, HTC, LG, Microsoft and Motorola for allegedly infringing eight patents for wireless e-mail. Ex-Apple dev pushes multi-touch SproutCore apps
Charles Jolley, the founder of the SproutCore standard, has left his recent position with Apple and is now using the technology at a new start-up to help other companies produce multi-touch apps. SproutCore is an open-source framework for rich Internet apps, notably employed in Apple's MobileMe web apps. Jolley's company, Strobe, is combining HTML5 and native formats to produce apps than can both be installed via the App Store and accessed via Safari.

Google: Jobs' Android accusations are "rewriting history"
Google during its time at the Allen & Co. Sun Valley media conference said that Apple CEO Steve Jobs' claims about Android being a response to iPhone were spin. Co-founder Larry Page argued that Jobs' view of Android coming afterwards was a "little bit of rewriting history" and reminded guests that Google had been developing Android for a "very long time" before the iPhone was introduced in early 2007. Infineon seen close to selling cell chip business to Intel
Rumors that Intel would buy Infineon's cellular chip business gained fuel on Friday as Germany's Die Welt claimed that a deal is close. The two firms have purportedly met several times in the past two weeks and are tentatively at a price of between $1.1 billion and $1.4 billion. Google to resume mapping Street View in some countries
Google let the public know on Thursday that its grounded fleet of Street View collecting vehicles is resuming mapping on a limited basis. The May stoppage was due to the software giant accidentally collecting Wi-Fi data rather than just street-level images of roads and their surroundings. The vehicles are made lighter, as their Wi-Fi scanning equipment was removed. At the same time, independent security experts Stroz Friedberg have ensured Wi-Fi related software was likewise removed from the vehicles.

Barnes & Noble iPad app updated, Android version coming
Barnes & Noble this morning posted an upgraded version of its eReader app for the iPad (free, App Store) that brings it more in step with iBooks, other apps, and the features on some dedicated, LCD-based e-readers. Like the special control in Apple's iBooks app, the Barnes & Noble client can now tune the screen brightness itself instead of relying on the tablet's overall preferences. T-Mobile contributed to concerns about ASUS and Garmin today by quietly dropping the price of the Garminfone from its original $200 to $130. Nokia shows detailed samples of N8's camera
Nokia has released sample images taken by its upcoming Nokia N8 flagship handset. The images are said to be unedited, and represent the 12.1-megapixel camera's capabilities. Each 12-megapixel image has relatively little noise and potentially illustrates why the Nokia camera may beat out the iPhone 4's, which proved superior to both the Droid X and Evo 4G in testing.

Developer challenges likelihood of iAd profits
A new report challenges the notion that iAd can be extremely profitable for some developers. On Thursday, the creator of LED Light for iPhone 4 claimed to have produced over $1,370 in one day through iAds, with an eCPM (effective cost per thousand impressions) value of about $148. iPad triples tablet sales in Europe as PC prices go back up
The iPad nearly tripled sales of tablets in Europe during just its first month on sale, Context Research estimated this week. Apple's tablet was only available from May 28 in the continent, but by itself grew the market by 257 percent. The figure is one of the few specific to the continent and suggests that the combined Windows tablet PC market in Europe for spring was well below the hundreds of thousands of iPads likely to have been sold.

Blue Crowbar has upgraded its software for exporting tweets and photos to Twitter, renaming the software TwitExport 2. The original software was split between iPhoto and Aperture as plug-ins for each, then named iPhoto2Twitter and Aperture2Twitter. It allows users to send a photo or a batch of photos from either Mac imaging software title to Twitter via Mobypicture or TwitPic. It also supports Aperture 3's 64-bit mode and sending movies from iPhoto.

China greenlights Wi-Fi-equipped iPhones
The Chinese government has granted network license access for a new iPhone, one prepared for the country's WAPI security standard, reports say. The approval comes by way of the Telecommunications Equipment and Certification Center, and supplied photos suggest it is linked to an iPhone 3G or 3GS. With WAPI support, it should now be possible to sell a Wi-Fi-equipped iPhone in China.

Next iPod touch may use 3.2-megapixel back camera
The momentum behind a camera-equipped iPod touch grew on Friday as a rumor now suggests it will have a 3.2-megapixel camera and not the five-megapixel camera mentioned by a retailer before. The sensor would behave much like that for the iPhone 3GS and could be necessary, as the iPhone 4's camera is larger and could be too large to include along with a front camera, if at all.

HTC takes wait-and-see approach to tablets
HTC PR and online community manager Eric Lin continued providing color for the company's strategy with remarks that the company has no near-term plans to create a tablet. YouTube adds support for 4K videos
YouTube today touted a first in web video as it became the first to support greater-than-HD video. It can now handle movies up to 4K widescreen, or 4096x3072; the resolution is about four times larger than 1080p and is dense enough to remain sharp at distances that would normally be reserved for 4K projectors. It can also handle intermediate steps such as 2K and is invoked just by choosing the original video size.

RIM staffer alleging BlackBerry 9800 pushed to November
A purported sighting of the upcoming BlackBerry 9800 in Chicago has hinted the phone might not ship until the fall. In a recent conversation with what's said to be a PR agent for RIM in Chicago, a CrackBerry forum member claims to have both had brief hands-on time with the touchscreen slider as well as to have been told the phone will only be ready by November, or considerably later than the widely rumored late summer target. Apple sues three MagSafe adapter clone sellers
Apple on Thursday sued three US resellers for allegedly infringing on the patents behind the MagSafe power adapters for the MacBook and MacBook Pro. The Northern District of California complaint accuses Brilliant Store, Hootoo and Sunvalleytek International of selling copies such as the "AC Adapter MagSafe" without permission. The companies involved in some cases have made it clear both that they sell the actual power bricks as well as the duplicates.

Why the iPad is already the best reader
A recent study from the Nielsen Norman Group found that those who read books on an e-reader tend to get through content more slowly than those who read actual books. It also found that, on a scale of 1 to 7, Apple's iPad provides the best reading experience out of all e-readers with a 5.8 rating. It was closely followed by Amazon's Kindle, which tallied a 5.7 rating. Many still gave the nod to paper, which remained the fastest to read of all.

Apple putting iPad ads near Dell Streak, HP slate searches
Apple has been hoping to grab some possible tablet buyers by running Google ads against its own competition, searchers are finding today. A search in the UK for the Dell Streak, where it's already on sale, turns up an AdWords spot for the iPad alongside those from Dell itself. Likewise, looking for the as yet uncertain HP slate has been turning up similar ads for some web residents; since it's unreleased, the HP device gives Apple the only sponsored search result.

Although the VG2428wm is meaured out at 24 inches, its viewable area is actually 23.6 inches; anyone who remembers the days of CRT displays will remember these slight exaggerations being the norm. The difference is considerably smaller here, though, and if anything helps improve the perceived sharpness of the 1080p (1920x1080) resolution.

BlackBerry tablet may have dual cameras, 1GHz chip
RIM's rumored BlackBerry tablet may have had firmer details provided today through a research note from Rodman and Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar later on Friday. Sources in the industry claim the slate could be smaller than thought with just a seven inch display, but it could be a truly independent device rather than just the rebirth of the Foleo portrayed earlier. It would have a 1GHz processor from an unknown supplier and both front and back cameras, with videoconferencing as its most unique feature.

Android to hit 100,000 apps in July
Android Market is about to hit a milestone symbolic of Google closing the gap with Apple, raw stats indicate. At the current rate, the Android store should reach 100,000 total apps before the end of July, and as of now is already over 90,000. The rate of growth is now high enough that AndroLib estimates over 15,000 apps were added in June alone.

AT&T giving out 3G MicroCells to long-serving customers
AT&T could be using the 3G MicroCell as a way of keeping customers onboard. A subscriber, Dale, this weekend told Electronista he had received a letter from the carrier giving him the femtocell as a reward for being one of AT&T's "most valuable customers." The deal was honored, but retail staff didn't have an explanation as to why he was given the normally $150 local cell site for free.

GeForce GTX 460 gives more speed at $200
NVIDIA today brought out its first more frugal GeForce 400 series chipset in the form of the GeForce GTX 460. The recently leaked hardware uses the new 40 nanometer, GF104 chipset and is actually in some areas faster than the GTX 465. It has fewer stream (visual rendering) processors, at 336 versus 352, but has more texture addresses at 56 compared to 44; it also has a faster clock speeds across the board with a 675MHz core, 1.35GHz shader (effect) clock speeds, and a 900MHz actual speed for its GDDR5 memory.

Sprint sells 300,000 Evo 4G phones, but shortages worsen
Sprint has sold about 300,000 Evo 4G phones since they went on sale in early June, analysts at Macquarie group estimated today [reg. required]. The demand is characterized as "strong" but has seen the supply shortages worsen over the past few weeks. BlackBerry OS 6 devices for CDMA may not ship until 2011
Devices running BlackBerry OS 6.0 may not reach CDMA networks until next year, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said in a research note today. Industry sources said that the OS is in "beta testing" and should ship with its first GSM device, likely the BlackBerry 9800, before the end of September. CDMA devices, however, aren't so far and could be three to six months behind, pushing their launches either to the end of the year or early 2011.

A recall notice has been issued for a select number of Time Capsule routers. Some models may suddenly shut down again after startup, Apple notes, or simply not power on at all. Microsoft is "hardcore" about tablets, hints HP still around

Second App Store fraud incident hits iTunes users
iTunes and the App Store have again been hit by fraud in recent days, according to reports. In the new case, apps by a company called WiiSHii Network -- including [EN]GYOYO Shanghai Travel Helper, [EN]GYOYO Beijing Travel Helper and [CN]GYOYO Beijing Travel Helper -- were suddenly thrust high into the paid charts of the Travel category. At least one person, Harper Reed, says that his iTunes account was hijacked to make this happen, since about 34 WiiSHii apps were billed to his account for a total of $168.89.

To test the system, I took a drive from Southern Arizona to Chandler, a suburb of Phoenix. First off, having the multitasking capabilities was wonderful. I could take or make calls without stopping the route guidance, and while I was on the phone, I could get notice of turns. Since my phone was connected to my car via Bluetooth, the voice announcements came through the car speaker.

Grokion came out a little over a month ago, but it's worth checking out if you haven't seen it yet. The game provides an interesting mix of Mega Man-esque 2D platforming action and Metroid-style exploration, and while Grokion doesn't quite live up to the polish of either of those games, it's an excellent iPhone-based indie title.

It's all about how you hold it, apparently. Intel's Labs have churned out a proposal for a new user-identifying system to be embedded into remote controls. Given a bit of time to familiarize itself with particular users, this new motion sensor-equipped channel switcher is capable of correctly recognizing its holder just by the way he operates it. US-Gericht reduziert Geldstrafe gegen Filesharer Joel Tenenbaum

Nvidia Geforce GTX 460: Fermi erreicht die Mittelklasse mit neuer GPU
Der GF104 ist da - auch wenn Nvidia seinen ersten neuen Desktop-Grafikprozessor seit dem GF100 alias Fermi, selbst inzwischen nicht mehr so nennt. Apple recalling flawed 2008 Time Capsules

If you've been a TUAW reader for any length of time, you've probably heard about the ongoing issues with Apple's Wi-Fi router / big hard disk, a.k.a. Time Capsule. A number of users have complained that after about 18 months or so, their Time Capsules go MIA. They either won't power on, or they tend to shut down unexpectedly. Neither of those are actions you want to see with a backup strategy.
Several sites are reporting that Apple has issued a Knowledge Base article in the Support Forums that notes that some Time Caps

USB vs. AC outlet charging on the iPhone 4
Filed under: iPhoneThis whole charging / not charging issue with the iPad and iPhone is pretty confusing. At least with the iPad, if it's not plugged into an outlet or a USB port that's delivering enough juice, you get the whole "not charging" message near the battery indicator yet, it does charge, but slowly.
The "not charging" message doesn't appear when the iPhone 4 is plugged into a lower-powered USB port (in my experience), but is it still sucking the same amount of juice it would from an AC outlet?
