Skype calls not allowed over iPad 3G connections

During our live iPad 3G first look this afternoon, TUAW readers were able to confirm that Skype calls still cannot be placed over the iPad 3G's cellular network connection. The Skype application will not connect those calls, telling users that, "You need WiFi to call over Skype." So what's the reason for this? "Skype calls over 3G networks are currently not allowed due to contractual restrictions."

Octane Render performs CUDA-accelerated ray tracing
New Zealand's Refractive Software has released a beta of Octane Render, a new rendering tool for Mac, Windows and Linux systems. The software is notable for exploiting NVIDIA's CUDA architecture, which accelerates ray tracing on systems with one or more NVIDIA videocards. Octane can run 10 or more times faster than apps using CPU-based ray tracing, Refractive claims.

Droid Incredible selling out despite little hype
Early updates have hinted that the Droid Incredible has at least partly sold out in its first day of sales. In the New York and New Jersey areas, some stores have run entirely dry of the Android phone while others have run low. Online, Verizon has had to repeatedly delay shipments and now won't start shipping new orders until May 7th.

Briefly: Optimizing Photoshop CS5; MailWing organizes mail
diglloyd has posted a guide to enhancing performance in Photoshop CS5, Adobe's just-released imaging software. The software is said to behave better simply as a result of switching to 64-bit code, but adding extra RAM may make major improvements in some cases, along with properly tweaking cache tile size. It may also be more efficient to leave the program running so it doesn't have to re-allocate memory, the guide suggests.

ASUS CEO: netbooks will outsell tablets, Eee Pad to run 'Microsoft software'

Alright, so your six-screen Eyefinity rig may not be obsolete just yet, but it's definitely just been knocked down a few notches on the jaw drop-o-meter. Web-based iTunes in works, but not soon after Lala
Apple is reading a web version of iTunes but isn't close enough to switch it on after it shuts down Lala next month, leaks from the music industry hinted today. The company is now believed to be in talks with labels but that the progress is "preliminary at best." Such timing makes it unlikely to go live in time for WWDC on June 7th.

Calls made for Nokia CEO to resign over lack of iPhone rival
Nokia could oust its CEO if the company doesn't turn its performance around, multiple analysts said today. Investors are upset that Nokia hasn't been able to produce a true iPhone rival or take other steps to improve its financial health and are thought to be blaming company leader Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo for much of the trouble. Both Alan B. Lancz & Associates and MKM Partners believe Nokia's board could be under extreme pressure if there aren't signs of improvement by the summer, when the N8 ships.

NHL launches first official iPad app
The NHL says it has released its first official app for the iPad, Ice Time Playoffs Edition. Like most major sports apps, Ice Time provides a collection of live content, including radio, scores and statistics. Video is limited to highlight clips however, whether after every period or every game, the latter including condensed 12-minute versions of matches. Counter-rumor says HP slate still on track
An uncommon opposing rumor today insisted that the HP slate was still in development. An unnamed but presumably HP-connected source rejected the idea that HP had canceled the tablet and said the notion itself was odd. Adobe CEO: “Mac-Betriebsystem schuld an Abstürzen bei Nutzung von Flash”

US-Verkaufsstart fürs 3G-iPad: Erste Bilder und Berichte
Während wir hierzulande das iPad noch nicht einmal vorbestellen können, freuen sich die ersten Apple-Kunden in den USA bereits über die 3G-Version des iPad. Offiziell ist der Verkaufsstart auf 23 Uhr unserer Zeit angesetzt, bei unseren Kollegen von der iLounge hat der Paketbote aber bereits geklingelt. Die zugehörige Bildergalerie findet sich hier auf Flickr. Von Interesse dürfte in erster Linie der Einschub für die kleine Micro-SIM-Karte sein, der Rest ist bis auf die schwarze Antennenabdeckung analog zur Wi-Fi-Version und somit bekannt. iPad WiFi+3G ab heute in den USA erhältlich
Jetzt auch mit UMTS: In Amerika ist das iPad ab heute auch mit zusätzlicher UMTS-Mobilfunkkarte zu haben. Bisher waren dort lediglich die WiFi-Versionen erhältlich. Die ersten 3G-Geräte sind bereits bei Kunden eingetroffen. Zwischen 16 und 17 Uhr Ortszeit schliessen heute alle US-amerikanischen Apple Retail Stores für eine Stunde, um den Verkaufsstart der neuen Modelle vorzubereiten. Amazon retaliating against Penguin over e-book pricing
Amazon today was reported as having dropped the prices on some of Penguin's physical books to force a deal with the publisher for e-books [subscription required]. Coming weeks after Penguin stopped providing Kindle books on April 1st, Amazon has cut the costs of some brand new hardcover books to the same $10 it would normally charge for a digital edition. The price slash would be especially painful for Penguin as it and other publishers hate major discounts on new titles.

Confirmed: LG's Moorestown-based GW990 won't be made
Considering the almost complete absence of love in the commercial marketplace for Moorestown and Moblin -- and the fact that there's no sign of MeeGo building serious momentum just yet -- we're sure that Intel would've just loved for the drop-dead-sexy GW990 to serve as the platform's crown jewel for 2010. French, Irish iTunes Stores open up movie sales
Apple has expanded the French and Irish iTunes storefronts, adding movie sales to them for the first time. Visitors to either can buy and rent movies from major American studios, including Fox, MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Disney and Warner Brothers. Of special interest though may be the regional studios, as Irish shoppers will have access to movies from E1, Optimum and Lionsgate UK, while French shoppers will have access to Pathé, SND and StudioCanal.

Roboter: BallP ist trotz ruppiger Erscheinung ein großer Balancekünstler

Bald werden die Tage kommen, wo Roboter die Zirkusartisten ablösen werden. Vielleicht. Motorisches Potential scheinen sie mittlerweile zu besitzen, auch wenn das hautenge Glitzerköstum bis dahin überdacht werden müsste. Dr. Masaaki Kumagai von der Tohoku Gakuin University etwickelte den BallP (Ball Inverted Pendulum), ein 20 Zoll großer Bot, der auf Bowling-Bällen/Kugeln balancieren kann und scheinbar nicht aus der Ruhe zu bringen ist. Wirkt alles sehr souverän, auch die Synchronvorstellung mit anderen BallPs zeugt vom artistischen Talent. Das Video nach dem Break.

ASUS: Netbooks still likely to outsell iPad, other tablets
Tablets like the iPad won't overtake netbooks in the near future, ASUS chief Jerry Shen told the press at a conference discussing its latest results on Friday. Shen acknowledged that Apple had kickstarted the tablet market but insisted that the iPad and other tablets were in a different market and didn't truly overlap. Musikdienst Lala macht Ende Mai dicht: Start für iTunes Stream?

Der Musikstreamingservice Lala, der vor geraumer Zeit von Apple gekauft wurde, wird am 31. Mai eingestellt. Schon lange wurde geraten, was Apple aus dem StartUp machen würde. Nun ist klar, dass Lala in der Form, wie man es kennt, nicht mehr existieren wird. Userdaten sollen auf die jeweiligen iTunes-Accounts umgelegt werden. Steht nun der Beginn eines iTunes-eigenen Streaming-Service an? Es sind natürlich alles nur Vermutungen, liegt aber nicht sonderlich fern, wo Apple der größte Musikverkäufer geworden ist. Da einen weiteren Fuß in die Tür in die prosperierende Streamingsektion zu setzen klingt relativ logisch.

Nach Steve Jobs' Kritik: Adobe plant Abkehr von Apple
Adobes Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Kevin Lynch hat eine neue Runde im Streit zwischen seinem Unternehmen und Apple eingeleitet. "Arbeiteten Apple und Adobe so zusammen, wie wir es mit vielen anderen Partnern tun, könnten wir großartige Flash-Produkte für das iPhone und den iPod Touch herstellen, da sind wir uns sicher", schreibt Lynch in einem Blogbeitrag als Antwort auf Steve Jobs' offenen Brief zu Flash. 'Spirit' jailbreak to follow launch of iPad 3G
A public jailbreak for the iPad, codenamed Spirit, should be available sometime after today's launch of the iPad 3G, says the unofficial iPhone Dev Team. The hack is noted to be the same one demonstrated after the launch of the Wi-Fi iPad, which in turn was based on the original Spirit used to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 devices. iPads currently rely on unique firmware, iPhone 3.2.

JooJoo tablet to get 3G in 3 months, USB storage soon
Fusion Garage CEO Chandra Rathakrishnan confirmed today that a 3G version of the JooJoo tablet will be ready in three months and follow a different sales strategy. While unveiled at the same time as its $499 Wi-Fi only counterpart, the 3G edition is now due to ship as a carrier-subsidized device. Samsung to ship white NX10 on May 7th
Samsung said it will release a special, white version of its mirrorless pro camera, the NX10, on May 7th. The interchangeable lens camera is unchanged on the inside, but the white version will ship with a 30mm pancake lens and a leather case. Luxury goods maker Louis Vuitton has offered GQ a brief look at its upcoming iPad case. Sporting a simple sleeve-style design, the case offers a notch at the top for easy removal of the iPad, and leaves the top uncovered for access to the headphone port. Roboter: Mahru aus Korea tanz und kickt per Motion Capture

Vom Korea Institute of Science & Technology (KIST) stammt der Roboter namens Mahru, der schon länger durch die Kanäle geisterte, aber nun auch in Videoform in der Sphäre gesichtet wurde. Mahru ist sehr beeindruckend. Er kann nämlich durch Motion Capture gesteuert werden. Heißt, der Herr hinten tanzt sich einen Ast ab und der Bot macht die Bewegung nahezu in Echtzeit nach. Apple Stores to close for an hour before iPad 3G launch
American Apple Stores will close briefly this Friday, from 4PM to 5PM, in order to prepare for the launch of the iPad 3G, according to the company. iPhone apps make up 21% of Gameloft sales in 1Q

The French developer, one of the world's biggest publishers of games for mobiles, says iPhone apps accounted for 21% of its sales in the first quarter of 2010. Microsoft late Thursday said it largely sided with Apple in the dispute over Flash. The Windows developer's General Manager for Internet Explorer, Dean Hachamovitch, argued that HTML5 was the future of the web and cited the same problems with Flash mentioned by Apple's Steve Jobs. RIM has passed by Sony Ericsson to become the fourth largest phone manufacturer of any kind, according to new data by IDC. Adobes Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Kevin Lynch hat eine neue Runde im Streit zwischen seinem Unternehmen und Apple eingeleitet. Apple to shut down Lala on May 31
Streaming audio service Lala today said it would shut down on May 31st. The closure follows five months after the buyout by Apple late last year and will see Lala stop taking new users, or paying for web-only songs, effective immediately. BSA räumt Firmen Schonfrist zur Prüfung von Softwarelizenzen ein
Die Business Software Alliance (BSA) hat eine deutschlandweite "Schonfrist" für Unternehmen ausgerufen, um diese zur Prüfung ihrer Lizenzsituation zu motivieren. Bei Firmen, die sich bis Ende Mai 2010 registrieren, verspricht die BSA 30 Tage lang Hinweise auf illegale Software in diesen Unternehmen nicht rechtlich zu verfolgen. Nach Angaben der BSA sind durch die TV-Kampagne "Es gibt gute Gründe, illegale Software zu melden" über 10.000 Hinweise eingegangen. Den betroffenen Firmen solle durch die Schonfrist im Mai eine Möglichkeit gegeben werden, ihre Software selbst zu legalisieren.

Kostenlos testen: Seit heute lassen sich alle Programme der Adobe Creative Suite 5 als Demo-Versionen von der Adobe-Webseite herunterladen. Dazu ist lediglich eine Online-Registrierung erforderlich. Zur Zeit stehen die Programme allerdings nur in englischer Sprache zu Verfügung, deutsche Versionen sollen in den nächsten Tagen folgen. Voraussetzungen sind Mac OS X 10.5.7 oder neuer und ein Intel-Mac mit Core 2 Duo-Prozessor. Die Testversionen sind einen Monat lang lauffähig. MSI stellt „Big Bang XPower“ offiziell in Dienst

Dem iPad sein Forum
Zwei Jahre nach dem iPhone kommt nun also auch das iPad in die Schweiz – bereits in grösserer Anzahl finden sich in der Schweiz iPad-Besitzer. Offiziell kommt das neue Apple Tablet aber erst Ende Mai in die Schweiz. Am 10. Mai wird Apple die Preise bekannt geben, gleichzeitig erwarten wir definitive 3G-Angebote von der Swisscom, Orange und Sunrise.

Ubuntu 10.04 steht zum Download bereit
Die Entwickler der Linux-Distribution Ubuntu haben gestern, nach einem in letzter Minute korrigierten Fehler im Bootmanager Grub2, planmäßig die finale Version 10.04 (Codename "Lucid Lynx", zu deutsch "leuchtender Luchs") freigegeben. Für nur 169 Dollar gibt es das Android Tablet bSocial von Matricom. Mit 7-Zoll Touchscreen, Android 1.6, 2GB Speicher und 600MHz, 128MB RAM, USB und WiFi bis g ist es natürlich alles andere als ein iPad Konkurrent, aber der Nachfolger für 239 Euro sieht offiziell genau so aus wie ein iPad und will mit zwei Prozessoren (einer 600Mhz einer 550 Mhz) schon mehr. Adobe CS5: Alle Demos zum Download bereit

Ein "Vorwand" ist es, sagt er, und Flash wäre in der Spezifikation "offen". Die geschichte mit den Drittentwicklern und Apples eigene Restriktionen seien sperrig und hätten nichts mit Technologie-Problemen zu tun. Das ist enttäuschend. Wir hatten uns irgendwie schon an dieses Buchkonzept mit Doppelscreen Namens Courier aus dem Hause Microsoft gewöhnt. Doch aus Redmond kommt jetzt die Absage. Frank Shaw Vizepräsident für Firmenkommunikation hat bestätigt. Schön war die Zeit mit dem Konzept, aber es wird nicht gebaut. Die Zweifel ob es wirklich jemals mehr war als ein paar Screens, können wir ausräumen. Filme bei iTunes Frankreich: Gutes Zeichen für iTunes Store CH?
Im französischen iTunes Store werden ab heute Filme angeboten. Ab sofort stehen somit französischen iTunes-Kunden etwa 1000 Film-Titel zum Kauf zur Verfügung. Je nach Alter der Filme sind die Preise pro Film bei 7.99, 9.99 oder 13.99 Euro angesiedelt (CHF 13.25, CHF 16.55 bzw. CHF 23.20).
Hierzulande müssen wir nach wie vor auf ein Film (und TV-Serien)-Angebot im iTunes Store warten. Da es in Deutschland bereits seit geraumer Zeit ein entsprechendes Angebot im deutschen iTunes Store gibt und nun auch ein französisches Angebot zur Verfügung steht, dürfte ein Angebot für den Schweizer iTunes-Store etwas näher gerückt sein. Als grosses Problem des Schweizer Marktes und vielleicht auch als ein Grund, weshalb es das Film- und TV-Serien-Angebot bisher nicht in den Schweizer iTunes Store geschafft haben könnte, gilt die Mehrsprachigkeit der Schweiz. IDC: Weltweiter Prozessormarkt wächst um 39 Prozent
Chiphersteller haben im ersten Quartal 2010 39 Prozent mehr Prozessoren abgesetzt als im Vorjahreszeitraum. Das geht aus einer Analyse des Marktforschungsunternehmens IDC hervor. VW rächt sich an China mit dem Bik.e Ersatzreifenersatzfahrradkonzept

In China haben auf der Automesse die Chinesen ja allen die Show mit ihren Elektroautos gestohlen. Jetzt will es VW wissen und kommt mit einem Elektrofahrrad. "Bik.e" heisst es, ist aber noch ein Konzept, und lässt sich so gut zusammenfalten, dass man es an den Platz für den Ersatzreifen packen kann. Im Auto lässt es sich auch aufladen, zu Huase sowieso. Mit immerhin 20 Kilometern mit einer vollen Ladung und 20Kmh Spitzengeschwindigkeit ist es allerdings nicht allzu flexibel und man sollte schon ein GPS mitnehmen um immer zu wissen ob man es - ohne Pedale - auch nach Hause schafft. Disney Research Laboratory an der ETH eröffnet
Disney eröffnete gestern offiziell das Disney Research Laboratory an der ETH in Zürich. Damit zieht Zürich mit Grössen wie Salt Lake City, einem der Ursprungsorte der Computer-Animation, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Burgank und Glendale sowie Emeryville in Kalifornien zusammen. Dort überall stehen sogenannte «Research Laboratories» von Disney und dort überall wird an der Zukunft der Computer-Annimation geforscht. Bereits seit 2008 partnert die ETH mit Pixar. Als Resultat ist bisher unter anderem ein hochauflösender 3D-Scanner entstanden, mit welchem man Gesichter in bisher ungekannter Qualität nachbilden kann.
«Disney Research» ist aus den Forschungsbegehren des PIXAR-Studios entstanden. Neben der Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh ist die ETH die einzige Universität, an der Disney ein Research Laboratory hat.

Erscheint die Starcraft 2 Beta für OS X in den nächsten Tagen?
Starcraft 2 dürfte auch unter Mac-Usern allseits bekannt sein. Der Vorgänger des Echtzeitstrategie-Spiels aus dem Hause Blizzard sorgt schon seit Jahren für aufregende Momente und spannende Matches. Seit einiger Zeit kommen mehr und mehr User in den Genuss, die Beta des nächsten RTS-Krachers anspielen zu dürfen. Einzig die Mac-Version lässt seit Monaten auf sich warten. Doch nun bewegt sich was: In Amerika ist es bereits möglich, die OS X-Version runterzuladen und Starcraft 2 auf dem Mac zu spielen. Wann die lokalisierte Version auch hierzulande zur Verfügung steht, wissen wir nicht, aber es kann nicht mehr lange dauern. Developer criticizes Apple for rejecting seal hunting app
A Newfoundland-based game designer, Matt Smyth, has criticized Apple for rejecting his iPhone app based on the traditional seal hunt in Eastern Canada, according to a CBC News report. Apple now the largest American phone maker
Apple has overtaken Motorola to become the single largest American phone manufacturer, according to the companies' own estimates. Motorola's drop to 8.5 million phones shipped this winter was enough for Apple, with 8.75 million iPhones, to claim the title. Volkswagen rolls out foldable 'Bik.e' electric bicycle concept
Well, it looks like it's the season for automakers to show off electric bicycle concepts, with Volkswagen now following Lexus' lead with its own "Bik.e" concept. iPhone prototype discoverer "regrets" not finding owner
The person who found an iPhone prototype in a Redwood City bar has been identified as 21-year-old local Brian Hogan, according to Wired. Canon EOS 60D to get 18MP sensor, near launch
Canon's long-expected EOS 50D replacement may finally be close to a launch if a rumor from a historically reliable source is true. The tip said on Wednesday that the camera, informally known as the 60D, would have an 18-megapixel CMOS sensor. It should also have unique feature that doesn't exist on any other Canon DSLR, but whether this would be GPS geotagging or another camera isn't known.

Apple passes Motorola, now the largest US phone maker

According to Forbes, Apple sold 8.8 million iPhones in the first quarter, while Motorola sold 8.5 million of their various mobile devices. ASUS Eee PC 1218 trades veil of secrecy for popular design award
Well, will you look at that. In its haste to proclaim itself winner of a 2010 Red Dot design award, ASUS has inadvertently or perhaps intentionally announced the brand-new netbook that received it -- the Eee PC 1218. She's a beaut, too, with a slim, one-piece aluminum shell that evokes the MacBook Air but still packs a substantial number of expansion ports. There aren't any hard specs quite yet, but the above shot shows it'll come with a webcam and chiclet keyboard, and in a second pic after the break we can make out three USB sockets, Ethernet, VGA, a pair of 3.5mm audio jacks and an HDMI port -- the last of which possibly suggests a dedicated GPU
