iPhone 3.1.3 undoes jailbreaking, unlocking efforts
The new iPhone 3.1.3 firmware wrecks any previous unlocking or jailbreaking efforts, warns the unofficial iPhone Dev Team. Both the PwnageTool and redsn0w tools are noted to be incompatible with v3.1.3, with the exception of the latter when jailbreaking a first-generation iPhone or Touch. Apple refutes 27-inch iMac production halt
An Apple spokesman has refuted suggestions that recent iMac shipping delays have been related to problems with the LCD panels. The supply interruptions were instead blamed on consumer demand that has exceeded expectations. Google's Nexus One get's multi-touch, Apple's patents be damned
Ever since Google's Android came on the scene, it hasn't had true multi-touch. A report by Venturebeat said that Apple had asked Google not to use multi-touch in its Android phones and Google had complied, rather than get into legal trouble.
Fast forward to today. Google has sent out an update to its Nexus One phones enabling multi-touch on Maps, the Chrome Browser, Gallery and other applications. Multi-touch will only be available on 2.0+ phones and the updates are coming throughout the week (assuming Droid is next here).

Canon intros MPEG-2 Full HD codec for future pro camera
Canon on Tuesday said it would be releasing an MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) file-based recording codec that would debut in an unannounced but upcoming professional video camera from the company. The MPEG-2 Codec would bring with it twice the color resolution of the HDV profile format and be compatible with industry-standard editing and processing software. The codec would also have 50Mbps data recording speeds.

Dyzplastic's authorized Android figurines not upgradeable, but guaranteed not to crash
Physically expressing the love that you feel for your Android-powered device can be difficult -- hugging and caressing the phone gets old after a while, truth be told. Good news, though: artist Andrew Bell has teamed up with Google to release a series of authorized Android robot figurines, starting with an initial run of 12 designs in blind boxes (collect 'em all!). New iPhone, iPod codenames surface in code
A new set of clues to Apple's future handhelds have been revealed today through a search of recent code. The iPhone 3.2 SDK used to write for the iPad includes references in the simulator's library to N89, a previously unknown device. Reportedly "trustworthy" contacts for Engadget claim the number is the codename for the next iPhone, just as the M68, N82 and N88 were the respective codenames for the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G and the 3GS.

In conflicting blog posts today, Adobe says/refutes that Flash is its future
Kevin Lynch, CTO of Adobe penned a post on Adobe's blog today defending Flash as a standard on the web for interactivity and video playing. Lynch comes to Adobe from Macromedia where he was Chief Software Architect and obviously has been with Flash longer than even Adobe in this case. Therefore it isn't surprising to hear him say that he doesn't believe HTML5 will replace Flash at anytime in the foreseeable future.
Adobe supports HTML and its evolution and we look forward to adding more capabilities to our software around HTML as it evolves. If HTML could reliably do everything Flash does that would certainly save us a lot of effort, but that does not appear to be coming to pass. Update 3.1.3 for iPhone and iPod Touch
The update 3.1.3 dedicated to iPhone and iPod Touch is now available. It is supposed to bring better indication for battery level on iPhone 3GS, fix bugs with some application opening issues and a problem faced only when using the kana Japanese keyboard.
It probably also changes some other details on which Apple does not want to further communicate.

Gameloft claims $25 million in 2009 App Store sales
French developer and publisher Gameloft generated $25 million off the App Store in 2009, according to the company's newly-released financial statement for the period. The figure represents a 231 percent increase year-over-year, and helped to push the company's mobile sales up by 12 percent. This in turn helped to boost the company's overall revenue, which was up 11 percent to about $170 million.

Zune HD drops $30-$40 at Amazon, Newegg
This looks like it may be more of a price war than an official price drop, but anyone in the market for a Zune HD may one to pay a visit to Amazon or Newegg fairly soon, as they're now both selling the device for what appears to be the lowest price yet. While there's no telling how long it'll last, you can now snag a black 16GB Zune HD for $189.99 ($30 off the MSRP), or a 32GB Platinum Zune HD for $249.99 (a discount of $40). Google adds multi-touch to Nexus One
Google today surprised Nexus One owners by adding multi-touch through an over-the-air update. The feature now turns on pinch-to-zoom in the web browser as well as in Maps and the photo gallery. It also supplies a fix for 3G reception issues on T-Mobile.

Apple refutes claim of 27-inch iMac halt in production
Using their preferred mouthpiece of late, Yukari Iwatani Kane of the Wall Street Journal, Apple today refuted the claims that they had stopped production of their 27-inch iMac.
An Apple spokesman said again this week that “the 27-inch iMac has been a huge hit with customers and we are working to increase supply to meet up with strong demand.” He added that production has continued while the company fixed the problems with flickering screens and yellow-tinted displays.
"Production has continued" isn't quite refuting the that the production might have been stopped or changed. Before Christmas, Apple had pushed out expected deliveries of the machines from a few days to three weeks which put them beyond the holiday delivery date.
Apple yesterday released its second firmware update to the machines since they were released late last year.

NVIDIA: GeForce GTX 470, 480 to be first Fermi chips
NVIDIA in a Twitter update has confirmed the names of the first two graphics chips based on its Fermi architecture. The GeForce GTX 470 and 480 should be the first to ship. Details of their performance weren't given, but the naming scheme positions them as top-end parts for gamers.

Sony may "reboot" PSP Go in face of poor sales
Sony may be close to holding a 'second launch' for the PSP Go to shore up its sales, a claimed leak indicates today. The gaming giant is supposedly unhappy with the slump in performance of the redesigned console and is gearing up for a second marketing campaign. Apple has pushed a new firmware update, v3.1.3, out to iPhone and iPod touch owners. The release is a minor one, fixing bugs rather than adding any substantial features. Citrix hat sein Handy-Konzept mit dem schönen Namen "Nirvana" reanimiert und kooperiert dabei mit den Mobil-GUI-Spezialisten der Open Kernel Labs. Das Konzept des Nirvana Phones soll dem ewigen Laptop-Geschleppe ein Ende bereiten, schlicht indem Desktop-Bildschirmgrößen unterstützt werden. Der Haken ist natürlich, dass man unterwegs einen freien Monitor finden muss und im Zweifelsfall auch noch eine Tastatur, obwohl es dafür ja schöne Falt- und Rolllösungen gibt. Microsoft says it's looking into laptop battery issues with Windows 7
We've already seen some evidence that suggests Windows 7 puts a particularly hard drain on at least some laptop and netbook batteries, and it looks like Microsoft has now heard enough complaints itself to open an investigation into the matter. Details are otherwise a bit light, but Microsoft is apparently looking into the issue in collaboration with its hardware partners, and says that the problem is likely related to the computers' BIOS, which Windows 7 relies on to determine if the battery needs to be replaced. Needless to say, there isn't much in the way of solutions in the meantime, and Microsoft isn't offering any indication as to when one might be forthcoming.

Apple, others named in probe of human rights in China
Apple is just one of 30 US corporations that have been asked for info on their human rights practices in China, Reuters reports. The requests are the work of the assistant US Senate majority leader, Dick Durbin, who cites Google as a standard for how American companies should behave when operating within China's communist regime. Google has threatened to end search censorship or even pull out of China altogether, following hacker intrusions on the Gmail accounts of human rights activists. It is widely suspected that the hackers have ties to the Chinese government.

New BlackBerry browser faster than Android, iPhone?
Research In Motion is planning to use its WebKit-based BlackBerry browser as a surprise weapon against Android phones and the iPhone, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said today in an investor note. He cites "sources" who say the browser has been delayed but that it will take advantage of the push nature of BlackBerry Internet Service to load sites much more quickly. Intel said to be cooking up DDR3-lovin' Atom N475 and Atom N455 CPUs
We've maintained that Intel's range of Atom chips were simply too weak to really love and adore the way a slab of silicon should be, but that's probably because of our infatuation with things like "overclocking" and "Core i7 Extremes." Whatever the case, it's beginning to look a wee bit better for the lineup, as Fudzilla has it that the company will be adding DDR3 memory support to the 1.83GHz N475 and 1.6GHz N455. Both of those chips are expected to maintain their current TDP ratings, and both are expected to launch in Q3 of this year. Nah, DDR3 compatibility won't make your next netbook scream or anything, but when we're talking Atoms, we'll take all the baby steps we can get.

Fujisoft hat einen drolligen und gleichzeitig nicht ganz ungelenkigen Roboter vorgestellt, der auf den dämlichen Namen "Palro" hört. Der humanoide Bot ist rund 40 Zentimeter hoch, er wiegt 1,7 Kilogramm, hat 20 Freiheitsgrade, 5 Mikros, Lautsprecher, Kamera, WiFi und jede Menge Sensoren. Unter der Haube sorgen derweil ein 1,6 GHz Intel Atom Prozessor, 1 GB RAM und 4 GB Speicher für Bot-Schläue, die mit Ubuntu organisiert ist. First-gen iPad design shows room for camera
The frame of the first-generation iPad is meant to hold a camera, even though no camera is present, a repair company observes. Mission: Repair says it has already received an initial shipment of spare iPad parts, ahead of the device's March release date. In examining the frame, technicians have noticed an unexpected slot which perfectly fits the camera module from a unibody MacBook, including components like the ambient light sensor.

JVC adds $500 flash-based HD camcorder
JVC today used the post-CES cycle to add a new HD camcorder to its mix. The Everio GZ-HM340 is one of JVC's least expensive video cameras to shoot widescreen 1080i while still using more compact and shockproof flash memory instead of a hard drive. It brings 16GB of built-in flash memory and has an SDHC card slot to add as much as 32GB more; the included storage gives it room for about 1 hour 20 minutes of full bitrate AVCHD (H.264) footage.

Fujisoft's PALRO humanoid robot in the running to be our new best bud
Fujisoft's recently taken the wraps off its latest companion bot, and they call this one PALRO. PALRO's 39 centimeters tall (just over a foot), and boasts a 1.6GHz CPU Intel Atom CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of flash memory, a 3 MP camera, Wi-Fi, 802.11 b/g/n, and a lithium ion battery to top it all off. He's also equipped with a 3 megapixel webcam, but don't worry -- his specs don't make him unapproachable. As you'll see in the video which is after the break, PALRO's probably the kind of guy that you could spend a lot of time with but see for yourself. Six-core Mac Pro may arrive by early March
Talk of a Mac Pro with six-core Xeons gained support Tuesday with rumors that Apple could launch the workstation ahead of Intel's own news. Der Wurm Conficker hat das Polizei-Netzwerk der englischen Stadt Manchester befallen. Um eine Ausbreitung zu vermeiden, mussten sämtliche Rechner nach der Entdeckung am Freitagabend von der Außenwelt abgetrennt werden. Los gehts mit dem Bild oben: ein Screengrab aus dem Video von der Vorstellung letzter Woche und zwar bei neun Minuten und neun Sekunden. Sieht schon nach einer iSight Kamera aus, oder? Nur dass das iPad ja eigentlich keine hat. Briten starten Petition gegen Internet Explorer 6
Britische Bürger haben eine Petition gestartet, die ihre Regierung dazu bringen soll, den Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) aufzugeben. "Die Unterzeichner bitten den Premierminister, Regierungseinrichtungen zu einem Upgrade von Internet Explorer 6 zu ermutigen", heißt es darin. Nur Briten und Personen mit Wohnsitz in Großbritannien können unterzeichnen. Nach etwa 24 Stunden haben dies allerdings erst gut 60 Bürger getan.

iPad Keynote: Hatte Steve Jobs iPad bereits eine iSight?
Wer sich das Video der Keynote genauer ansieht, der könnte auf die Idee kommen, dass Steve Jobs iPad bereits eine integrierte iSight Kamera hatte.
Neben diesem Indiz gibt es weitere Anzeigen, die eine iSight in dem iPad bekräftigen. So wurden in dem neuen iPhone OS 3.2 Beta SDK bereits APIs gefunden, die mit einer iSight kommunizieren können. Auch der SDK Simulator des iPads spricht diese API an. Dies könnte implizieren, dass nicht nur das iPad eine iSight spendiert bekommt, sondern eventuell auch die nächste iPhone Generation.
Ob das iPad mit integrierter iSight Kamera noch in der ersten Version kommen wird, ist unklar. Vielleicht haben wir Glück und Apple wird kurz vor Auslieferungsbeginn noch eine Pressemeldung bringen, in welcher verkündet wird, dass das iPad eine iSight spendiert bekommt. Nvidia GF100 war der bisherige Name von Nvidias erster DirectX-11-GPU, die gegen die Radeon-HD-5000-Serie von ATi antreten wird. Neues Update gegen Display Flimmern beim 27″ iMac
Wie bereits vor einigen Tagen angekündigt, bietet Apple erneut ein Firmware-Update gegen das lästige Display Flackern, nachdem erstere Versuche eher scheiterten.

Globale Halbleiterbranche verzeichnet 2009 Umsatzrückgang
Die Halbleiterindustrie hat laut aktuellen Zahlen der Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) im abgelaufenen Jahr einen Umsatzrückgang hinnehmen müssen. Gegenüber dem Vorjahr sanken die Einnahmen demnach um neun Prozent von 248,6 Milliarden Dollar (178,5 Milliarden Euro) auf 226,3 Milliarden Dollar (162,5 Milliarden Euro). Browsermarkt: Chrome gewinnt Anteile von Firefox und IE
Laut aktuellen Zahlen von Net Applications hat Chrome im Januar seinen Anteil am Browsermarkt gegenüber dem Vormonat von 4,6 Prozent auf 5,2 Prozent ausgebaut. Der iPad erfordert laut Ansicht des Interessenverbandes der deutschen iPhone-Entwickler (vieda) die Portierung "aller bestehender iPhone Apps" für diese Plattform. Im vieda haben sich bislang 80 App-Programmierer zusammengeschlossen. Nach der Ankündigung des Apple iPads hat vieda sofort ein Stimmungsbild unter seinen Mitgliedern erhoben. Klares Ergebnis: Die vieda-Entwickler begrüßen die Einführung des neuen Geräts, sehen aber die Notwendigkeit, bestehende Apps an die Plattform iPad anzupassen. Ein reines Übernehmen bestehender für das iPhone programmierter "Legacy" Apps macht in ihren Augen keinen Sinn.
Apple hat verkündet, dass sich die bestehenden Apps aus dem App Store auch auf der neuen Gerätefamilie nutzen lassen. Sophos: Spam und Malware in sozialen Netzen nehmen um 70 Prozent zu
Sophos hat in den vergangenen zwölf Monaten eine deutliche Zunahme von Spam und Malware in sozialen Netzen registriert. Der Anteil der Nutzer, der über ein Social Network Spam-Nachrichten empfangen hat, ist um 70,6 Prozent auf insgesamt 57 Prozent gestiegen. Dell is serious about its thin and light class of machines judging by its ability to churn out these lovelie lappies from its Adamo design studio. Today we've got the Latitude 13. Oh sure, it looks almost exactly like the Vostro v13 for small businesses but this is Latitude brother, Dell's mainstream business brand. As such, it comes fully IT-ified with a preinstalled Citrix client, easier virtualization options, and baked in know-how for system image and software updates distrtibution. So it's not really now, but it's still "the world's thinnest 13-inch commercial client laptop," according to Dell and that's gotta be worth a second look when it begins shipping in a few weeks.

And here we have it: what's likely to be the world's first Bluetooth 3.0 phone courtesy of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). According to the filing's description, the "compact and slim" Samsung GT-S8500 is a touchscreen slate phone with a "high resolution" 3.1-inch OLED sporting a TouchWIZ UI and quad-band GSM/EDGE radios. The advantages of the 3.0 Bluetooth spec approved in April are faster throughput (up to 24Mbps) and more frugal power usage -- both welcome advances in modern media-playing handsets. Although it's not stated we can assume an official launch in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress.

Nehalem CPUs to Be Outdated "Soon"...
It has now been 11 months that the first hardware model based on Nehamen CPU has been released. IT was a Mac Pro, and it took about 8 months to have the Nehalem desktop CPU, Core i5 and i7 to find their ways in iMacs (with the known issues) while we are still waiting for their arrival in MacBook and MacBook Pro models.On Intel roadmap, the Nehalem life cycle is getting to the end, and the new name to be in your mind should be Sandy Bridge, as this is the new CPU architecture to be released for Q1 2011. They are currently not that much information about it, despite the fact that communication between cores as well as integration of graphical chipset would be further strengthen and improved, leading to a better energy efficiency and performance.
This is not so much surprising if we consider that Intel continues to apply a usual life cycle rule for its roadmap: a new CPU architecture every 2 years, sequentially released with thinner engraving process for transistors.

Hexacore Xeon-based Mac Pro Soon !?
It has been quite some time that we know specifications and availability date of the new Intel hexacore Xeon. We already have indicated that it should find its way in a future revision of Mac Pro to replace the current 32 nm engraved Quad Core Xeon. The name of this hexacore CPU is now know, Core i7-980X, another cheaper (and slower) model should also be available, Core i7-970. According to difference sources, this new CPU should become available in March. So, if Apple and Intel are still engaged in a tight partnership, Apple might have the exclusivity of such CPU (as for the Nehalem Xeon) for a couple of days or weeks. So, if you are waiting for new Mac Pro to change your current model or purchase your first Mac Pro, then get ready after the second-half of February, it should come within the next three weeks. If we look at Apple's history, we should also have then new Mac edition graphic cards released at the same time, the much anticipated and expected RAdeon HD 5870.

Samsung Unveils 30 nm Engraved DDR3 Memory Chips
If manufacturers of consumer grade RAM chips have been facing serious problems during the economic slow down, the main players in the field have pushed R&D Labs to accelerate developments of some technologies to be ready to come up with new products as soon as the global economy would have recovered. The main goal being to engrave RAM chips thinner in order to product more units on the same wafer, and consequently reducing production cost.
Samsung just announced first DDR3 memory chips engraved at 30 nm. With such process in place, power consumption of such chips should decrease by 30% when compared to chips engraved at 50 nm. According to the manufacturer, the yield at 30 nm is higher than at 40 nm, now around 60%.
Such chips should be produced "en masse

iPad has camera holes?
Two interesting pictures have crossed our desks today. First we got a still image of Steve Jobs showing off the iPad with what looks like a small camera type hole on it. I was at the event and the iPads I played with didn't have holes for iPads (I really looked closely). I wasn't close enough (Apple employees were the first 10 rows) to see the one Jobs was using either, but from other professional photos of the event, there wasn't a camera on that iPad.
That being said, would it surprise anyone if Apple came in late and put in a camera on the high-end models? Maybe the $130 extra for a 3G radio also includes a camera in the bargain? Note that Apple didn't reveal the glass screen on the iPhone until 5 months after the initial announcement.

Microsoft is allegedly set to unveil the "Zune Phone" later this month at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, according to the Spanish blog MuyComputer. MSI Wind Box DE220 displayed and detailed
In all the CES madness, we somehow missed MSI's previously-teased Wind Box DE220. Fortunately, Liliputing didn't; the site's just now putting up impressions and along with it some specs of the novel-sized nettop. It's packing Pinetrail for starters, in the form of a single-core Atom D410 or dual-core D510. Also included are an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330, up to 1TB HDD / 4GB memory, 802.11b/g/n, and Windows 7 home premium. Mum's the word on price or release date, but from what we've seen, you can at least start decorating around its known color options: blue, red, and black.

Amid lots of words of bet hedging, MG Siegler manages to mention that he's heard from second hand sources that Apple is planning a bigger, Mac-based tablet launch within a year, perhaps as early as WWDC. The "MacPad" in question would be running an Intel Atom chip (the one that Apple's MacOS kernal no longer supports as of 10.6.2) and would come in a screen as big as 15-inches, according to Siegler.
We are more inclined to believe the 22-inch touch iMac story from Chinese-language Commercial Times reported earlier this year. This would probably be similar to the current iMac with a capacitive touch screen which could sit on an angle similar to a draftsman's table. It would run a special touch-enabled version of MacOS 10.7 (which we've seen running around our logs) and run on high end Intel portable hardware.

Canon Rebel T2i to show next week?
Canon is allegedly ready to launch a new Rebel DSLR, the T2i, sometime next week, according to Canon Rumors. The unconfirmed report, coming from an unnamed source who is said to have previously provided accurate information, claims the device will offer a new LCD with even higher resolution, along with selectable FPS settings for video capture.

Apple working on Mac OS X-based tablet?
Although the iPad has yet to ship, a potentially significant rumor Monday night has Apple already developing a more advanced model. Supposedly corroborated between sources, the new model would be much larger and more likely run software much more like Mac OS X, not iPhone OS. If true, the system would be ready within a year.

Acer not making a tablet, will focus on ultra-thin laptops
We're sort of loving Acer's new bad-boy vibe -- not only have company execs recently gone on record saying that US PC manufacturers will be dead within 20 years and that the "change the Microsoft-Intel environment" but now they're standing firm while everyone else races to do a tablet. At least that's the word from Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin, who told Digitimes that while Acer can certainly produce a tablet device, it doesn't fit into the company's business model. What's more, he doubts that other companies can simply copy Apple's hardware
