Wiimote-controlled 'Jazari' robot percussion takes us back to our tribal, Nintendo-hacking roots

We've seen the hacker-friendly, Bluetooth-based Wiimote used for so many purposes by now that it's hard to get excited about just any amalgamation of accelerometer-based fun. Patrick Flanagan's 'Jazari' project breaks past the yawn factor with a veritable museum's worth of robotic instruments, which are all controlled from a pair of Wiimotes and some rather intelligent software. It all seems a little too complicated to be live-controlled, but as Patrick himself explains in true music nerd detail, there's pretty much a button or a twist or a tilt behind every bit of the wild djembe, bongo and cowbell stylings that make up Jazari's "steamfunk" (his term) music. iPad pre-orders to start next week?

Apple might start taking pre-orders for the iPad as soon as next week, one rumor claims today. A supposedly reliable source says orders would start "as soon as" February 25th, or about a month before the projected late March target for shipping. AppAdvice hears these would be limited to US buyers and would only apply to Wi-Fi models, as 3G versions officially ship a month later.

AppAdvice is forecasting that iPad pre-orders will begin on February 25th in the US-only for Wifi iPads.  Their sources vaguely says: According to a reliable source of ours familiar with the matter, Apple will be starting the presale of the iPad as soon as February 25th. Apple has traditionally launched its new iPhones and iPods on Fridays, both without pre-orders recently (though AT&T has offered pre-orders on iPhones).  Norwegian Apple resellers recently had to stop taking unofficial pre-orders because of overwhelming demand.

Nokia X10 Symbian S^3 QWERTY slider revealed in leaked documentation?

Some supposed Nokia X10 "release documents" have been caught on video and are now making their presumably illicit way around the web. Of course, this would be pretty trivial to fake, so do please put on your skepticism pants before reading further. The docs detail a QWERTY sliders handset dubbed the X10, a seeming followup to Nokia's capacitive-equipped X6, but which runs Symbian S^3. iPad's mystery key….

@AACDuke writes in asking what that mystery key above the '6' is on Apple's keyboard.  The iPad doesn't use function keys like the Mac/PC so there isn't a backup 'function' like on keyboards we're used to.  The easiest/simplest/most likely idea is that it is just there for aesthetic reasons, like the dummy screw on earlier MacBooks. But it seems a little silly, even for Apple, to build a key with absolutely no purpose.  From a technology perspective they've likely taken the same internals from their aluminum keyboards, meaning it is a live key.  So what do you think that key will do?  Will it be unveiled sometime later

These things are a dime a dozen, sure, but you can't fault Gear4 for trying. In fact, it has managed to create something that's marginally unique in a world full of me-toos, as the SmartDock relies on hardware and software aspects in order to shine. At first blush, the actual dock isn't much to look at, but the bundled app enables you to search through stations using the iPhone's touchscreen and pause / rewind at will. You can also sync the alarm clock to play through the dock's speakers, and it'll work just fine on the iPod touch. We certainly wish a remote would've been thrown in for good measure, but hopefully the whole package will be cheap enough to make us overlook the omission.

Oberlandesgericht München bremst PC-Abgabe durch einstweilige Verfügung

Wie ZDNet erfuhr, hat das Oberlandesgericht München am Freitag auf Betreiben des Zentralverbandes Informationstechnik und Computerindustrie (ZITCO) eine einstweilige Verfügung gegen die Zentralstelle für private Überspielrechte (ZPÜ) erlassen. Darin wird es dieser unter Androhung eines Ordnungsgeldes bis zu 250.000 Euro oder Ordnungshaft zunächst untersagt, "in Anwendung der Paragrafen 13 und 13a des Urheberrechtswahrnehmungsgesetz einen Tarif für die Abgabe auf Personal Computer nach Paragraf 54 und 54a Urheberrechtsgesetz aufzustellen und/oder in dem Bundesanzeiger zu veröffentlichen." Genau das hatte die ZPÜ aber vor.

Eine Anwendung namens "drive app" zusammen mit der als Sonderzubehör erhältlichen Halterung "smart cradle" sollen das iPhone zu einer multimedialen Headunit mit allen wichtigen Cockpit-Funktionen machen: Telefonieren über Freisprechanlage, eigenes Musikrepertoire und Internetradio sowie Navigationsgerät. Hinzu kommen kleine Extras wie der Car Finder, der immer wieder zum geparkten Auto zurückführt. Smart will sowohl die App wie auch das "smart cradle" diesen Sommer auf den Markt bringen. Die Halterung mit integriertem Mikrofon lädt das iPhone und funktioniert gleichzeitig als Freisprechanlage, die zur Tonwiedergabe die Lautsprecher des smart Radios nutzt und es bei Anrufen automatisch stumm schaltet. Apple hat die MobileMe-Startseite für die Anzeige auf einem iPhone, iPod touch und wohl auch iPad optimiert. Fortan finden sich dort neben dem Verweis auf Anleitungen zum Einrichten des E-Mail-Kontos und der Synchronisierung von Kontakten und Kalenderdaten auch die Links zu den kostenlosen iDisk- und Gallery-Apps und der Menüpunkt "Find my iPhone". Die letztgenannte Funktion ermöglicht es nun auch, ein verlorenes iPhone vom iPod touch, dem iPhone eines Freundes sowie demnächst auch von einem iPad aus aufzuspüren. Nach der Ortung wird die Position des abhanden gekommenen Geräts auf einer Karte angezeigt. Zudem besteht die Möglichkeit, darauf eine Nachricht anzuzeigen, ein Tonsignal abzuspielen sowie das iPhone komplett zu sperren oder gar zu löschen. iPod touch-Besitzer, die Probleme bei der Offline-Nutzung von Apples MobileMe iDisk-App hatten, seien auf das Update auf Version 1.1.1 hingewiesen. Laut Beschreibung wird damit ein Problem behoben, welches das Betrachten von Dokumenten im Offline-Modus verhinderte. Zudem verbessert das Update die Stabilität der Anwendung. MobileMe ist ein kostenpflichtes Angebot von Apple. Typing 'cadence' used to identify authorized database users, lock everyone else out

We'll admit to having shared a few login credentials amongst friends here and there in our younger days, but it sounds like the party might soon be over: a company called Scout Analytics has developed a way of identifying a user's "typing cadence," and matching it to how a username and password are entered. It only takes 5 login attempts of around 12 characters for Scout to nab your cadence, and although 1 in 20,000 people will share the same cadence, combining the data with browser info and IP addresses makes it accurate enough for general usage. No word on what sites are using this technique, but we won't be surprised if it starts popping up rapidly -- and sniffing typing cadence

Google gains clearance to buy and sell energy, continue taking over the world

What Google wants, it largely gets. Need some proof of that? Fret not, as we've got plenty right here. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) just granted the internet behemoth authority to "buy and sell electricity in bulk like any other utility." As of now, it doesn't look like Google is jonesing to take on your local power provider, but rather to open up more avenues for acquiring power for its own good. Company spokeswoman Niki Fenwick noted that this filing was made so Google could have "more flexibility in procuring power for Google's own operations, including our data centers." That quote lines up with what we heard when this initiative was

OCZ's Vertex Limited Edition SSD: $399 for best-in-class write speeds, only 5,000 available

Here's an interesting one. OCZ is essentially retailing the never-made-it-to-market Vertex 2 Pro as the Vertex Limited Edition. It runs the SandForce SF-1500 controller, which the Vertex 2 Pro put to such stunning good use in its prototype form, but unfortunately that controller proved to complex and costly for OCZ to mass retail the drive. Instead it's offering the Vertex Limited Edition, 5,000 drives sporting the superfast controller. The drives come in 100GB ($399) and 200GB ($829) flavors, and once they're gone they're gone. It's a better performing drive (particularly on writes) than the similarly priced Intel X25-M G

Frictional Games, the developer behind Penumbra, has released a teaser video previewing the upcoming game, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The first-person horror game centers around survival and enduring a nightmare. Players take the role of Daniel as he awakens in a desolate castle, suffering from amnesia and experiencing terrible memories. Daniel must explore the castle and stay alive by hiding, running, or using his ingenuity.

Archos said to have two new Android tablets on track for CeBIT

We've already seen a whole slew of Archos renders leak ahead of CeBIT, and it looks like the company itself has now confirmed that it'll have at least two new devices on hand at the show. Details are still pretty light, of course, but the company's German PR firm has reportedly said that Archos will debut two new "low-cost" Android tablets that are "specifically designed for use at home." One of those is rumored to be a new Archos 7 tablet, while the other remains a bit of a mystery -- although the combination of "low-cost" and "home use" seems to suggest that 3G might be out of the question for either of
