Sperrt Google Apples “iPad” in Bildersuche?
Wer in Google’s Bildersuche den Begriff “iPad” eingibt, der bekommt kein Apple iPad zu sehen.
Google scheint absichtlich die Bilder zu Apples neuem Gerät zu sperren, denn unter jedem anderen Begriff, selbst schon dem heute erschienenen “Aperture 3″ kommen direkt Bilder der Verpackung der neuen Software.

Real to split off Rhapsody as separate company
RealNetworks in a surprise move tonight broke off Rhapsody as a separate company. The move has the blessing of Real's partner in the venture, Viacom, and will transfer all the rights to Rhapsody so that its streaming and download music services remain intact. Real will also inject $18 million in cash and promises that Rhapsody will be independent, with no one else holding a majority stake.

GeeksPhone One lands in France for a hands-on
Plenty of other Android phones have come and gone since the GeeksPhone One was announced way back in July of last year, but the phone is now finally available in Europe, and the folks at Android France have managed to get their hands on what seems to be one of the first ones. Notion Ink Adam tablet to get Flash, outlast iPad battery
Initial impressions of a prototype Adam tablet from Notion Ink, first announced late last year, show that the device has some significant advantages over competitors such as the iPad. Powered by the new NVIDIA Tegra chipset and using a low-power display from Pixel Qi, the pre-production Adam is said to last at least two to three times longer than the 10-hour battery life for the iPad when browsing the web using Wi-Fi or watching video, according to Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan.

Belkin intros redesigned notebook cooling pad
Belkin on Tuesday announced it has redesigned its Laptop Cooling Pad to now include a unique AirFlow Wing shape that is more efficient at taking heat away from the computer and a user's lap. Headwinds favoring extended AT&T iPhone exclusivity?
Several analysts have expressed conflicting views on AT&T's iPhone exclusivity, and whether or not it will end in 2010 or be extended another year. Craig Moffett of Bernstein Research has raised his Verizon rating from Underperform to Neutral, in part because there may be little future for AT&T even if Verizon does not get the US iPhone. AT&T's growth will "sputter" without the iPhone as a guaranteed draw, says Moffett.

Elecom releases one of the first SDXC card readers
Japan's Elecom has launched two new memory card readers with support for SDXC memory cards. The MR-A001BK is a USB thumb reader that can also read nine other types of memory cards, including SD Pro High speed cards. The MR-A002 reader is larger and attaches using a USB cable. It sort of blows our mind that OpenMoko has managed to sell more than a smattering of its $99 WikiReaders (you know, considering just how limited in scope this thing is), but evidently there's a huge demand out there for improvements. Fraunhofer details MPEG Surround for handhelds
Best known for its work on the MP3 format, Fraunhofer this afternoon said it would use Mobile World Congress next week to formally roll out two new audio formats specially designed for mobile. MPEG Surround can produce as much as 7.2-channel surround sound but has no real effect on the bitrate versus a stereo mix. A smartphone or a networked media hub using MPEG Surround can get the full audio of a movie without needing more space or a faster network connection.

Warner CEO: iTunes price increase led to lower sales, recession might also factor in
Don't pat yourself on the back too much for calling this one, but Warner CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. has now confirmed what many have suspected: higher iTunes pricing has led to slightly slower sales. BlackBerry Curve trumps iPhone, Droid as tops in US
IDC as part of a wave of mobile market share updates has again given the crown to the BlackBerry Curve as the top selling smartphone in the US. Despite the line's relative age, it outsold both the second-place iPhone and third-place Motorola Droid during the fall and was joined in the top ten by four other models: the Pearl, Bold, Storm and Tour occupied the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth place spots respectively. Intel to add 1.33GHz ULV Core i7 this summer?
An unofficial report has Intel releasing a new ultra-low voltage Core i7 CPU this summer, the 660UM. The dual-core chip would produce a 1.33GHz clock speed but ramp up to 2.4GHz speeds when overclocked in Turbo Boost. When it arrives, it should supercede the 1.2GHz Core i7 640UM, support the same 800MHz DDR3 memory and consume the same 18W of total power as the slower model.

Google just announced that it's bringing some serious location-based integration to its services, all centered around the new Buzz social networking tool built into Gmail. Google's going to do location better than the usual latitude / longitude coordinates -- it's able to snap those to actual place names and then take context-aware actions depending on where you are. Norwegian shops overwhelmed by iPad pre-orders
Apple is facing the rare incident of an advance sellout this week as a number of Norwegian resellers have had to stop their pre-order programs for the iPad. Eplehuset (Apple House) has told its customers that "crazy interest" has led it to stop sales in advance. Apple acknowledging, investigating Mac Pro problems?
Apple has recognized and is now probing a critical problem affecting the Mac Pro, sources claim. Some Nehalem-based systems have experienced massive increases in CPU power consumption while playing audio, which are worsened by leaps in heat levels, and performance drops as high as 20 percent. In spite of these changes, the CPU usage does not register in Activity Monitor, and fans fail to kick in at proper levels.

TI makes single chip with Bluetooth, FM, GPS and Wi-Fi
Texas Instruments this morning brought out the WiLink 7, a design it says is the first to include four types of wireless on a single chip. It combines Bluetooth, an FM transceiver, GPS and 802.11n Wi-Fi into a single design and lets phone designers cut down on the size and energy needed. The creator estimates that it takes up half as much space as a normal multi-chip approach but also 30 percent less power.

Der Mobile World Congress (MWC) rückt mit Riesenschritten näher und Texas Instruments hat sich da wohl so einiges vorgenommen. Heute haben sie ihren WiLink 7.0-Chip in 65-Nanometer Bauweise vorgestellt, der 802.11n, GPS, FM Sender und Empfänger sowie Bluetooth zu bieten hat und laut TI der erste seiner Art ist. Das Teil soll die Kosten um 30 Prozent und die Größe um 50 Prozent verringern und bereits bei einigen nicht namentlich erwähnten OEMs sein, so dass wir zur MWC durchaus den einen oder anderen Phone-Prototypen damit zu sehen bekommen dürften.

Warner sees stalled digital music after variable iTunes
Warner Music Group during its fiscal results call today acknowledged that its digital music sales have slowed since it helped push for variable pricing on iTunes last year. In the fall, the company's digital sales equivalent to whole albums grew about 5 percent compared to late 2008 where it grew 10 percent over this past summer and 11 percent in the spring. Absolute digital revenue followed a similar pattern as the income grew 8 percent year-over-year in late 2009, but less than half the 20 percent from the end of 2008.

Samsung TicToc PMP player lets you shake right past that Ke$ha song
Back at CES Samsung apparently unveiled this little guy -- the TicToc PMP, which seems to be aiming firmly at the iPod shuffle demographic -- whatever demographic that is. This little bad boy's got just one physical button (for power and volume control) while other functions of the player -- playback, skipping past songs and the like -- are all controlled by shaking. The TicToc will come in 2GB and 4GB varieties, have a supposed battery life of up to 12 hours, and it'll also have a cute little docking station to go with it. There's no pricing information yet, but we hear it'll definitely be available later this year. There's one more shot after the break.

Heads-up, kids -- Mobile World Congress is but days away from liftoff, and it looks like Texas Instruments will be there with a purpose. The company has today introduced what it's calling the "industry's first quad-radio single chip," which throws 802.11n, GPS, FM transmit / receive and Bluetooth radios onto a single 65-nanometer WiLink 7.0 solution. Purportedly, this device reduces costs by 30 percent, size by 50 percent and bragging rights by 894 percent. ComScore: Windows Mobile verliert weiter Marktanteile

The program is now 64-bit only, and has also been upgraded with several new features, most notably Brushes and Adjustment Presets. Adobe limits Flash for Android to 2.1, criticizes Apple
Adobe today provided a disappointment for some Android users as it revealed that Flash 10.1 will only be available for phones running Android 2.1 or later. Ericsson, Netgear team on 3G/Wi-Fi router
Netgear on Tuesday made an unusual branch into 3G this morning through teamwork with Ericsson. The MBRN3300 can use an internal 3G modem, including HSPA+ at roughly 20Mbps, and share the link through either 802.11n Wi-Fi or through four 100Mbps Ethernet ports. The companies envision it as a modem for homes where regular cable, DSL or fiber isn't available, or for completely mobile local networks; it even has the option of a car charger or a battery pack to run free of a traditional plug.

Brando camera holster is cheap, might actually hold your camera
Say what you will about Brando, but you can always count on them to take a good idea and sell a cheaper (if not necessarily better) version of it. The latest example is the discount retailer's Camera Waist Belt Lock, which is basically a $14 version of the $110 Spider Camera Holster that we checked out first hand a few months back. Weitere iPad Kamera-Gerüchte
Die Diskussion kam quasi zeitgleich mit der Präsentation des iPad ins Rollen: Warum hat Apple keine Kamera in das Gerät integriert? Das iPad würde sich zumindest in den Augen vieler potenzieller Käufer doch perfekt für Videochats eignen. Gerüchteweise besitzt das iPad-Gehäuse sogar schon eine passende Aussparung, demnach hätte Apple die Kamera entweder in letzter Minute zurückgezogen (kennen wir doch irgendwo her) oder will - eher unwahrscheinlich - zum Verkaufsstart damit überraschen.

Mit der ATI Radeon HD 5570 hat AMD eine abgespeckte Low-Profile-Variante seiner DirectX-11-Grafikkarte ATI Radeon HD 5670 vorgestellt. Adobe entschuldigt sich wegen nicht behobenen Absturz-Fehler im Flash-Player
In einem Blog-Eintrag hat sich Adobe dafür entschuldigt, einen Fehler im Flash-Player erst sehr spät beachtet zu haben. Der Fehler führt dazu, dass es beim Neuladen einer URL zu einem Absturz im Flash Player und schließlich auch im Web-Browser kommt. Apple zensiert Hinweise auf Android-Versionen
Ein App-Entwickler hat in der Produktbeschreibung seiner Anwendung einen Hinweis auf eine ebenfalls existierende Android-Version angegeben. Apple forderte ihn per Mail auf, dies zurückzuziehen.
Zu diesem Thema hat sich der Entwickler von Flash of Genius auf seinem Blog ausführlich erklärt. In Form von einer E-Mail habe Apple ihm mitgeteilt, dass in den Releasenotes irrelevante und unpassende "Plattform-Informationen" enthalten sind. Konkret meinte Apple damit den Hinweis "Finalist in Google's Android Developer's Challenge!" (ADC).
Bekanntlich klopfen die iTunes Review Teams des App Store dort zum Review eingestellte Apps nach zahlreichen - nicht immer nachvollziehbaren - Kriterien ab. Der App "Flash of Genius" hat Apple konkret keine Absage erteilt, sondern den Entwickler lediglich aufgefordert, die unliebsame Passage in den Releasenotes zu entfernen. Uni-Administrator erpresst raubkopierende Studenten
Ein 37-jähriger Sicherheitsfachmann, der für die amerikanische University of Georgia arbeitete, ist wegen Erpressung verhaftet worden. Wie der Athens Banner-Herold berichtet, hatte er die Aufgabe, illegale Filesharing-Aktivitäten an der Universität aufzuspüren und zu unterbinden. Sanwa Newtec hat einen Drucker vorgestellt, der ohne Farbe und Papier auskommt: Das Modell PrePeat nutzt nämlich wiederbeschreibbares Spezialpapier aus PET, das angeblich bis zu tausendmal wiederverwendet werden kann. Die prinzipiell feine, wenn auch nicht superneue Idee hat aber leider einen Preishaken. Denn neben den gut 4.000 Euro für den Drucker werden pro Blatt des Spezialpapiers noch einmal 2,44 Euro fällig - in der Packung mit 1.000 Stück, was dann praktisch noch mal mit 2.440 Euro zu Buche schlägt und den Anschaffungspreis auf 6.440 Euro katapultiert. Apple schränkt ortsbezogene Werbung a.d. iPhone ein
Viele Entwickler finanzieren ihre kostenlosen iPhone-Anwendungen durch Anzeigen. Apple schränkt diese Möglichkeit jetzt ein. Wer den aktuellen Standort des iPhone-Benutzers verwendet, darf dies in Zukunft nur noch für nützliche ("beneficial") Zwecke tun. Anwendungen, die ortsbezogene Informationen vorrangig für das Ausliefern von Anzeigen benutzen - soweit für Apple erkennbar -, sollen im iTunes Review-Prozess aussortiert werden.
Apple hat vor kurzem für 275 Millionen US-Dollar die Firma Quattro übernommen, die auf das mobile Anzeigengeschäft spezialisiert ist. Einige iPhone-Kenner vermuten deshalb, dass das jetzige Verbot der erste Schritt in Richtung auf einen von Apple selbst betriebenen mobilen Werbedienst ist.

TK-Größen kehren auf die CeBIT zurück
Der Hightech-Verband BITKOM bringt eine Reihe großer Telekommunikationsunternehmen wieder auf die CeBIT. Branchengrößen wie Alcatel-Lucent, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks, Siemens Enterprise Communications, Versatel oder Vodafone stellen in Hannover im Rahmen der BITKOM Broadband World aus. Ericsson, Eutelsat, Motorola und Siemens Enterprise Communications Group kehren damit nach vorheriger CeBIT-Abstinenz zurück auf die Messe. Diese Messe in der Messe zum Thema Breitband richtet der BITKOM mit dem Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi) erstmals auf der CeBIT aus. By now you're undoubtedly aware than Samsung has a new smartphone OS (Bada) and touchscreen technology (Super AMOLED) in the works. In this case, putting 2 and 2 together yields 14, a number that matches Samsung's February 14th press event at Mobile World Congress. How so? Filmbranche meldet 2009 Rekordumsatz mit DVDs und Blu-rays
Der Bundesverband Audiovisuelle Medien (BVV) meldet in seiner Jahresbilanz 2009 Rekordzahlen im Geschäft mit Bildtonträgern. Insgesamt wurden nach den Zahlen des Verbandes 112,8 Millionen Bildtonträger verkauft, neun Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr. Der DVD-Absatz legte um fünf Prozent auf 106,5 Millionen Stück zu. Die Zahl der verkauften Blu-ray-Discs kletterte 2009 auf 6,2 Millionen Stück. 2008 waren es noch 1,7 Millionen gewesen.

Studie: Ads auf Nachrichtenwebsites wirken besser
Werbung auf Nachrichtenwebsites schneidet bei den Nutzern in Sachen Seriosität und Glaubwürdigkeit besonders gut ab und erzielt damit eine höhere Wirkung als Werbung im Internet allgemein. Dies hat jedenfalls die aktuelle Innofact-Gattungsstudie "Werbewirkung auf Nachrichtenwebsites" ergeben, die der nationale Onlinevermarkter OMS in Auftrag gegeben hat. Im Rahmen dieser Studie wurden mehr als 4.000 Internetnutzer zu ihren Nutzungsgewohnheiten und ihrer Werbewahrnehmung befragt. Onlinewerbung wirkt demnach auf Nachrichtenwebsites um über 80 Prozent seriöser und um rund 60 Prozent glaubwürdiger als auf anderen Websites.
Grundsätzlich stehen Besucher von Nachrichtenwebsites der hier geschalteten Onlinewerbung aufgeschlossener gegenüber als Nutzer von anderen Websites der dortigen Werbung. Forscher stellen SSD-on-a-Chip vor
Forscher der Keio Universität in Japan haben auf der ISSCC (International Solid State Circuits Conference) einen SSD-Chip vorgestellt. Freenet steigert Jahresumsatz auf 3,65 Milliarden Euro

Festnetz- und Mobiltelefon-Carrier sowie die Anbieter von Hosted SIP Services (Session Initiation Protocol) sollten mit dieser Infrastruktur und der App als OEM-Produkt VoIP-Services anbieten. Die Lösung erlaubt laut Anbieter VoIP-Telefonie über Wi-Fi. Die Versionen der OEM-Partner sollen dies auch über Mobilfunknetze erlauben. Nokia streicht 285 Stellen im finnischen Salo

Irgendwie surreal: Dass es überhaupt erwähnenswert ist, dass das iPhone - gefühlt seit einem Jahrzehnt unterwegs - jetzt endlich auch einen SD Card Reader bekommt. Und das eigentlich selbstverständliche Feature kommt auch nicht von Apple sondern von zoomMediaPlus. Der zoomIt soll dann ab April für 60 Dollar (!) zu haben sein. Apple hat eine ähnliche Erweiterung zwar schon fürs iPad angekündigt (Das Camera Connection Kit für 30 Dollar), aber nichts dergleichen fürs eigene Uber-Phone. Eigentlich ein guter Witz. Studie: 17% der US-Handykunden nutzen Apps, 2/3 Textnachrichten
Die Mobil-Spezialisten von comScore haben für die aktuellste Ausgabe ihrer comScore Reports die Entwicklung im US-Handymarkt (234 Mio. Menschen) im letzten Quartal des vergangenen Jahres untersucht. Die Ergebnisse für alle mobilen Endgeräte, inkl. "Dumb Phones", sehen Motorola mit 23,5% Marktanteil an der Spitze, gefolgt von LG (21,9%), Samsung (21,2%), Nokia (9,2%) und RIM (7,0%).
Im Marktsektor der Smartphone-Betriebssysteme findet sich weiterhin RIM (BlackBerry OS) mit 41,6% vorne, hat aber einen Prozentpunkt zum Vergleichszeitraum abgeben müssen. Apple (iPhone OS) hat hingegen mit 25,3% um 1,2 Prozentpunkte aufgeholt, gefolgt von Windows Mobile (18,0%, -1%), WebOS (Palm: 6,1%). Android muss sich noch mit 5,2% bescheiden, hat aber um beachtliche 2,7 Prozentpunkte zugelegt.

The PrePeat rewritable printer is exactly that: using special paper made of PET plastic, you can make all the flowcharts and meeting notes you need, and when you want to start fresh, feed the paper back in to start fresh. Upfront cost is 500,000 yen (about $5,600 in US) for the printer and 300 yen for each sheet, in lots of 1,000 -- which we're taking to mean at least another 300,000 yen / $3,360 to get some use out of it. Nikon tonight had its second round of camera news in as many weeks with two new lenses for both its DX- and FX-mount DSLRs. Ever since the MacBook Air, a machine made for 3G wireless access, was released without built-in ability to connect to mobile wireless, I've been waiting for Apple to put 3G access in their laptops.
Will my wait be over soon?

ZoomMediaPlus intros new SD card reader for iPhone
ZoomMediaPlus has introduced the ZoomIt memory card reader for the iPhone and iPod touch. The new dock-connecting accessory works with the companyís ZoomIt application that provides access to content stored on SD cards. Support is offered for all file types recognized by iPhone OS 3.0, ranging from photos and videos to PowerPoint documents. The accessory allows users to upload all stored media for use at a later time, or share files with other users via e-mail, Facebook or Flickr.

According to Valleywag, Steve Jobs laid into The Wall St. Journal's online executive editor Alan Murray who sent out a simple tweet from his loaner iPad. The reporter, tail between legs, deleted the tweet and gave the following statement:

Current MacBook Pro SKU given mark of death in Best Buy database?
We'll admit to not being leading the field of study in Best Buy-ology, but here comes a new quiz for us care of a tipster who sent TUAW a screenshot of the inventory screen (we also received our own copy of the image in full) that shows what looks to be the current MacBook Pro SKU with status: deleted. What that means is no new orders can be made for that unit, at least for that particular store. Sign of impending MBP refresh? Intel certainly had us riled up last month with that Core i5-infused flier, but we won't get fooled again. Don't hold your breath for this one, but if more telltale signs start popping up, we'll be sure let ya know.

Apple is reportedly distributing a survey to iPhone developers, with a variety of questions covering the App Store program. Respondents are asked to rate their level of satisfaction in different areas such as enrollment, feedback, the submission process, review process, and length of time it takes to get updates onto the App Store.

Best Buy Show MacBook Pro Inventory as deleted

Our Best Buy spys have forwarded us a screenshot of their inventory system that shows all current MacBook Pros in the system as "deleted". Perhaps an update is coming sooner rather than later?

NVIDIA pursuing external graphics accelerators for laptops?
It's not everyday that we can say there's external laptop GPU love in the air, but right on the heels the appearance of the Gigabyte M1405 with its GeForce GT220 dock, NVIDIA is expressing interest in external laptop GPUs as well. Netflix may offer 1080p streaming, 5.1 surround
Netflix will try to claim an edge in its media service by offering streaming full HD, a rumor maintains this afternoon. The company will supposedly roll out 1080p streams with 5.1-channel surround sound at some point later this year. It currently offers 720p to just a handful of devices, most notably the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 but also Roku's Internet Player.

1080p, 5.1 surround sound coming to Netflix Watch Instantly in 2010?
Netflix Watch Instantly fans could be due for a big upgrade, as CNET has heard the company will roll out 1080p and 5.1 surround sound later this year. No word on timing or any other details, but this could mean its moving to version 3 of Microsoft's Silverlight streaming platform with its additional tweaks for adaptive streaming and hardware graphics acceleration. 2.5 TB as the Next Step for 3.5" HD?
Currently 3.5" HDs offer up to 2 TB of storage space. They are composed of 4 discs of 500 GB each. If in theory 5 discs could fit in the enclosure, to reach 2.5 TB, no manufacturer made this choice so far. Indeed, with the heat released by mechanical operations, it would impact reliability and life time. However, we should see 2.5 TB HD models soon according to a roadmap from TDK, one of the main manufacturers of HD heads. They have in development a head able to push capacity of each disc to 640 GB. Once ,assembled by four of such disc, it would storage space of 2.5 TB. For 2.5" HD, their storage capacity could reach 750 to 800 GB splitted on 2 discs.

AT&T Navigator 1.5i brings night mode, speed limit alerts
AT&T has released an update to its iPhone navigation app, AT&T Navigator. Version 1.5i offers an improved interface which now includes a speed limit display, with visual and audio alerts to notify the user when the limit is exceeded. A new option in the Recent Places menu allows users to easily navigate back to the origin of their last trip, while a "Shake-to-Go" feature automatically sets the route to go home when the iPhone is shaken.

Google drops Nexus One early cancel fee to $150
Google on Monday quietly dropped the cost of the controversial Equipment Recovery Fee for the Nexus One to $150. The company's updated Terms of Sale now list a price less than half the $350 it had charged originally. The fee still takes effect within 120 days and stacks on top of T-Mobile's own $200 early termination fee.
