Jobs visiting NY Times, Wall Street Journal for iPad deals?
Apple chief Steve Jobs has been visiting prominent US newspaper publishers to get deals for the iPad, a rumor today insists. The co-founder reportedly showed up at the New York Times and Wall Street Journal for demos that were either kept "off the record" or else deliberately closed to all but a select group of people. The Times is also said by New York Magazine to have held an executive dinner with Jobs, though there it was mostly to show his iPad and explain his view of media.

Steve Jobs is on a whistle stop tour of New York media companies - wearing a big top hat?
An iPad's sales job isn't over with the event announcement. Steve Jobs has been working his magic around New York hitting the big media companies, selling his iPad vision to the big players. Yesterday, he made a whistle stop tour of both the Wall Street Journal as well as the New York Times' Newsroom.
Last night, he stopped to have dinner with 50 executives of the New York Times, apparently arriving in a tall hat.
When Apple recently booked the cellar dining room at Pranna for a talk with 50 top executives from the New York Times, even restaurant higher-ups didn’t know who their VIP guest would be. But last night, Jobs came strolling in wearing what our source calls “a very funny hat — a big top hat kind of thing.”

Tags 2.0 adds new search engine, Adobe support
Gravity Applications has launched Tags 2.0, a new version of its filetagging software. The tool lets users tag all files and folders within Finder, as well as e-mails, photos or bookmarks in Safari. With the upgrade a new search engine has been introduced, adding tag search. The update also includes a tag browser, and support for Mailplane, Firefox and various Adobe applications.

iPads already popular with physicians: 20% plan to purchase, 60%
We're sensing that Apple might just have a hit on its hands with the iPad, at least in the medical field. Epocrates, the medical software company did a survey of some of its physician customers on the iPad. They found that:
Nine percent of survey respondents plan to buy the iPad when it was immediately available,
Another 13 percent plan to buy it within the year,

Government warns of wireless network congestion again, rides iPad to push its spectrum agenda
The feds simply aren't backing down from their incessant warnings of a wireless broadband spectrum crunch the likes of which the world has never seen, and they've seemingly found a great vehicle -- the iPad -- to help spread the message just a little further (and at a higher volume) than before. Ex-Microsoft exec: company is now "clumsy, uncompetitive"
Microsoft has largely lost its ability to direct the industry, former VP Dick Brass claimed today in a telling editorial. He believes the company is now a "clumsy, uncompetitive innovator" and points to the gap in performance between its core Windows and Office businesses versus everything else. iPhone likely to stay with AT&T for another year?
A "75 percent probability" exists that AT&T will hold onto the American iPhone during 2010, claims Credit Suisse analyst Jonathan Chaplin. The odds stem from a lack of "compelling" evidence that AT&T exclusivity ends this year, with an overlapping one-in-four chance that AT&T will bid and win a one-year contract extension. Rumors of a Verizon iPhone have accelerated in recent weeks, but have mostly been tied to a January 27th event which turned out to be the iPad debut.

Microsoft responds to Dick Brass: 'We measure our work by its broad impact'
You had to know Microsoft would respond to former VP Dick Brass saying the company didn't have "a true system for innovation" in the New York Times this morning, and it looks like Redmond's VP of corporate communications Frank Shaw is on the move: he's just posted up a reply on The Official Microsoft Blog. New lithium-ion batteries could last 20 years
Researchers at Japan's Eamex have discovered a technique that could dramatically extend the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries. The new approach keeps the tin inside the battery intact for much longer despite the strain caused by charging and recharging. By absorbing much of the stress through a new alloy in the tin-coated resin, the tin and the electrode structure are more stable and could last for as long as 20 years.

AppFund promises to back iPad developers
A new capital investment firm, AppFund, has been launched to support iPad development. The company is based in New York City, and is the work of Kevin Wendle and Daniel Klaus, the former of which may be best known for co-founding CNET and E! Online. Motorola Devour has Flash support, makes Pixi look like an underachiever
Motorola's official spec sheet for the Devour reveals that there'll be a Flash Lite runtime on board -- presumably version 3.1, which offers support for a variety of video codecs and Flash 9 content -- and more importantly, it'll work in the browser. 93% of e-book reader users pleased, but want more
Nearly all those who own e-book readers are content with what they own but often want more, the NPD Group discovered today in a new study. Roughly 93 percent of owners are either "very" or "somewhat" satisfied. iPad name conflicts with STMicro trademarks
Apple has obstacles in Europe to overcome if it wants to legally use the name iPad, news sources observe. A joint French-Italian company, STMicroelectronics, is already said to have continental rights to the name under two trademark classifications, covering print usage and electronics and components. BumpTop- 3D Schreibtisch für Mac OS X
BumpTop ist eine etwas andere Alternative, Ordnung auf dem Desktop zu bekommen. Dies gelingt hier sehr gut und macht zudem Spaß.
Es handekt sich bei BumpTop um einen dreidimensionalen Desktop, welcher jedoch auf Wunsch auch per Mausklick zu einem “gewöhnlichen Scheibtisch” zusammenklappt. Wenn die restlichen Dateien wieder benötigt werden, wandelt sich der Desktop spielerisch um.

iPhone closing gap with BlackBerry in market share
Apple's share of the smartphone market has drawn much closer to that of BlackBerry creator RIM in the past year, IDC found in a study today. Apple had the fastest growth of all major smartphone makers and jumped from 11.2 percent in late 2008 to 16 percent in late 2009. Verizon, T-Mobile top customer care in cell providers

BenQ has launched two new small but potentially very vivid desktop displays. Both the G610HDAL and G610HDPL have just 15.6-inch, LED-backlit screens with a 1366x768 resolution but produce a dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1. The two differ mainly in brightness, as the G610HDAL's glossy screen is rated at 250 nits of output while the G610HDPL has an anti-glare screen that lowers its brightness to 220 nits.

Vodafone steigert Umsatz im dritten Quartal um 10,3 Prozent
Vodafone hat die Geschäftszahlen für das dritte Fiskalquartal seines Geschäftsjahres 2009/2010 veröffentlicht, das am 31. März 2010 endet. Vermutlich ist auch aus Richtung des Amazon Kindle etwas grundsätzlich Neues zu erwarten. Wie die New York Times vermeldet wurde der Touchscreen-Hersteller Touchco durch Amazon aufgekauft. Just a week ago the University of Georgia revealed that many of its study participants -- Athens residents who were given a Kindle to play with -- weren't happy with their e-reader experience, but yesterday a new study reported something fairly contrasting. O2 UK posts 2 million in iPhone sales
O2, owned by Spain's Telefonica, has sold over 2 million iPhones in the UK, according to Reuters. The carrier says it is pleased with the performance, and attributes the sales to being closely linked with the iPhone in the minds of UK shoppers. "It will take a long time before that goes away," adds O2 UK CEO Ronan Dunne, referring to one-time exclusivity and the entrance of Orange and Vodafone into the UK iPhone market.

Bell vows 100Mbps home fiber, turns on 25Mbps VDSL2
Bell today promised to revive the speed wars in Canada with a major deployment of fiber in key areas. The telecom giant says it plans a 3-year rollout of fiber to the home (FTTH) that will provide users download speeds of "at least" 100Mbps and upload speeds of 20Mbps. It will focus on the Quebec City area first as it depends less on below-ground networks but should expand in the second half of this year to include all new city and suburban housing in Ontario and Quebec.

We don't know much about this thing, Ikonoskop is only teasing the bare minimum of specs, but while we don't expect to be able to afford it, the upcoming A-cam3D is certainly an object of lust. The company has cut its teeth on a $10k 1080p RAW camera, the A-cam dII, and now it's taking that same tech into the realm of 3D. After searching in many different directions without really finding the beginning of a solution for all problems affecting the iMac 27", Apple seems to have identified the key factor. While everybody was initially thinking that the problem was linked to ATI/AMD GPU, leading to the first firmware update in December, this was not really fixing flickering issues as we reported it couple of weeks ago. It now seems that the firmware of the LCD panel found on some iMac 27" models is the root of almost all problems. The recent firmware update released beginning of this week has solved almost all display problems. This is confirmed by a new after sale procedure sent by Apple to all its certified repair centers with a dedicated application entitled: Apple Service Display Utility or ASDU. Sony "confident" it can tackle iPad
Sony while discussing its latest results today said it would like to compete against the iPad. Company CFO Nobuyuki Oneda said Sony is "very interested" in producing a tablet and is "confident" that it can produce a device that competes with Apple's hardware. Huch? Warum muss denn dieser neue Roboter der NASA (ein Nachfolger des ebenso muskulösen Robonaut) schon wieder Gewichtheben? Wir glauben ihm doch auch so, dass er kräftig genug ist um mit Meteroiden Baseball zu spielen. General Motors und die NASA jedenfalls haben 10 Jahre nach dem ersten Modell der es nie ins All geschafft hat, jetzt Robonaut2 entwickelt, der Laser in seinen Fäusten hat und vermutlich dennoch nicht allzuviel im All zu tun bekommt, denn auf den Mond geht es ja vorerst nicht mehr.

Samsung plans to triple smartphone sales in 2010
Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung's mobile division, announced the company's goal to ship more than 18 million smartphones this year. News: AT&T gives go-ahead for iPhone SlingPlayer over 3G
AT&T has announced that it will now allow the SlingPlayer app for iPhone to stream live TV over its 3G network. Es gibt Mal wieder Vermutungen, was in der nächsten iPhone-Generation verbaut werden wird. Engadget fand Hinweise darüber, dass das nächste iPhone über eine HD-Video-Kamera verfügen wird. Informationen in der Datei „MediaValidator.plist“ weisen im iPhone OS 3.2 SDK darauf hin, dass HD-Videos in 720p-Auflösung mit einem Gerät mit Codenamen „N89“ aufgezeichnet werden können.In der besagten Datei lassen sich einige Details herausfiltern. Sony steigert Gewinn im dritten Quartal um 660 Prozent

Sling coming to iPhone over 3G…finally
AT&T today announced that it would soon let Sling Player work on the iPhone over its 3G network. AT&T had originally said that Sling would cause too much traffic to flow over its network, which might cause service disruptions.
"Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network. The application does not run on our 3G wireless network. Applications like this, which redirect a TV signal to a personal computer, are specifically prohibited under our [brand new]terms of service. We consider smartphones like the iPhone to be personal computers in that they have the same hardware and software attributes as PCs.

AT&T on Thursday greenlit the use of SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone on its 3G network. IM Flash reduziert Strukturbreite auf 25 nm
Wie das von von Intel und Micron gegründete Joint-Venture IM Flash bekannt gegeben hat, konnte man die Strukturbreite der NAND-Flash-Chips auf 25 Nanometer reduzierten. Im Vergleich zur bisherigen 34-Nanometer-Technik können nun insgesamt 4 GB Kapazität auf einen Flash-Chip untergebracht werden. Twitter-Analyse: Noch geringe iPad-Kauflust
Die Attensity Group hat mit ihrem Produkt "Attensity Analyze" untersucht, wie Apples "Verkündigung" des iPad in den sozialen Medien aufgenommen wurde und welche Kaufabsichten die User hegen. Hierzu wurde eine Stichprobe von 20.000 Twitter-Einträgen ("Tweets") untersucht, die etwa zwei Stunden vor Apple´s Ankündigung erschienen waren, eine ebenso große Stichprobe zwei Stunden nach der Ankündigung sowie eine Stichprobe von 15.000 Einträgen vier Tage später.
Vor der Ankündigung ließ sich das Stimmungsbild als eher positiv charakterisieren: 37% mochten das iPad, 30% mochten es nicht und 17% waren neutral eingestellt. 2% offenbarten starke positive und 13% starke negative Gefühle bezüglich des iPads.
Kurz nach der Ankündigung wurde das Stimmungsbild deutlich positiver: 63% mochten das iPad, 24% mochten es nicht und 4% waren neutral. 8% zeigten starke positive und nur 1% starke negative Gefühle bezüglich des iPads. Vier Tage nach der Ankündigung hatte sich die Stimmung kaum

Sony returns to profitability as core electronics business struggles
Finally, after closing 18% of its manufacturing facilities and cutting 20,000 heads across its global organization, Sony just posted a profit for the quarter. We're talking an operating profit of ¥146 billion ($1.5 billion) for the quarter on ¥2.2 trillion in sales. Windows-Veteran Mike Nash verlässt Microsoft
Microsoft hat bestätigt, dass Windows-Veteran Mike Nash das Unternehmen im Lauf des Februars nach rund 19 Jahren Betriebszugehörigkeit verlassen wird. iTunes Preview jetzt auch für iPhone Apps verfügbar
Im vergangenen November 2009 enthüllte Apple ein neues Feature auf der eigenen Website. iTunes Preview erlaubte es seither ausschließlich Musik aus dem iTunes Store direkt im Webbrowser anzuzeigen. Exakt dazu passend, aktivierte Apple Anfang Januar 2010 eine 30 Sekunden lange Vorschaufunktion.Es stellte sich bereits die Frage, weshalb die iTunes Preview bisher nur für die Kategorie Musik eingeführt wurde. Genau diese Frage hat sich zumindest teilweise erledigt. Denn seit dem heutigen Morgen können auch iPhone Apps umfangreich via iTunes Preview auf der offiziellen Apple-Website angesehen werden. Auf dieser Preview-Seite (siehe Screenshot unten) ist im Grunde genau das zu sehen, was man auch im App Store vorfindet. Titel, App-Bild, Beschreibung, App-Informationen, Screenshots und nicht zu vergessen die Kundenrezensionen. Mit dem kleinen Unterschied, dass iTunes nur zum Kaufen und Herunterladen benötigt wird.

Wieder mal das iPhone verlegt? Die App "Where is my Phone" vom Little Worlds Studio liegt jetzt auch eingedeutscht zu "Wo ist mein Handy" im App Store vor. Die will laut Anbieter
"ein universelles Problem lösen: die Suche nach dem verlegten iPhone. Statt Jackentaschen, Rucksack, Wohnung oder Büro zu durchsuchen, pfeift man einfach, und das iPhone klingelt mit dem von dir gewählten Klingelton. Da auch eine Auswahl - nur innerhalb dieser App nutzbarer -"kreativer Klingeltöne" von der Hornfanfare bis zur Flatulenz sowie die Möglichkeit integriert wurde, eigene Sounds aufzunehmen, lässt sich dieses "Hier bin ich!"-Klingeln einerseits prächtig individualisieren, andererseits lädt die App zum VerAPPLen anderer ein - wenn auf den eigenen Pfiff hin diese speziellen Töne erklingen. Vor 14 Jahren: Gil Amelio wird CEO bei Apple
Seit 1994 war Gil Amelio bereits im Vorstand von Apple. Nachdem Ex-CEO Michael Spindler mit seiner Idee scheiterte, Apple an IBM, Sun Microsystems oder Philips zu verkaufen, wurde Amelio zwei Jahre später selber CEO. Engadget zaubert die hier aufgetauchten Plist-Dateien mit den vermeindlichen Codenamen der nächsten iPhone bzw. iPod touch Generation noch mal aus dem Hut. Citrix: Windows 7-Programme fürs iPad?
Citrix, Spezialist für das "Publizieren" von Anwendungen im Unternehmensnetzwerk, will mit einer "virtuellen Installation" auf Apples iPad auch Windows 7 zum Laufen bringen. In einem Blog erklärt Chris Fleck, VP für Community und Solutions Development bei Citrix, dass Unternehmen, die entweder XenDesktop oder XenApps lizenziert haben, auf dem iPad auch mit Windows 7 arbeiten können. "Es zeigt sich, dass das 9,7-Zoll-Display des iPad mit einer Auflösung von 1024 mal 768 Pixel sich hervorragend für eine virtuelle Desktop-Infrastruktur mit XenDesktop eignet", so Fleck in seinem Blog. Windows werde "unmodifiziert und sicher im Datenzenter arbeiten". Und es gibt sogar einen Pluspunkt, den es bei Apples Betriebssystem nicht gibt: Der Nutzer kann sogar mehrere Programme gleichzeitig auf dem iPad nutzen.

iTunes: Bessere Kategorisierung bei Genius-Mixen
Relativ wenig Beachtung finden immer noch die mit iTunes 9 neu eingeführten Genius-Mixe. Per Klick auf den gleichnamigen Eintrag in der iTunes-Quellenliste aufrufbar, bietet iTunes hier je nach Umfang der eigenen Musikbibliothek bis zu zwölf verschiedene, an Genres ausgerichtete Titelsammlungen an.
Seit dem letzten Update differenziert iTunes bei der Zusammenstellung der Genius-Mixe noch ein ganzes Stück feiner: Wo zuvor beispielsweise platt "Electronic" als Stilrichtung für einen solchen Mix stand, erscheinen jetzt Unterkategorien wie "Electronic Mainstream" oder "Downtempo".
Nehmt diese Aktualiserung zum Anlass, um euch die Funktion ein wenig anzusehen. Diese "selbstgebackenen Radiostationen" sind vor allem dann perfekt, wenn man irgendwas hören will, aber nicht so richtig weiß was genau. Genius-Mixe lassen sich auch auf den iPod übertragen, die entsprechende Option findet sich in den Synchronisierungseinstellungen für Musik im Bereich Wiedergabelisten.

Lost - Letzte Staffel sofort nach US-Ausstrahlung auch hier im iTunes Store
In den USA ist die letzte Staffel der erfolgreichen Fernsehserie Lost angelaufen und der deutsche iTunes Store bietet die Folgen in der Originalfassung jeweils einen Tag nach der US-Ausstrahlung an. Die beiden Teile der ersten Folge (eine Doppelfolge) sind jetzt zum Download erhältlich, der Preis pro Folge liegt bei 2,49 Euro für SD und 2,99 Euro für HD-Auflösung. Für späte Einsteiger in die Serie ist im Store zudem eine Zusammenfassung der bisherigen Serienhandlung kostenlos erhätlich.
Erstaunlich, wie lange es gedauert hat bis die Filmstudios sich auf diese Weise den Vorzügen des Internet bedienen. Serienfans außerhalb der USA haben nun erstmals eine legale Möglichkeit, direkt am Ball zu bleiben - und dies sogar noch in HD.

After Western Digital and its 2 TB Caviar Green, Samsung announced its similar product known as Spinpoint F3 Ecogreen.
Of course, performance levels are a bit down when compared to non-Ecogreen HD, however, this new Samsung HD spinning at 5,400 rpm wants to provide a storage capacity as silent as possible with the lowest power consumption. Its price should be around 150 Euro.
While it has been during years a niche market, 3.5" HD at 5,400 rpm are now quite popular and the performance gap with their brother spinning at 7,200 rpm is not really significant in most usage, especially when using them in a NAS or other similar function where the bottleneck is not linked to the performance of the drive, but rather the performance of the installation/cables. Will my child learn to read on an iPad?
I have a 16-month old who loves books. He also loves playing games on my iPhone and typing keys on the family computer. He knows a few letters and numbers but clearly he's nowhere near learning to read.
But I have to wonder: In two or three years, when it is time for him to learn how to read, will he be learning on old fashioned books or will he be learning with interactive excercises on iPad-like devices?

JooJoo tablet getting app store, in full production
Fusion Garage tonight says it will bolster the JooJoo tablet's competitiveness against the iPad by giving it an app store. Chief executive Chandra Rathakrishnan explains that while the 12-inch tablet is based on the web, his company will create a virtual app store that will organize and streamline accessing some sites, including those optimized just for the JooJoo. HP increases lead over Acer in worldwide laptop shipments
Acer pulled closer to HP than ever in the third quarter of 2009, when it shipped 8.86 million laptops compared to HP's 9.91 million, but it looks like things swung well back in the other direction during the fourth quarter. According to DigiTimes, HP shipped a whopping 11.38 million laptops worldwide in Q4, while Acer moved 9.5 million units during the same time period -- an sizable increase in itself, but likely not enough to cause too much celebration at Acer HQ. As you might suspect, the holiday shopping season was largely responsible for the jump in sales from both companies, with strong sales in North America in particular said to be the main reason behind HP's widening lead.

Indian mobile carriers scramble as illegal towers are shut down
Apparently the dizzying expansion of mobile coverage in India has proceeded a little quicker than the regulatory process there -- Indian carriers are in a bit of a tizzy after authorities shut down 300 allegedly illegal towers in a suburb of New Delhi called Noida. iPhone OS 3.1.3: Tethering auf freien iPhones offiziell zurück

2010 iPhone may pack 720p video capture
A further hunt through the same iPhone 3.2 SDK that discovered a new iPhone codename has unearthed an indicator that the Apple smartphone will also get 720p video playback and possibly capture. The MediaValidator preferences list file for the now allows videos as wide as 1280 pixels and a total 921,000 pixel count, or enough to match the 1280x720 resolution of 720p. It similarly recognizes the AVC 3.1 codec profile necessary to allow 720p footage.

Researchers make faster-than-silicon graphene chips

Windows Mobile 6.5.3 found to add capacitive touch
Microsoft today confirmed that the Windows Mobile 6.5.3 release launching first with the Sony Ericsson Aspen greatly improves the platform's support for touchscreens. In addition to making buttons more touch-friendly, it adds support for capacitive touch of the sort seen in Android and the iPhone, making it much more responsive. Meizu: no plans to clone iPad
Meizu chief Jack Wong as quietly put down speculation that his company might produce a clone of Apple's iPad. Although the M8 was created as a direct response to the iPhone, Wong said he doesn't have the "slightest interest" in making a tablet version. He told fans that he would rather not "lose face" by creating such a design.
