Amazon buyout may hint at multi-touch Kindle
Amazon has bought small startup to bring touchscreens to the Kindle, a purported insider said today. The bookseller is believed to have bought Touchco to roll it into Lab126, the same division responsible for Amazon's e-book reader. Conditions for the deal weren't mentioned to the NYT in the leak, and neither of the involved partners has agreed to comment.

ARM: 90% of PCs may be netbooks in coming years
Chipmaker ARM believes netbooks will make up 90 percent of the PC market, according to the company's chief executive Warren East. ARM is the biggest competitor to Intel's Atom CPUs in the netbook market, and East believes the company will not rely on Windows support in order to be successful. In a typical netbook, the main chip is usually an Intel or AMD device, with two or three ARM microprocessors for features such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and East says ARM is trying to change that.

Microsoft's Best Buy-exclusive Arc Keyboard still won't be hitting stores for another couple of weeks (February 21st, to be specific), but we were lucky enough to get our hands on one a little early, and figured we'd share a few impressions with you, the keyboard-using masses. FontExplorer X Server 1.5 improves administrator control
Monotype Imaging has unveiled v1.5 of FontExplorer X Server, used for online font management and control. The app lets users work in groups, and combines the FontExplorer X Pro client with network administration support. Version 1.5 adds a new lockdown feature that limits the specific functions of people using Pro, as well as new server replication that distributes workloads over multiple servers.

Unified Color debuts HDR PhotoStudio for Mac
Unified Color has announced that HDR PhotoStudio is now available for the Mac. The software uses the companyís Beyond RGB color model for the creation and editing of high dynamic range images. For editing the app uses 32-bit floating point technology, and tools for altering brightness, contrast, sharpness, and shadow/highlight balance. Brightness and contrast tweaks are said to leave color tones unaffected.

Amazon buys touchscreen startup Touchco, merging with Kindle division
In what we're hoping bodes well for future Kindle iterations, Amazon's pulled out its credit card and picked up New York-based startup Touchco, who specializes in -- you guessed it -- touchscreen technology. The company will be merged with Lab126, a.k.a. the Kindle hardware division. Director of National Intelligence says major cyber attack could wreak havoc on the U.S. of A.
Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair told the National Intelligence Committee that the United States is at risk of a "crippling" cyber-attack, and without the proper tools to defend against such an attack. Blair counseled the US to "deal with that reality," saying that catastrophic consequences would result if it did not deal with said reality. Specific problem areas he cited include the fact that more and more, foreign companies supply both the hardware and software for private businesses. Apple looks at patenting touch-sensitive bezels
A newly-published patent application shows Apple's possible or one-time interest in adding touch-sensitive edges to some of its products. Under a proposed scheme, various kinds of electronics including phones, GPS devices and media players would have touch components implanted in their bezels, accompanying or instead of a touchscreen display surface. Onscreen elements could be used to indicate where on a bezel to touch for different commands.

Fehlalarm? LED Cinema Display 20" wohl doch nicht versehentlich bestätigt
Es wäre zu schön gewesen: Im Informationssschreiben von Gravis ist die Rede von einem LED Cinema Display 20". Beim Kauf jenes Displays hätte es einen Einkaufsgutschein in Höhe von 50 Euro gegeben, beim LED Cinema Display 24" sowie beim Cinema Display 30" 80 Euro. MSI Wind modded with sliding keyboard and touchscreen
The original MSI Wind is so two years ago, but an Insanely Wind forum member with the handle of ac0ff33 figured out a way to make it so two years from now. Taking a cue from slider phones, the modder has managed to flip the Wind's 10.1-inch display around, fit it on top of the keyboard, and add a resistive touchscreen. He appears to still be working on getting it to slide up to reveal the keys, but from the comments in the forum he's got a pretty solid plan to make it all happen. And if all that isn't good enough, he's also added a plastic power button next to the screen, along with a key for choosing either Win 7 or OSX when booting. Needham: 2 million iPads in 2010, 6 million in 2011
Apple will likely sell 2 million iPads in FY 2010, with another 6 million coming in 2011, says Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf. The firm has completed its first assessment of the tablet's potential, which is said to founded on several assumptions. Motorola Devour spotted in the wild, sized up against a Nexus One
While just recently made official, there have been plenty of Motorola Devour leaks over the years (er, months) to keep us occupied. Skype talks iPad and VoIP over 3G
Interesting. Skype today posted a video regarding updating the application to enable it to work over 3G. This, shall we say, "flies in the face" of what they said a few weeks back when they blamed Apple for not allowing them to do VoIP over 3G. Here's Skype's Peter Parkas:

ARM CEO says netbooks could eventually grab 90 percent of PC market
Think netbooks are on their way out? Not according to ARM CEO Warren East, who said in a recent interview with PC Pro that while netbooks now only represent 10% or so of the PC market, he believes that "over the next several years that could completely change around and that could be 90% of the PC market." Obviously, he also thinks that would be a huge boon to ARM, and notes that while the main CPU in most netbooks may not be an ARM processor, there are probably at least two or three ARM chips of some sort in each netbook sold. In fairness, we assume that East means netbooks will evolve significantly from their present state over those next several years -- but, still, ninety percent?

Scosche solBAT II gives iPhones, more a solar backup
Accessory maker Scosche today put out the solBAT II as its second wave of solar-powered external batteries. The pack gives iPhones, iPods and most handheld USB devices a 1,500mAh lithium-ion pack whose sun recharging lets it provide "free" energy to keep a device going. Apple signing up extra manufacturer for fourth-gen iPhone?
Apple is signing up a second major manufacturer to produce the fourth-generation iPhone, industry sources claim. Pegatron Technology, an ASUS subsidiary, will allegedly fill in alongside Foxconn, a long-time Apple partner already manufacturing the iPhone 3GS. Clayton Morris today colored in the details behind his claims of ongoing Verizon iPad talks with word of why the carrier was absent from the launch and its future plans. Climbing walls is one of those odd feats that scientific establishments seem compelled to master -- despite there being few practical applications beyond the ultimate in Marvel-themed Halloween attire. The latest to tackle the challenge are Paul Steen and Michael Vogel from Cornell University, who have stolen the sticky-feet technique of a Floridian beetle that apparently failed to file a patent. The technique relies on the surface tension of water and capillary action of fluids forced through thousands of microscopic holes. When moisture is pushed through the holes it creates a suction on a smooth surface, enough at this point for the team's prototype to hold a weight of 30 grams.

Hexacore Xeon-based Mac Pro Soon: Part II
To confirm our previous information, other sources indicate that the new Mac Pro would come around March, 16. Apparently only the high-end Intel Xeon Core i7-980X will initially be available. Clocked at 3.33 GHz, its TurboBoost mode will allow it to reach 3.6 GH. The Core i7-970X will be clocked at 3.2 GHz, with a 3.46 GHz TurboBoost.
If Intel only releases initially a single hexacore Xeon, then Apple will not have much choice and most likely only the high-end model of Mac Pro will evolve. So, the offer should then evolve to faster quad core CPU and lower price for entry level models.
We also suspect that Apple will take the opportunity of this "refreshment of the offer" to release a new design for the Mac Pro. We would love to have at least one 2.5" enclosure for installing a SSD where the system you be installed as well as applications, this is already possible on the Xserve.

The current Nehalem-based version of the Mac Pro, released in October 2009, is being impacted by unusual performance problems, owners say. Nexus One: Multitouch as touch can
Einen Monat nach der Vorstellung des Nexus One wurde dem mit Android-2.1 betriebenen Smartphone jetzt ein Firmware-Upgrade spendiert. Für einige Apps beinhaltet dies die Unterstützung von Multitouch. 20 Jahre Photoshop
In einem umfangreichen Artikel feiert Webdesigner Depot 20 Jahre Photoshop. Das ursprünglich von den Brüdern Thomas und John Knoll entwickelte Mac-Programm, dessen Wurzeln bis in das Jahr 1988 zurückgehen, wurde ab Februar 1990 dank CMYK-Unterstützung und Pfad-Werkzeugen in kurzer Zeit zum Industrie-Standard. Mit Version 2.5 wurde schließlich erstmals auch Windows unterstützt, wobei das Programm dafür vollständig umgebaut werden musste.

Das hier ist sozusagen die Luxusversion von Hermit, nämlich ein kompletter Kokon für den Power Nap zwischendurch. Erdacht von Designer Forrest Jessee dient er dazu, immer und überall einigermassen bequem ins Reich der Träume fallen zu können, durch die transparente Struktur aber gegebenenfalls immer die Umwelt im Blick zu behalten. Auch wenn wir uns dann doch lieber ein richtiges Bett wünschen, ist das doch wesentlich bequemer als den Kopf auf die Tischplatte fallen zu lassen. Hitachi announced that they have successfully developed a new technology to increase the density of disc-based HD up to 2.5 Tbits/inch2. By making magnetic particles easier to be manipulated, the surface (tracks) required would then be smaller. Hitachi did not reveal any availability for this product. Indeed, so far any HD manufacturer that tried to warn the magnetic surface with a laser before writing data on the surface had to face a major problem; the weight of the laser beam. Mit der kostenlosen Logitech-App Touch Mouse lässt sich ein iPod touch oder ein iPhone als drahtlose Tastatur und Trackpad für einen Mac oder Windows-PC (XP, Vista und 7) benutzen. Voraussetzung ist die Installation des ebenfalls kostenlosen Logitech Touch Mouse Server auf dem Computer.
Die Logitech-Lösung eignet sich somit zur Fernbedienung des Computers vom Bett oder Sofa aus und unterstützt auch das MacBook-Besitzern bekannte Zwei-Finger-Scrolling. Nikon megazooms bring 1080p, CMOS sensors
Nikon led its PMA camera launches early with a Tuesday night launch of several new Coolpix cameras. These are headlined by ultrazooms and start with the P100: a sequel to the P90, it becomes the first Nikon compact with a back-illuminated CMOS sensor and gets all the image quality and speed advantages of moving beyond CCD. Hitachi Ready to Dramatically Enhance Capacity of Dosk-based HD
Hitachi announced to have successfully developed a new technology to increase the density of disc-based HD up to 2.5 Tbits/inch2. In theory with such figures, one could obtain 3.5" HD with storage capacity of 10 TB, in other words 2.5x more than the current perpendicular recording technologies. To reach such density, Hitachi developed new magnetic heads associated with leaser beam, able to emit a ray of only 20 nm in diameter. This laser will warm the area where data will be saved. By making magnetic particles easier to be manipulated, the surface (tracks) required would then be smaller.Hitachi does not reveal any availability for this product. Indeed, so far any HD manufacturer that tried to warn the magnetic surface with a laser before writing data on the surface had to face a major problem; the weight of the laser beam. Indeed, this mechanical part would have physical constraints making access time in reading and writing modes potentially less effective.

Nikon kicks out new Coolpix S- and L-series cams
Keeping with the pre-PMA announcements, Nikon also launched the S and L series of cams just now -- the S stands for "Style," and L stands for "Life." Nikon Coolpix P100 joins the superzoom party at 26x
Nikon just fired off its first pre-PMA camera announcement with the new Coolpix P100 superzoom, which packs a five-way stabilized 26x optical zoom lens in front of a 10.3 megapixel CMOS sensor with ISO 3200 sensitivity, Backside Illumination and Active D-Lighting. Yeah, it's not quite the 30x zoom from the new Olympus SP-800UX, but the lens can also do macro shots at 0.4 inches, and there are in-camera HDR features, a 40-shot pre-shooting cache, and a 3-inch 460,000-dot tilting LCD. We're also told the P100 shoots 1080p video, but we don't know anything about frame rates or formats yet -- we're looking for more, we'll let you know. News Corp head favors iPad pricing over Kindle's
News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch today openly dismissed Amazon's e-book store in favor of Apple's in his company's fiscal results call on Tuesday. The executive, who also owns publisher HarperCollins, argued that the Kindle store's $10 or less pricing "devalues books" and punishes those selling hard copies. He instead favored Apple's deal with HarperCollins for iBooks and the iPad, which he hinted would allow a "variety of slightly higher prices" that could bend to reflect demands.

Major textbook pubs partner with ScrollMotion for iPad development
Putting traditional print publication on an iPhone screen is old hat for ScrollMotion, and now it's taking that know-how to a larger screen. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Kaplan, Pearson Education, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt K-12, and the educational sector of McGraw-Hill have all made deals with the company to develop textbook apps and test-prep / study guide apps for the Apple iPad. No other details are given and we unfortunately lack any timeline. It certainly makes the machine more classroom-viable, but we'll hold judgment until we see what actually comes of this partnership --

Briefly: iMac shipping time falls, Traktor Kontrol available
Estimated shipping times on the 27-inch iMac have dropped down to two weeks. Just over a week ago the shipping times were pushed out by a week for unknown reasons, but it was assumed Apple was addressing issues with the displays. Since the introduction of the 27-inch iMac, there have been complaints about flickering displays and, more recently, yellow tint issues. The quicker shipping time runs contrary to rumours that production of the 27-inch iMac is set to temporarily halt, and could indicate that a proper solution for the issues has been found.

After Mobile Phone, Google Might Be Thinking of Tablet Too
After having launched its own mobile phone (recently criticized by Steve Jobs), Google might well be working on a Tablet concept.
The leak is apparently coming from on developer associated to the Chrome OS project. Indeed, the Tablet to be manufactured by HTC would be running on Chrome OS and not Android. If this turn true, Google will then become most likely the main competitor for Apple, and probably much more dangerous than Microsoft. WE might even think of Apple and Microsoft teaming up to compete with Google and its strategy.
