iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 3 pushes towards universal development
Apple has released a third beta of iPhone SDK 3.2, an update of the company's iPhone OS development tools. Few details of the beta have emerged, but Apple notes that it allows "existing iPhone projects to include the necessary files" to support the iPad. Developers should thus be closer to producing working iPad apps, as there is now a Universal Application binary format that wraps iPhone, iPad and iPod touch code into the same bundle.

iPad confirmed to use PowerVR SGX graphics, Apple job posting suggests A4 chip will hit other products
It may not be as big a surprise as the A4 itself was, but Apple has now confirmed via the latest iPad SDK Beta 3 documentation that the iPad does indeed use PowerVR SGX graphics hardware as part of its custom system-on-a-chip, which flatly contradicts previous reports of A4 using Mali, and lines up with what our pal Anand Shimpi has been telling us lately. What Apple doesn't confirm, unfortunately, is exactly which chip in the PowerVR SGX family the iPad uses, so it's still at least possible that it could pack a bigger punch than the iPhone or iPod touch.

We found the "bug" in iPad OS 3.2 beta 3
Apple took down the iPad SDK for some reason. We still don't know why. But it might be that third tab in the Photos.app below. We'll see if this is the reason for the takedown when the next iPad SDK comes out.
Update: The iPad has a USB interface with a camera (and an SD card reader) so this might just be the interface for importing pictures.

MSI announces GT660 gaming laptop ahead of CeBIT
We've already heard about some of the systems MSI has in store for CeBIT -- including a 3D-capable Wind Top -- but it looks like the company still has bit more lined up, including this new GT660 gaming laptop. In addition to the requisite red accents to make it go faster, this one packs a quad-core Core i7 processor, along with GeForce GTX 285M and, just as notably, some USB 3.0 ports to ensure your peripherals are just as speedy. Sigma plans Micro Four Thirds rival
Photography camera and lens maker Sigma has plans to produce a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses in the near future, according to COO Kazuto Yamaki. Speaking to DPReview, Yamaki revealed the camera will sport the company's own Foveon sensors. At the same time, indicated Sigma would consider producing lenses for the Micro Four Thirds cameras out on the market at this time. While prime lenses are currently popular for the category, Yamaki believes future demand will turn to zoom lenses.

Acer already backtracking on e-reader plans
Acer is reconsidering its plans to launch an e-book reader, company chairman Wang Jeng-tang stated later on Monday. The company had already given signals that it would unveil a 6-inch reader by June and even has a prototype but is now hesitant as it's not convinced the market is ready. E-readers are still a small field and don't have a 'proven' strategy, the Acer chairman said.

Adobe preparing to announce new Creative Suite app?
Adobe will be showcasing a new, as yet unheard-of Creative Suite program in April, conference listings show. An "Adobe Technology Preview" is scheduled as part of the Emerge print production conference, to be held in San Antonio, Texas on April 21st and the 22nd. The product is described only as a "brand new application" that will "surprise even the most 'in the know' Adobe fans."

PA school district issued order to refrain from webcam spying (video)
Why a school district would ever think it was acceptable to secretly snap pictures of its students -- in their own homes, no less -- is totally beyond us, but with any luck the Lower Merion School District webcam caper will soon have its day court. PocketGear acquires Handango
On Tuesday, PocketGear announced it has acquired Handango, thus creating the largest cross-platform, open-source application store in the world. PocketGear itself already covered more than 2,000 mobile electronics and every main OS, while Handango offers nearly 140,000 apps for BlackBerry, Palm, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Linux platforms. The two are now nearly on par with the number of offerings in Apple's App Store.

Mac use finds growing favor in mixed enterprises
About 66 percent of IT administrators from organizations mixing Macs and PCs expect their Mac populations to grow, claims a firm specializing in ways of streamlining Mac integration. The Enterprise Desktop Alliance notes that the figure is based on data from 322 administrators, each of which is from a company with over 50 servers or 100 Macs. Adobe to announce a new Creative Suite application at conference?
Adobe might be launching a new product at a print production conference later this month:
Listed as an 'Adobe Technology Preview' by Noha Edell, business development manager for cross media publishing solutions at Adobe, the site for the Emerge conference in San Antonio on April 21-22 says that "Adobe will unveil a brand new application as part of its signature suite [CS5] of services. Microsoft's Project Natal lag calculated to be a tenth of a second
Eager for a bit more Project Natal news now that Jonathan Ross let slip what may or may not be a launch date? Then you're in luck, as MTV's Multiplayer blog has taken advantage of a recent Natal demo session to peg down exactly how much lag we can expect from the motion-sensing system (assuming it's not fine-tuned any further, that is). After timing some 40 movements with a stopwatch, the site found that "life-to-screen" transitions ranged from 0.08 seconds to 0.12 seconds, or about a tenth of a second on average. Cox tests 4G, gets 25Mbps
Cox Communications' Stephen Bye, vice president of wireless service, says tests of the company's Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G network technology reached peak speeds in the 25Mbps range. The tests, occurred in atypical conditions, employing a single user with a multiple-antenna setup at very close range. Toward the limit of the test cell's coverage, data rates dropped to 10Mbps. In real-life situations, data transfer would be shared between multiple users in the cell's range.

Windows Phone 7 devices locked into 3 main designs?
Devices using Windows Phone 7 will have just three main form factors to choose from, the company said during the most recent episode of the Frankly Speaking podcast. AMD admits some 12-core Opterons shipping early
AMD's Director of Product Marketing for Server/Workstation John Fruehe admitted today that 12-core Opteron chips have already begun shipping, as reported last week. What the company is calling its most advanced x86 processor, codenamed Magny-Cours, is officially named the Opteron 6100 Series and production has started weeks ago at a factory in Germany. Fruehe goes on to say that OEM partners began receiving production chips in February, though exactly who received the chips is not yet being publicly revealed.

PCWorld gives AT&T's network glowing test results
I have to admit, once I leave San Fancisco or New York, my iPhone magically becomes usable. Calls go through and last more than a few minutes before getting cut off. At my parent's house in Ohio, I have the best wireless data network in the world. Maps data is instant and there is never even a little bit of a lag. Youtube movies load almost instantly.
I had the opportunity to talk to a lot of people at Macworld who had the exact opposite experience. They'd come from such places as Philadelphia, San Diego, and even Chicago where their iPhones actually behaved like phones.

A New Application from Adobe in April?
We recently reported about the on-going fight between Apple and Adobe, initiated around Flash but expanding to the entire catalog of Adobe. We were also mentioning that it was weird to see some "leaks" of the future CS5 appearing and already announcing most of the long time expected features (Cocoa, 64-bits, etC.) So, the buzz around Adobe applications for the Mac seemed to be rather active, maybe to fire-back against Apple its recent criticisms from Steve Jobs. Well, it seems that Adobe decided to fuel the buzz further and let another set of information leaked prior official announcements: a new rumor indicates that Adobe would launch a new application in April. there is no further details, despite it should be revolutionary and could complement the current CS. Barnes & Noble downplays iPad, says Nook sales "strong"
Barnes & Noble chief Steve Riggio today said during a fiscal results call that the iPad shouldn't be a major concern for his company's health. The executive asserted that, while having a self-branded e-reader is "critical," Barnes & Noble isn't dependent on a single platform and offers its bookstore on the iPhone as well as the BlackBerry and most computers. While also true of Amazon's Kindle store, hardware is argued less important at Barnes & Noble.

Im Video (nach dem Break) zeigt Jyri Hämäläinen mit einem (wahrscheinlich modifizierten) Nokia N900, wie mit der Technik ein komplettes Album innerhalb von 10 Sekunden aus Nokias Musikshop gesaugt werden kann. 3G test sees major turnarounds in AT&T speed, stability
AT&T today landed a surprise win in a new test of 3G performance in the US. The carrier had both the fastest average download speeds, at 1.4Mbps, and the fastest uploads, at 773Kbps. Both were major improvements and were as much as 84 percent faster than what was seen a year earlier. T-Mobile and Verizon were only periodically able to crest 1Mbps while Sprint would only come close to the mark.

Third new iPhone TV ad surfaces on Apple website
Having uploaded two spots yesterday, Apple has posted the third in group of iPhone TV ads on its website. The new one, "Family Travel," suggests that the iPhone can be integrated into many parts of a family's vacation. LIDAR-equipped robot maps dangerous areas in 3D so you don't have to
Looks like the kids at MIT might have a little competition for their LIDAR-equipped 3D mapping drone. Researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology have teamed up with the University of Missouri-Columbia for a prototype robot that uses light detection and ranging (similar to RADAR, but with lasers) to map areas and send the 3D data to a nearby laptop. The technology not only provides detailed info on floor plans and physical structures (such as possible structural damage) but it can also "see" people inside a space. Gartner: Weltweiter Handymarkt schrumpft 2009 leicht
Der weltweite Handymarkt ist im vergangenen Jahr leicht geschrumpft. Das geht aus aktuellen Zahlen des Marktforschungsunternehmens Gartner hervor. Die Zahl der verkauften Mobiltelefone sank demnach im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 0,9 Prozent von 1,222 Milliarden Geräten auf 1,211 Milliarden. Public iPad demand at roughly 13 percent
Roughly 13 percent of the public may be likely to buy an iPad, claims RBC Capital Markets' Mike Abramsky. The analyst cites a recent RBC/ChangeWave survey, which used a base of 3,200 people. Microsofts gestische Game-Steuerung Project Natal dürfte tatsächlich noch dieses Jahr zum Weihnachtsgeschäft kommen: Nachdem bereits zuvor über einen Start Anfang November gemunkelt wurde, hat jetzt auch der BBC-Journalist Jonathan "Wossy" Ross entsprechendes geäußert, nachdem er Project Natal ausgiebig ausprobieren durfte. Durchgehend vom Hocker gehauen hat die Steuerung Ross übrigens nicht, aber Microsoft habe ja noch "bis Oktober Zeit" das System zu optimieren.

'Family Travel' iPhone ad released
I was just talking about this with friends the other day. Traveling has totally changed since I got an iPhone and with more and more carriers getting Gogo wireless, even the flights are much easier to deal with.
It doesn't stop with interesting apps either. With sites like Flightaware, you don't' have to believe the gate people when they say they don't know when a flight is going to arrive or take off or if you'll be late or not.

Der Flash 10.1 Player scheint problemlos zu funktionieren, auch wenn Taimur Asad von Redmond Pie augenscheinlich sympathischerweise nicht so genau weiß, wie man eigentlich Farmville spielt. What's better than paying £400 ($615) for a laptop from a place that won't tell you what's inside it? Paying that much for a laptop that then comes with a £9.99 ($15) monthly fee just to use the thing. Rogers on Tuesday became a rarity among North American carriers by potentially eliminating roaming fees on its data plans. Comcast may have significant 100Mbps service this year
A source at cable service provider Comcast says the company is making improvements to its Internet service that will provide 20 percent of its subscribers with 100Mbps download speed by the end of the year. Enhancements to the company's existing DOCSIS 3.0 modems and cable systems make the higher data transfer rates possible, according to BBR. Comcast has already upgraded 90 percent of its coverage area to get the option of 50Mbps download speeds but has only rolled out 100Mbps in a single market.

Android and iPhone win, Symbian and Win Mobile drop in 2009
Apple, Google and to a lesser extent RIM were the biggest winners for smartphone market share in 2009, according to Gartner's final end-of-year study. The three saw the fastest growth in share; RIM had the largest absolute share, moving up to 19.9 percent and second place with the BlackBerry line, but Apple and Google each grew faster. Apple jumped from just 8.2 percent of smartphones in 2008 to 14.4 percent for all of last year, while Android surged from just half a point through its late 2008 launch to 3.9 percent for all of 2009.

As unexpected sources of tech news go, UK television presenter Jonathan Ross is pretty high up there. But lo and behold, the man's had a chance to spend some quality time with Microsoft's Project Natal setup and while he's not altogether impressed with the current state of it, his note on when it's coming out is the one thing nobody has known for sure yet. Das ist bei dieser Sparbüchse definitiv nicht der Fall, denn hier wird das Geld in einem schnörkelosen, transparenten Plastikbehälter gesammelt. Luftaufnahmen der neuen Apple Serverfarm
Insgesamt 46 Hektar (circa 60 Fußballfelder) Serverfarm bekommen langsam ein Gesicht: Apples Großprojekt in Maiden, North Carolina, wird eine der größten Serverfarmen weltweit. Phil Schiller tries to explain App Story hypocrisy of "sexual content" rejections
don't worry: this is acceptable to kids and parents. Credit: App Store
The NY Times' Jenna Wortham got Phil Schiller to go on record about Apple's recent purge in apps with sexual content.
Mr. Schiller said Apple had to prioritize its customers. “We obviously care about developers, but in the end have to put the needs of the kids and parents first,” he said.
The obvious issue is that Apple has kept apps from Playboy and Time Warner (Sports Illustrated Swimsuit app) with gratuitous skin while removing apps from small developers with much less "sexy". Are "kids and parents" ok with the apps pictured here vs. a girl in a bikini cleaning a screen?

Gartner: Apple, Android, and RIM winners in 2009 smartphone growth, Nokia and Symbian still dominate
Gartner just released its annual numbers for worldwide mobile phone sales to end users in the year known as two thousand nine. Looking at smartphone OS market share alone, Gartner shows the iPhone OS, Android, and RIM making the biggest gains (up 6.2%, 3.4%, and 3.3% from 2008, respectively) at the expense of Windows Mobile (down 3.1%) and Symbian (down 5.5%). Viewsonic isn't quite our go-to for excellent PC design just yet, but its new VNB131 ViewBook Pro is a surprisingly decently attractive alternative to the usual ULV fare from the likes of Acer and ASUS. Maybe it's just that touch of "1999" in the aluminum curves and accents that we're finding ourselves suddenly drawn to. Outside of the looks, the VNB131 is mostly pretty stock ULV: there's an Intel ULV SU7300 Core 2 Duo processor, 320GB HDD, 2GB of RAM, a DVD burner, HDMI, VGA, 802.11n and a 7-in-1 card reader. Interestingly, however, you can swap out the DVD drive for an extra 3 cell battery, which in conjunction with the stock 6 cell should offer up to 12 hours of battery life.

MobileTV-Update macht Probleme - Lösungsansatz
Für die MobileTV-Anwendung der Telekom ist ein Update auf Version 1.1 erhältlich, das unter anderem den Kanalwechsel deutlich vereinfacht und ein ausführliches Tagesprogramm für verschiedene Sender anzeigt. UN warnt vor Zunahme von Elektronikschrott in Schwellenländern
Die Vereinten Nationen haben vor einer deutlichen Zunahme von Elektronikschrott in Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern gewarnt. Laut einer Studie des Umweltprogramms UNEP wächst der Müllberg in Indien bis 2020 voraussichtlich um 500 Prozent gegenüber 2007, in China und Südafrika sind es 400 Prozent. We've seen plenty products both real and imagined that promise to improve on the standard power strip, but few as elegantly designed as this so-called "Multi-Tab" concept from designer Soon Mo Kang. Not only is it modular to accommodate as many plugs as you need, but each module also has its own release mechanism to eject the plug without pulling on it, and it would come with a set of stickers to let you label each plug for minimal confusion. Toshiba und Panasonic haben es vorgemacht, nun hat auch SanDisk eine erste SDXC-Speicherkarte mit einer Kapazität von 64 GB vorgestellt. This card is based on the SDXC format, as SDHC was limited to 32 GB capacity. So, you will not be able to use it directly into the SD card readers of most notebooks, including the MacBook Pro. Lenovo ThinkPad bumps bring X201, X201s, X201t, W701, and W701ds into the Core i7 fold
Lenovo's giving some of its ThinkPad flagships a nice little spec overhaul, specifically the X200 series of ultraportables and the spectrum-leaping W700 hardlyportable dual screen laptop. The new X201 and X201s start things off with a new option for touchpads on the 12.1-inch form factor, options for Core i7 and Core i5 processors, and sub-three pound weigh-ins on at least the 4-cell configuration. Lenovo ThinkPad X201 Tablet review
Oh sure, the world may be off creating underpowered, web-based tablets, but Lenovo's not giving up on those who still need an old-fashioned, fully-powered tablet PC (all 10.1 of you). Truth be told, powerful is exactly how we would describe the new X201 Tablet with its new Intel low voltage Core i7 CPU and 4GB of RAM. But beyond being one of the speedier 12-inch laptops out there, its capacitive touchscreen now lets the touch-happy among us alternate between taking notes with its Wacom stylus and putting two fingers down to zoom or scroll. Sounds like a near perfect experience to us, but before tossing over $1,900 we figured you'd want to make sure it really is. We've been putting the X201T through the paces over the last few days, so hit the break for our full review.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 Fermi cards launching March 26th
It's okay, we understand your confusion, but the news here isn't that NVIDIA uses CoTweet as its Twitter client. What's exciting is that the GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 -- the company's first to use the new Fermi architecture -- are just over a month from release. Friday, March 26th, and given that also happens to coincidence with the kickoff date for Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) East 2010 (of which NVIDIA is a major sponsor), we tend to think that's not just some convenience coincidence.

Amazon, Microsoft in cross-licensing deal with Kindle
Amazon and Microsoft tonight agreed to a cross-licensing deal for each other's patents. The deal gives Microsoft special access to technology behind the Kindle reader as well as Amazon's implementation of Linux on servers. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, including what technology Amazon would get, but the online retailer will pay Microsoft an unmentioned sum as part of the transaction.

Sigma trio espied at PMA, COO expresses interest in supporting 'mirrorless camera systems'

Ngmoco receives $25 million in funding, buys Freeverse
Techcrunch reports that ngmoco:), the popular iPhone App development company behind such App Store hits as Rolando and Eliminate Pro, has purchased Freeverse. Freeverse is another popular iPhone Development company with App Store favorites Skee-Ball and Motochaser.
ngmoco was one of the beneficiaries of the Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers iFund.
Earlier this year the extremely prolific gamemaker made a bold move by making their most popular games free and relying on ads and in app purchases for income. It looks like that gamble paid off. ngmoco will do the same with all the apps they have acquired from Freeverse.

Apple has achieved a high ranking in yet another customer service comparison, placing third in a BusinessWeek lineup. Aerial video shows Apple's 500,000 sq. ft. server farm in NC
An aerial video captured from a helicopter allegedly shows Apple's new data-center located on 225 acres of land in Maiden, North Carolina. The enormous building is said to cover 500,000 square feet of floor space, over four times the area available in the company's server farm in Newark, California. Windows Marketplace tweaked, installs to storage cards now possible (Android, take note)
Microsoft has released an updated version of its Marketplace for Mobile application for WinMo 6.0 and up recently that makes a few key changes -- nothing that's going to shake you to your very core the same way that Windows Phone 7 Series did last week, certainly, but there's some good stuff in here nonetheless. Mini Countryman to use iPhone for Internet radio, data
BMW's sub-label Mini today revealed that the 2011 Mini Countryman will be one of the first cars to have tight app-level integration with the iPhone. The semi-rugged compact will have an optional central computing system known as Mini Connected that will tie into Apple's handset through two native apps. At its simplest, a "web radio" app will use the iPhone's 3G connection to reach any one of a set list of Internet radio stations; the car's center column display will give control over radio stations using the Countryman's own interface.
