Lexi e-book reader probably won't ever be called sexy (hands-on)
We swung by the Audiovox / RCA booth in search of the new Lexi e-reader but sadly were met with a non-working version that was effectively useless. We've heard about the specs but were lacking in the image department, so it was good to at least see what the thing will look like when it hits the increasingly crowded e-reader space. The design is basic, and from the signage in the booth, so is the UI on the handheld itself. There's not much else to say here, and the PR reps weren't the most helpful, but we managed to snag a bunch of shots anyway so check them out below.

iPhone wins touchscreen quality test
MOTO Development Group in a study published Saturday has given the iPhone top marks for the quality of its touchscreen. Comparing it against multiple Android phones -- including the Nexus One, Droid and Droid Eris -- the hardware consultants found Apple's screen is the most accurate and lets users draw smooth, straight lines regardless of how quickly the finger moves or how much of it is in contact with the display. The Droid Eris and Nexus One were next with some erratic behavior with partial contact, while the Droid produced a similar effect no matter what contact

Synaptics Fuse concept hands-on
Good news and bad news: the good news is that we got to look at Synaptic's Fuse concept phone, which pairs capacitive touch overload with tilt sensing, squeeze sensing and a fair bit of haptics. The bad news is that Synaptics is holding off on showing the actual UI until MWC in February. So for now we've got a working prototype that demonstrates that the sensors really do work. It's an abstract affair, involving the formation of little 3D spheres that roll around on the screen and can be tweaked, pushed and generally confused by the various i

The new SE425 earphones are a completely redesigned version of the company’s prior dual-driver SE420s, with detachable cables, a new body style, and a more affordable price: $350. The e-Reader story of CES 2010
One major trend dominating CES 2010 is the massive uptick in manufacturers showing off e-reader devices, software and technology. Vendors of all sizes are here in Las Vegas introducing products they hope will capitalize on piqued consumer interest and the predicted growth in the e-book market in the year ahead.
The biggest (literally) and most impressive electronic ink devices at the show are easily the 8.5 x 11-inch Plastic Logic Que proReader and 11.5-inch (measured diagonally) Skiff Reader. Two touchscreen devices with integrated 3G targeting two totally different audiences. You won't know it by the product's official name, but this is the FLO TV appendage for the iPhone that's been teased since November last year. Combining a mobile TV receiver with Mophie's juice pack, this is 2mm thicker and noticeably heavier than the normal external battery pack. You can see comparison shots in the gallery below -- the red and black units are samples of the new peripherals while the white one is the standard Mophie hardware. Alas, no working FLO TV demos were available, but we were told the iPhone UI should be

Android 2.0.1 is apparently "on its way" for the Milestone already with users being advised to keep an eye on Moto's Facebook page for more details; as you might recall, this is the same version the phone's American cousin got a few weeks ago. MSI rolls out U135 netbook pre-loaded with SUSE Moblin
Dell may have been the first to experiment with Moblin on an Atom-based netbook for developers, but it looks like MSI is the first to actually get one intended for regular consumers out the door, with it now announcing that it's shipping a version of its U135 netbook pre-loaded with Novell's SUSE Moblin OS (version 2.1, of course). Apart from that, the netbook itself apparently remains the same as the U135 we got our hands on last month, which packed a 10-inch screen, a 1.66GHz Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 250G

Airnergy WiFi power system gives RCA a reason to exist (video)
We don't usually associate RCA with new and innovative technologies, but we think know they're on to something with its Airnergy power system, which harvests energy from WiFi signals. Shipping this summer, the pocketable dongle picks up WiFi signals from the air and manages to charge an internal battery through some magic inside. You don't have to connect to a network, you just have to be in a place that has signal, and it will automatically charge up. As if we weren't intrigued already, they told us that they're planning on building the tech into actual cellphone batteries, so you would theoretically never need to plug in again and your device would always be topped off. Yeah, we want.

MOTO gives straight advice on smartphone touchscreen quality
Like simple and unsophisticated tests? Here's one sure to generate some heated discussion. MOTO, a group of super brains that assists companies from startups to Microsoft in their product development, has devised a dead-simple test to measure the accuracy of touchscreen devices. The test involves slowly drawing a few diagonal lines across the display using any drawing program on your device. Straight lines are good -- stair-stepping is bad. Now, assuming the app isn't doing some kind of smoothing algorithm then what you see above is symbolic of the accuracy of the iPhone, Droid Eris, Droid, and Nexus One (moving left to right). We met with Morgan Venable, Senior Project Lead / Electical Engineer at MOTO, and saw this test performed live here at CES. Compelling stuff. Video after the break.

iPhone, Droid, Nexus One, and Eris capacitive touch screens compared
So smartphone hardware is smartphone hardware right? They probably all use the same capacitive touch screen parts from the same suppliers in China right?
Actually no. And this test from MOTO proves it. According to their (frankly a bit unscientific) tests, the capacitive touch screens from Motorola and HTC aren't nearly as accurate as the one that Apple uses in the iPhone. Whether this is related to software or hardware isn't certain, but it is clear that Apple's iPhone has a distinctive lead in touch screen accuracy, which in turn leads to a better touch and typing experience. Perhaps this is yet another example of Apple's hardware/software integration proving to be an advantage.

Qualcomm Mirasol display video hands-on in glorious 1080p
We just couldn't help ourselves. Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5.3 shown off very, very quietly
Say, for a moment, that you're Microsoft and you're on the cusp of releasing a version of the much-maligned Windows Mobile 6.5 that actually made it touch-friendly for once -- but like all WinMo versions before it, you're relying on carriers and manufacturers to wage an inexcusably slow, arbitrary, incomplete upgrade campaign. Wouldn't you think that quietly burying its launch amongst a sea of more interesting (and less controversial) products might be a good idea? Indeed, that appears to be the angle Microsoft is taking at CES by discreetly showing off a Toshiba TG01 and Pharos Traveller loaded with the long-rumored 6.5.3 with "tiles" along the bottom and finger-friendly adjustments throughout the UI. As far as we can tell, this truly is what 6.5 should've been -- in our quick l

According to reports this is a different sort of update, run from an application rather than installed separately, and after the first reboot the machine gets to the POST screen then nothing. Multiple users are complaining of this issue and one claims that Dell is shipping him a new motherboard to fix it. We're still waiting to hear back from Dell to confirm this either way (hello weekend!), and until then we'd advice sticking with your existing ver

USB 3.0 SuperSpeed gone wild at CES 2010, trumps even your new SSD
Just in case you didn't notice the arrow, that's a USB 3.0 cable up there, plugged into a USB 3.0 port, running in a Fujitsu laptop that is the first to pack integrated support for USB 3.0. How fast was it? On the other end of this one was a Buffalo external enclosure stuffed with an old-fashioned, platter-based hard disk, which still delivered perfectly absurd transfer rates of about 135MB/sec. When another, similar setup ran with an Intel SSD what happened the results were even more impressive: a few ticks over 200MB/sec. Yes, we're about to enter another dimension. A time when external drives are as fast as

Microsoft's Mediaroom 2.0 running on the Xbox 360
Hearing about using an Xbox 360 as set top box for IPTV providers like AT&T's U-Verse is one thing, but seeing it in action is another. As you can see from the video after the jump, the experience is very fluid and isn't what we'd describe as laggy even in the slightest bit. The 360 can act as a full blown client to the Mediaroom DVR which provides a pretty complete multi-room experience. As far as we could tell the entire experience was there as well, but then again we're not exactly experts on Mediaroom. Apparently one thing

Toshiba Unveils New SSD: 256 GB in a MacBook Air
Toshiba unveils new SSD models:
those new products are manufactured from NAND Flash chips engraved at 32 nm. Capacities depend on size of SSD:
from 64 to 512 GB for 9.5 mm 2.5" model
from 64 to 256 GB for 7 mm 2.5" model. This size seems to be the new standard format, as Intel chose it too for its X25 V2.
from 64 to 256GB for 5 mm 2.5" model. Size compatible for MacBook Air GF 9400M.
Hereafter is a table summarizing all the information:
They all deliver 250 MB/s in reading mode, write data (sequentially) at up to 180 MB/s and support TRIM command function. As Apple is getting its SSD usually from Toshiba, we can expect to get as BTO a 256 GB SSD for the MacBook Air and up to 512 GB SSD for the high-end MacBook Pro. To

Google launches Google Energy, hoping to bring more green energy to its datacenters
Of all the truly monumental advancements to human civilization that Google has provided for this great world, like enabling cached offline access to Gmail in Android devices, the company has done some nasty stuff too. It's worst offense (that we know about) is surely the massive drain on the nation's energy resources its data centers pull, but it's working to put things right, most recently with last month's formation of Google Energy, a spin-off that, Google hopes, will allow the company to more actively participate in national energy markets, purchasing more from renewables and thus

Toshiba bolsters 32nm mSATA SSD lineup, your future netbook nods approvingly
We like to think of 'em as the SSDs for the little guys, and we couldn't be happier to hear that they're getting bigger and bigger in terms of capacity. Toshiba introduced the first solid state drives to use the mini-SATA interface back in September of '09, and while those 32nm units were made available in 30GB and 62GB sizes, the pack rats weren't satisfied. Now, the company has introduced a 128GB flavor with an mSATA interface, offering up a maximum sequential read speed of 180MB/s and a maximum sequential write speed of 70MB/s. The 128GB modules are said be one-seventh the volume and one-eighth the weight of 2.5-inch SSDs, and in case that's not enough, the thir

Sennheiser RS170 wireless headphones ears-on
We don't generally run around plucking wireless headphones off their stands, but the CES Innovation Award here drew us in for a quick test job. In spite of the almighty din around us, these RS170 headphones delivered terrific noise insulation. They don't feature any sort of active noise cancellation, but just popping the sealed cans atop our noggin was sufficient to neutralize a vast proportion of the mayhem around us. The sound too was impressive -- certainly nothing unexpected given Sennheiser's reputation. What was pleasantly surprising, though, was the $300 asking price and since these are already available we've been able to find them online for as little as $250. Apple tablet to have multi-touch iWork, many gestures?
Apple may intend for its rumored tablet to have more serious productivity value and control schemes if a late rumor is true. A previous Apple designer claims that his one-time employer has been developing a multi-touch version of iWork for the past two years. He doesn't indicate to the New York Times whether it's explicitly for a handheld device or just for Macs that have multi-touch trackpads or future ones with touchscreens.

Nexus One may cost less than iPhone 3GS to build
The HTC-made Google Nexus One may not cost any more than an iPhone 3GS to make, iSuppli has revealed in a preliminary cost teardown. Based on the components either known or believed to be part of the design, the researchers estimate the phone's raw parts cost $174, or $5 less than the $179 16GB iPhone 3GS did when new. The lower cost comes despite a potentially faster processor, a larger and AMOLED-based touchscreen as well as more RAM.

FaceVsion announces TouchCam N1 Skype HD webcam
In Store Solutions might have been the first to announce the first Skype HD webcam, but it looks like FaceVsion (yes, it's really spelled that way) isn't about to let it get off that easy, with it now introducing its own first Skype HD-ready TouchCam N1 webcam. As with In Store Solutions' cams, this one packs an embedded H.264 video compression chip to help out with 720p video streaming, and it includes dual unidirectional mics to ensure that the video isn't let down by sub par audio. Look for this one to be available sometime next month for $99 -- or just $69 if you want one without a mic.

FCC chariman echoes commissioner's sentiments, says Verizon's ETF response 'raised more questions than it answered'
FCC chairman and general ass-kicker Julius Genachowski is siding with his commissioner Mignon Clyburn this week, noting that Verizon's response to the Fed over its $350 "advanced device" early termination fee didn't really satisfy everyone's curiosity. He's not ready to talk about the FCC's next move in the case -- we're guessing another lengthy open letter is in order -- but he assured media on hand that "the bureau is looking into" the situation. In the meantime, just don't get tired of that Droid too fast, alright?

Google support forums rife with Nexus One 3G complaints, is this a real problem?
What started out as a few tips on 3G issues for Google's Nexus One seems to have ballooned into a fair bit of drama at Google's support forums. The main complaint appears to be owners reporting that their device either never switches to 3G, or, it is constantly switching between 3G and EDGE. Many users are also posting that switching out to another manufacturer's set yields great 3G reception where they're testing, and others have chimed in that the service on their phones has been spotless. Workarounds have already started popping up, starting with installing "Any Cut", creating a shortcut for activity -> phone info, select

LG Rumor Touch hands-on
LG launched another Rumor set on Sprint yesterday: the LG Rumor Touch. As you all likely sussed from the name, this iteration brings touchscreen -- resistive -- to the mix and it also comes loaded with a pretty stellar keypad. The touchscreen is pretty sharp as well, both with the haptic feedback when using it, response to your finger's pokes, and the quality of the display itself. The feel of the set is a bit light, -- but it doesn't extend to cheap -- the slide is solid with nary a bit of rattle, and the fit where the device's various edges meet is good. A standout, while trivial, are the themes the Touch supports, whereby, depending on seas

Shuttle laptops hands-on
Shuttle's press announcement of its new mobile platform was accompanied by a booth's worth of demonstration units and we went over for a quick peek. What we saw was a selection of rather conventional looking machines -- certainly the new internal layout is not going to affect the way machines will look on the outside. There was an Atom N450 netbook in among the chunkier devices, which -- though they sported Shuttle branding and model names -- seem to be just sample machines to entice OEMs into picking up the Shuttle design. This was demonstrated best by the ridiculously creaky keyboard on one of the laptops and its hapless monitor frame. Closing and opening the lid led to the display casing splitting open (see

Viliv P3 is like the Zii Egg of devices that don't run Plaszma OS (hands-on)
When we approached the just-introduced Viliv P3, we were cautiously optimistic that we were looking at a phone. Needless to say, our hopes would go on to be mercilessly dashed, but in the wake of the carnage, we were still left with an intriguing PMP with a big AMOLED display and an 800MHz Cortex A8 processor. You could argue that the most compelling feature, though, is that it clocks in at just 9.8mm thick -- a full 1.7mm thinner than the Nexus One while still managing 800 x 480 resolution. It felt a little creaky, but we were assured that the unit on hand was an early prototype -- and honestly, we'd even be willing to take a little creakiness on a production model if you get this kind of thickness (or lack thereof) in return. It's also got 720p TV-ou

NUU Player runs Boxee on Atom
D-Link's Boxee Box might be the Tegra 2-powered star of CES, but it's not the only hardware running Boxee -- NUU Media's NUU player runs the grown-up version of XBMC on an Atom processor alongside some other custom apps. It's also got a 160GB local hard drive and runs a WebKit browser, compared to no local storage and Mozilla on the Boxee Box. What's more, there's also a Skype app and Bluetooth support, so you'll be able to make and take calls from the couch using a headset. Of course, all that means it'll cost "around $300" instead of the Box's "under $200" when it launches around March, but we know some of you might spend the extra coin for the more home theater-rack friendly form factor alone. Casio Exilim EX-FH100 hands-on in super-slow-mo

It does 10 megapixel stills, high speed burst capture and up to 1,000 FPS video. Like with other Casio models, the higher the frame rate, the lower the resolution, but you can get a full VGA image at 120 FPS. At $349 it's practically a bargain if you absolutely need to do slow motion, and while it's a bit chubby and heavy in comparison to "fashionable" point and shoots, it's plenty capable as a stills camera to keep this from being a one tri

Avner tells us the built-in browser IDs itself as essentially standard Mozilla, so we'll have to see if Hulu goes out of its way to block it --it's definitely still possible, but it'll take some work. Apart from that minor drama, we've got to say we're incredibly impressed -- the interface was lightning fast, the remote's keyboard felt great, and we're liking the Facebook / Twitter integration, which mines your feeds for videos posted by your frien

Nexus One gets a custom ROM
It's been but a week since the gang at Modaco rooted the Nexus One -- and what do we have here? A quick visit to the self-same forums today has revealed that the handset has a new custom ROM. Based on the 22607 release (in case you're curious), this bad boy sports many new and exciting features, including the Nano 2.09 text editor, wireless tether, Titanium Backup, Busybox 1.15.3, and more. Feelin' adventurous? Hit the source link to give it a go. And make sure you drop us a line and let us know how it goes. (You don't think we're going to be the first to try it, do you?)
[Thanks, Jules]

Alpine outs first receiver with BT, adds Pandora, more
At a booth tour of Alpineís new products at CES, we learned the company has released its first single-DIN car audio receiver with built-in Bluetooth support, the CDE-103BT. The functionality is powered by Parrot and users had to previously rely on a separate $180 accessory to add Bluetooth support to their Alpine head units. A dedicated ëPhoneí button on the receiverís faceplate lets users connect to their compatible phones.

Suppliers readying touchscreens, casings for Apple tablet
Parts are on the move for Apple's forthcoming tablet, say sources in contact with ABC News. Touchscreens are already believed to be shipping, mainly from manufacturing partner Wintek, but also from the lesser-known Taiwanese outfit TPK Solutions. Casings for the tablet are said to be the responsibility of AVY Precision Technology, which will allegedly start producing them soon.

Samsung and ATI team on SyncMaster MD230 mega-displays for wide-eyed gamers
When it comes to gaming, it's hard to overdo it on the display front. Sure, Samsung and ATI have given it their best shot with the new SyncMaster MD230 displays powered by ATI's updated Eyefinity6 tech, but somehow we'll still be hungry for more by the time next year rolls around. Still, the MD230 is pretty wild, with six-screen or three-screen configurations retailing for $3,099 and $1,899 respectively, with each screen running at 2560 x 1600 for a total of 12x the resolution of 1080p across the six displays in total. It obviously takes a brand new ATI card to accomplish this (and a little help from that beefy DisplayPort plug), but we're sure if you're willing to drop $3,099 on your display, you can scrounge up t

LG Lotus Elite hands-on: it's red, square, and marginally attractive
We saw the LG Lotus Elite launch yesterday and today we had a chance to play with it for a few minutes. Sure, we did poke a bit of fun at its strange styling, but, once in hand we were pleasantly surprised to find it's really no better. Though, the keyboard, both displays, and the UI are actually quite nice to use, so we'd wager this will likely be a pretty successful handset at the $99 price tag it launches at. What definitely stood out, though, was the ability to get at so many features via the external display and the swiveling camera -- that actually rotates with the hinge --
