Favi RIOLED-Q and RIOLED-V pico projectors launched: the future is bright, wireless
Looks like the world's still got appetite for some more pico projectors, as Favi's releasing a pair some time between late February and early March for prices yet unknown. First is the RIOLED-Q (pictured) which sports a pretty 800 x 600 native resolution at 50 lumens -- supposedly the best brightness in class (like the Optoma PK301), along with built-in SD / MMC card reader, battery, three-watt stereo speaker and an ever-so-handy digital keystone correction. Filmapps – der neue Trend?
Zugegeben, sie sind nicht aktuell, die Qualität ist schlecht und es sind auch keine besonderen Titel und selbst den Niedrig Preis von nur 0,79 Cent sind sie eigentlich auch nicht wert.

EverTune challenges Robot Guitar for in-tune supremacy
Gibson's Robot Guitar may have gotten off to a head start, but EverTune is here at CES with an automatic guitar tuner of its own that promises to keep your guitar in tune forever. To do that, EverTune makes use of a simple mechanism that relies on springs to maintain the same amount of tension on each string as the tuner post loosens, which should ensure that your guitar won't go out of tune even while playing (something that other self-tuning guitars can't account for). Unfortunately, EverTune isn't ready to announcing anything about availability (or pricing, for that matter), but it saying it will "soon be available on a wide range of electric guitars," and that it'll also be available as an installation kit through select retailers.

Galileo sat-nav system back on the map, said to be 'up and running' by 2014
Remember Galileo, Europe's proposed GPS-like satellite navigation system? It's back in the headlines, and according to the Telegraph, UK-based Surrey Satellite Technology and Germany's OHB System have jointly secured €566 million (that's $815 million in US currency) to build 14 more satellites. The funding continues until 2013, whereby 22 satellites will be order. Full satellite navigation requires 27, and ultimately the European Union wants 32 technological waypointers. Launch date? Apparently 2014 -- we're hopeful, but this road has been wrought with delays before.

Study finds cellphone use may fend off effects of Alzheimer's disease
Could cellphone radiation actually be good for you and bad for you at the same time? It might, according to a group of researchers at the University of South Florida, who say that tests on mice suggest that long-term cellphone use might actually help fend off some of the effects of Alzheimer's disease. That, as you might have suspected, is the exact opposite of what the researchers expected to find, and they say that exposure to electromagnetic waves from cellphones could both prevent some of the effects of Alzheimer's if the exposure is introduced in early adulthood, or potentially even reverse some of the impairment among those already memory-impaired. Aircell to start in-flight video download service later this year
Aircell may have skipped out on having a presence at CES this year, but that doesn't mean that nothing is going on in the wide, wacky world of in-flight internet. Jelfin ball-shaped mouse hand-on
Some wanted to call the Jelfin ball-shaped mouse a crapgadget, but that was until they wrapped their hands around the spherical mouse. We aren't saying the Jelfin is the best mouse in the world or that it makes you forget about your mouse-woes -- that's if you've even ever had them -- but the gel covered ball is comfortable. At first it was a bit odd to navigate our MacBook Pro 13's desktop with a ball in hand, but we got the hang of it. But while we like the feel of the buttons, which are differentated with raised gel lines, they don't have enough give and we had to press too hard to double click. Er projiziert HD-Video mit einer einem Mini-Projektor entsprechenden Qualität an die Wand - und verbirgt unter der geschwungenen Hülle einen PC und ein DVD-Laufwerk. Don't call it a docking station. Toshiba's latest Dynadock is classified as a USB port replicator, but what makes this one a wee bit special is the integrated DisplayLink DL-165 chip that enables 1080p content to flow from a USB port and onto a DVI monitor. Put simply, this device acts just like a typical USB docking station, but with minimal bulk; as for inputs, you'll find four USB 2.0 sockets, a single DVI port, mic in, headphone out, a power port and support for resolutions as high as 1,920 x 1,080. There's a lot going on at CES, and one of those things was a presentation by Disney explaining its KeyChest concept. We attended and was surprised to learn that KeyChest has almost nothing to do with DRM. We were rolling our eyes when we heard Disney proclaim that KeyChest was complementary to DECE, but now that we understand what KeyChest is, we agree. CES 2010: Intels Infoscape-HD-Wand (mit Video)

Auch wenn Intel leider nicht vor hat, diese über eine einzige Core i7-Maschine gesteuerten Infoscape-Wände irgendwie zu kommerzialisieren - den Zweck, CES-Besucher in ihren riesigen Messestand zu locken, haben die ca. 2,13 m messenden Touch-Panels (jeder mit einer Auflösung von 1920 x 1920) bestens erfüllt. Wie ihr im Video nach dem Break gleich selbst überprüfen könnt, ploppten die Fenster selbst bei gleichzeitiger Berührung von mehreren der bis zu 576 Liveinfo-Boxen fröhlich weiter.

Spieleklassiker Paperboy für’s iPhone
Mit Paperboy schaffte es nun ein weiterer Spiele-Klassiker in den AppStore. Paperboy dürfte wohl den meisten Zockern aus den 80er ein Begriff sein. Im Spiel übernimmt man die Rolle eines Zeitungsjungen, welcher auf seinem BMX-Fahrrad im Wettlauf gegen die Zeit Zeitungen ausfahren muss. Dabei gilt es noch auf zahlreiche Hindernisse wie z.B. Passanten, Hunde und sonstige Gegenstände zu achten. Zur Steuerung steht ein virtuelles Steuerkreuz zur Verfügung, welches am Anfang jedoch ein wenig gewöhnungsbedürftig ist.

Twirling battery concept promises a quick power fix
We've seen plenty spinning, twirling, and wind-up gadgets from Sony and others, but nothing quite like this battery concept designed by Song Teaho and Hyejin Lee. While there's still a bit of work to be done with the actual "working" part, the concept is to simply let you twirl your cellphone battery around your finger a few times for a quick bit of juice to send a text or make a call -- the designers estimate 130 twirls will give you two minutes of talking time. Of course, the same idea could also be applied to batteries for other devices, although you'd probably have your work cut out for you trying to charge your laptop battery.

Von Inbrics kommt dieses "fast-ultimative" Android-Handy. Das Inbrics M1 ist eine Slider-Phone mit einem (großartigen) 3,7-Zoll-WVGA AMOLED-Display, einer 3 Megapixel-Kamera hinten, einer VGA-Kamera vorne, 16GB internem Speicher und microSD-Slot. Wirklich erstaunlich aber ist, dass die QWERTZ-Tastatur, obwohl das Phone in der Tiefe weniger als einen halben Zoll (also ca. 1,25 cm) misst, dennoch angenehm zu bedienen ist. Essentially, these Canadian sticks are WiFi dongles covering 802.11a/b/g/n, but the magic lies in their ability to let your computers appear as one USB mass storage device for devices like gaming consoles, digital frames and hi-fi stereos. Microvision bringt neuen Mini-Beamer für iPods
Von Microvision kommt ein neuer Mini-Beamer mit Anschlussmöglichkeiten für videofähige iPods und diverse andere Geräte. Das iPhone wird offiziell nicht unterstützt, dürfte allerdings ebenso wie der iPod touch anzuschließen sein.
Mit nur 14 Millimetern Höhe und einer Grundfläche von 6 x 12 Zentimetern ist der SHOWWX Pico-Projektor nur unwesentlich größer als ein iPod touch und produziert ein maximal 2,5 Meter breites Bild mit 848 x 480 Pixeln Auflösung. Der integrierte Akku versorgt das Gerät etwa 90 bis 120 Minuten, lädt über USB und kann vom Anwender getauscht werden.
Microvision sieht den Einsatz des kleinen Projektors vor allem bei Präsentationen im Geschäftsbereich, aber auch ein Campingausflug mit dem Zelt als Leinwand wird als Anwendungsbeispiel aufgeführt. MSI Projector PC proof-of-concept in the flesh
MSI is sure in a conceptual mood at this year's the CES, and one of the odder combinations was this Projector PC. The unit pumps HD video onto a wall at about the quality of a mini projector (though certainly a step above a pico), but for convenience's sake it has a PC and DVD drive built right in. MSI plans to pair it with a wireless mouse and keyboard for living room use, but we're still not sure we see a huge advantage over plugging a nettop into a projector -- outside of the novelty factor, of course. Pure's WiFi-enabled radios are making their US debut here at CES, and we've gotten to grips with the top trio on offer. The Oasis (pictured above) is a weatherproofed, rubber-rich unit, which can resist splashes of water and go on for between 10 and 15 hours on a single charge. We agree it looks like a durable machine, but -- while it can reach some pretty high volumes -- the sound itself was predictably lacking at the furthest ends of bass and treble. It will have taken more than 2 months for Apple to finally start improving availability availability of iMac 27" models. Distributors are finally able to have some stocks and resellers can finally ship models that have been purchased weeks if not months ago, especially for an iMac 27" powered by an Intel Core i5. It is never too late, but if we think that new MacBook/MacBook Pro as well as Mac Pro are expected in the coming weeks, we expect that Apple was able to secure availability in a more reliable way than it was done for the iMac 27" Core i 5 and i7. We are aware that Apple had to deal with the issue of broken glass display, but it does not explain everything.

You know how much we love gadgets, right? With gadgets like the TV Ears TV, our love is easily recognizable. We had a chance to go ears and eyes on with the rig at CES. Wearing the dangling headset wasn't like walking on a cloud, but the volume was easily adjustable using the chin strap. We didn't get a chance to try out the Jitter-Bug-esque remote, but we're guessing that using the dongle is a walk in the park. If you've kept even a loose eye on our CES coverage this year, you'd know that 3D is firmly "in." But our main gripe is that the glasses requirement makes it largely impractical for in-home use. Sony's noise-canceling earphones US-bound in February
You didn't have to wait until now to pick up Sony's MDR-NC300D noise-canceling earphones -- after all, they've been imported from Japan since their June debut. Palm chief has "never even used" an iPhone
Palm chief Jon Rubinstein in an interview at CES asserted that he doesn't compare his company's products against those of Apple's. He notes that the company's executives "donít pay that much attention" to their rivals in nearby Cupertino and that he personally hasn't owned an iPhone to compare against. Intel Infoscape HD wall brings real-time web visualization (hands-on)
We hate to dampen your excitement right from the get-go, but Intel confessed that it has absolutely no plans of commercializing something like this itself -- but that's not to say someone else couldn't grab a Core i7 and run with the idea themselves. Etymotic is holding down fort in the iLounge Pavilion at CES showcasing its new line of less expensive moving-coil based headphones. The mc-series consists of the hf2, hf3, and hf5, and employs the moving-coil sound tech instead of more expensive balanced armiture hardware. As Etymotic explained, it's the extra air chamber that makes the moving coil acoustics better than they would normally be. Inbrics M1 is the thinnest Android slider we've seen, probably everything we ever wanted
We don't know what everybody else in the phone business has been doing lately, but Inbrics has just unveiled what looks to be the near-ultimate Android phone. The Inbrics M1 is a slider handset with a (great) 3.7-inch WVGA OLED display, 3 megapixel camera, front-facing VGA camera, 16GB of built-in storage, microSD slot and all the other usual trimmings, but what's particularly stunning is that the phone is not only half an inch thick, but it has a full QWERTY keyboard that's surprisingly clicky and typable. Update der Facebook-App für iPhone
Die kostenlose iPhone- und iPod touch-App von Facebook ist binnen kurzer Zeit gleich zweimal aktualisiert worden. Das erste Update brachte als wirkliche Neuerung eine Push-Benachrichtigung bei Neuigkeiten auf dem eigenen Facebook-Profil sowie eine Sync-Funktion zwischen Facebook-Freunden und iPhone-Adressbuch. Mit einem wenige Stunden später herausgegebenen Update auf Version 3.11 sind dann anscheinend Fehler behoben worden.

Even the most exuberant fan of 3D displays and tablets has to admit to feeling a tiny bit jaded at this point. To sate the need for variety we went off exploring the quirkier booths and located this head-mounted video and stills camera being demonstrated by Liquid Image. We laid hands on a non-functional prototype, but as far as feel and comfort go, the few seconds we had these on led to no complaints. There's an overwhelming amount of padding around the eyes, probably kinda important when you're flying down the hills, and a tint to the visor keeping sunlight at bay. VIZIO at CES launched wide range of new TVs, including its first 3D and portable sets. The XVT Pro series now includes sets from 47 to 72 inches that support 3D from Blu-ray and TV. Vuzix Wrap 920AR face-on: reality just got weird
CES 2010 is awash in a sea of ridiculous 3D glasses, but that's nothing compared to the insanity of the Vuzix 920AR, an $800 set of augmented reality specs with cameras built into the lenses. Sadly, the 1504 x 480 display just isn't very impressive: we certainly saw a stereo 3D image, but it was grainy, dark, and generally unusable for anything apart from the augmented reality maze game on demo. Walking down the street with these things on your face would be incredibly dangerous, as far as we can tell. Sometimes life on the Apple rumour mill is exciting, sometimes frustrating and sometimes, well, let’s just say from time-to-time it’s comedy gold - and this is one of those moments because some tipster somewhere has achieved international attention with their observation that Apple’s maybe soon to ship tablet has “a good bit of new sexy to it”.

Apple developing new atrium-style retail store (with trees!) concept
We’re beginning to think Apple never sleeps, as news comes in claiming the company is about to revise the already extremely successful retail formula it has been running on high streets worldwide.
Mercury News tells us the company intends construction of a new prototype store in downtown Palo Alto, where it is about to move its existing store to a larger space - and there’ll be trees inside the shop.

CES: AT&T loses a little more face
So, there’s been a constant hubbub of complaints at AT&T and its network provision for the iPhone, now attendees at giant US tradeshow, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas seem terribly frustrated at the network’s patchy service.
The news comes as AT&T announced it will carry 5 Android phones in 2010 and that it might get around to roll out faster 3G speeds as they begin to upgrade cell site backhaul connections over the course of 2010 and 2011. Oh, and iPhone tethering like Verizon gives you out of the box on the Palm Pre Plus? No word yet.

Apple execs seek LED flash components for future iPhones?
That’s the problem with the iPhone’s camera - not only is it pretty low res at 3.2-megapixels, but it captures terrible snaps in low lighting conditions. Fortunately, it seems Apple management are on the case, preparing to add a flash to the camera for better picture taking.
The company is apparently casting its net for “significant quantities” of LED camera flash components, which at least one website speculates is for the iPhone and (possibly) iPod touch.

CES: Imagination announces POWERVR SGX545 graphics core, potentially next iPhone graphics chip
Imagination Technologies, a partially Apple (and Intel)-owned UK firm that has been providing the graphics chips for every iPhone to date, announced their latest graphics core today. The POWERVR SGX545 ups output capabilities to 40 million polygons/sec (up from previously 26 million) and resolution to 1080P with high framerates (60FPS?) and 3G graphics.
SGX545 will also deliver OpenGL ES 2.x and OpenGL 3.2 to deliver class leading 3D graphics performance, and will also support OpenCL 1.0 full profile capabil

Tablet will have 'aluminium' casings, Q2 launch says Reuters
According to Reuters, the pieces are literally coming together for Apple's new Tablet. Kelvin Soh says two 'sources familiar with the situation' expect a Q2 launch -- which has been reported before. He does, however, say that the casings will be made of aluminum (or the British: aluminium) which would imply that they might be more 'Unibody' looking than current iPhones which have plastic backsides.
Suppliers for Apple Inc's new tablet computer have begun shipping touchscreen panels and will start delivering aluminium casings for it next month, sources said, implying a second-quarter product launch.

US digital sales boom - and vinyl comes for the ride!
Vinyl sales hit a historical high last year as US music purchases climbed 2.1 percent year on year and digital sales accounted for 40 percent of total US music purchases, Nielsen SoundScan confirmed today, up from 32% in 2008.
The news follows an August 2009 NPD Group report which confirmed iTunes-purchased songs now account for 25 percent of the overall music market--both physical and digital - in the U.S..
(During the first half of 2009, iTunes itself snagged a 69 percent share of the overall digital music arena, trailed far behind by Amazon.com with 8 percent - this may have changed but we haven’t yet sourced recent relevant data).
Nielsen also note that 10 billion music purchases were made in the US during the last decade (ie, music is not dead). The researchers also provided a dizzying selection of statistics, confirming

Apple preps MultiTouch iWork for Fingerworks-controlled Tablet/slate
Apple isn’t simply plotting a course toward introduction of the “good bit of new sexy” that is the much-vaunted tablet device - the company also intends releasing a touch-controlled version of iWork for the system, along with a small forest of content and media services it has been gathering in preparation for launch.
An article from the NY Times indicates that Apple has been busy working on a multitouch version of iWork, and this could mean that Apple could be envisioning its iSlate tablet more than just an eReader or giant iPod.

iPhone, Droid, Nexus One, and Eris capacitive touch screens compared
So smartphone hardware is smartphone hardware right? They probably all use the same capacitive touch screen parts from the same suppliers in China right?
Actually no. And this test from MOTO proves it. According to their (frankly a bit unscientific) tests, the capacitive touch screens from Motorola and HTC aren't nearly as accurate as the one that Apple uses in the iPhone. Whether this is related to software or hardware isn't certain, but it is clear that Apple's iPhone has a distinctive lead in touch screen accuracy, which in turn leads to a better touch and typing experience. Perhaps this is yet another example of Apple's hardware/software integration proving to be an advantage.

RED Scarlet and Bomb EVF surprise hands-on!
We just got a terrific surprise at the Engadget CES trailer: Ted Schilowitz from RED just popped in with a RED Scarlet and the Bomb EVF for a quick hands-on! Our video producer Chad Mumm basically attacked him, as did the rest of the crew -- pretty much everyone surrounded him as he pulled the Scarlet out of its pack. JVC outs four new headphones, updates four series for nano
JVC has released a new range of headphones at CES (CES Booth 8219) this week. The new HA-NC260 noise-canceling headphones have new circuity that monitors outside sounds and eliminates up to 90 percent of background noise, including feedback. Each earpiece has a dual housing structure for better sound insulation and memory foam cushioned ear pads help isolate background noise. The pair uses a 40mm neodymium driver in each earpiece.

Chances of Netflix on Nintendo 'excellent,' says Netflix CEO
In case you missed it last night in the All Things D event -- and frankly, given the length and general jejune of it, we wouldn't blame you -- Reed Hastings of Netflix took the stage and sat down with Peter Kafka. Here's the takeaway: when Kafka asked him the chance of "getting on Nintendo," Hastings replied, "our chances are excellent." MSI demos Tegra 2 tablet, dual-screen notebook
MSI at CES has rolled out a suite of new systems but notably has also trotted out a pair of prototypes signaling possible plans to get into tablet-class devices. At its booth, the company has been demonstrating a 10-inch tablet using the dual-core Tegra 250. While somewhat heavy, it runs Android and appears to be very responsive, if heavy compared to smaller tablets at the show. Spokespeople didn't have detailed specifications, but it should be capable of 1080p video courtesy of the processor.

Surely you remember the Coby MP836, the first touchscreen PMP from the low-end company that we had a bit of trouble with at last year's CES. Well, this year they're back at it again -- this time pimping the MP837, which really deserves more than a one digit jump. We're glad to report that they've made quite a bit of progress over the year, and that they've addressed many of the problems from the first one. We had a lot of fun hanging with the guys at the Electro Joe booth -- they definitely love their crapgadgets. Our favorite was a little something called Gimme Tunes, a pair of speakers in craptastic high heeled cases. These guys are powered by USB, but the audio input is a classic headphone jack. Super Talent unveils USB 3.0 RAIDDrive at CES
Super Talent has unveiled a new USB powered RAID storage system at CES, the RAIDDrive USB 3.0. The device offers transfer speeds over 300MBps when used with USB 3.0 supported systems -- five times the speed of USB 2.0 -- and is also backwards compatible with earlier USB ports. It should nonetheless be reliable, keeping data for 10 years or more, and uses a special USAP transfer protocol which is said to offer additional speed enhancements through bi-directional data transfers.

Samsung's new netbook line goes hands-on, Moblin makes a cameo
We don't know what it is, but there's just something a bit too "netbook" about Samsung's netbooks. We took a look at the new N210, NB30 and N150 models that Samsung is showing here at CES, and while there's nothing precisely wrong with any of them, they just felt a little uninspired. Like almost everybody these days, Samsung has moved to chiclet keys, which would be alright if they were as quality as previous generations of Sammy's netbook keyboards, but they just felt a little plastic and shallow. You know that snotty, slimy stuff that you can get in vending machines for a quarter? The stuff that comes in the little, clear plastic bubbles and stains wallpaper and carpet instantly?
