Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 scores mixed reception
By now you should be thoroughly familiar with Sony's Party-shot-loving and almost unreasonably svelte TX1 compact shooter. 3M unveils 3D panels for portable devices

Apple stores to use customized iPods for new checkout
Apple is reportedly developing a new checkout system based on the iPod touch, according to an ifoAppleStore report posted on AppleInsider. The "EasyPay touch" configuration consists of an iPod case integrating a barcode scanner, additional battery cells and a magnetic stripe reader. AT&T sues Verizon over "There's a Map for That" campaign
AT&T is suing Verizon because it believes the "There's a Map for That" advertising is misleading. AT&T contend that the maps shown confuse the customer into believing there is no coverage at all in the white spots on AT&T's map when in fact there is either EDGE or GPRS service in those areas.
Maybe those attorney fees would be better spent on adding towers/capacity and working on that map, AT&T?

CNET.uk says the iPhone is the "Worst Phone EVAR"
Even though it is the highest rated mobile phone on their own site, they say, as a phone, it is the worst. They cite poor mic and speakers, dropped or unreachable calls a a host of other issues.
It may be the highest-rated mobile phone on CNET UK, rocking the pockets of half of our crack editorial team. It's certainly the touchscreen face that launched a thousand apps. But as an actual call-making phone, it's rubbish, and we aim to prove it.
Strange because we don't have iPhone connectivity issues over here in the US?

South Korean taxi drivers win right to watch TV in cabs, for now
You know, we've made plenty of jokes about the DMB mobile TV functionality found in seemingly every GPS unit released in South Korea, but it looks like taxi drivers in the country take their distractions seriously -- serious enough to go to court. That issue apparently came to a head recently when one cab driver challenged a $500 fine he received for watching TV while on the job, which had apparently become a relatively common means to beat boredom during traffic jams but was banned last year by a local regulation in the city of Seoul. While the court obviously didn't go so far as to condone the practice (watching TV while driving was apparently a factor in upwards of 200 accidents in the country last year), it did rule that the regulation in Seoul wa

LaCie on Tuesday revealed its latest storage solution, the Network Space 2 Network Attached Storage (NAS) and media server. Again designed by Neil Poulton like many of LaCie's similar products, the Network Space 2 is user friendly thanks to the preloaded LaCie Network Assistant. This allows users to customize the dashboard with widgets, which let them access networks and drive information as well as user accounts and drive capacity.

iPhone now makes up 33% of all touchscreen phones
The iPhone now represents almost exactly one third of all touchscreen phones in the US, new comScore info says. Of all touch phones in the country, 32.9 percent are iPhones while all others trail significantly behind. Most of the runners-up are Verizon devices and include the LG Dare and Voyager at 8.7 and 7.8 percent respectively. The BlackBerry Storm has just seven percent, while the T-Mobile G1 is both the most popular Android and T-Mobile phone on the list with 3.6 percent.

Sorenson Squeeze 6 makes performance improvements
Sorenson has launched Squeeze 6, an upgraded version of its video encoding tool. AT&T CruiseCast satellite service halts activations, will refund customers
It wasn't too hard to see this one coming after reports of "financial difficulties" and a potential early demise starting cropping up last month, but it looks like AT&T's CruiseCast in-car satellite service is now officially done for. AT&T sues Verizon over 'there's a map for that' ads
Whoa -- we just got word that AT&T is suing Verizon for false advertising over Big Red's "There's a map for that" ads. We're reading the complaint and motion to stop the ads right now, but here's what AT&T says is the big problem:
In essence, we believe the ads mislead consumers into believing that AT&T doesn't offer ANY wireless service in the vast majority of the country. Bang & Olufsen's BeoVision 10 orders up the 'hands-on special'
Bang & Olufsen may be irrelevant to those with annual salaries having fewer than six digits to the left of the decimal (or comma, if that's how you roll), but even the laypeople can't help but drool at a spectacle such as this. The BeoVision 10 has just landed down across the pond at Electric Pig, and they were kind enough to snap a few shots and show 'em to the world. Rumors reappear of NVIDIA making x86 chips
Broadpoint AmTech analyst Doug Freedman today revived talk of NVIDIA making its own x86 processors in a new research note. He claims that the graphics company has been recruiting "extensively" from employees of the one-time chip designer Transmeta and is using these to speed along one or more unknown designs. It may also not need to use Transmeta-like code translation as many of the original x86 architecture patents lose their effectiveness.

Hacker attempts to extort Dutch iPhone owners
A hacker in the Netherlands has attempted to extort several iPhone owners, reports say. The hacker is believed to have used port scanning to identify T-Mobile-branded phones running SSH, commonly used in jailbreaking techniques. Because many people do not change the default root password on jailbroken devices, the hacker was able to take control of iPhones, and send custom text messages warning them to visit a website in order to resecure their firmware.

NI intros Traktor Kontrol X1 controller for DJ software
Native Instruments on Tuesday introduced the Traktor Kontrol X1, a new controller for DJ software. BlackSn0w jailbreaks iPhones with 05.11.07 baseband
Blackra1n coder George Hotz has released blacksn0w, a new jailbreaking utility that unlocks iPhone firmware v3.1.2 and the latest baseband v05.11.07. The tool now allows users to upgrade to v3.1.2 from older firmware without losing the unlock. The process also enables tethering, allowing the handset to be used as a computer-connected modem even on carriers, such as AT&T, that still block the function.

GSM Palm Pre unlocked with a little Rebel assistance
It's not exactly the native unlock we've been waiting for, but those of you in Europe dying for a Pre unshackled from O2 will be happy to know that the Rebel Simcard II is now compatible with Palm's first webOS device. The £10.99 / $17.95 accessory card slots in between your carrier's SIM and the Pre's SIM slot, bypassing the Pre's network locks and allowing full access to voice and data services including 3G. Sadly, the Pre doesn't have the radio support to make this work in the States on anything but EDGE, but at least it's a start, right? Video after the break.

Font problems and management in OS X
I've run across a variety of situations both personally and on discussion threads where seemingly normal systems will suddenly start showing odd behavior, including slow application launch times, extensive login times, or just specific functions of a program (ie, menu access) not working. Many times bizarre system behaviors such as these in addition to obvious problems such as distorted or garbled text may be nothing more than a problem with fonts; however, tackling font problems can be one of the most tedious and frustrating ventures.

Uh, Archos? You do remember telling us that your Archos 9 media tablet would ship on October 22nd for $499 back in late September, right? 'Cause if our eyes are being truthful to us, that's not at all what's happening here. Verizon announces early store openings for DROID launch

America's Apple and Orange, a division of France Telecom, have formally dropped an arrangement for exclusive French iPhone sales, says Dow Jones. OLPC shakeup: dual-screen XO-2 out, ARM-based XO 1.75 in
OLPC's plans for a dual-screen XO-2 laptop / tablet always seemed a little ambitious, and it looks like even Nicholas Negroponte himself has now realized that it may be more than the organization is able to pull off at the moment. Philadelphia set to gain first Apple Store
Apple is on the verge of building the first Apple Store within Philadelphia proper, writes Metro. The newspaper notes that design plans for the outlet are today scheduled to be reviewed by the city Art Commission, but most likely to be approved. European Space Agency launches flood-predicting, earth monitoring satellite
On Sunday (the first of November) the European Space Agency launched a new satellite from a Russian rocket. This one, named the European Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite has a few very important jobs to do. For the next 3-5 years, the satellite will gather data about the circulation patterns in Earth's oceans and the moisture in its soil. O2 hat seine mobilen Datentarife "Data-Pack-Volume-200" und "Data-Pack-Volume-500" für Geschäftskunden überarbeitet. New Meizu M8 firmware clones Android, iPhone 3.0
Meizu's M8 phone is about to undergo a major overhaul that draws on interface elements from at least three major operating systems, a copy of leaked firmware shows. Version 1.0.0.1 will shift its attention more towards Android with an app launcher much like Google's. However, that launcher will also be available directly from the drag-to-unlock screen and like Windows Mobile 6.5 will let users unlock directly to the phone or e-mail apps instead of visiting a home screen. Nokia Siemens Networks will rund 5000 Mitarbeiter entlassen
Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) hat Kostenreduzierungen um 500 Millionen Euro bis 2011 angekündigt. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, sollen mindestens 4500 und bis zu 5760 Mitarbeiter entlassen werden. Weiteres Geld will das Management durch den günstigeren Einkauf von Material und Leistungen einsparen. Early China Unicom iPhone sales underwhelm
China Unicom has only acquired a little over 5,000 iPhone subscribers since officially introducing the device last weekend, according to Reuters. Nearly 300 people attended a Friday launch ceremony at a Unicom store in Beijing, but actual sales have been marginal, paling in comparison to other countries. Windows 7 sends PC sales up 40% in first week
The launch of Windows 7 has triggered at least a temporary spike in PC sales, Morgan Stanley analyst Katheryn Huberty says in an investment note issued yesterday. Pointing to NPD sales data, the researcher notes that computer sales jumped about 40 percent during the week of Microsoft's OS launch compared to the same time a year earlier. The number is partly offset by buyers holding off on purchases during the previous two weeks, when sales dropped 29 percent and then 2 percent versus 2008, but is well above earlier weeks, when sales were up by at most 19 percent.

EA Mobile has released four new iPhone and iPod touch applications on Apple's App Store: NBA Live, EA Sports FIFA 10, Mystery Mania, and Boggle. NBA Live is a basketball game where players take control and play against authentic NBA teams in a variety of modes. Features include the ability to unlock and add legendary characters to a team, fifteen different music tracks to choose from, and the ability to control the players via the virtual analog stick or accelerometer. Der am Donnerstag veröffentlichte Erfahrungsbericht zum neuen iMac 21,5" ist nun abgeschlossen. Nach mehreren Tagen im Einsatz weiß das Gerät wirklich zu begeistert. Orange UK takes flak over iPhone data policies

Sony's PSPgo sells 28,000 units on first day in Japan, physical media points and laughs
Remember the "platform sales boost" that Sony was tauting after the PSPgo's release in the US? The question on everyone's minds was of course how much of that boost was buoyed by the new kid on the block, and while Sony still hasn't given us any domestic figures (nor will it ever, probably), we now know that the thing sold 28,000 units on its first day of availability on its home turf in Japan. China Ontrade präsentiert aktuell ein Bauteil für das “iPhone 4 Generation Midboard”, eine Mittelplatte für ein möglicherweise in Zukunft kommendes iPhone. Unlimited-limited fail: Orange UK iPhone deal may ban Facebook, Spotify
Hopes that moving into a multi-carrier strategy in the UK would generate a price war have been dashed by Orange’s announcement of price tariffs matching those of O2. Now the story takes a tragic turn, with the revelation that Orange’s terms and conditions for iPhone service suck too much - even use of Facebook and Spotify could be forbidden under these.
Not just that, but Orange seems happy to use the word “unlimited” in relation to a limited data service with a 750MB cap (so, like, 375 emails with a picture). While it may be permitted to use that word in that way under UK 21st century doublespeak advertising law may be true, but most of us can tell when unlimited doesn’t mean unlimited.

Atheros brings 802.11n to cellphones with AR6003, is one antenna short of a pair
802.11n is a wonderful thing, providing 144Mbps bandwidth and reliable connections over impressive distances, but part of that wonder comes thanks to a reliance on dual antennas. Twice the antennas means twice the streams (MIMO, ya dig?), but Atheros has decided to ditch one for its new mobile-friendly AR6003 chip. It's a power-saving move called "one-stream 11n," and while we've seen it before that doesn't mean we have to like it. PowerPad: Kabellose Ladematte fürs iPhone
Das PowerPad von GEAR4 lädt iPhones zukünftig kabellos per Induktion, das iPhone muss dazu lediglich in die dezente Ladeschale gelegt werden. Der Trick dabei ist die mitgelieferte Schutzhülle: diese überträgt den Ladestrom über einen integrierten Dockanschluss-Stecker ans iPhone.
Der Vorteil dieser extravaganten Ladestation ist sicherlich der geringe Platzverbrauch und die mit der Ladeform einhergehende Bequemlichkeit: iPhone zusamme mit dem Schlüssel aufs Schränkchen gepfeffert und gut.
Der angepeilte Verkaufspreis von 99 Euro lässt allerdings schlucken, denn dafür bekommt man eine ganze Reihe Ladegeräte, die sich nebenbei als hervorragendes Soundsystem nutzen lassen (und auch als solche vermarktet werden). Did Apple Start to Fight Against Hackintosh
Yesterday, a website was reporting that Apple massively modified CPU related information in Mac OS X 10.6.2 with one direct effect on Hackintosh based on Intel ATOM CPU. According to the website, this was a direct attack against Hackintosh. This site even reported about a forthcoming 10.5.9 that would also break support for ATOM.
Among changes in CPU information, Apple removed the compatibility layer for ATOM in the new kernel. It is true that the number of hackintosh exploded with the release of cheap ATOM-based hardware and the compatibility of Mac OS X 10.5 for ATOM. Some voices on the net start claiming that removing support for ATOM would target Hackintosh on purpose. This is a bit short-minded we think. Indeed, Apple might have included support for ATOM when the CPU became available as the company might have thought to use it in one of its device (Apple TV). But then,

Dell Mini 3iX has WiFi, 3G, and a number of leaked UI photos
You know what's ridiculous? Modern smartphones without WiFi (why hello there, Pixi and Tour). Jailbreakers that don't change thier
Here's the short version: You jailbreak your iPhone and SSH access is opened on it. If you don't change your password, a hacker knows your login and password and can log into your iPhone (or iPod touch). A Dutch hacker takes this a bit further by throwing up an SMS popup after breaking into unsecured iPhones and asking €5 for instructions on how to secure the iPhone. We'll save you €5 -- do a restore.

Tweetie 2.1 to bring updated retweets, geolocation support
Following the recent release of Tweetie 2.0, developer Loren Brichter is almost ready to launch the next update, v2.1, which adds a variety of bug fixes and several new features. The app will support the new-style retweets, along with geolocation information, according to a preview posted by TechCrunch. Creative Zii EGG Android build demoed on video
We're still not entirely sure what Creative has planned for the Zii, but things appear to be going according to plan: as promised, an Android 1.6 installer for the Zii EGG developer unit was released today. Things are still pretty rough, however -- the camera doesn't work, and leftover bits of phone code like the signal strength icon are still present. Motorola MILESTONE does what DROIDon't
We've already seen the MILESTONE showing off multitouch capability, something the DROID clearly lacks in the States despite the fact that Android 2.0 rocks kernel support for it -- and now we've got another smoking gun: the official spec sheet. While the iPhone platform has proven attractive to game developers, e-books have begun to dominate the latest apps, according to data collected by Flurry. From August 2008 to August 2009, most of the new apps were released into the Games category. Windows 7 SP1 due in less than a year?
Despite having launched less than two weeks ago, Windows 7 is already on track to have its first service pack ready in less than a year, a timetable posted today suggests. Wzor, one of the sites that slipped out pre-release betas of Windows 7 earlier this year, says Microsoft is already aiming to release its first beta of Service Pack 1 to testers by December and to offer a public beta by January. After this and a second beta, Microsoft is scheduled have two release candidates and to release to manufacturing (RTM) as early as June or as late as August.

Wall of Sound is loud, prohibitively expensive, and somewhat defeats the purpose
You know the problem with most iPod docks? They're too compact, too convenient. Intel pushes the turbo to new heights
Ten days or so ago, we explained the operation of the Turbo mode of the Core i5 and Core i7 processors of the iMac. In short, Intel does not focus any more on frequency, but within the more general framework of the maximum thermal envelope of a processor and authorizes overclocking more or less according to the load of each one of their cores. Thus, the Core i7 runs normally at 2,8 GHz but can under certain conditions reach 3,46 GHz.However Intel now seems to want to go even further in this process, and even for low consumption processors.
