Are DVR's actually going to save the network TV model?

Small search bug in Preview for Snow Leopard
There is a small bug in Snow Leopard's Preview application that has to do with the search features of the program when finding text in PDF documents. When you look for a specific dollar amount in the PDF document, it will not only locate the search query but will also find irrelevant search results.

Verizon to topple AT&T, take smartphone lead?
A slip of new data today suggests Verizon may be planning a full assault on AT&T's command of the US smartphone market. One historically accurate contact for BGR says Verizon is watching its launch of the Motorola Droid very closely and, if successful, will accelerate smartphone launches it would have put off until early 2010. These would include particularly advanced devices like the Android-based HTC Dragon and Motorola Calgary, the former of which could launch on November 27th in place of the BlackBerry Curve2.

Sony VAIO L touchscreen humiliates presenter on live TV (video)
You know what they say in show biz: never work with children, animals, or gadgets. And if you must, make sure that you test drive your consumer electronics before going live. As you can see in the video (after the break), the kids on one overseas morning show failed to heed the last bit, to humorous results. For our part, we're inclined to believe that the unresponsiveness of the Vaio L All-In-One touchscreen herein is pilot error of some stripe, but either way the man on screen handled it like a real pro. Besides, we've seen far worse bloopers on Japanese television -- really, after the whole Yukio Mishima seppuku mess, it's hard for us to take any of this stuff too seriously. 'Baby and Me' special edition includes Wiimote-ready doll
A new, janktastic Wii title dubbed Baby and Me (not to be confused with the new 50 Cent song, "Baby by Me") is shipping in limited quantities as a special edition that actually includes a doll "accessory" in the box. The regular game is designed to work with the Wiimote attached to any old doll, but in case your child is looking for a premium fake baby experience, we suppose this special edition is the way to go. The actual game play includes motion sensitive baby-rocking, Balance Board support for teaching the child avatar to walk, and the sound of gurgles and burps output through the Wiimote's built-in speaker. iPhone continuing to gain enterprise support, says analyst
Despite resistance, the iPhone is slowly being adopted by more and more corporate enterprises, says Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank. The analyst estimates that approximately 2 million iPhones will be in enterprise use by the end of 2009, whether bought directly by IT departments or by workers receiving reimbursements. Such sales could give Apple a 7 percent marketshare, a substantial increase over the 2 percent achieved in 2008.

Atheros readies 802.11n chip for smartphones
Atheros claimed a minor breakthrough on Monday through a new addition to its ROCm chips. The AR6003 is billed as not just a rare single-chip 802.11n Wi-Fi part for smartphones and other handhelds but also the fastest of its kind. It takes advantage of features that aren't always used in 802.11n to boost the maximum speed up to 85Mbps in real situations when on the 5GHz band. The technique has the side benefit of increasing the usable range of a handheld compared to older 802.11g wireless.

Time changeover generates Snow Leopard problems
The flip from daylight savings to standard time has created unusual problems for Snow Leopard owners, Apple's support forums indicate. Some Mac users note that nearing the point of the official changeover, 2AM on November 1st, their CPU usage peaked as high as 100 percent for no apparent reason. Aside from rendering software unusable, such spikes also run the risk of overheating a computer.

Adobe talks a little smack on iPhone's inability to play Flash
If you try to go to a Flash site on your iPhone, you are often taken to Adobe's "Get Flash" page because the site thinks this is an option for you. It obviously isn't, of course. But for those who go to the "Get Flash" page on their iPhone, Adobe is adding some sass to their "iPhone doesn't support Flash" message.
This massage has been around for awhile (as far as we remember) but it has only lately specified iPhone. Perhaps to differentiate between mobile Webkit browser that support Flash like Android and Blackberry will and those that don't.

Real Time Race promises to let you race against the pros, in real time
There's certainly no shortage of impressive augmented reality games around these days, but it doesn't look like the folks behind the so-called Real Time Race will have any trouble turning a few heads with theirs, at least if they can actually deliver as promised. Their basic idea is to make use of some Google Street View-like technology to create a virtual reproduction of an actual race track, and pair it with some real-time data as the race is happening to let anyone that wants to take part in the race from the comfort of their home. Bell confirms HSPA for Nov. 4, iPhone to follow
Bell today confirmed that its promised HSPA+ 3G network will become available on November 4th. Supporting recent leaks, the 21Mbps network will launch just a day ahead of its Telus equivalent and should come with multiple phones and modems ready on the same day. Roaming deals will also be in effect immediately and should let Bell users roam on AT&T in the US as well as in most other countries.

Adobe engages Apple in passive aggressive warfare with iPhone's Flash message
Adobe's seemingly tried everything in its fight to get Apple to tear down enough development barriers to get Flash ported to the iPhone, culminating in a native compilation option in CS5 that well, really doesn't solve much of anything. Ongoing Snow Leopard issue: Finder Application cannot be opened (-10810)
As reported over a month ago here on MacFixIt, a growing number of users are still experiencing an issue with Finder freezing when attempting to connect to shared volumes or external hard drives and work with files from those drives. Users report the issue happening with SMB Shares, connecting to servers via Finder's "Connect to Server" function, and external storage devices such as Drobo drives.

Apple iTunes $30/month bid to take-on Hulu and cable
Remember all those rumours of Apple planning a subscription-based service for iTunes? The ones that began way back in 2005, when the company hired XBox Live staffer, Julia Miller?
Seems this chatter’s back again, with Peter Kafka’s MediaMemo claiming Apple to have been in talks with TV networks in an attempt to put together a $30 all-you-can-eat TV subscription service.

Apple pitching $30 a month TV service for iTunes to the networks?
According to Peter Kafka over at AllThingsD, he's had "multiple sources" tell him that Apple is shopping around a subscription service to TV networks that would give iTunes users a catch-all subscription for $30 a month. As far as he's heard, nobody's jumped on board just yet, and of course networks have to work out their typical fears of such a service cutting into ratings and biting into cable revenue. Someone on the big wide internet has the HP Compaq Mini 311 and did up an unboxing for us all to share in. Spoiler alert: the packaging is about as exciting as a shoe box, which is pretty unfortunate for such an exciting product. PlayStation Home 'not a priority right now' for Sony, most people seem to feel the same way

Analyst warns Droid will hurt BlackBerry, Palm
Citigroup analyst Jim Suva today signaled a major rethink of its approach to cellphone shares by downgrading both Palm and Research in Motion stock to a "sell" recommendation. Bell, Telus iPhone plans leaked?
Anonymous sources have leaked the iPhone plans of Canadian carriers Bell and Telus, a report claims. Bell is said to be launching on November 4th with three individual plans, beginning with one costing $55 per month. It includes 300 regular voice minutes, and free calling to local Fab 5 numbers as well as on evenings and weekends after 9PM. The plan also includes 1GB of data with tethering support, and unlimited Wi-Fi at Starbucks Coffee.

Sprint began the week by bringing its 4G WiMAX service into action for several key areas promised earlier. The Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth areas as well as several North Carolina cities, including Cary, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Durham, Greensboro, High Point, Raleigh and Winston-Salem, all now have access to the wide-area wireless. The carrier still promises downstream speeds of about 3Mbps to 6Mbps in real situations, all of which allow VoIP, video and other tasks normally off-limits to 3G.

Japanese team takes top prize at World Solar Challenge
A Japanese team from Tokai University has taken the top spot at the World Solar Challenge, which was held at the end of last week in Australia. The team beat out the Delft University team which won four consecutive previous Challenges, and this year took second place, with the third seat going to the University of Michigan. The race course travels from southern to northern Australia over 3,000 km (about 1864 miles), and the winning team's car, Tokai Challenger, completed the race in just under 30 hours, averaging 62 miles per hour. Other notable participants included the MIT-built Eleanor.

OSX 10.6.2 kills support for Atom processors, most NetBooks
Is Apple trying to squash the Hackintosh netbook movement with one mighty software update? According to OSX Daily, they are. 10.6.2 early build kernels don't support Intel's Atom chipset, which seem to indicate that 10.6.2 won't be able to be installed on most Hackintoshes without some "major" modifications. Most Netbooks run varients of Intel's Atom Processor.
This move would also indicate that Apple has no imediate plans to release a product based on Intel's Atom processors.

Moto Droid in Europe gets multi-touch
Motorola today confirmed an international version of the Droid that should also be the first Android phone with multi-touch. The Milestone uses a virtually identical design with an 854x480 touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, GPS and Wi-Fi but switches to GSM, EDGE and HSPA for basic calls, 2G and 3G respectively. It currently doesn't support US 3G bands but should be available through at least O2 Germany (PDF) for the equivalent of $596 without a contract but with a discount.

News: Intel chipset, Windows 7 causing iPhone sync problems
A combination of a certain Intel chipset and Windows 7 is leaving some iPhone users unable to sync their phones to their computers. According to a group of intrepid iPhone users on Apple’s Support forums, the problem appears to be caused by Intel’s P55 Express chipset and its USB controller, which leaves the Windows 7 machines able to recognize the iPhones but unable to sync. Apple breaking Atom chip support in 10.6.2?
Apple may have taken out support for Atom processors in its latest beta seed of Mac OS X 10.6.2, one user says. Those testing it claim Apple has changed support in a way that breaks compatibility with the small Intel chips, including their ability to enter sleep mode through an unofficial extension. Windows 7's latest innovation - broken iPhone sync on Intel P55 chipsets, claims
iPhone users running the latest, greatest Microsoft OS, Windows 7, have encountered an interesting little error on behalf of the iPhone hating-Steve Ballmer led company - PC’s using a new Intel chipsets seem unable to sync with the Apple device.
According to a TechRadar report, PC’s running Intel’s P55 chipset face an error which prevents iPhone sync through iTunes on various WIndows PC’s that use the chips.
Apple Discussions are carrying reports of the problem, which Microsoft and Intel are allegedly looking into.

Navi-Spezialist Navigon stellt für Version 1.3 seines Navigon Navigator for iPhone nun auch Verkehsinformationen per Mobilfunk bereit. Der Bezug der Infos als Paid Content ist als in app purchase realisiert. Der Einführungspreis beträgt bis Ende November knapp 20 Euro (nur für die Verkehrsinfos, die App selbst kostet beispielsweise mit DACH-Kartenmaterial knapp 70 Euro), danach knapp 25 Euro. Die Infos sollen laut Anbieter schneller und aktuellere Verkehrsinfos und Stauwarnungen bieten, als die via Traffic-Message-Channel-Dienst(TMC) bezogenen.

Orange UK has published the prices and tariffs it will offer new iPhone customers when it makes the device available in the UK on November 10.

GSM DROID with multitouch pinch-to-zoom demoed on video hating America
The GSM flavor of Motorola's DROID, or Milestone as it will be known in Europe, has multitouch built-in to the UI. For reasons we can only assume have something to do with an unspoken intellectual property agreement between Google and Apple, the US version of the user interface lacks multi-touch features like pinch-to-zoom even though the underlying 2.0 OS supports multitouch events. IDC: Handymarkt wächst um 5,6 Prozent im dritten Quartal
Der weltweite Handymarkt hat im dritten Quartal gegenüber den Monaten April bis Juni ein Wachstum von 5,6 Prozent erzielt. Einer am Freitag veröffentlichten Studie von IDC zufolge haben die Hersteller zwischen Juli und September 287,1 Millionen Geräte verkauft. Unfinished Windows 7 feature exploited for virtual WiFi hotspots
It wasn't all that long ago that Microsoft was talking up the Virtual WiFi feature developed by Microsoft Research and set for inclusion in Windows 7, but something got lost along the road to release day, and the functionality never officially made it into the OS. As you might expect with anything as big and complicated as an operating system though, some of that code did make it into the final release, and there was apparently enough of it for the folks at Nomadio to exploit into a full fledged feature. That's now become Connectify, a free application from the company that effectively turns any Windows 7 computer into a virtual WiFi hotspot -

DROID headed to Germany as Motorola MILESTONE
O2 Germany has confirmed a GSM version of the DROID for Europe going by the name of the Motorola MILESTONE. The news comes courtesy of a sliver of O2's online store page that left itself exposed to the wiles of Google, complete with the above picture and the new moniker, and follows close on the heels of a leaked business guide which says the MILESTONE will retail for €404.20 to corporate customers, and will be available as of November 9th.

Is this a next generation ThinkPad, or the cruelest Photoshop ThinkPad fans have ever witnessed?
So, before we get ourselves in a tizzy, we'll caveat that there are some seeming signs of Photoshoppery here, namely the edge around the keyboard and of course the pure insanity of putting chiclet keys and a white skin on a ThinkPad (Cloned In China thinks it might be an outright KIRF). iTunes 9.0.2 Breaks Palm Pré Sync
With iTunes 9.0.2, Apple broke the hacked sync tool developed by Palm to allow Palm Pré owners to sync music from iTunes on their handheld. This type of game between Apple and Palm might last forever, depending on how strongly Apple decided to block identification of its devices. The first time, the Pré was recognized as an iPod, then the second time it is identified by iTunes as an iPod Video. In both cases, Palm have been using the USB identified of both devices, an illegal usage according to the USB Alliance. So, will Palm keep releasing hack to maintain sync compatibility between iTunes and its Pré, or will the company consider statement from the USB Alliance, and rather think twice before acting?

TSMC always has difficulties with 40nm engraving
TSMC is certainly the largest foundry of made-to-order chips. Its customers submits a design and asks them to manufacture the corresponding products. This is, for example, the case of the graphic chipmakers who buy wafers of manufactured chips. TSMC has had, since the start of engraving in 40 nm, big problems that are still not fully solved. Currently, only 40% of the production are viable. Thus the 60% remainder of chips engraved in 40 nm are thrown in the trash, which creates large problems with NVidia and AMD. AMD has since announced that it was going to increase by $20 the price of Radeon HD 5850; due to the scarcity of this product, their full production can be sold without problem.
It is possible that Apple is also affected since some speak about a custom chip for their Mac Tablet. Thus, there is a chance that it is also TSMC who produces this chip, and doubtless in 40 nm to minimise the power consumption, a point on which Apple would have been very demanding. Alright, would you look at this, Apple? Entelligence: Of ebooks and suburban moms
There was a raging debate going on last week at Engadget HQ over the role of dedicated ebook readers that spilled over on to the Engadget Show. You can watch the show here, but essentially big boss Joshua Topolsky and Paul Miller feel that the new Barnes and Noble Nook is going to be a hit -- the one machine that gets suburban moms to buy. On the other hand, Nilay Patel, rationally (as he agrees with me) says it's not going to happen and there's no mass market for dedicated ebook readers. I'm going to weigh in and say Nilay is probably right.

Future AMD's Answer to NVIDIA Fermi
On can find on the website AlienBabelTech some photos of the future Radeon HD 5970.
This card features two GPU HD 5870, in other words a source of raw power but also a massive energy drainer (left photo). So far, Apple never supported dual GPU cards on Mac OS X. With Snow Leopard, and Open CL, things might quickly change as one GPU could be used for rendering:display, while the second one could be used for GPGPU tasks.

Windows 7 fails to stop Mac's web growth
The launch of Windows 7 in October did nothing to stop an increase in Mac share online, the latest data from Net Applications shows. Although the Microsoft OS was on sale for nine days last month, Windows' combined share of Internet traffic actually dropped to 92.52 percent while Mac OS X profited directly, reaching a new high of 5.27 percent. Windows 7 did gain share and represents 2.15 percent, but its gain was more than offset by a full percentage point of Windows users abandoning Windows XP, in many cases opting for the Mac or other platforms.
