Olympus E-P2 confirmed prematurely
Olympus' E-P2 Micro Four Thirds camera has been revealed early thanks to a preview posted in advance. The rangefinder-like design is now known by BJP to be getting only a handful of new features but will importantly bring AF motion tracking and consequently fix a common complaint of slow autofocusing with the E-P1. Alongside this, it brings in a new electronic viewfinder option that is both very high-resolution (1.44 megapixels) and which pivots up to 90 degrees off-axis.

TypeStyler upgrades for Mac OS X
Following a seven-year development delay, Strider Software has released a Mac OS X version of TypeStyler. The software generates text using a variety of different shapes and layouts. It newly supports both PowerPC and Intel Macs, along with Mac OS X Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. New Mac OS X 10.6.2 build restores Atom support
Word that Apple had disabled Atom support in a Mac OS X 10.6.2 beta seed may have been premature, an update from the same discoverer says. A newer build, 10C535, now appears to have brought the feature back and hints that the lack of Atom support may have been a bug or an otherwise temporary action. Apple's code doesn't have any immediate clues as to whether or not the move was intentional.

Planon intros DocuPen Xtreme X-Series
Planon on Wednesday introduced its new series of DocuPen Xtreme scanning pens, which includes the X05, X10 and X50. The X05 and X10 can support 600DPI resolutions, while the X50 doubles it to 1,200DPI. Each of the pens has a 200MHz processor and 64MB of memory, both the highest in Planon's lineup.

iFixit introduces 'Answers': A Collaborative Repair Community
iFixit today announced that they are building a community based around repairing, troubleshooting and teardowns of electronics. The idea is to help people fix their technology hardware issues so that people don't have to throw away as much. Bravo.

Olympus E-P2 leaks out again, brings along lofty price tag
We heard way back in August that an E-P2 could be on tap for a late 2009 release, and while it doesn't appear that the actual ship date will happen before next year, we'd be shocked if Olympus didn't come clean with its second Micro Four Thirds camera here soon. Automatic Duck ships ProDate DV, updates Pro Import/Export
Automatic Duck has published a trio of new software releases supporting Apple's Final Cut editing tool. The first is ProDate DV, a plug-in supporting both Final Cut Pro and Express. The software scans DV media for timestamps, allowing date and time information to be imposed on-screen. It costs $39.

HTC DROID Eris unboxed and examined: 'feels much better' than Sprint Hero
If recent leaks are any indication, we should be seeing plenty more HTC DROID Eris unboxings any day now, but right now it looks like the Boy Genius Report has scored one of the first courtesy of one its helpful "connects." NVIDIA: Intel delaying USB 3.0 chips until 2011
Intel may have stalled adoption of the USB 3.0 standard for as long as two years, NVIDIA spokesman Brian Burke says. Following an apparent PC vendor leak which claims Intel won't have any USB 3.0-capable chipsets of its own until 2011, Burke tells TGDaily that NVIDIA has learned the same news. He contends that Intel has held the industry back by creating a near monopoly in demand for its chipsets but refusing to provide significant updates.

Update: OS 10.6.2 now working on Atom processors
Last week, there was a bit of a fuss made over prominent Hackintosher Stell's contention that new 10.6.2 beta builds were killing support for Atom chips. It appears that fears of the loss of Atom's support were unfounded because the latest developer build (10C535) re-enables support for Intel's Netbook processor.
Stell says:
Wow, didn’t expect to get linked all over the internet for this damn post. Anyways, in the latest development build Atom appears to have resurrected itself zombie style in 10C535. The Atom lives another day, but nothing is concrete until the final version of 10.6.2 is out.

DIY 'Giger' robot walks after 100 hours of human work
Alright, so this so-called "Giger" do-it-yourself robot may not truly be Giger-esque, but it did cost upwards of $10,000 and take more than 100 hours to build, which is enough for us to forgive a little mis-naming. The biggest expense (and time sink), it seems, came as a result of the builder's decision to use professional-grade servos instead of the usual DIY fare, which are both finicky and pricey (between $200 and $300 apiece). After a bit of fine-tuning, however, our pal "Tyberius" was able to get the bot to show off a few moves for the camera, and even walk across the desk without toppling over (he's apparently looking to give it a more natural gait next). Microsoft cuts 800 extra jobs
Microsoft today confirmed late rumors and said it has cut 800 additional jobs. The positions are spread across many of the company's divisions and are above and beyond the 5,000 cuts planned at the start of the year. No direct explanation is given other than that the company says it still has to "manage [its] businesses closely" and watch for where it can trim costs.

RemObjects has launched a new development tool for the Mac and iPhone, Data Abstract for OS X. The framework focuses on databases, allowing developers to focus on front-end presentation. It contains an Objective-C library supporting Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6, as well as the iPhone OS. It is said to work well alongside Cocoa and Xcode.

ASUS retools Eee Keyboard, swaps in capacitive touchscreen
At this point, we're beginning to wonder if we'll ever see ASUS' Eee Keyboard on store shelves. Marware, IvySkin intro new iPhone, iPod touch cases
Marware and IvySkin have each announced updated iPhone and iPod touch cases, the SportShell and the SmartCase. The SportShell is now available in a version for the second-generation iPod touch. It uses a three-piece hard shell, made of polycarbonate plastic with a rubberized finish. The case can operate as a flat-back or open-back case, or else clip to a belt where it can rotate 360 degrees.

Navigon Mobile Navigator Europe nun ebenfalls mit Traffic Live verfügbar

Appsfire figures that most Apps aren't very successful
With the App Store now holding over 100,000 apps, one would figure that only a few would enjoy the type of success that the big guys get. Appsfire's agrees and has some actual numbers on what happens along the looooong tail:
Only 5 applications are on half of all iPhones/iPod Touch devices (FaceBook, AIM, Google?)
The 1000th ranked app, which is the top 1%, is installed on "only" 1.76% of iPhones/ iPod touches. If there are 50 million devices out there, that is almost a million installations so that is still significant.
After 20,000, the apps have almost no installations. Meaning 80% of apps never get any sort of popularity.

Klipsch has made a rare update to its veteran ProMedia 2.1 speakers by unveiling the ProMedia 2.1 Wireless. It uses the same core 70W stereo satellites and 130W subwoofer as the original but receives its audio from a 2.4GHz RF-based USB transmitter that works with any computer that supports USB sound. Walmart's $300 HP G60 laptop gets real, detailed
There wasn't exactly much secrecy left around this one after ads started popping up online, but Walmart's now set aside any doubt about its $300 HP G60-519WM laptop with a listing for it on its website, which also thankfully includes the complete specs for it. Apparently built exclusively for Walmart by HP, this particular model packs a 15.6-inch WXGA display, along with previously rumored specs including a 2.2GHz Celeron 900 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, a LightScribe DVD burner, and some basic Intel GMA 4500M integrated graphics -- not to mention Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit edition for an OS. Super Talent launches first USB 3.0 flash drive with RAID
Super Talent on Wednesday revealed its new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 RAIDDrive lineup, which is up to ten times faster than USB 2.0 drives when transferring data. A system with both USB 3.0 ports and a special USB Attached SCSI driver can transfer at up to 320MB per second, or faster than most solid-state drives; it can still run at up to 200MB per second without the optimization. Super Talent claims to be using a special technology that involves multiple RAID pairs of differential serial data lines.

New MS Courier leak details multi-touch interface
A new leak of internal documentation has provided a deeper explanation of the Microsoft Courier. The dual-screen tablet prototype has a fundamentally simple interface with two-finger multi-touch gestures: besides usual navigation, it would let users tap-and-hold to clip a photo or other object and a two-finger swipe left or right to move that object to the opposite page. The pen also has two buttons and an "eraser" to both switch between drawing styles as well as to remove recent changes.

Apple leads tech in October Piqqem sentiment ratings
Apple stock is said to have led the pack in Piqqem's October sentiment ratings, again excelling over Microsoft, which came in last amongst a group of six major technology companies. Apple achieved a score of 3.11, considered high in a scale of 0 to 4. Google was second with 2.88, while Intel ranked third at 2.70. Below the top three were Cisco (2.69), Amazon (2.53) and HP (2.53), followed by Microsoft at 2.27.

New York state sues Intel for antitrust violations
New York state's Attorney General Andrew Cuomo today filed a lawsuit against Intel that accuses the company of antitrust abuse. The Delaware-based complaint maintains that Intel violated both state and federal laws by allegedly threatening companies with retaliation if they used AMD processors and in some cases paying out billions of dollars in financial incentives disguised as rebates. Intel engaged in "bribery and coercion" to keep its control of the market, Cuomo says.

New York attorney general files antitrust lawsuit against Intel
No matter how it tries, Intel just can't shake those pesky antitrust monkeys off its back: the attorney general of New York today filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the chipmaker, saying it unfairly prevented AMD from competing under state and federal law. That's pretty much what the EU just fined Intel $1.45b for in May and exactly what AMD itself is suing Intel for in Delaware, so we're guessing things are a little busy for Chipzilla's lawyers right now -- and things are just going to get worse, as the smart money says this is all just a precursor to the Federal Trade Commission dr

BlackBerry steigert Anteil am Smartphone-Markt im dritten Quartal
Research In Motion (RIM) hat im dritten Quartal 2009 seinen Marktanteil bei Smartphones deutlich gesteigert. Wie die Analysten von Canalys melden, überholte RIM mit seinen BlackBerry-Modellen in den vergangenen drei Monaten Apples iPhone-Serie und kommt mit 8,5 Millionen verkauften Geräten auf einen Marktanteil von 20,6 Prozent. State of virtualization: Parallels 5.0 released, VMWare Fusion performance
Despite being a Mac fan for as long as I can remember I have always been intrigued with the ability to boot multiple operating systems. When Apple came out with the Quadra 630 and PowerMac 6100 models that had optional DOS cards in them, I was awed at the notion of quickly being able to switch over to Windows with a keystroke, and have since tackled many options for running other operating systems on my Macs, including emulation and the now popular virtualization solutions enabled by the current Macs' Intel hardware. There's something just fun about being able to boot and use multiple operating systems on a computer.

ACTA terms may force ISP anti-piracy, 3 strikes rules
A leaked set of proposals for the Anti-Counterfeit Trade Agreement (ACTA) suggests the international deal will require harsh online anti-piracy measures. The draft will reportedly force Internet providers in all member states to actively police copyright on their networks. To qualify for safe harbor and reduce their liability, the ISPs would also have to implement "gradual response" rules like France's three-strike law that initially warn and eventually punish those said pirating content, likely forcing them offline.

Sony launches 1,000 Ringtones DVD for iPhone
Sony's Creative Software division has released 1,000 Ringtones, a collection primarily intended for iPhone owners. The DVD contains both M4R and MP3 files, the former of which can simply be added to iTunes for later device sync. CNET.uk says the iPhone is the "Worst Phone EVAR"
Even though it is the highest rated mobile phone on their own site, they say, as a phone, it is the worst. They cite poor mic and speakers, dropped or unreachable calls a a host of other issues.
It may be the highest-rated mobile phone on CNET UK, rocking the pockets of half of our crack editorial team. It's certainly the touchscreen face that launched a thousand apps. But as an actual call-making phone, it's rubbish, and we aim to prove it.
Strange because we don't have iPhone connectivity issues over here in the US?

AT&T sues Verizon over "There's a Map for That" campaign
AT&T is suing Verizon because it believes the "There's a Map for That" advertising is misleading. AT&T contend that the maps shown confuse the customer into believing there is no coverage at all in the white spots on AT&T's map when in fact there is either EDGE or GPRS service in a lot of those areas.
Maybe those attorney fees would be better spent on adding towers/capacity and working on that map, AT&T?

Following the 9.9.09 debut of the digitally re-mastered catalogue on CD, Apple Corps and EMI Music have announced the worldwide release of a limited edition of only 30,000 Beatles Stereo USB 'apples' on December 7 (December 8 in North America).
The music ships on an apple-shaped USB drive (groan) loaded with the re-mastered audio for The Beatles’ 14 stereo titles, as well as all of the re-mastered CDs’ visual elements, including 13 mini-documentary films about the studio albums, replicated original UK album art, rare photos and expanded liner notes.

Apple gets into music-related movie sales through iTunes
Apple has introduced a new wave of music-related movies on iTunes, gathering these together in the new “Music Movies” page.
The Music Movies landing offers music films such as concerts, documentaries and music-focused feature films. Apple also plans to “negotiate exclusive access to new music-themed movies to make them available for home distribution on iTunes before the physical DVD makes its way to retail shelves or rental stores,” reports Billboard.

How the iMac almost wasn't the iMac
Apple boss, Steve Jobs, took a lot of convincing to embrace the name “iMac” when the company introduced the company-saving computer, but, as history shows us, he came round in the end.
That’s just one of the many nuggets contained in Cult Of Mac’s interesting interview with former TBWA\Chiat\Day creative director, Ken Segall, the man who thought up the iMac name and created the “Think Different” campaign.
He tells the story of how his team was introduced to the Bondi Blue iMac - and it seems the creative team were “horrified” when they first saw the appliance.

iPhone is big down under, survey claims
The smartphone wars continue, with a bevy of touch-type-phones attempting to cast a dent in the Apple iPhone broadside, but in Australia at least, iPhone appears set to become Australia’s strongest mobile phone brand, according to a survey by Millward Brown.
The 2009 BrandZ brand equity survey of 400 Australian mobile phone users shows Apple’s phone is perceived to have more “brand strengths” than Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and BlackBerry.
It also attracted the highest brand “voltage”, by which the researchers measure a brand’s predicted growth. They believe Apple will increase its iPhone marketshare in Australia next year as a result. At present, just 9% of the survey group own the Apple mobile.

35 million netbooks to ship in 2009
Netbooks are still set to top nearly 35 million units by the end of the year, ABI said today. The prediction is similar to that from the start of the year and asserts that the mini portables will form a significant portion of the entire PC business. iMac 27″: Grafikprobleme bei einigen Geräten
Wie wir von einigen Lesern erfahren haben, kann es bei dem neuesten durch Apple vorgestellten iMac in der nun erhältlichen Größe 27″ zu Grafikproblemen bei einigen Anwendungen kommen.
So sind uns von vertikal auftretenden Streifen berichtet worden, die z.B. bei einigen Bildschirmschonern oder auch bei der Benutzung von Photoshop Elements zum Vorschein treten.
Derzeit gibt es seitens Apple noch keine passende Lösung zu den aufgetretenen Problemen, allerdings hoffen wir auf Besserung mit dem (schon länger erwarteten) nächsten Update.

That's right the HD2 has landed. Actually, we took the phone over to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon the other day, but didn't get a chance to show it off, so here we are. Sure, you've seen this guy in action in earlier videos but it's still nice to get a look at this monster up close. We're still blown away by the fact that this is a Windows Mobile 6.5 device -- the skinning job that HTC has done here is nothing short of a miracle. Trekstor findet strategischen Investor
Der insolvente Speichermedien- und Unterhaltungselektronikhersteller Trekstor hat in Telefield einen Käufer gefunden. Der Elektronikkonzern aus Hongkong habe ein überzeugendes Konzept für die Zukunft von Trekstor vorgelegt und biete die Gewähr für eine nahtlose Fortführung des Geschäftsbetriebs, teilte der vom Amtsgericht Darmstadt bestellte Insolvenzverwalter Jan Markus Plathner heute mit. Intel kann Marktanteil im dritten Quartal ausbauen
Intel hat im dritten Quartal seinen Marktanteil auf dem CPU-Markt ausgebaut. Das geht aus einer Untersuchung von Mercury Research hervor. Der Marktanteil des Chipherstellers stieg von 81,2 Prozent im Vorjahr auf 81,5 Prozent. Gegenüber dem zweiten Quartal legte Intel um 1 Prozent zu.

iPhone is big down under, survey claims
The smartphone wars continue, with a bevy of touch-type-phones attempting to cast a dent in the Apple iPhone broadside, but in Australia at least, iPhone appears set to become Australia’s strongest mobile phone brand, according to a survey by Millward Brown.
The 2009 BrandZ brand equity survey of 400 Australian mobile phone users shows Apple’s phone is perceived to have more “brand strengths” than Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and BlackBerry.
It also attracted the highest brand “voltage”, by which the researchers measure a brand’s predicted growth. They believe Apple will increase its iPhone marketshare in Australia next year as a result. At present, just 9% of the survey group own the Apple mobile.

How the iMac almost wasn't the iMac
Apple boss, Steve Jobs, took a lot of convincing to embrace the name “iMac” when the company introduced the company-saving computer, but, as history shows us, he came round in the end.
That’s just one of the many nuggets contained in Cult Of Mac’s interesting interview with former TBWA\Chiat\Day creative director, Ken Segall, the man who thought up the iMac name and created the “Think Different” campaign.
He tells the story of how his team was introduced to the Bondi Blue iMac - and it seems the creative team were “horrified” when they first saw the appliance.

Jailbreak-iPhone “gekapert”
In den Niederlanden ist ein per Jailbreak gehacktes iPhone gekapert worden. Der iPhone-Nutzer sollte 5 Euro zahlen, um wieder Zugriff zu erhalten. Der Angriff auf das iPhone war nur möglich, weil es zuvor mittels Jailbreak gehackt worden war. Dadurch wird unter anderem ein SSH-Server aktiviert, so dass das iPhone über ein Standard-Root-Kennwort für jedermann erreichbar ist. Wenn dieses Kennwort nicht angepasst wird, ist es für einen Angreifer ein Leichtes, vollen Zugriff auf ein gehacktes iPhone zu erhalten. Dieser Angriff ist auf einem iPhone ohne Jailbreak nicht möglich.
Der Angriff wurde bekannt, weil ein Opfer aus den Niederlanden darüber in einem Forum berichtet hatte. Der Angreifer hatte einen Warnhinweis beim Einschalten des iPhones aktiviert. AMD: Sechs Kerne und neue Chipsätze im Mai?

Jibbigo: Simultanübersetzung per App
Hört sich wie Zukunftsmusik an, kann aber heute schon für knapp 20 Euro im App Store erworben werden: Vom Übersetzungsprojekt Jibbigo gibt es jetzt auch eine iPhone App, die gesprochene Worte annähernd simultan übersetzen kann. Das ist noch nicht ganz der Babelfisch aus "The Hitchhiker's Guide..", zumal bislang nur Englisch und Spanisch unterstützt werden, kommt Science Fiction aber schon erfreulich nahe: Mehrere Sätze werden in das Mikrofon des iPhone gesprochen, woraufhin die App über den Lautsprecher die Übersetzung ausgibt.
Rund 40.000 Vokabeln werden mit der knapp 160 MB fetten App mitgeliefert. Weitere bidirektionale Sprachversionen sind in Vorbereitung. Da fehlt ja eigentlich nur noch die Simultanübersetzung für Telefonate

Niederländischer Hacker kapert entsperrte iPhones
Ein Hacker aus den Niederlanden hat sich Einträgen im Forum Tweakers.net zufolge Zugang zu per Jailbreak entsperrten iPhones verschafft und eine nicht ausblendbare Textnachricht an deren Besitzer verschickt. Darin fordert er sie zum Besuch einer Website auf, die angeblich Informationen enthält, wie sie ihr Smartphone absichern können. Laut Ars Technica sollen Betroffene 5 Euro auf ein PayPal-Konto überweisen, um zu erfahren, wie sich die Meldung wieder entfernen lässt.

Intel baut den Marktanteil geringfügig weiter aus
Im abgelaufenen Quartal konnte Intel den Marktanteil im Prozessormarkt weiter ausbauen. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr stieg der Anteil von 81,2 Prozent auf 81,5 Prozent. Intel hat sich somit wieder bei über 80 Prozent stabilisiert, nachdem AMD kurzzeitig in geringem Maße aufholen konnte und Intel auf 79 Prozent drückte. Apple gets into music-related movie sales through iTunes
Apple has introduced a new wave of music-related movies on iTunes, gathering these together in the new “Music Movies” page.
The Music Movies landing offers music films such as concerts, documentaries and music-focused feature films.
Apple also plans to “negotiate exclusive access to new music-themed movies to make them available for home distribution on iTunes before the physical DVD makes its way to retail shelves or rental stores,” reports Billboard.

Nun bieten auch die Kölner Spezialisten für Hotelreservierungen HRS ihre Zimmersuche als iPhone App. Laut Anbieter erhalten die Nutzer der kostenlosen App "HRS Hotel Organizer" direkten Zugriff auf ca. 250.000 via HRS buchbare Hotels weltweit. Die App kann in Deutsch, Chinesisch (!), Englisch, Französisch, Italienisch, Spanisch, Polnisch und Türkisch bedient werden.
Doch auch die Konkurrenz schläft nicht: Bereits seit Juli d.J. kann die "kinkaa Hotelsuche" im App Store geladen werden. Das Alleinstellungsmerkmal dieser deutsch oder englisch bedienbaren Gratis-App ist der unabhängige, sortierbare Preisvergleich für Hotels. Following the 9.9.09 debut of the digitally re-mastered catalogue on CD, Apple Corps and EMI Music have announced the worldwide release of a limited edition of only 30,000 Beatles Stereo USB 'apples' on December 7 (December 8 in North America).
The music ships on an apple-shaped USB drive (groan) loaded with the re-mastered audio for The Beatles’ 14 stereo titles, as well as all of the re-mastered CDs’ visual elements, including 13 mini-documentary films about the studio albums, replicated original UK album art, rare photos and expanded liner notes.

United Internet hebt nach Gewinnsteigerung Jahresprognose erneut an
United Internet hat seine Geschäftszahlen nach IFRS für das dritte Quartal 2009 vorgelegt. Demnach stieg das Ergebnis vor Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibungen (EBITDA) gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 21,5 Prozent von 78,5 auf 95,4 Millionen Euro. Das Ergebnis vor Zinsen und Steuern (EBIT) kletterte um 26 Prozent von 65,1 auf 82 Millionen Euro. Dreiradroller für Städte, der ausschliesslich durch Druckluft angetrieben wird und innerhalb von drei Minuten vollgetankt werden kann, wodurch nur für etwa 1,50 Euro Strom verbraucht wird. Damit soll er dann bei 45 km/h Spitzengeschwindigkeit etwa 220 Kilometer weit im Stadtverkehr fahren können. Studie: Touchscreen-Handys im US-Markt
Die Mobil-Spezialisten von comScore haben die Marktdurchdringung von Touchscreens bei Mobiltelefonen im US-Markt betrachtet und haben für den Zeitraum von August 2008 bis August 2009 einen Zuwachs von 159 Prozent festgestellt. 23,8 Millionen US-Amerikaner nutzen demnach derzeit Touchscreen-Handys. Die Nutzung von Smartphones (also mit Tastatur und/oder Touchscreen) wuchs im gleichen Zeitraum um 63 Prozent. comScore hat folgende Top 10 der Touchscreen-Telefone ermittelt: iPhone (32,9%), LG Dare (8,7%), LG Voyager (7,8%), BlackBerry Storm (7,0%), Palm Treo (6,5 percent), Samsung Instinct (5,0%), T-Mobile G1 (3,6%), HTC Touch (3,3%), Samsung Glyde (2,7%) und LG Xenon (2.6%). iPhones mit Jailbreak via Mobilfunknetz gehackt

Über einen schon länger bekannten Exploit gejailbreakter iPhones hat ein 17jähriger Niederländer am Wochenende eine Reihe von iPhones gehackt, indem er ihnen unter anderem geänderte Hintergrundbilder wie dieses hier auf die iPhones schickte. Installiert man nach einem Jailbreak den SSH-Server, kann jeder von außen als Root auf das iPhone zugreifen, denn alle Benutzer-Accounts des iPhones haben das gleiche Passwort. Mit dem Trick versuchte er zunächst allen Betroffenen 5 Euro per Paypal abzuknöpfen, um ihre iPhones zu sichern und den Hack zu "entfernen". Adobe publicly accuse Apple of restricting access to Flash technology on the iPhone
Since the beginning of the existence of the iPhone, one of the recurring complaints has been that Flash is not supported. This is an enormous problem for the detractors of the telephone and some of its owners. But Apple seems inflexible on this point, Flash allows the execution of code not under their control. Until now, Adobe criticized often this state of affairs, but kept it soft suitable for a future reconciliation. It seems that this is over as this screen capture shows.

Leaked Walmart ad reveals Xbox 360 Arcade with $100 gift card, $300 HP G60 laptop?

The idea is that the company is preparing to launch at a at the beginning of 2010 subscription service for television contents, certainly via the Apple TV.The company apparently is still in full negotiation with the various distribution channels so as to be able to offer a full contents. One can more than certainly already to count on the full Disney catalogue to be acquired by at Apple, but it will be necessary to offer much more to convince potential customers. Hybrid SLI: Look Back to the Future
Couple of months ago, NVIDIA released an innovative technology, known as Hybrid SLI, letting users to use simultaneously a dedicated GPU and an integrated chipset. Depending on tasks and 3D rendering, the system would then use only the graphical chipset, or both graphical processing unit. It would be possible to use such system in the current MacBook Pro, however, Apple never implemented it to be able to offer such management "on the fly".NVIDIA might be on track to release a new version of the Hybrid SLI, offering a better implementation and support for future Intel Arrendale CPU. As a reminder, the Core i5 and i7 available in the new iMac models feature 2 cores and an integrated graphical chipset. Samsung develops ultra-thin 32GB flash memory
Samsung tonight unveiled a breakthrough for its NAND flash memory that could lead to much more storage in handhelds. The new approach manages to fit 32 gigabytes of memory into a single chip that measures just 0.6mm (0.02in) thick through the use of extra-thin, "bare" packages that are half as thick as before but are just as sturdy. Combined with a 30 nanometer assembly process, the chips are both 40 percent thinner and lighter and should lead to thinner smartphones and media players.

Bracketeer 4 adds Snow Leopard support, new user interface
Pangea Software has released Bracketeer 4, the latest version of its photography utility that combines bracketed exposures into a single image, resulting in a wide range of shading in each photograph. Toon Boom Animation has launched a new animation title, Flip Boom All-Star, aimed at teens and older users. The software can import digital images and provides drag-and-drop drawings that are ready to be added to animations. It supports text entry and handles MP3 audio files. The utility transfers Apple's Final Cut Pro program sequences to After Effects, preserving all aspects of Final Cut projects such as effects, audio, media clips, transitions, geometric transformations, and multi-clip edits. Dutch hacker seeks out jailbroken iPhones for fame and fortune
Jailbreaking an iPhone certainly brings many benefits, but it's also frought with some peril, as amply demonstrated by a Dutch hacker who decided to go snooping around for vulnerable jailbroken iPhones in the Netherlands. While he apparently didn't actually swipe personal information or cause any damage, he was able to find some jailbroken iPhones with SSH running, which allowed him to display a message saying "Your iPhone's been hacked because it's really insecure! T-Mobile users tonight have been reporting a widespread outage of service across the US. Those affected are finding themselves unable to call or use data services like 3G or messaging. The exact cause of the outage isn't currently known.

We're getting reports from sea to shining sea this evening that T-Mobile service is down or intermittent on both voice and data -- particularly bad timing in light of the recent Sidekick drama. We've tested in New York and it's definitely down for us -- both voice and data -- so how's service treating everyone out there?

Update: We just got an official statement from T-Mobile, and it's confirmed -- service is down. Here's the statement:

Install a SSD in an iMac 24"

The SSD model being a 2.5" instead of the designed 3.5" support, he used an adaptor, but everything is working fine and the reactivity of the computer is dramatically increased.We think it would be smarter to exchange the SuperDrive with a SSD, similarly to the procedure we used for the MacBook Pro. relatively cheap and handy adaptor
the large storage capacity of the original HD is preserved
even with a Firewire 800 port, an external HD is always slower than an internal SATA HD
however, an external HD will be faster than the one installed originally in the iMac.
Of course, this is only true if you iMac features a SATA SuperDrive, you can find it in the System information, and it should be true for all GeF

It Has Never Been so Easy to Flash an ATI PC Card with Mac OS X
With Apple releasing an RAdeon update for its iMac models, it offered tools to be used for other purpose. Such tools have been improved an a dedicated utility has been developed: ATI Flashing tool.
In the ideal world, one can plug a PC RAdeon 4870 or 4890, next to the original graphic car, then turn it into a Mac Edition version. One can also use the software to install the application able to inject components required to recognize a non-flashed Radeon HD 4890, then reboot with this single card, flash it, then remove the injector and perform an ultimate reboot with a fully functional graphic carD. OWC offers external Blu-ray burner with USB, eSATA, FW ports
Other World Computing on Tuesday announced that it is now offering a Mercury Pro external Blu-ray drive with a quad interface. Users can choose between USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, or eSATA connection methods. The company claims the Pioneer BDR-205 can reach burn speeds of up to 12X on Blu-ray discs, 16X with DVDs, 4X on DVD-DL media, and 40X for CDs.

Droid tethering likely to cost less than iPhone's
Verizon today noted that it plans to add a data tethering option for the Motorola Droid. A representative tells Gearlog that, regardless of the open nature of Android, the new smartphone will eventually support the same $15 Broadband Connect add-on plan as other devices and can share its 3G connection with others. The support should go live in early 2010 and will carry the same 5GB transfer cap as Verizon's regular tethering and 3G modem plans.

Best Buy to let users stream purchased DVD movies
Best Buy today struck a deal with Roxio to create a unique online and DVD hybrid movie service for the big-box retailer. The unnamed project hopes to give users buy once, play anywhere privileges: those who buy a DVD in-store will then have access to a CinemaNow-based portal for watching movies both on computers as well as on smartphones and Internet-aware Blu-ray players. Many of the movies will be new releases instead of reprints or old titles.
