Microsoft ditches Family Guy special... for being Family Guy
Face? Meet palm. Microsoft's decided to pull out of its co-sponsoring of "Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show" after execs attending the taping came to the sudden conclusion that Family Guy-caliber jokes were to be told, tackling such topics as "deaf people, the Holocaust, feminine hygiene and incest." We're not sure how 10 years and over 120 episodes of offensive precedence bypassed Redmond's radars, but man, that's gotta be some strong personal bubble. The show will still air November 8th, pre-recorded Microsoft references in tow, but with a new as-of-yet named sponsor. All we have of the now-doomed partnership is this brief video from the Windows "741" student site -- it's after the break.

Telestream ScreenFlow 2.0 adds new editing capabilities
Telestream has released an update to its ScreenFlow screencasting software for Mac. Version 2 allows users to upload content directly to YouTube, with support for both SD and HD resolutions. The company has also added a variety of new 2D and 3D transitions, along with expanded control over editing, video speed, audio levels, keyboard shortcuts and document packages.

FCC head warns of "spectrum gap" made by iPhone
FCC chairman Julius Genachowski in a talk published today warned that mobile data is facing a "spectrum gap" that could significantly damage Internet access on cellphones. He considers the iPhone a leader in a wave of devices that are straining 3G networks enough to create severe accessibility problems and that the FCC is considering "more creative" steps to solve the problem. Among these steps may include exploiting unlicensed spectrum or even allowing second licenses that have two companies share the same frequency.

Stanford builds robotic Audi for racing, robotic Volkswagen for parking
You can make a robotic car, and you can make a robotic car -- and it looks like Stanford is leading the charge on the no compromises approach with its new driverless Audi TTS. That, of course, is only the latest in a long line of robotic cars from the folks at Stanford, and it looks like it's also by far their most ambitious, as it's going above and beyond the usual DARPA challenges in the hope of breaking a few records and winning a few races. Tilera 100-core CPU said 4X faster than new Xeons
Tilera on Monday unveiled a new processor it hopes will unseat Intel from its overall lead in performance. The TILE-Gx100 counts on a massively parallel, 100-core architecture to handle many tasks at once and reportedly overcomes some of the problems of scaling inherent to many-core designs. Instead of using a data bus, the grid is treated as a mesh network with switches on each core to route data smoothly. The approach lets Tilera reach the core count without it stalling or without the added space dictated by the bus architecture.

China Unicom to offer amnesty for gray-market iPhones
Some users of gray-market iPhones will soon be eligible for an amnesty in China, writes the China Business Times. Official products for the region are set to go on sale later this week, after an unusually long negotiation period with Apple. Prices will be considerably higher than many Chinese are able to afford however, which could lead a number to choose unlocked import phones, which are also frequently less expensive.

Sense UI update for HTC Magic makes the scene in Taiwan
If our ability to guesstimate Chinese website contents based on sketchy machine translation software is correct, it looks like HTC Magic owners in Taiwan are finally getting that Sense UI update they've been teased with since mid-August. Regen intros ReNu solar charger for iPods, iPhones
Regen recently introduced its ReNu modular solar panel. The device will charge its built-in battery using the sun and in turn power a number of optional bases. ReNu's panel plugs into a speaker dock for docking iPods and iPhones, or iPod charging base and an LED desk lamp add-on. Intel 34nm SSD gets potential 40% write speed boost
Intel today posted a crucial firmware update for its current-generation 34 nanometer solid-state drives that promises a major lift to their performance. The X25-M series now supports the Trim, or ATA Data Set Management Command, to more efficiently write to the drive. By better recognizing and shuffling which data blocks aren't used, Trim avoids unnecessarily rewriting to the disk and speeds up its overall transfer speed.

We won't say that we love products leaving the oven before they're completely done, but we do adore gratis firmware updates that better a product even after you've purchased it. HTC Hero having intermittent text messaging problems?
There's not exactly much in the way of official statements on the matter just yet, but it looks like support forums have been piling up with reports of text messaging problems on the HTC Hero over the past few weeks, and with no signs of a fix in sight. Apparently, the phone can send texts just fine, but runs into a little trouble when it comes to receiving 'em, with most folks reporting only intermittent problems, and at least some not receiving any at all. Interestingly, the problem seems to be occurring in both the US and the UK, so it would seem to be a problem on the phone's end and not the carrier's, and a few people seem to have had some (brief) success after resetting the device. iChat dropping sound, chopping video, or crashing?
As with much of Apple's software, iChat is easy to use despite running a variety of complex technologies (video, audio, themes, screen sharing, etc.). On occasion, these may not run as smoothly as one would expect. With a high-speed internet connection for instance, you should be able to run smooth video, and yet some people are experiencing choppiness or dropped audio during video conferencing. Additionally, the program may crash when running video in 64-bit mode.

Apple to spend $4 million on Chicago subway station
Apple has agreed to spend over $4 million on renovating a Chicago subway station, according to Chicago Business. The station is situated near the intersection of North and Clybourn, where Apple is set to build another retail store for the city, measuring some 15,000 square feet with design by long-time partner Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. The lease on the real estate is expected to cost Apple at least $700,000 annually.

Verizon talks profit fall, hopes for iPhone
Verizon today reported mixed results for its summer quarter and reiterated its invitation to Apple. The carrier said its operating revenue grew year-over-year by more than 10 percent to $27.3 billion but that its actual earnings per shared dropped a sharp 30.5 percent from 59 cents per share a year ago to 41 cents today, or $2.88 billion. Most of the growth came about from added cellphone and FiOS customers.

‘Apple’s just greedy, Google is evil’, says Symbian boss
Symbian CEO, Lee Williams, speaks with GigaOm’s Om Malik - and had some interesting observations on Google and Apple.
Recent analysis forecasts that by 2012 Google Android will be the second most popular smartphone OS, behind Symbian, the operating system that powers most of Nokia’s high-end phones.
According to Gartner, Android’s share will be at 18 percent of all smartphones sold globally in 2012, or about 94 million users out of 525 million. Apple seems set to be third, or fourth in the list, slightly behind or slightly in front of Research In Motion, those figures claim.

Here’s the latest new device to appear in China’s fast-moving clone market, the P88 from Shenzhen Great Long Brother Industrial Co. Any similarity to any notion of the future Apple tablet is purely coincidental - after all, that product hasn’t even been announced, though it remains widely speculated upon.

Apple to get its own Chicago subway stop?
This seems like a good idea. Apple's opening a Retail Store next year in Chicago near a run-down subway station at North and Clybourn. Apple would like to spruce up the place in exchange for 4 million dollars in advertising money (which if Chicago is anything like NYC, is gonna happen anyway).

Apple extends health benefits to part-time staff
Apple has side-stepped existing debate concerning whether all Americans should be given a chance at affordable health insurance - by extending full-benefit medical insurance to part-time employees starting from January 2010.
This may not seem a huge deal to UK readers, but in the US health insurance is essential, while the kind of salary part-time and unemployed citizens attracts means access to the insurance and non-welfare health care is denied to these groups.

iPhone on Verizon deal - 'up to Apple', carrier states
Verizon may be playing hardball with the advertising for the new Droid device, but that’s just business - not so deep down the company would still like to offer the iPhone, Verizon Communications CEO, Ivan Seidenberg, confirmed today.

Nokia lawsuit could cost Apple up to $1 billion
A Nokia patent lawsuit could cost Apple as much as $1 billion in back payments, argues Strategy Analytics' Neil Mawston. The analyst tells Reuters that because of the over 34 million iPhones Apple has shipped to date, the company could owe anywhere between $200 million and $1 billion, depending on the terms of a settlement. Novatel's MiFi 2200 has recently benefitted from a firmware update that has upgraded much of its functions. The device connects to either Sprint's or Verizon's EVDO Revision A Internet connection and shares with up to five compatible devices across an 802.11g Wi-Fi network. Most notably, the new software allows the modem to never enter hibernation mode when it is plugged into a wall outlet instead of running off its built-in battery, and is now compatible with the Nintendo DS and BlackBerry Curve.

iPhone on Verizon deal - 'up to Apple', carrier states
Verizon may be playing hardball with the advertising for the new Droid device, but that’s just business - not so deep down the company would still like to offer the iPhone, Verizon Communications CEO, Ivan Seidenberg, confirmed today.

Apple's often-rumored tablet may need to come in well below the rumored $800 price if it hopes to attract Windows users, a study shows today. High-end iMac to have faster front-side bus?
We're looking at Apple's documentation to see if the new Core i5 iMacs have a faster frontside bus than current iMacs. Apple's tech specs page is as ambiguous as possible just putting a placeholder where the speed should be under the Core i5 and not even listing any specs for the Core i7 model. Some Core i5 and i7 chips have 1333MHz bus speeds which would speed up the whole system significantly.
The speed bump would also increase the speed of the RAM however, which isn't indicated by the table.

Apple bald mit eigener U-Bahn-Station
Nächstes Jahr steht die Eröffnung eines neuen Apple Stores in Chicago an, die nahegelegene U-Bahn-Station ist allerdings etwas runter gekommen. Aufgrund dessen hat sich Apple nun mit der Betreibergesellschaft dahingehend geeinigt, dass man die Station mit satten 4 Millionen Dollar auf Vordermann bringt. Im Gegenzug sichert sich Apple das Recht, sämtliche vorhandenen oder entstehenden Werbeflächen exklusiv zu nutzen - so weit, dass die Station auch nach Apples Vorgaben benannt wird, soll es laut einer Sprecherin der Verkehrsgesellschaft allerdings nicht kommen. ZFS dropped from Snow Leopard over licensing?
Support for ZFS was ultimately dropped from Snow Leopard as a result of licensing issues, claims Jeff Bonwick, a project team leader at Sun. The technology was initially expected to be a highlight of Snow Leopard, for instance providing image-based backups, and eliminating the need for drive partitions. Hints that ZFS had been removed came in June however, and the technology is nowhere to be found in shipping copies of the OS.

EU will grenzübergreifenden Onlinehandel vereinfachen
Die Europäische Kommission hat angekündigt, den Online-Binnenhandel in Europa zu vereinfachen. Als Grund für diese Entscheidung nennt EU-Verbraucherschutzkommissarin Meglena Kuneva eine Studie der EU-Kommission, die zeigt, dass 60 Prozent der geplanten grenzüberschreitenden Web-Einkäufe nicht zustande kommen. Palm Pixi to reach Sprint for $100 on Nov. 15
Sprint today set final launch details for the Palm Pixi on its network. The smartphone will ship to the carrier's stores on November 15th and cost $100 on contract after both a $50 immediate discount and a $100 mail-in rebate. Apple is set to open a second Scottish Apple Store on October 29th, in the northern city of Aberdeen. As with a recent Welsh store opening, the Aberdeen launch is unusual in that it is occurring mid-week, and at a time other than 10AM. Novatel MiFi 2200 gets new firmware, now stays on even when you don't need it
If you're using one of the various MiFi incarnations, you may have been slightly annoyed at the thing shutting itself down after a few minutes of inactivity. It's a lovely feature to save juice when running disconnected -- a little less desirable when running on AC. There's a new firmware in town and it does away with such bad behavior whilst also adding better compatibility with the Nintendo DS and BlackBerry Curve. It's not an automatic update, though, so you'll need to dig through some menus to make the magic happen, but we're sure you can figure it out. (If you get stuck, the read link has pictures.)

Orange to Offer the iPhone in UK from Novemrber 10th
According to the newspaper Times, O2 should lose its exclusive partnership for the iPhone in UK on November 10th. Orange, which recently merged its UK mobile network with T-Mobile, will then offer the iPhone too on the same date. Overall, Apple is working on ending its exclusive partnership as already announced during the investigation conducted in France by the anti-monopoly Council. If such exclusive partnership could be useful when launching a new product and new associated services (unlimited internet and Visual Voice Mail), the environment has evolved and such strategy is not necessary anymore. In other words, all carriers are willing to team up with Apple to get the iPhone in their catalog.
This information comes as another sign that the US partnership between Apple and AT&T could also be ending soon. Rumors indicate that AT&T is preparing to accommodat

Telus to launch HSPA, iPhone 3GS Nov. 5
Telus on Monday revealed that both its HSPA+ network and its iPhone launch will kick off on November 5th and has provided device pricing for its version of the Apple handset. Its pricing will match the Rogers version and see 16GB and 32GB iPhone 3GS units cost $200 and $300 respectively on three-year contracts. Contract-free versions will sell for $700 and $800. NYT remarks, SIM tray leak point to Apple tablet?
Apple's plans to launch a tablet in coming months may have gained credence today through a pair of possible leaks. New York Times executive editor Bill Keller in a speech at Harvard's Nieman Journalism Lab last week included the "impending Apple slate" as one of the platforms he hopes to have carry the newspaper's content, alongside desktop, mobile web and iPhone apps. It's unclear if Keller has advance knowledge or is just acting on rumors, although it's been claimed that Apple is negotiating with publishers for content delivery through iTunes in advance of a table

New Jersey's own David Smith is enjoying his 15 minutes right about now, as the world is finally talking about his model train set. You see, this model train set isn't just any model train set. No -- it's probably the world's smallest, most ridiculous and most awesome all at once (all at once). The so-called James River Branch community has been in the works for months on end, and the $11 working locomotive is 35,200 times smaller than a real one. Verizon ships Storm2 Oct. 28, OS 5.0 today
After waiting nearly two weeks past the original launch, Verizon today unveiled its own version of the BlackBerry Storm2. Its version adds CDMA and EVDO Revision A for its own phone and 3G networks; quad-band GSM/EDGE and single-band 2,100MHz HSPA 3G give it roaming in most other areas. The US carrier also includes a 16GB microSDHC card in the box to put it more on par with the 16GB iPhone 3GS.

New record: Over 100,000 apps win App Store approval
ALERT: Ignore previous records; ignore previous records - the iPhone this weekend achieved the new record of approving over 100,000 apps for sale through the App Store.
That’s another 15,000 applications since Apple last confirmed how many software titles it is making available through the store, and confirms the velocity with which developers are throwing titles at the company’s next-gen mobile devices.
As reported by AppShopper, there were 101,561 approved apps, though availability of these varies by territory and just 92,870 of them are currently available through the App Store.

We're still not entirely convinced that there are enough netbook-needing Nokia fanbois out there to make the Booklet 3G a retail success, but word on the internets is that the folks in Espoo are seeing "strong market demand," which, if true, must be a little surprising even to them. Lee Williams of Symbian starts off with a few attack volleys relating to Google's "fragmentation" of UI elements, and the resultant closed APIs being a nightmare to code for. With so many divergent UI elements and styles, he argues, developers would suffer, and the consequence would be a less vibrant app ecosystem. His major gripe with Google's mobile OS, though, has to do with the pervasive "cookie-ing" of customers, which raises the specter of privacy concerns. The Applesana.es site found in latest beta of Mac OS X 10.6.2 some references to two new models of MacBook Pro.
It refers to models labelled 6.1 and 6.2 whereas those currently marketed are the 5.x. ‘Apple’s just greedy, Google is evil’, says Symbian boss
Symbian CEO, Lee Williams, speaks with GigaOm’s Om Malik - and had some interesting observations on Google and Apple.
Recent analysis forecasts that by 2012 Google Android will be the second most popular smartphone OS, behind Symbian, the operating system that powers most of Nokia’s high-end phones.
According to Gartner, Android’s share will be at 18 percent of all smartphones sold globally in 2012, or about 94 million users out of 525 million. Apple seems set to be third, or fourth in the list, slightly behind or slightly in front of Research In Motion, those figures claim.

Sixty-four, sixty-shmore that's so 2007 in terms of processing cores found in a single CPU: one hundred cores is where the future of computing resides. This magnificent engineering feat isn't from AMD or even Intel, it's the latest Tile-GX series of chips from the two-year old San Jose startup, Tilera. Does Apple Definitely Dropped ZFS?
Mac OS Forge, the website where Apple release Open Source parts of Mac OS X, such as Darwin or Grand Central, announced rather unexpectedly and with no further details that:
The ZFS project has been discontinued. The mailing list and repository will also be removed shortly
Rather short and definitive for a project suspected during months to be the future Mac OS X file format.

Fully-functional iPhone 3GS costume is expensive, bulky, and better than your Halloween idea
What could possibly convince you that strapping a 42-inch LCD TV to your body is a great idea? We don't know, but somewhere between concept and the $2,000 total expenditures -- with "no regrets," mind you -- Reko Rivera and John Savio, with the help of John Matthews, outfitted themselves with the displays used to project images from their iPhone 3GS. Unfortunately, the large screens themselves aren't touch screens, but we probably can't be that picky. Their reward? First prizes at costume parties and minor internet celebrity, which we're happy to oblige. Video after the break.

Radeon HD 4670 in New iMac Is Underclocked
Us usual, Apple reduced the clock speed of the Radeon HD 4670 used in the new iMac. This fact was identified by Netkas when he was looking into the bios. The default frequency from the reference card from AMD is 750 MHz for the GPU and 800 MHz for the GDDR3. Apple modified the frequency to obtain 680 MHz for the GPU and 790 MHz for the GDDR3. If the difference is not huge for the VRAM, the drop in clock speed is more than 10% for the GPU, the Radeon HD 4670 is then offering performance levels between a true 4670 and it sister the 4650 with its 600 MHz GPU. Last but not least, the las beta version of Mac OS X 10.6.2 offers drivers for the Radeon HD 46x0, 45x0 et 43x0, so one can expect to find such GPU in future MacBook Pro that could be released ahead of expectations.
