US Air Force says decision-making attack drones will be here by 2047

iPhone 3GS: 3 Volt Sim Karten - Akku schnell leer, Gerät heiss
Wir konnten das folgende Phänomen bei einigen iPhone 3GS feststellen (noch nicht bei iPhone 3G):
Benutzt man ein iPhone 3GS und eine 3 Volt Simkarte, so wird das Gerät warm und der Akku ist mitunter in 4-5 Stunden leer. Dabei ist das Gerät nicht in Gebrauch, sondern liegt einfach nur “rum” und ist im Standby.
Auf Nachfrage von Apple heisst es einfach: Bitte tauschen Sie die SIM Karte gegen eine neue aus.
Derzeit ist allerdings ungeklärt in wieweit dies zu einer Besserung führt, da mitunter je nach Provider 1,8 Volt und 3 Volt SIM Karten ausgegeben werden. Das Problem tritt im Moment scheinbar nur mit 3 Volt SIM Karten a

Sony's EyePet beta hands-on: it's probably the most adorable thing ever
We just got a brief glimpse at the new PlayStation Eye-based augmented reality EyePet game from Sony, which is on track for a holiday release on the PS3. It's no Project Natal, but what the game lacks in gesture-based interaction (though we were able to pet and play with the little guy pretty intuitively) it makes up for in extensive adorability. You can naturally play, feed, groom and customize your pet -- even teach the thing to draw shapes and bring them to life in a sense -- but it's surprisingly fun to just watch the little dude scamper around in seemingly real space. Barcode Producer 5.5 supports grayscale exports
Apparent has released v5.5 of its flagship application, Barcode Producer, and a plug-in for the title, DataBar. The main program is used to generate a variety of barcode types, while the plug-in adds seven formats, including Omnidirectional, Truncated, Stacked, Limited and Expanded. AT&T Killed Google Voice on the iPhone. Are Skype and Fring next?
DF spoke with someone (at Apple most likely) who mentioned that Apple killed Google Voice on the direct orders of AT&T. Fantastic. Killing innovation and competition has now become the first order of business for these characters. OS X Process Management: Guide to Activity Monitor
With UNIX having many tasks running simultaneously, through the years developers have incorporated several command-line tools that allow for live process management. These include "top", "kill", "ps", "df", and "vm_stats", and are available in the BSD subsystem in OS X via the command line. Since these tools require knowledge of the Terminal (which I admit is one of the funnest aspect of OS X), Apple has compiled the function of these and similar tools into "Activity Monitor" to make process management more user-friendly.

Citi Mobile (free) allows Citibank customers to manage their bank accounts while on the go. After logging into an account the user can view all of their accounts, pay bills, transfer funds, find Citi locations, and contact customer service. Premium App Store for is Apple's Tablet?
Remember that "Premium App Store" Rumor we had from two different sources in May? It never hasn't yet materialized but we were thinking that a higher resolution iPod Touch tablet-y thing would need its own games and wares. Apple hat einen weiteren Entwicklerbuild von Mac OS X 10.5.8 veröffentlicht. Die aktuelle Entwicklerversion trägt die Buildnummer 9L30 und weist keine bekannten Fehler mehr auf, die vor der Veröffentlichung auf jeden Fall behoben werden müssen. Apple yanks Google Voice from the App Store, suggestions that AT&T is to blameA week or two ago, I managed to snag an elusive invite to the Google Voice telephony service. Google acquired the developer, GrandCentral, two years ago, and the service has been in beta ever since. Foxconn increases compensation to family of worker who committed suicide
Foxconn hasn't exactly been helping itself much lately in the sad case of an employee of the company who committed suicide after apparently misplacing an iPhone prototype, with it first noting that the worker had a history of misplacing such prototypes, and then going on to offer his family a rather meager compensation of $44,000 and a free Apple laptop. Statements reveal potential iTunes ads-funded music plan
A new report observes Apple has put together contingency plans which could theoretically enable it to offer an ads-funded music service of some kind through iTunes.

Acer and ASUS reportedly freeze netbook releases until 2010
Looks like even Acer and ASUS are getting bored with the Atom N270 -- Digitimes says the two companies are suspending development of new netbooks until the first quarter of 2010 when Intel's next-gen Pine Trail platform with the Atom N450 is set to arrive. We know there isn't a lot of love up North for Rogers but they've got a bit of a surprise in store for their customers, including those with Apple's iPhone. The mobile network announced today that they were beginning deployment of the next generation 21Mbs(!!) HDSPA+ Network. Rogers Wireless begins 21Mbps HSPA+ rollout, a first in North America
It may not have beaten the likes of Australia's Telstra to the 21Mbps mark, but Rogers Wireless has still earned some pretty impressive bragging rights as the first carrier in North America to move on up to HSPA+, which (theoretically) more than doubles the maximum speeds of the current 7.2 Mbps network. The cars are expected to be announced on August 2nd, at which point the iPhone app may be announced as well. LG GD910 used for cringe-worthy demo video call
The LG wristphone has already experienced quite a bit of exposure ahead of its August UK release, but the diligent team at Orange just couldn't leave us without some extra titillation in the shape of a demo video. If you'll excuse the marketing inanity from the two reps, there's a pretty good exhibition of the GD910's video chat capabilities to be seen. Bokodes - kleine Tags statt großer Barcodes

FT: Apple planning to have a tablet out by Xmas, project "Cocktail"
Wow, the Financial Times (in an article from tomorrow) is saying that, contrary to AppleInsider's claims, Apple will have a tablet out for Christmas. They are anticipating a September launch (which would coincide with the iPod launches). Their version of the tablet (10 inches, media focused, App Store) seems to indicate that it will me more iPod than Mac, though they say "full featured, tablet-sized computer".

Security researcher shows that iPhone data isn't really that safe

iPhone suicide: Foxconn pays family for death of Sun
Management practices at Apple’s manufacturing partner, Foxconn, remain in the spotlight as yet more news reports emerge explaining the tragic death of 25-year old engineer, Sun Danyong.
The latest batch of reports claim the hapless engineer’s family have now received compensation of c.$44,000 for the death of their son, while his girlfriend was given an Apple MacBook.

Why is Apple blocking Macintosh AR9281 Atheros Wifi drivers?
Here's one that might take a bit of crowd-sourced sleuthing from the community to solve:
Atheros, a maker of tiny, low cost Wifi modules for Netbooks and MIDs (amongst other things) has product called the AR9281 (PDF Link).
The product lives in a variety of higher-end netbooks like the EeePC 1000HE. "Higher-end" because the Atheros card supports 802.11N. These machines are often used to make Hackintoshes (guilty!) because they are the fastest inexpensive netbook you can buy. However, to get the Wifi working properly, you've needed to swap out the Atheros Wifi PCIe card and replace it with a $10 card from Dell or others because there are no Apple-Atheros drivers.

I was reviewing a (really solid) 500GB Seagate drive today and it occured to me that 500GB had been the max you could plop in a laptop for about a year. China Unicom takes Apple's iPhone to China, but says no formal deal yet...
Apple has seemingly reached (or is at least closing in on) a key three-year deal with China Unicom which will see the iPhone launch in China.
China Unicom has secured the rights to distribute the iPhone in the populous country, following months of negotiation between Apple and incumbent mobile telcos in the area, as reported earlier this morning by the state-run official Shanghai Securities News.

Apple spurns Google, says no to Google Voice apps
Apple has refused to sell the Google’s much-anticipated Google Voice app through its App Store, while also removing existing apps which use the service, reports claim.
Google had sent Google Voice to Apple for approval for sale through the App Store, but it was rejected. Independent GV Mobile app developer, Sean Kovacs, also saw his app removed from the App Store, with Apple saying his software duplicates features the iPhone ships with.
Google built similar apps for BlackBerry and Android, while independent developers also ported the service to the iPhone, with apps including GV Mobile and VoiceCentral made available for a few months. These apps have now been withdrawn from t

The clamor greeting the potential September debut of the as yet completely unannounced Apple tablet device has already gathered to a crescendo, and now a Taiwanese newspaper’s grabbing its share of attention by naming some of the component suppliers for the product.

Creative debuts Android-powered Zii EGG for developers and OEMs
It's hard to know where to begin with this, but Creative has confirmed that Zii EGG handheld we saw pass through the FCC a few weeks ago, and proceeded to slap every odd marketing term the company has come up with over the past few years on it. The Zii EGG runs the new "Plaszma" platform, which has something to do with "StemCell Computing" and allows developers to simultaneously develop for Plaszma and Android. Apple iTablet component suppliers named
The clamor greeting the potential September debut of the as yet completely unannounced Apple tablet device has already gathered to a crescendo, and now a Taiwanese newspaper’s grabbing its share of attention by naming some of the component suppliers for the product.
Taiwan’s Apple Daily declares that Wintek will provide the tablet’s touch-sensitive display; Dynapack International Technology Corp. is providing the batteries; the whole device is to be manufactured by Foxconn. (Could the reason for all the recent cafuffle be that it was a prototype of this still non-existent device which went missing?)

Multitouch für Android lässt weiter auf sich warten
Google hat am Wochenende erste Teile der kommenden Android-Version mit dem Codenamen "Donut" freigegeben. Bitkom: Krise verschärft Finanzierungssituation vieler Hightech-Firmen
Ein Drittel der IT-Unternehmen spürt infolge der Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise eine Verschlechterung ihrer Finanzierungssituation. Das besagt eine repräsentative Umfrage des Hightech-Verbands Bitkom. Apple spurns Google, says no to Google Voice apps
Apple has refused to sell the Google’s much-anticipated Google Voice app through its App Store, while also removing existing apps which use the service, reports claim.
Google had sent Google Voice to Apple for approval for sale through the App Store, but it was rejected. Independent GV Mobile app developer, Sean Kovacs, also saw his app removed from the App Store, with Apple saying his software duplicates features the iPhone ships with.

China Unicom takes Apple's iPhone to China
Apple has reached a key three-year deal with China Unicom which will see the iPhone launch in China.
China Unicom has secured the rights to distribute the iPhone in the populous country, following months of negotiation between Apple and incumbent mobile telcos in the area.
The three year deal sees the telecoms firm guaranteeing annual iPhone sales of between one and two million units, though local reports suggest Apple has ultimately been unsuccessful in its attempt to persuade China Unicom to offer a revenue sharing deal.

Apple sorgt Engpässe bei Flash-Speicher
Eigentlich jedes Mal, wenn Apple neue iPods vorbereitet, kommen die Hersteller von Speicherchips in Lieferschwierigkeiten. So hat Toshiba bereits wohl bereits eine Warnung an kleinere Abnehmer ausgegeben, dass es trotz einer beinahe vollständigen Auslastung der Produktionskapazitäten zu Engpässen kommen kann.
Apple wird bis spätestens Oktober neue iPod-Modelle vorstellen, zudem soll möglicherweise ebenfalls noch in diesem Jahr ein neues Touchscreen-Gerät mit 10" Bildschirm - quasi ein vergrößerter iPod touch - auf den Markt kommen.

iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 3 und passendes SDK erschienen
Beta-Versionen des nächsten iPhone OS erscheinen weiter in Abständen von zwei Wochen. Die neue Beta bietet als sichtbare Änderung die Anzeige der bisher per Tethering übertragenen Datenmenge, was je nach Tarif nicht unwichtig sein könnte. Auch in der Beta 3 ist es nicht möglich, Tethering mit unsignierten Provider-Profilen zu aktivieren.

LG BL40 caught in the wild, given brief hands-on

Apple blocks Google Voice app, pulls similar titles
Apple has begun removing a number of third-party Google Voice apps from the App Store, while rejecting Google's official client, according to TechCrunch. Developer Sean Kovac recently announced that his GV Mobile app was pulled from the App Store, despite its approval and presence for the past few months.

Race for Developing First SATA-USB3 Bridge
If the USB 3.0 should only become available on the mass market during 2010, all manufacturers of computers and peripherals are already working on it. The main advantage of USB 3.0 is the transfer speed, and many are thinking of using it for external HD.
Bridge SATA towards USB 3.0 is one of the first device to develop. LucidPort and Fujitsu are already working on it and should release it as soon as the USB 3.0 interface hits the mass market, to offer external HD enclosures delivering over 200 MB/s, much more than the current USB 2.0 and could even be more than Firewire 800. Of course, only RAID volumes and SSDs will be able to offer such transfer speed, so it will revive the competition between high speed external HD and SSDs. In one year, the latest might be so much cheaper that we could even think of having SSDs in external storage unit, the last limiting factor being capacity.

Spotify for iPhone in Apple's Hands
Thanks to numerous readers for reporting that Spotify iPhone Apps has now been submitted for validation prior appearing to the AppStore.
If everything goes fine, it should be available on the iTunes Store in couple of days. We are also suspecting that this official announcement might be a way for Spotify developers to put pressure on the AppStore validation group.

Samsung Unveils 1 GHz ARM CPU Designed for the iPhone
Samsung unveiled a new ARM CPU, aka Cortex A9, with clock speed reaching 1 GHz, faster than the current Cortex A8 currently powering the iPhone 3GS (estimated clock speed, from 600 to 833 MHz). This new processor will not drain more power thanks to its thinner engraving process (45 nm vs. 65 nm), in other words 640 mW.If Apple could use it in future generation of iPhones, the company could also prefer to use multi core CPU, in order to better manage work load, and deactivate one core when not required. It would also imply that Apple can easily offer coding support for existing applications.

Google Voice iPhone app rejected, current GV apps lose connection with iTunes
Perhaps the big G spoke to soon when it said its new Google Voice service was coming to iPhone. First, GV Mobile developer Sean Kovacs relays a phone call he had with Apple where he was notified of his app being removed from the iTunes store for duplicating built-in iPhone features -- an app that was originally and purportedly approved by Phil Schiller himself. Verizon will run LTE trials in Seattle and Boston later this year
