Apple-Update: Apple AirPort Extreme Update 2008-001 für Tiger
Apple veröffentlicht auch heute ein Update, dieses Mal für Mac OS X 10.4.11 auf Apple-Computern mit Intel-Prozessoren. Laut Hersteller soll es die Zuverlässigkeit der AirPort-Verbindungen verbessern und ist 1,3 Megabyte groß. Es ist über die Software-Aktualisierung oder über die Apple-Support-Seite erhältlich.

AirPort-Update verhindert weitere Combo-Update-Reinstallationen
Wer sich das kürzlich veröffentlichte Update für Airport und Time Machine herunterlädt, aktualisiert nicht nur die entsprechenden Komponenten, sondern auch Mac OS X selbst. Wer das Combo-Update 10.5.2 neu installieren will, kann dies nicht tun und muss entweder auf ein Update des Updates oder Mac OS X 10.5.3 warten. Apple sichert sich iPhone-Namensrechte in Japan

Ericsson set to demo 42 Mbps end-to-end HSPA Evolution technology

Auf der Presseveranstaltung wurde er mit großem Tamtam angekündigt, in der ersten Betaversion war er dann aber doch nicht enthalten: der Interface-Builder für iPhone-Programme. OLPC keyboards literally being ripped apart

You'd think that with a name like "One Laptop Per Child," NickNeg and company would have stress-tested their laptop with some actual children, but it looks like everyone's favorite green machine just isn't up to the toddler challenge -- OLPC owners are reporting that the laptop's rubberized keyboard is easily destroyed by inquisitive kids, who are peeling the keys off like so many scratch'n'sniff stickers. Apple's top people selling off lots of stock
News from Marketwatch is that COO Timothy Cook and chief financial officer, Peter Oppenheimer are cashing in on Apple stock at around $135 to the tune of $40 million for Cook and $19 million for Openheimer. We aren't trying to scare anyone with our wild unmitigated speculation here but it isn't a great sign for the quarter when the two biggest financial people at Apple are selling at $10 below market, right?

SoCal Edison wants to cover California rooftops in solar panels

We've seen a few massive solar farms pop up out west, but it looks like Southern California Edison is taking a different approach: instead of cluttering up the desert, the company plans to build a distributed solar array on the rooftops of commercial buildings throughout SoCal. The plan is to spend $875M over five years to cover about two square miles of rooftop with the panels, which will alleviate stress on the grid by generating around 250 megawatts of juice, as much as a small power plant. Motorola lets loose dual SIM card-packing MING A1800

Motorola's Linux-based A1600 MING 2 may still not have seen a release 'round these parts, but that apparently hasn't stopped the company from churning out a new model in the form of the A1800, which has now wound up in the hands of The Boy Genius Report. According to BGR, this one shrinks things down even further while still staying "sturdy as a rock" and, somewhat interestingly, includes two SIM card slots. Apart from that, you can expect the CDMA / quad-band GSM handset to pack a 3-megapixel camera and built-in Bluetooth, but any other details seem to be a bit hard to come by at the moment.

While it doesn't exactly come as much of a surprise, it seems that Apple has plenty more goodies in mind for the iPhone (and, presumably, the iPod touch), with a recent batch of no less than six patent applications revealing some of its plans to turn the device into what it describes as a "lifestyle companion." In this case, that rather vague term refers to what is effectively an upgrade to the Nike+iPod system, with the iPhone's accelerometer and other built-in capabilities also coming into play in addition to the usual external sensors. MacNN is reporting that the iPhone may hit the Dutch shores on Saturday at 11am local time. (Do people in Europe work on Saturday?). Photoshop Express set to change the universe
OK, perhaps that is a bit of an overstatement. But it is really cool. I briefly reviewed Photoshop Express for Computerworld and came away reeling at the possibilities. While we all knew this application was coming down the pipe, Adobe made great use of Flash and delivered a very polished product.

Seit dem Browserkrieg zwischen Microsoft und Netscape gewannen Webstandards an immer größerer Bedeutung, um Webseiten in möglichst vielen Browsern gleich aussehen lassen zu können. Einen der wichtigsten Tests zur Kompatibilität mit aktuellen Webstandards, den Acid3-Test, hat das WebKit von Apple nun in der neuesten Entwicklerversion mit voller Punktzahl bestanden. Als Amazon vor nicht viel mehr als einem halben Jahr den Start eines eigenen MP3-Stores verkündete, war klar, dass sich die Konkurrenz warm anziehen muss. Oracle meldet 30 Prozent Gewinnsteigerung
Oracle hat im dritten Finanzquartal 2008 (bis 29. Feburar) einen GAAP-Umsatz von 5,3 Milliarden Dollar erwirtschaftet, was einer Steigerung von 21 Prozent gegenüber dem Vergleichsquartal des Vorjahres entspricht. Apple's secret enterprise plans
The furore surrounding Apple's move to license Microsoft's ActiveSync services to enable Exchange support on the iPhone may one day be seen as a tiny move, as the company plans to introduce wider support for the device through services supplied by Mac OS X Server.
Apple has already confirmed plans to introduce the final version of the iPhone Software Development kit in June, but whispers now claim the company may have a couple more surprises up its sleeve for WWDC 2008.
If these quietly whispered rumours are true, Apple plans to leverage its expertise in managing aspects of both the software and hardware on its platforms to deliver new generations of tools that will let users integrate iPhone with Mac OS X Server-side services and tools.

Militär-Roboter soll eigenständig WLAN-Netze aufbauen
IRobot, ein Hersteller von Haushalt-Roboterstaubsaugern, hat eine Ausschreibung des US-Militärs gewonnen. 40 Prozent der US-Studenten wollen einen Mac
Bereits letzte Woche gab es eine Studie von der University of Virginia, die die große Verbreitung von Macs an den der Uni deutlich machte. Gerade bei Studenten kann Apple nicht zu letzt aufgrund geringerer Preise immer wieder Pluspunkte einfahren. Dass belegt auch ein weiterer Bericht von Morgan Stanley. Dieser besagt, dass rund 40 Prozent der amerikanischen College-Studenten planen sich einen Mac anzuschaffen.

That's PopPhoto's conclusion after testing the Sigma DP1 with a DSLR-sized, FOVEON X3 CMOS sensor packing 14 megapixels. The image quality and color accuracy remained "steller" right up to ISO 800 where all compacts shackled with tiny sensors begin to lose control of the noise. The biggest nits are with the sluggish 9-zone AF system, an unsophisticated flash, lack of image stabilization, and delays between shots. Acid3-Test: Webkit und Opera erreichen 100 Punkte
Wenn es um Fehlerbehebungen geht, liegen das Webkit-Projekt von Apple und der norwegische Browser-Hersteller Opera mit ihren Browser-Engines offenbar ganz vorne. Beide Browser haben den Acid3-Test fast bestanden und 100 Punkte erreicht. Nur kleine Fehler sollen die beiden Projekte noch plagen, darunter einige kosmetische und der Umstand, dass der Acid3-Test selbst nicht ganz fehlerfrei ist. Oracle legt zu
Oracle konnte im abgelaufenen Geschäftsquartal einen Nettogewinn von rund 1,34 Milliarden US-Dollar und damit 30 Prozent Zuwachs im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal verbuchen. In der Schweiz ist das iPhone noch immer nicht offiziell erhältlich. Das hält einen Elektronikanbieter im schweizerischen Volketswil allerdings nicht davon ab, es nicht doch zu verkaufen. In einer Reihe mit günstigeren iPhone-Plagiaten gibt es dort das Apple-Handy für knapp 1000 Franken in der 8 GB Variante oder für 1250 Franken als 16 GB Version.

Safari darf nicht auf PCs installiert werden
Kaum jemand macht sich die Mühe, sich bei einer Neuinstallation von Software wirklich die Lizenzvereinbarung durchzulesen, bevor er sie akzeptiert. Bei Safari 3.1 ist dies zumindest für PC-Anwender fatal: Denn sie verstoßen gegen die Vereinbarung mit Apple just in dem Moment, in dem sie diese akzeptieren. Die Lizenz beschränkt nämlich eine Installation von Safari auf Rechner aus dem Hause Apple und schließt damit den PC als Plattform aus.

Zufriedenheit mit Betriebssystemen: Leopard holt Gold
Gold für Mac OS X 10.5, Silber für Linux, Bronze für Windows XP und Blech für Vista - das ist die Rangfolge, die ChangeWave ermittelt hat. Rambus gewinnt gegen Speicherhersteller
Rambus hat in einem seit den 90er-Jahren andauernden Rechtsstreit gegen die Speicherhersteller Micron und Nanya gewonnen. Security Update 20008-002 v1.1 löst Aperture-Probleme
Nach dem letzten Security Update von Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), das Apple vergangene Woche veröffentlichte, hatten vor allem Aperture-Nutzer einige Probleme. Die Pro-Anwendung konnte plötzlich auf Grund neuer Sicherheitsvorrichtungen die Druckereinstellungen nicht mehr ansteuern. Deshalb besserte Apple schnellstens nach und veröffentlichte letzte Nacht Security Update 20008-002 v1.1 sowohl für die Client- als auch die Server-Version von Leopard.

AMD schickt korrigierte Phenom-X4-Prozessoren ins Rennen
Nach wiederholten Verzögerungen und einem Bug im "Translation Lookaside Buffer" (TLB) des L3-Caches hat AMD nun mit der Auslieferung von Phenom-Prozessoren ohne diesen Fehler begonnen. Die Chips basieren auf AMDs K10-Architektur und kommen im korrigierten B3-Stepping daher. Zu erkennen sind sie am Namen, denn die Modellnummer 9x50 zeigt an, dass es sich um eine der neuen CPUs handelt. Sharp will increase its production of blue laser diodes

Rate of Returned Discs still under Warranty
Hardware.fr has published the return rates of hard drives under warranty of a large online retailer. It involves hard drives which were in use between 6 months and one year.
The most reliable manufacturer is Seagate, which has a rate of return of 1.5% followed closely by Western Digital and Hitachi that are 1.7 and 1.8%. Samsung has a "good" rate of return of 2.5%.
Of course, these figures should not be taken litterally since they do not take into account returnsas a PC repair.
Thus, it certainly does not include problems with 2.5" drives with Seagate Firmware 7.01 that would have significantly increased the rate of failure of that brand.
We must also take into account that some series, or certain capacities have different failure rates.

Impossible to reinstall the combo update 10.5.2
Source: XLR8yourMac If a Mac OS X crashes with say a kernel panic often times the best thing to do is reinstall the latest Combo update. It will overwrite files and repeat stages of maintenance. In most cases, the problems will be solved.
Remember, however, that if you have the latest updates Airport and Time Machine, this lifeline will not be allowed.
In fact, these updates change the version number of Mac OS X, preventing combo update from working. Apple need to change these updates or release a new 10.5.3 which will allow this reinstall.
We take this opportunity to inform you that the latest Security Update we are talking about causes serious instability in some people's machines. We advise you not to install it while waiting to get a clearer picture.
We are also advising those who can not do without their machine for the time of a total reinstallation of MAC OS X to think about cloning their syst

The OLPC XO gets overclocked, loses its innocence

Virginia Tech students create "smart" brake lights for cars

Students from Virginia Tech have developed a new system that can show not just whether you're stopping, but if you're slowing down, when you're about to stop, and how quickly you're pressing the pedal.
