Microsoft releasing XP SP3 this week?
Filed under: Desktops, LaptopsXP may not EOL until this June, but that doesn't mean it's not in need of the same kind of tender lovin' update packs as OSes of every variety occasionally receive. And according to CRN, the long awaited XP SP3 could be due out as early as tomorrow, or possibly later this week. We'll keep an eye out -- we know it's hard to let XP go

SanDisk Sansa Fuze hands-on

So we've had a SanDisk Sansa Fuze hanging around the office for a few days and already we can tell you that fans of the Sansa line will find it a welcome addition to the line. The interface feels pretty snappy and it's got all the geeky things you're after (FM radio, microSDHC, 1.9-inch display) at a price $70 cheaper than the nano at the 8GB level. Plus, we know it sounds old school, but we're really into the tactile scroll / click wheel, and the Fuze has the best one we've used in a long time. ASUS releases Splendid HD1 video card, sure does have a way with names

We're still a little hazy as to exactly what ASUS's new Splendid HD1 "video enhance card" actually does differently than most other 2D-enhanced devices, but the company claims it ratchets up 1080p video quality on both digital and analog outputs, and it'll fit in right along side those Splendid-based Xondar cards. Of course, it's also got HDCP (which is a start), but it's starting to smell a little gimmicky around here, splendid or not.[Via F

Macroswiss building battlefield-ready SpyRobot 6x6

Acer not developing game console after all

Comments made earlier this week from Acer senior VP James Wong had the intarwebz ablaze with hunches that the firm could be entering the console market in one way or another. Now, however, a UK spokesperson has clarified that there "was a major misunderstanding," and outrightly asserted that the outfit was "not going to release any game console." Verband der Musikindustrie werden Mafia-Methoden vorgeworfen
Ursprünglich mit dem simplen Ansehen gegründet, einen einheitlichen technischen Standard für Schallplatte zu schaffen, ist der Verband der Musikindustrie in den USA (RIAA) heute weit mehr als eine bloße Interessengemeinschaft. In jüngster Vergangenheit machte er sich vor allem mit heftigen Konflikten mit Musik-Tauschbörsen weltweit einen Namen. Auch vor der Durchsetzung horrender Schadenserstazforderungen gegen zum Teil minderjährige Internetnutzer schreckte die RIAA nicht zurück - und wird dafür nun öffentlich an den Pranger gestellt.

Ein Marktplatz geschlossen: eBay gibt auf

Kevin Rose has more iPhone "info"
Kevin Rose of Diggnation/digg.com and Pownce fame is predicting that the iPhone is getting a front camera for video conferencing. He also "predicts" that it will go 3G in the coming months - never mind that both Steve Jobs and AT&T's CEO have also confirmed this.
Keep in mind, Kevin Rose is 0 fer in iPhone predictions, previously predicting:
January 2007 launch on "all" providers, both CDMA and GSM (June 29th launch)
Extremely small form factor (not that small)
Two battery design (with single charger) -- one for playing music, the other for phone functio

Apple avoids Class Action over dithering
Source: Chicago Tribune According to Apple, all Macs are capable of displaying millions of colours. However, notebook and iMac have panels which can only show 262000. In order to achieve the appearance of millions of colours, Apple uses dithering, which mixes several colors to give the illusion of more.
The vast majority of the public will not see the difference, unless they go specifically out of their way to see the shortcomings of dithering.
Last May, two photographers attempted to launch a class action claiming the specifications of the machines in question were false. They decided to withdraw their complaint because it has not garnered enough suitors, but perhaps an amicable settlement with Apple helped.
We know nothing about this agreement, and especially the amount obtained by photographers, but it has certainly not been enormous, given that the outcome of

Viele der gegen Apple gerichteten Klagen geben Anwälten allenfalls Anlass zum Lachen, denn sie entbehren oft jeder Grundlage. Einige jedoch sind durchaus ernst zu nehmen, wie zum Beispiel solche, die sich gegen eine Patentrechtsverletzung richten. War es zuletzt ZapMedia, die wegen der Verwendung ihrer Patente in iTunes klagten, betritt dieser Tage ein Unternehmen namens Mirror Worlds die Bühne. Erstmals ist das Datensicherungskonzept TimeMachine Zielscheibe der Vorwürfe. Auch hier soll Apple "alles nur geklaut" haben und nun für insgesamt vier Patentverletzungen gerade stehen.

Was sind Ostereier? Die landläufige Antwort: Kleine, mit Schokolade gefüllte Ovale, die nur im Frühling verkauft werden und genauso schnell in den Mägen der Käufer verschwinden, wie sie in den Regalen der Supermärkte aufgetaucht sind. Richtig? Nein. Ostereier, englisch "Easter Eggs", sind nämlich etwas ganz anderes: Kleine, mit Humor gefüllte Teile von Computerprogrammen, die von ihren Entwicklern tief im Programmcode versteckt wurden und nur findigen Suchern auffallen. Linux Australien kritisiert Apple & lobt Microsoft

Intel erhöht erneut Dividende um zehn Prozent
Wie Intel kurz vor Ostern bekannt gab, erhöht das Unternehmen die Dividende um zehn Prozent auf dann runde 14 Cent pro Aktie erhöhen. Nach der Steigerung um 13 Prozent auf 12,75 Cent erst im November letzten Jahres ist dies die zweite Erhöhung binnen weniger Monate.

Drei kleine Softwareupdates sind in den letzten Tagen hier eingetrudelt:

Die iTunes-Alternative für Windows (auch Vista), Mac OS X und Linux behebt in der neuesten Version ein Problem mit der Anzeige der Covergrafiken sowie ein paar kleinere Fehler. Floola kopiert Songs auf den iPod wie auch vom iPod zurück, konvertiert Audio- und Videodateien in ein iPod-kompatibles Format (für YouTube- oder MySpace-Videos muss lediglich die Webadresse angegeben werden). Das Programm muss nicht großartig installiert werden und lässt sich auch auf den iPod kopieren und direkt von dort ausführen.

Problems with 'downloading' Safari on the PC
A controversy is currently gaining ground about how Apple is trying to impose Safari on the PC. Indeed, rather than just downloading it, Apple has decided to use the system which updates iTunes and Quicktime with Windows for downloading Safari.
This is probably the first time that Apple is using iTunes-iPod so openly to try to impose another of their products, and as one might expect, it leaves a bad taste. Critics are vocal, especially those directly affected such as John Lilly CEO of the Mozilla Foundation, which offers Firefox.
Hard to tell whether this plan will make a lot of noise, but it operates in a global context, which could erode the image of cool that Apple surfs on. This is even truer since another controversy has begun to manifest itself once again concerning the iPhone SDK. Apple reportedly blocked any possibility of accessing music from the device. Mobile telephones OK on Emirates airline
Source: Generation NT The airline Emirates announced that it will now be possible to make phone calls (and send SMS's) from your mobile on its planes equipped with a special relay station.
This relay station developed by AeroMobile will be activated during phases of theflight and allow any passenger to make calls and have access to account data.
The crew, however, will keep control of the system and can disable it during night flights, for example.
It is still unclear what price will be charged for communications, but it may be expensive since the calls pass through a communications satellite before reaching the ground.

Robot drummer goes solo, plays solos
Filed under: Robots Finally you can give your drummer his walking papers. Let's be honest, he was the weak link in the band, right? From now on, all your percussive duties can be carried out by this ingenious bot, whose only duty in artificial-life is to roll around, find objects to bang on, and create funky little loops. Basically, the Yellow Drum Machine uses two microphones / sound sensors on its "head" to search out surfaces suitable for rocking, then uses two sticks to play a beat, record it, and accompany the playback. UCLA researchers create self-healing, power-generating artificial muscle

Meizu's M8 gets more UI tweaks for its music player
