New shots of Intel's Netbook / Eco PC uncovered

One of our totally awesome tipsters got his hands on some more pics of Intel's forthcoming (we hope) Netbook, or as they call it, the Eco PC. These shots are way clearer than the previous pictures we've spied, and showcase the TI-99-esque keyboard that has at least one member of the Engadget team pretty darn excited. E-Plus Chef sieht Ende des klassischen Mobilfunks kommen
E-Plus-Chef Thorsten Dirks erwartet, dass der Mobilfunk-Markt vor einer grundlegenden Umwälzung steht. Airport Extreme supports Time Machine backup

Wind und Sonne sollen Mobilfunk-Masten versorgen
Der Mobilfunk erobert auch immer abgelegenere Regionen, in denen nicht immer eine ausreichend stabile Stromversorgung für die Funkmasten über das lokale Netz gewährleistet ist. MacBook Air hack unearths more relatively inaccessible USB connectors

Unfortunately, Apple's MacBook Air still only arrives with a lone USB port. Save for using a dongle / hub, there's really been no other way to connect a bevy of USB peripherals to the lappie -- until now. Thanks to a curious hacker with a thing for perusing microchip documentation, he discovered that the internal ICH-8 southbridge chip actually has five low-speed and two high-speed USB controllers. Kritik an iTunes-Update: Bringt huckepack Safari 3 mit
Wer sich iTunes oder den Browser Safari von Apple auf dem Windows-Rechner installiert, erhält eine Update-Funktion dazu, die regelmäßig nach neuen Versionen der installierten Programme sucht. Unlimited iTunes subscription coming?
The Financial Times is reporting that Apple is in negotiations with the big record companies to offer an unlimited subscription model. The deal would give customers access to the entire iTunes music Library in exchang efor a premium price put on Apple devices (iPod, iPhone, etc).
Nokia currently has this model and offers the music companies $80 per handset for the priveledge - to be split up based on the downloading habits of its users. Apple, on the otherhand, is only offering $20/device.

Adobe developing Flash for iPhone
Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen has confirmed his company is now working with Apple with a view to offering Flash support on the iPhone.
The move follows Apple’s release of the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK). Narayen, who was speaking during the company’s conference call with Adobe investors last night, confirmed the company plans to create Flash player for the iPhone as an application which will be distributed through the App Store to iPhone users.
This indicates some change in the relationship between Apple and Adobe.

Safari 3.1 for Mac and PC released (Updated with review)
Remember those super-fast WebKit specs we told you about a few weeks ago? Remember how it was going to help Safari 3.1 become a much faster browser? What about all of the other goodies? Now you can get them in a final version of Safari. Apple today unleashed Safari 3.1 using much more recent version of the WebKit engine. Preliminary results (meaning going to all of our favorite sites) are quite good.
It remains to be seen if speed increases like this (and iPhone/iPod touch) help

Adobe clarifies Flash for iPhone claim
Adobe has issued a statement to clarify claims the company is working to deliver Flash support for the iPhone.
Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen confirmed his company to be working to deliver Flash support on the iPhone during Adobe's Q1 financial conference call last night. This afternoon (US time), Adobe issued a statement of clarification - and it appears Apple will have to become involved in order to bring Flash support to the device.
"However, to bring the full capabilities of Flash to the iPhone Web-browsing experience, we do need to work with Apple beyond and above what is available through the SDK and the current license around it," the company said.

Apple updates Time Machine and Airport - Now working together!
Apple has now filled what was a gaping hole in their Time Machine backup ecosystem. You can now use Airport connected HFS+ Formatted USB hard drives to backup your Leopard computers. Apple had promised this feature long ago and then pulled the advertising for the "Airport Disk Time Machine Backups" and hasn't able to deliver during the first two releases of Leopard. This might have been more difficult than originally planned (though our Flux Capacitor has helped many).
Apple has now released Airport and Time Machine updates that now allow you to see Airport connected USB drives and back up to them like Time Capsule drives.

Windows iTunes users being asked to install Safari by Software Update
Windows users who have Apple's Software Update installed are getting notices that there is a new version of Safari available for upgrade - even if they never installed Safari in the first place. Safari 3.1 for Windows is Apple's first Safari version not to carry the Beta moniker. There are definitely two schools of thought on this one - we are NOT taking sides. Sony pulls its head slightly out of its backside
Sony is probably the biggest perpetrator of loading up their brand new laptops with crapware (stuff like 30-day trials of services that almost no one would ever want - like AOL). Most Sony laptop owners we know just install a fresh OS on their machines the first time they use them rather than try to uninstall the litany of the crapware individually. Well, if you are in the market for a Sony laptop, your initial experience with your great Sony hardware could be getting slightly better.

Welche Programme werden fürs iPhone verboten?
Die Ankündigung der Möglichkeit, eigene Programm auf dem iPhone und iPod touch laufen lassen zu können, versetzte viele Programmierer in Freudenstimmung. Dass Apple den einzigen Vertriebsweg für solche Programme über den App Store nach eigenem Gutdünken kontrolliert, wurde in diesen Momenten schnell übersehen - das Recht, auch zahlenden Entwicklern den Vertrieb ihres Programmes zu verweigern, behält sich Apple in den Lizenzvereinbarungen explizit vor. Wie viele USB-Ports hat das MacBook Air wirklich?
Den Aufwand, den einige Bastler in ihr Hobby stecken, ist oft erstaunlich. Auch eine Reihe von Apple-Fans sind fleißige Tüftler und modifizieren ihre Produkte gerne und regelmäßig. Safari 3.1: Neue Links gleich als Tab öffnen
Sehr oft erscheinen nach der Veröffentlichung von Programmen oder Hardware-Komponenten nützliche Handgriffe, die den Umgang mit dem jeweiligen Produkt erleichtern können. Meist entdeckten diese "Hacks" die Nutzer selber, wenn sie sich mit so manchem Produkt ausgiebig beschäftigt haben. Auch im Falle von Safari 3.1 gibt es einen sehr nützlichen Trick, der alle Links, die man beim Besuchen von Webseiten anklickt, in neuen Tabs und nicht in einem neuen Fenster öffnet.

Kingston stellt drei Paare DDR3-Speicher vor

Macs an US-Universitäten weiter im Aufwind
Beeindruckend stark wächst der Marktanteil der Apple-Notebooks Jahr für Jahr weiter an. Jenseits der Statistik wissen offenbar vor allem US-amerikanische Studierende ganz genau, welche Multimedia-Ausstattung am besten zu ihnen passt. An der University of Virginia hat der Mac bereits einen Anteil von 26 Prozent erreicht - Tendenz steigend. Die umfangreiche Statistik zeigt zudem, dass Apple bei den Studierenden auch bei den MP3-Playern und Smartphones auf der Überholspur fährt.

Nvidia verschiebt „Hybrid SLI“ auf Ende April
Nvidias neue Technologien, die unter dem Namen „Hybrid SLI“ zusammengefasst sind, werden sich weiter verspäten. Die darin enthaltenen wichtigen Positionen „GeForce Boost“ und „Hybrid Power“ wurden bereits vor Monaten vorgestellt und fälschlicherweise im Laufe dieser Zeit einigen Mainboards zugesprochen, die dies gar nicht unterstützen (können).

SMD Ultra Trencher 1 starts its new job: laying pipes and cables in the briny deep

What's supposedly the largest deep-sea remote-controlled robot ever built was rolled out this week: the SMD Ultra Trencher 1 (UT1), a 50 ton, £10m ($19.8m) ROV the size of a small domicile (25.5 x 25.5 x 18.3 feet). Capable of sucking up two megawatts of power while using its "jet swords" trench deep sea pipelines up to a meter wide and 2.5 meters deep into the sea floor (while operating at a depth of up to 1500m), the UT1 is clearly just in time. We hear the CIA errant anchors are due to snip another three or four deep-sea internet backbone cables, so the UT1's got its work cut out for it.

Mac mini wird doch nicht eingestellt
Vor rund 10 Monaten spekulierte AppleInsider über die baldige Einstellung des kleinsten Macs. Auch im Oktober 2007 hielten die Gerüchte zum Ende des Mac mini an. Bis heute wurde das Gerät jedoch immer wieder leicht optimiert und nicht eingestellt. AppleInsider muss jetzt seine zuvor gewagte Prognose revidieren und berichtet, dass der Mac mini doch nicht eingestellt wird.

Saubere PC-Systeme nur gegen Aufpreis? - Sony rudert zurück
"Man kann's ja mal versuchen" schienen die Sony-Bosse zu murmeln, als sie gestern reumütig ihren erst einen Tag zuvor angekündigten Masterplan zurückzogen. Für großzügig hielten sie es vermutlich, ihren Kunden gegen 50 US-Dollar Aufpreis ein "sauberes" Notebook anzubieten. Denn Sony VAIOs werden üblicherweise vollgepackt mit überwiegend nutzlosen Trial-Programmen ausgeliefert, die sowohl der System-Performance als auch den Nerven der Kunden zur Last fallen. Da kommt ein Befreiungsangebot gerade recht - aber doch bitte gratis, wie auch Sony nun eingesehen hat.

Geräuschlose Zukunft: Durchbruch in der Prozessorkühlung
Lüfter sind in der Computerwelt seit jeher ein notwendiges Übel: Je mehr Leistung ein Computerchip erzeugen muss, desto wärmer wird er - bis er sich irgendwann selbst zerstört. Dies verhindern sensorgesteuerte Lüfter, die den Chip innerhalb der Betriebstemperatur halten, aber den Benutzer mit hörbarem Summen und Surren stören. Nicht mehr lange: Denn schon ab 2009 könnten absolut stille Lüfter ohne bewegliche Bestandteile in Notebooks und Desktop-Rechner Einzug halten.

Back UP over WiFi - is this really viable?
Time Machine is one of the big new features of Leopard, not only due to the simplicity of making a back-up, but also from the point of view of recovering files that have been deleted or modified since the original back-up.
Using an external disk, USB or Firewire, this back-up proves to be simple and comfortable - one only has to remember to connect the disk regularly.
Following the concept of the Time Capsule it is now possible to use Time Machine with an external disk connected to an Airport BAse Station N. On paper this is a very elegant solution. It is just necessary to connect to the network and everything is done behind the scenes with any user intervention.
However in reality, this solution is not so tempting. Since, most of us, maybe all, have several tens of GB of data on their disks, and sometimes several hundred, shared among hundreds of thousands of files.
Using WiFi, the backup to a Time Capsule disk (or to a disk connected to an Airport base station N) is very slow. Ou

Sony's 25 megapixel Alpha A900 to arrive in August or September

We already spent some time grappling with Sony's monster full-frame Alpha A900 prototype at PMA, but the company's displaying an updated version at the Photo Imaging Expo in Japan, and reps are apparently now saying that the 24.6 megapixel DSLR will be launched during IFA in August or Photokina in September. Other than that, there's not much we didn't already know -- which means there's really not that much at all -- but there are some more shots of this nifty clear-bodied display unit at the read link for your ocular delight.

Microsoft unloads 500 GTA IV Xbox 360 Elite consoles

While folks at the Xbox 360 repair lab know good and well how to strip a console back to its birthday suit, Microsoft is going the opposite direction with its limited run of Grand Theft Auto IV Elites. Sony drops Fresh Start fee after backlash
Sony tonight has already dropped the fee for its Fresh Start program less than a day after it was introduced. While the VAIO TZ offered with Fresh Start does not come with the option enabled by default, the company now allows the option to remove trial software to be enabled for free versus the $50 cost from before. Sony has not officially stated

Array-based flash memory could enable 1TB memory chips
