Gibson still thinks a video game is a musical instrument, sues Harmonix for Rock Band
Filed under: Gaming
We still think Gibson's attempt to claim that Guitar Hero violates its patent on "simulating a musical performance with a musical instrument" is totally unfounded and ridiculous for a number of reasons (it involves a "3-D headset," for one), but we can sort of see why the company is now suing Harmonix as well -- they're a Fender outfit, after all. The third in a series of petulant lawsuits filed by the notoriously litigious guitar maker over the patent claims

Sony is giving "Fresh Start" a fresh start, losing the $50 fee
Filed under: Laptops
After a minor outcry at Sony's new "Fresh Start" option to skip the crapware on TZ laptops for a hefty $50 charge, the company has seen the error of its ways and is going to start offering the option for free as of tomorrow. Sure, it would've been nice to have it like that from the start, and there's no word yet if there will be refunds for those who did fork over the $50, but we got the impression from the Sony spokesperson who spoke to us that Sony Japan was surprised as we were about the charge, and quickly asked for it to be removed. We're still waiting for word as to whether this option will hit other VAIOs, but we're cautiously optimistic

Researchers claim to have developed robotic AI on par with a puppy
Filed under: RobotsThe robot uprising, it inches ever closer -- researchers working on the EU-funded COSPAL project have developed a new robotic AI that they say is the most advanced of its type ever created. Using both learning neural AI techniques and traditional rules-based AI as a control mechanism, the robot can be trained "like a child or a puppy," and has managed to figure out simple sorting tasks on its own. The next step is to try and integrate the system into a car that can adjust to unforeseen driving conditions, but the researchers in charge aren't worried about creating an army of KARRs set to mow us all down -- according to researcher Michael Felsberg, adult-level AI based o

Fans with no moving parts mobiles
Source: Dailytech If the computer industry has recently decided to focus on power consumption and its components in order to decrease or contain it, they still need to be actively cooled by fans which are noise generators.
Researchers have developed a ventilation system totally devoid of moving parts.
The airflow is generated simply by turning the assembly. The difficulty of the exercise is to increase the maximum current in the system and thereby create the maximum air flow without ever causing arcing which would destroy the components supposed to be cooled.
The airflow achieved is far higher than that generated by a conventional fan, up to 35x (surface equivalent), according to researchers

It is now a few months since the AACS experienced a crisis when the protection of the same name was bypassed with ridiculous ease even though it was supposed to be infallible.
With the victory of Blu-ray, the Majors had hoped that the establishment of BD + would allow them to have additional respite.
However, in late 2007, the company whiwh makes editing software AnyDVD announced that it had found a way to circumvent the BD +. They have now proven it and have started to market their software capable of recopying any capacity Blu-ray.
The BD + system is based on a virtual machine loaded on the hard drive, it will certainly be easy to exploit the loophole in the coming discs being sold, but it will be once again a means of another step in a battle with no end.
If we can understand the position of Majors who refuse to leave themselves open to looting, it is still difficult to sympathise with them totally because these protections also complicate the lives of consumers, who m

The first DisplayPort cards are here
The VESA association announced that it has issued the first DisplayPort specifications. It concerns the HD Radeon 3000 chipset and integrated video cards AMD 780G.
Although these are the first certified products, others are already on sale, such as monitors from Dell and Samsung.
The displayPort, legitimate successor of DVI, is going to have to fight HDMI in order to prevail. While displayPort has been late starting, it has the main advantage of not requiring the payment of royalties.
Eventually, one of these two formats will replace the aging DVI. La Mode is now small and compact cables simplifying the connection of peripherals while having very good data transfer.
Just as with the gradual disappearance of VGA, we should begin by finding hybrids video cards with a DVI connector and DisplayPort connector.

Cellink T/M: a swiveling USB stick, card reader, and mobile charger thingamajig
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
Oh great Korean gods of peculiar gadgetry what have you done? That's the Cellink T/M from Human C&C. The device functions as a mass storage device or microSD card reader when standing in a straight-up, USB stick mode. Give it a flip, swing and slide and you've got a USB charging solution for mobile devices while simultaneously blocking all the ports on your laptop. Mechanical art or overly engineered crap? Really, without any real detail we can't decide.[Via AVING]

Up close with Dell's Latitude E4300 and E4200 ultra-portables with DisplayPort
Filed under: Laptops
Ultra-portables are by the far the sexiest class of laptops. Especially when they start at just 2.2-pounds (1kg) like Dell's upcoming 12.1-inch E4200 or 3-pounds for the 13.3-inch E4300. Both pack LED backlit displays; Centrino 2 chipsets; Firewire, eSATA, 2x audio, ExpressCard 34, and at least 2x USB ports; integrated UMA graphics; DDR3 800MHz with Intel Turbo Memory 2.0; DisplayPort; and a host of security features to keep corporate IT types happy. The E4300 differs with a higher WXGA+ resolution, modular optical bay, peppier CPU options, and a choice of beefier hard disk drives instead of the 32GB or 64GB SSD restriction of the E4200. Ein erst jetzt aufgetauchtes Apple-Patent vom September 2006 zeigt, dass der Hersteller aus Cupertino dazu bereits Ideen hat. Little old lady suing Sony, Samsung, Nokia and everyone else for infringing on her laser patents
Oh sure, she looks friendly enough. But don't let her matronly, argyle looks fool you. Retired Columbia University Professor, Gertrude Neumark Rothschild, is looking to extract some cold, hard cash from a who's who of Consumer Electronics giants. Otherwise, they can forget about importing their goods into the US. Rothchild's complaint filed with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on February 20th claims that some 30 companies are violating a patent she owns for light-emitting and laser diodes. Today, the ITC has agreed to investigate the matter. It's worth noting that Rothchild has already successfully tested the legislative waters with lawsuits against Philips and others -- the Philips matter was settled out of court earlier this month. In other words, her case has legs. Still, we have very

Microsoft and Intel want to improve the support for multi-CPUs
With the Powermac G4 bi-CPU, Apple had made a precursor to computing for the masses. Nowadays this has become more general. It is difficult to follow Moore's law with just one core, thus the constructors of the processors have started to push in the direction of multiplication of the cores. Intel and AMD propose processors with 4 cores, soon 6 and Intel among its prototypes has something that has 80 processors
On paper, the cpu power is strongly increased, however in practice this is not always the case since few applications are able to draw the best from these configurations.
Programming for this is enormously complicated. It is necessary to cut the program in smaller and smaller pieces and then share them out among the cores, and then collect together the results. The work of optimization becomes more paramount, and it becomes more and more complicated.
In order to clear the ground, Intel and Microsoft have joined the university of Illinois and Berkeley to work on simplifying the opt

The iPhone encourages web surfing
Source : Informationweek Those lucky guys with an iPhone know full well; contrary to the immense majority of mobile telephones, one can easily surf the web in a comfortable way without having truncated and deformed pages.
Several studies have proven that the iPhone has opened up an unprecedented on-the-go use the web.
A new study released byM:Metrics gives another hit on this nail. According to a survey, 85% of iPhone users have used it to surf the web in January.
Paradoxically, this use is ahead of watching video (31%) and even listening to music(75%).
With such a study of use, the Albis commission will surely lower the royalty on the iPhone!

Sony pulls its head slightly out of its backside.

Sony hates you, offers $50 "Fresh Start" option to build your laptop crapware-free

Sony has quite the history of crippling excellent, beautiful hardware with horrible, useless software. The company's UX UMPC bluescreened on us the first time we turned it on, and crashed the first time we tried to shut it down thanks to all the bloatware on it, while a Laptop Mag review says their Vaio TZ ran "as if it were broken" before they managed to wipe it clean. There's are a lot of reasons to pick another laptop over the MacBook Air -- especially if you're into little things like "useful ports" -- but the comparison to non-Apple hardware isn't even relevant unless you're willing to switch to OS X, right? Well, the crew over at Xbit Labs decided to even the slate and evaluate the MBA solely as a Windows machine, wiping the drive clean of Leopard and installing Vista Ultimate. Although actually getting Vista on the Air was a bit troublesome due to the lack of a built-in optical drive and the Vista installer's refusal to wipe out the OS X partition, once installed the O
