InnovaTek's hand-sized microreactor converts liquid fuel into hydrogen

Researchers find folks prefer robots that engage in small talk
Filed under: RobotsWhile it doesn't exactly come as much of a surprise, a team of researchers from ATR Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan have found that people are more accepting of robots if they engage in a little small talk during conversations, as opposed to leaving unnerving silences that make folks unclear of their intentions. The researchers also found that of the 38 people surveyed, most were willing to accept delays in responses of one or two seconds, but that they much preferred if the robot threw in a "well" or "er" to fill the gap if it was taking any longer for them to muster up an answer.

FCC releases 700MHz auction details, Verizon, AT&T big winners

After yesterday's wrap-up of the gargantuan Auction 73 to offload the newly-freed 700MHz spectrum, it looks like the two champions are Verizon and AT&T. Big Red has emerged with most of the highly coveted C Block, a logical move considering its recent foray into the wide world of open access. Plant Dell den iPhone-Killer?
Einem Bericht der Digitimes zufolge plant der Computerhersteller Dell demnächst die Vorstellung eines iPhone-Konkurrenten. The new RAID cards no longer sports a soldered wire
Last month we spoke about the RAID cards where Apple has added a soldered wire by hand.
José, a reader living in Canada, has just received a RAID card. This card, the latest version, no longer has this extra wire soldered to it.
Thus Apple has redesigned the PCB since the first series of cards.

Windows iTunes users being asked to install Safari by Software Update
Windows users who have Apple's Software Update installed are getting notices that there is a new version of Safari available for upgrade - even if they never installed Safari in the first place. Safari 3.1 for Windows is Apple's first Safari version not to carry the Beta monikor.
There are definitely two schools of thought on this one.
The first is that Apple is using its market leading position in music jukebox software to push its browser - like Microsoft used its market leading position in operating systems to push IE a few years back. While effective, it isn't really fair to the Firefoxes and Operas of the world who don't have that leverage to fall back on. It is also a bit misleading to say it is a "software update" when it was never installed in the first place.
The other school of thought is that Apple isn't forcing this on anyone. There is simply a Apple (not iTunes) software update that is letting Windows users know that there is

Apple will Musik-Applikationen im iPhone SDK unterbinden
Viele, aber auch nicht alle Programme soll es von Drittherstellern mit der Entwicklungsumgebung für das iPhone und der Software-Version 2.0 im Juni geben. Allen Anschein nach unterbindet Apple Entwicklern bereits in der aktuellen Beta-Version des SDK die Integration von Musik-Applikationen.

Google Gadget Maker: 7 Miniprogramme für Web 2.0
Google bietet allen, die ihre Googleseite per iGoogle personalisiert haben, einen neuen Dienst an: Mit dem Gadget Maker kann der Nutzer verschiedene Infos ablegen und anderen zugänglich machen. So lassen sich ein Miniblog, eine Einkaufliste oder eine Liste mit Lieblingsfilmen anlegen oder Fotos online stellen. Bislang gab es den Dienst nur auf Englisch, nun ist er auch in Deutsch verfügbar. Adobe stellt Zukunft von Flash auf dem iPhone klar
Viele Meldungen und Gerüchte rankten sich in den letzten Tagen um eine Flash-Portierung für das iPhone - Steve Jobs befand Flash für noch nicht gut genug für das Apple-Mobiltelefon, Adobe-CEO Narayen hielt kurzerhand dagegen, man entwickle dann eben selbständig über das iPhone-SDK und den App Store einfach ein extra Flash-Programm. Adobe räumt nun mit einer offiziellen Meldung auf und will nun doch zusammen mit Apple an einer Flash-Version fürs iPhone arbeiten, berichtet Information Week.

LG Hamburg: Urteil zur Beweisführung in Filesharing-Klagen

Microcode der ATI-Grafikkarten für 3D-Treiber unter Linux
Um die Entwicklung von freien 3D-Treibern für seine Grafikprozessoren zu beschleunigen, hat AMD nun den Microcode nahezu aller Radeon-Chips freigegeben. Endlich: Apple beseitigt Probleme mit AirPort
Mit der AirPort Extreme Basisstation hat Apple seine Kunden besonders lang Probleme zugemutet. Der Router neigte zu Abstürzen, Time Machine funktionierte nicht mit Festplatten, die angeschlossen wurden und Apple stellte sich stur. Airfoil jetzt für AirPort Express 802.11n bereit
Die Möglichkeit über die AirPort-Express-Station Musik an beliebige Lautsprecher im Haus zu übertragen, ist praktisch. Noch praktischer ist dabei das Programm Airfoil. Intels Classmate PC kommt in den Handel
Intel will seine Version eines Billig-Laptops künftig auch über Händler in den USA und Europa vertreiben. Wie Lila Ibrahim, Intels General Manager für den Bereich aufstrebende Märkte, erklärte, soll der kinderfreundliche und für den Einsatz in Schulen entwickelte Classmate PC für einen Preis zwischen 250 und 350 Dollar in die Läden kommen. Niedrige Lagerbestände weisen auf neue iMacs hin
Im Zuge der Umstellung auf Intels neue Penryn-CPUs sind bald auch der iMac und der Mac mini an der Reihe. Bisher setzen beide Rechnertypen noch auf die Vorgängergeneration, die noch in 65nm gefertigt wird. Nach den beiden letzten Aktualisierungen des MacBooks und der MacBook-Pro-Modelle dürfte es nicht mehr allzu lange dauern, bis auch die verbleibenden Desktop-Systeme umgerüstet werden. Dazu passen auch aktuelle Hinweise auf niedrige Lagerbestände bei den Händlern.

Neue Alpha-Version von OpenOffice 3.0
Wie Golem berichtet, haben die OpenOffice-Entwickler eine neue Alpha-Version von OpenOffice 3.0 vorgestellt, die eine Installation von X11 unnötig macht. Die Entwickler warnen bei der Installation der Bürosuite allerdings davor, dass ein Backup aller Dokumente, die in OpenOffice.org Aqua verwendet werden, existieren sollte, da es sich nur um eine Alpha-Testversion handelt. Adobes voreilige Flash-Ankündigung
Vielen Dank erstmal für die ganzen Mails zu diesem Thema. Wir haben die Flash-Ankündigung von Adobes CEO Shantanu Narayen natürlich nicht verpennt, aber hin und wieder lohnt es sich einfach, ein wenig abzuwarten. Und siehe da: Wieder auf Engadget lesen wir nun, dass es sich bei Narayens Aussage wohl schlicht um leeres Managergeschwafel handelt. So ganz einfach sei die Sache nun doch nicht, und ohne Apples Hilfe wird aus Flash für iPhone und den iPod touch trotz SDK wohl vorerst gar nichts.

Immer mehr iPod/iPhone-Surfer im Web
In den USA ist der Prozentsatz der Internetnutzer, die mit einem iPod touch oder iPhone unterwegs sind zwischen Dezember und März um 64 Prozent angestiegen. Die daraus resultierenden 0,23 Prozent Anteil an den Gesamtsurfern mögen nicht viel klingen, stellen aber beispielsweise Nokias 0.01 Prozent deutlich in den Schatten. Weltweit liegt Nokia mit 0.25 Prozent allerdings noch deutlich vor den 0.08 Prozent von Apples Mobile Safari.

Dan Schlitz und Vishal Singhal haben mit ihrer Firma Thorrn Micro Technologies und Unterstützung durch die National Science Foundation einen kleinen geräuschlosen Lüfter ohne bewegliche Teile entwickelt. Gerüchte um Musik-Abo über iTunes (mal wieder)
Einmal mehr gibt es Gerüchte um ein kommendes Abo-Modell für Musik aus dem iTunes Store:
Die Financial Times (deutscher Artikel hier) will wissen, dass Apple derzeit mit der Musikindustrie über zwei Abo-Varianten verhandelt. So soll der Kunde ähnlich wie bei Nokias "Comes with Music"-Konzept gegen einen Aufpreis beim Kauf eines iPod oder iPhone zeitlich befristeten Vollzugriff auf Musik aus dem iTunes Store erhalten. Das andere Modell sieht Zahlungen von 7-8 Dollar monatlich vor, dafür kann beliebig viel Musik gehört werden und man darf jährlich etwa 50 Titel dauerhaft auf dem Rechner speichern.
Was dabei herauskommt bleibt abzuwarten. Gerüchte über iTunes Musik-Abos gibt es seit Apple Musik verkauft, allerdings waren die (vermeintlichen) Infos selten so konkret.

AMD bringt fehlerfreie Phenom-Prozessoren

Western Digital markets drives with 320GB platters
Western Digital announced in late January the production of platters of 320GB for 3,5" disks.They just started marketing products using these platters.
They are simply made, and are replacing the old disks of 250 and 500 gigabytes with 320 and 640 GB respectively without a significant increase of cost.
Both of these capacities represent the bulk of their sales both in the trade and as OEMs.
One can expect that soon enough the discs 750 and 1 Go will follow the same path and will be replaced by products of 980 GB and 1.3 TB
Note that in contest for the most extensive capacity per platter, Samsung still holds the lead with 334 GB per platter, which allows them to offer the F1 with only 1 to 3 plateaus.
The disc manufacturer have rushed ahead to increase capacity. They are forced by competition between them to reduce prices (1 TB disk sells for around 200), but they must also make grea advances in order to delay the emergence of SSD drives.

AMD missteps result in 5% work force reduction?

Apple hat gestern Abend noch ein kombiniertes Time-Machine- und AirPort-Update veröffentlicht, das über die Softwareaktualisierung geladen werden kann. Dell denies lack of reliability with SSD drives

Apple updates Time Machine and Airport - Now working together!
Apple has now filled what was a gaping hole in their Time Machine backup ecosystem. You can now use Airport connected USB hard drives to backup your Leopard computers. Apple had promised this feature long ago but wasn't able to deliver during the first two releases of Leopard. While this might have been more difficult than originally planned, Apple has now released Airport and Time Machine updates that now allow you to see Airport connected USB drives and back up to them like Time Capsule drives.
It isn't known whether Apple waited to sell a few Time Capsules before releasing this fix or the company genuinely didn't have all of the pieces together. Anyway. Download and backup to your heart's content.

Adobe clarifies Flash for iPhone claim
Adobe has issued a statement to clarify claims the company is working to deliver Flash support for the iPhone.
Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen confirmed his company to be working to deliver Flash support on the iPhone during Adobe's Q1 financial conference call last night. This afternoon (US time), Adobe issued a statement of clarification - and it appears Apple will have to become involved in order to bring Flash support to the device.
"However, to bring the full capabilities of Flash to the iPhone Web-browsing experience, we do need to work with Apple beyond and above what is available through the SDK and the current license around it," the company said.
