Intel touts long-distance WiFi for rural areas
Filed under: WirelessWhile some companies are busy exploring other options for bringing wireless connectivity to rural areas, Intel's apparently been hard at work pushing plain old WiFi as far as they're able to, and they're reportedly now seeing some rather impressive results. According to Technology Review, the company's so-called "rural connectivity platform" (or RCP) is able to beam WiFi signals from one antenna to another located more than 60 miles away, and at data rates up to 6.5 megabits per second, no less. Hummer H3 converted into remote controlled vehicle

Resident engineer and all around madman Dr. James Brighton took a break from his rigorous teaching duties at Cranfield University and whipped up a RC Hummer H3 -- as in, the man converted an actual Hummer H3 into a remotely controlled toy. Amazingly, the conversion was completed in just a month, and it's reportedly able to "climb a 407-millimeter vertical wall, traverse a 40-percent side slope and operate in up to 610-millimeters of water."

700MHz auction comes to a $19.6B finish, winners still not revealed

Hear that? Yeah, that's the fat lady -- the 700MHz auction is over today, and the FCC netted $19.6B for the 1,099 licenses it put on the block. It's still not known who placed the winning $4.75B bid for the lucrative open-access 50-state C-block (probably Verizon) but hopefully we'll find out soon. Intel Unveils Part of its Roadmap
In a recent conference, Intel provides details about its future products:
- The Itanium, the very high end server CPU from Intel will be updated in H2 2008 and will reach 2 billions transistors, while featuring 4 cores and 30MB of cache. According to some rumours, Apple might be using it in some "high-end" Xserve models which could replace the Cluster Node models discontinued when the G5 CPU was dropped.
- Intel will release a 6 Cores-based CPU in H2 2008, named Dunnington, it will feature 1.9 billion transistors and 16MB of L3 cache.
- The Nehalem, aka the successor of the recently release Penryn, will be manufacture in Q4 2008. An 8MB shared cache will help communication between cores. Each core will sport a 64KB L1 cache as well as 256KB L2 cache. The Nehalem should be available as 2 to 8 cores-based CPU. Its cache will be faster than the current one in Penryn, and the Hyperthreading technology will enable 2 logical cores for each physical core.

The new 802.11n AirPort Express looks exactly like the 802.11g AirPort Express we've been using to stream iTunes and wirelessly print to an el-cheapo USB laser printer since 2004. In fact, if not for the different model numbers (A1264 now, instead of A1084) and the fact that our old unit has some random battle scars, we would have found it almost impossible to tell them apart. Apple stellt Safari 3.1 zum Download bereit
Apple hat heute Safari 3.1, den nach eigenen Angaben schnellsten Webbrowser für Mac und Windows-PCs, vorgestellt. Safari baut laut Apple Webseiten bis zu 1,9 mal so schnell wie der Internet Explorer 7 und bis zu 1,7 mal so schnell wie Firefox 2 auf. Die Unterstützung von JavaScript ist bis zu sechs mal schneller als bei anderen Browsern. Safari 3.1 ist der erste Browser, der die neuesten Webstandards unterstützt, die für die interaktiven Möglichkeiten der nächsten Generation von Web 2.0 Anwendungen nötig sind. Die Tests wurden mit VeriTests iBench Version 5.0 durchgeführt. Safari 3.1 steht ab heute zum kostenlosen Download unter www.apple.com/safari für Mac OS X und Windows zur Verfügung.

Iomega warming to revised EMC takeover bid

Now, however, it's singing a somewhat different tune as EMC has struck back with an entirely more succulent offer of $3.75 per share. Said bid puts a $205.5 million value on Iomega -- based on the 54.8 million shares it has outstanding -- and now it's being reported that "Iomega will enter into discussions with EMC that could lead to a definitive acquisition proposal." Die auf Suns OpenOffice basierende Mac-OS-X-Variante NeoOffice liegt nun in der Version 2.2.3 vor. Etliche neue Funktionen sind hinzugekommen, wie beispielsweise Unterstützung für Excel-Makros, QuickTime-Videos, Menüpunkte lassen sich wählen, auch wenn kein Dokument geöffnet ist und Befehl+Klick auf den Namen des Dokuments öffnet den Pfad, wie es auch in anderen Mac-Programmen der Fall ist.

Apple = 14% US PC February Retail Sales!?
Source : AppleinsiderAccording to a study conducted by NPD and dealing with US PC retail sales in February, Apple represented 14% of market share in unit numbers and 25% in value. Such an impressive increase (more than 5% more over the same period last year) is really impressive.
Another good news for Cupertino is provided by the figures of MacBook Air sales, as it did not cannibalize from the MacBook and MacBook Pro sales but directly targeted a more corporate and new to Mac users. So, all notebook models from Apple seems to have found their target market without disturbing each other. This is important considering that Apple just renewed its entry level and Pro-oriented notebook models at the end of February, so sale figures for notebook in March should be excellent.

AirPort Express günstiger - Musik drahtlos zur Anlage
Apples WLAN Basisstation AirPort Express ist nicht viel größer als ein Notebook-Netzteil und unterstützt ganz nebenbei noch AirTunes, die drahtlose Übertragung von Musik aus iTunes an eine mit der AirPort Express-Station verbundene Stereoanlage oder Aktivlautsprecher. iTunes ab Version 4.6 erkennt die angeschlossenen Lautsprecher automatisch, über ein Einblendmenü in der Fußleiste lässt sich dann statt den Computerlautsprechern auch ein an die entfernte WLAN-Station angeschlossenes Gerät für die Ausgabe auswählen.
Apple hat AirPort Express jetzt auf den schnelleren und von der Reichweite höheren Standard 802.11n aufgerüstet und gleichzeitig den Preis um 10 Euro auf 89 Euro gesenkt. Die Basisstation verkraftet bis zu zehn gleichzeitige Benutzer und unterstützt dank eines integrierten USB-Anschlusses auch das Drucken über WLAN mit kompatiblen Druckern.

Studie: Airlines sorgen sich um IT-Sicherheit
Fluglinien machen sich zunehmend um die Sicherheit ihrer IT-Systeme Sorgen. Das ist das Ergebnis der zweiten jährlichen Airline-IT-Security-Umfrage von SITA, einem der weltweit größten IT-Ausstatter von Airlines und Flughäfen. Im Rahmen der Studie wurden 152 Luftfahrtunternehmen befragt. Rund 83 Prozent von ihnen erklärten, im Jahr 2007 durch IT-Attacken unter Zugzwang gesetzt worden zu sein. Im Jahr 2006 belief sich diese Zahl noch auf 80 Prozent.

Apple Stores bald auch in Frankreich?

NASA tauscht iPod-Akkus
Wie wir wissen, gehören iPods inzwischen fast schon zur Standardausstattung eines Space Shuttle. Was wir nicht wussten: Die NASA lässt iPods nur mitfliegen, wenn der von Apple verbaute LI-Akku durch Alkali-Batterien ersetzt wird. LI-Akkus sind für Space Shuttle-Flüge (noch) nicht zertifiziert.
Parties in der internationalen Raumstation dürfen allerdings nicht mit iPods beschallt werden, wenn ein Space Shuttle dort andockt: Für den Betrieb in der Raumstation fehlt bislang noch die Zulassung, von daher darf der iPod beim Gang durch die Schleuse nicht mitgenommen werden.

Siemens-Aktie stürzt nach Gewinnwarnung ab
Siemens hat seine Gewinnerwartung für das laufende Geschäftsjahr gesenkt. EMC to release new version of Retrospect for Macintosh as Universal Binary
EMC (formerly Dantz) Retrospect is a serious, industrial-strength backup solution, that I have been using at work for quite a while, for backing up a mix of PCs and Macs.
Problem is, the Mac version has been languishing for literally years: the Mac version is 6.1 and has been in the 6.x range since at least 2005, while the PC version is up to 7.5, which brought massive changes, like proactive backups (basically, your computer gets backed up out-of-schedule, as soon as it is connected to your network, really handy for marauding laptops).
Well, now it seems EMC has decided to revive its Mac offering, and they are currently developing Retrospect X (someone tells them that the X suffix is soooooo Panther), which, amongst other features will bring this:

Apple Store in France; Apple prepares a giant coup?
For ages we have been talking about the eventual opening of Apple Stores in France.
Several different sources have told us that Apple is preparing a massive coup. They want to open simultaneously (or almost) several boutiques in France. Certainly these will be situated in the large towns, and we do not know more. They say that there will be even 3 stores in Paris.
Of course, there is much talk about the site occupied by Planet Hollywood on the Champs Elysées (number 78) which will soon be free.
There is a surface of 1000 M2 essentially underground. It has everything going for it, a shared entrance on the ground floor and all the essentials underground.
The idea to want to open several shops very quickly is not absurd. Indeed,FNAC does not look at this Apple store in a good light, the arrival of the Apple Store will lose them customers. It is said that they could reconsider whether to market Mac. To open many Apple stores at once would decrease the impact.
