T-Mobiles stiefmütterlicher Umgang mit 16 GB iPhone
Bodo Wartke könnte seinen "Brief an Steve" glatt um ein paar Zeilen ergänzen: T-Mobile verkauft das iPhone mit 16 GB derzeit nur per Telefon. New Article: Replacing a disk in a Time Capsule
When we ordered a Time Capsule, we chose the 500 GB model, since this was sufficient and also less expensive than the 1 TB. However we had in mind that as the price of large disks came down, we would one day change the disk for a larger one.
This day came early since the hard disk in our 500 MB was unacceptably noisy. We replaced the noisy Seagate 500 MB hard disk with a much more discrete Western Digital 1 TB Green Power disk.

Who will stop Intel?
After the difficult Pentium 4 era, Intel has experienced a renaissance with the Core processor architecture, an era which corresponds to the migration of Apple to their architectures. Since Core, the company has rolled all over the competition. Transmeta threw in the towel, AMD keeps posting losses, and VIA now fears its processors will be subject to competition from Intel's ultra-low-power platform, ATOM. While this competition causes a problem of staying afloat and not losing a fortune by selling its processors at a loss, Intel continues its forced march towards innovation. In two years, they have rapidly decreased their engraving from 90nm to 65 and are now manufacturing at 45nm, meanwhile AMD has not even begun to produce mass qualitities of processors this size. Negroponte says role at OLPC not changing, Windows coming soon

A Mac mini-like for less than 200USD
Surfing on the success of its Eee PC, Asus decided to apply the same concept for desktop.
The unit will be powered by single or dual core CPU clocked at 1.87GHz and will be using a 2.5" HD. The entry-level model will have a price tag below 200USD. Most of the hardware will be based on Intel solution (CPU, but also shared memory graphic unit, etc.).
On Apple's side, the Mac mini is still available on the Store, probably because it is still selling well, despite the fact it did not evolve in parallel to others hardware models currently available on the Apple Store. Some rumors keep spreading about the mac mini being a model designed and manufactured to make some share holders happy with an Apple-branded entry-level computer model; but margins are probably much more interesting for Cupertino with macBook, iMac or even the Apple TV.

Buffalo on Monday slipped out a 500GB version of the MiniStation TurboUSB, its faster series of pocket USB drives. Microsoft's Ray Ozzie talks about relevance of desktop and more
Microsoft Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie isn't normally one to give interviews, but the man himself did find a bit of time recently to chat with Om Malick of GigaOM, where he talked about the economics of cloud computing and the relevance of the desktop, among a myriad of other topics. Ericsson exec sees WiFi hotspots becoming the new telephone booths

Speaking at a conference in Stockholm, Bergendahl said that "hot spots at places like Starbucks are becoming the telephone boxes of the broadband era," and that "in a few years, [HSPA] will be as common as Wi-Fi is today." Intel sieht rosige Zukunft für Billig-PCs
Intel hat das Ende des Nischendaseins für Mobile Internet Devices (MID) proklamiert und erwartet bis zu 50 Millionen verkaufte Geräte bis zum Jahr 2011. iTunes: 600 Millions USD for The Beatles?
Source : TGDailyAfter years of legal battles, Paul McCartney could have agreed on a contract allowing iTunes Store to offer all Beatless song catalog.
To obtain such exclusive partnership, Apple might have signed a big check: 600 millions USD, without counting the revenues generated by future cong/album sales.

We've seen antiquated Macs given new life as fish tanks and living room decorations, but the iWipe takes repurposing to an entirely different level. As you can clearly see in the image above, one particular engineering soul figured a spare Macintosh SE case would look a whole lot better in his bathroom than in the trash, so he whipped out a screwdriver, removed some internal brackets and gave the unit a fresh coat of paint. $15 and a few hours later, out popped his new toilet paper dispenser.

Towards a 4 Cores iMac?
Source : vr-zoneIntel will release for Q3 2008 its first Quad Core CPU dedicated to the portable computer. The Core 2 Extreme QX9300 will be clocked at 2.53GHz and feature a 1066MHz FSB and 12MB of cache L3 in total.
The predicted TDP will be higher than the usual 20-25W, and could reach 45W. If it is for sure too much for a true notebook, it might well fit in an iMac, or in those Alienware-type of PC models.
For the iMac it will for sure remain a BTO as the price of this CPU/unit is 1038USD (public price /unit for 1000 unit order).

QuickTime 7.4.1 verursacht Flash-Probleme

Java kommt aufs iPhone
Sun will Java auf das iPhone bringen und dieses wohl im Sommer 2008 anbieten. Mit einer entsprechenden Java Virtual Machine (JVM) lassen sich dann auch endlich Java-Applikationen auf dem iPhone nutzen. Gnome-Gründer kritisiert Novell
Als Microsoft und Novell im November 2006 ihre Zusammenarbeit bekanntgaben, hagelte es auch Kritik aus den Reihen des Linux-Anbieters selbst. Brennerstudie: Rückgang von illegalen Musikdownloads
Nach einer bislang unveröffentlichten Studie im Auftrag des Bundesverbandes Musikindustrie laden die Deutschen weniger häufig illegal Musik aus dem Internet herunter als im Jahr zuvor. Der Studie zufolge sollen im vergangenen Jahr 312 Millionen Songs unrechtmäßig heruntergeladen worden sein - 2006 waren es noch 374 Millionen Titel. Den leichten Rückgang nimmt die Musikindustrie zum Anlass, ihre repressiven Maßnahmen zu verteidigen. In Zukunft will man die Provider mehr in die Verantwortung nehmen. (Musik)

GEAR4 Duo: Der Woofer bleibt zu Hause
Mit zunehmender Konkurrenz machen sich die Hersteller offensichtlich auch mehr Gedanken, wenn sie neues Zubehör für iPods oder das iPhone auf den Markt werfen. Was haben wir uns gefreut, als im letzten Jahr Altec Lansing mit dem iM 600 endlich ein portables Soundsystem mit integriertem Akku auf den Markt gebracht hat.
GEAR4 will mit dem Lautsprechersystem Duo noch einen Schritt weiter gehen: Zu Hause sorgt ein kräftiger, aber auch entsprechend voluminöser Subwoofer für ordentlich Wumms, für unterwegs lässt sich die nur wenige Zentimeter dünne Frontplatte dann abnehmen und man hat trotzdem alles nötige dabei: Einen (jetzt nicht mehr ganz so druckvollen) Lautsprecher mit ausklappbarem iPod-Dock und integriertem Akku. Congstar-Flatrate: Preisspirale abwärts durch Konkurrenz

MSI intros the Eee-ish Wind PC

Apparently MSI is gearing up to release its own Eee competitor, tentatively called the Wind PC. There's not a lot known about the system (which was shown at CeBIT), though it's slated to feature an 8- or 10-inch, 1024 x 768 display, utilize Intel's Atom CPU, will make 2.5-inch hard drive and SSD options available for storage, and will come with 1GB of RAM standard.
