AIM for iPhone
During Apple's iPhone SDK demonstration, AOL announced AIM for the iPhone. It allows multiple concurrent chats on the phone, but does not include support for video or audio, of course.
It is strange that this software will be announced prior to a potential iChat. Apple is witholding, perhaps, for a 3G-enabled iPhone capable of supporting video. Perhaps.

Apple introduces its iPhone SDK [Update]
After congratulating the 1000 Web applications created for the iPhone, Scott Forestall detailed the new (official) iPhone SDK to create native applications for the device.
-- It is the same as that used by Apple to develop in-house applications.
-- The same API and tools that are available to Apple are also available to developers.

iPhone SDK details revealed at Apple Event
So Apple has finally lifted the curtain on the long-awaited iPhone SDK.
Here is a quick rundown of the main features:
the SDK is basically Xcode, with special stuff for the iPhone
there will be a $99 fee for developper, who will receive an authentication key
the developpers choose the price of their apps, and keep 70% of the revenue (no credit card charges, no hosting fees)
developpers can choose to release their app for free at no charge on Apple's side
the apps will work on the iPhone and iPod touch
the apps will be distributed via the AppStore, accessible on the iPhone or in iTunes
apps updates will be automatically distributed through the AppStore
demos of apps (developped in a week or two) were shown: a motion-sensitive space shooter, EA's Spore (!), a medical app

Werkzeuge für Entwickler
Softwareentwickler erhalten genau die gleichen Werkzeuge zur Programmentwicklung wie sie Apple selbst nutzt und dürften sich zumindest teilweise wie zu Hause fühlen: viele APIs und Teile der verwendeten Frameworks ähneln denen des "großen" OS X. Das Interface der Programme lässt sich einfach per Drag'n'Drop zusammenbasteln. Mit der Veröffentlichung der diesjährigen Forbes-Liste der reichsten Menschen der Welt hat sich einiges geändert. Nicht nur verlor Bill Gates nach 13 Jahren den Titel des reichsten Manns der Welt, sondern auch der Apple-Geschäftsführer musste ein paar Millionen abgeben. If the HD-DVD format is officially abandoned, it will survive in China via CH-DVD. This format developed in China is indeed very similar, enough-so to be endorsed by the DVD Forum. It was originally created by Chinese manufacturers that did not want to have to pay royalties to foreign companies. This format, however, will never see the light of day beyond China, due to the lack of Hollywood backing.
Meanwhile, Toshiba does not seem to have digested his defeat. The company announced that it would focus on the still-thriving DVD market (it will remain the majority market for many years), and also invest in downloadable movie technology. On this point they align with Apple's hopes to surpass sales of physical media.

This one's been swirling around for a tick, but Leviathan Energy's brilliant new turbine is just too good to pass up. Showcased at the Cleantech Forum in California, this contraption would reportedly generate power from the downward movement of water through pipes in a municipal system. iPhone Clone Banned by CeBIT [Update]

Today in Hanover is the largest computer exhibition in the world, CeBIT. On this occasion, the Meizu company has debuted its iPhone clone about which we have already spoken.
The German police, certainly alerted by Apple, have raided their booth and seized all the goods, and after having been asked, closed their stand.
This is certainly a relief for Apple: the device is almost identical to the iPhone, but has 3G and a better camera.
[Update] According Meizu, the problem was not related to this clone, but to another device and a license problem, probably involving the MP3 format.

Photoshop, Leopard and Plug-ins...
Photoshop and Leopard do not mix, especially if you have an Intel-based Mac. Either you are using a version earlier than CS3 and it is no longer compatible (or no longer supported by Adobe), or you upgraded to CS3 and most of your old plug-ins do not work anymore (apart from a few plug-ins maintained by their respective publishers). If you have this plug-in problem, for example, and you can no longer use the TWAIN plug-in for your scanner, or KPT effects, you should know that there is a solution, published by Adobe on their database.
Just check the "Open with Rosetta" box in Photoshop CS3's "Get Info" window to restore use of most of the former plug-ins, including those not written for PowerPC. The loss of speed is negligible (aside from the application's load time) as long as you do not work on images of very large size.

G10IL, the Eee PC killer from ECS, is actually killer

Perhaps the ECS G10IL could use some help in the naming department, but it certainly isn't having any trouble bringing a bit of class to the subnotebook market. In addition to those stylish good looks, the G10IL sports a webcam, HSDPA 7.2, three USB ports, Ethernet and a 56Kb modem (joy of joys!). No mention is made of WiFi or Bluetooth, but at least the former seems a given. Other details are slim, but the price is supposedly "sub-$500." Perhaps this "race to the bottom" won't be so horrible after all.

Some users have immediately tried to flash a PC GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, and apparently with success according to a report from Macrumors forum. However, it seems that the card does not work anymore when running windows on the same computer.
Before going further, let's see the difference between a GeForce 8800 GT and a GeForce 8800 GTS. Based on specifications, the GF 8000 GT and GTS featuring 512MB of VRAM are very similar. They have the same architecture, the same memory bus; however the GTS model is faster.

Open Moko stellt Handy-Gehäuse unter offene Lizenz
Das Projekt Open Moko hat die Gehäusespezifikation des von ihm entwickelten Handys unter eine Open-Source-Lizenz gestellt. Die CAD-Dateien zum Gehäuse-Design der Mobiltelefonreihe "Neo" wurden unter einer "Creative Commons Share Alike"-Lizenz veröffentlicht. Damit kann jeder neben der Linux-Software auch das Design der Open-Moko-Geräte einsehen und modifizieren.

Update for Radeon 2600 in the Mac Pro is on its way
A reader from XLR8yourmac reported that Apple will soon release an update for the Radeon 2600 XT in the 2008 Mac Pro.
He says he's got information that Apple has asked him to test these new ROM version for the card, which should fix the freezing problems reported by many users from this configuration.
The update should come available soon, when the final tests will be passed.

Samsung has teamed-up with Adidas in a direct assault on the Apple and Nike Nike+ partnership.
Samsung this morning announced its new initiative in partnership with Nike competitor, Adidas.The two firms have teamed-up to introduce a new product, the miCoach phone, which they are calling the "first true sports music mobile" and which will be available across Europe from mid-March.
Just like the Nike+ system, miCoach collects and analyzes personal data and then customizes training plans based on a user's fitness level and specific goals, while offering real-time feedback during a workout using the phone.
The device offers a stride sensor and heart rate monitor, offering training tips and time updates, all to a musical accompaniment that's tailored to the workout.

Auf dem Mobile World Congress in Barcelona wurde kürzlich ein modulares Handy-Konzept vorgestellt, auf der CeBIT in Hannover folgte nun die Präsentation eines Navigationsgeräts als Baukastensatz. Das Goto der Schweizer Firma Navisend liefert ein Grundsystem mit Routen- und Navigationsfunktionen zu einem Preis von 100,- Euro. Microsoft Surface going spherical?

According to ZDNET's sources, Microsoft has a "spherical Surface prototype" bouncing around the Redmond campus. What's intriguing is how they managed to stuff a rear projection unit and IR cameras into a ball. S3 Chrome 430 GT zielt auf Radeon 3450 ab
Zur Vorstellung der neuen S3-Chrome-400-Serie legte S3 Graphics zwar eine Menge technische Daten und Multimediaeigenschaften auf den Tisch, schwieg sich über die Taktraten und die Anzahl der Recheneinheiten aber aus. Nicht einmal eine grobe Einschätzung der Geschwindigkeit wurde heraus gegeben.

New iPhone applications appear tonight
We're just hours away from Apple's bells-and-whistles meeting where it will reveal the real deal on iPhone application development, and new information's beginning to trickle through.
Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's chief financial officer, last night told those at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference that the company will talk about the iPhone in the enterprise.
Oppenheimer also noted that the frequency of iPhone unlocking reflects demand for the device, and echoed chief operating officer Tim Cook's comments last week in which Apple revealed it isn't "wedded" to its existing revenue-sharing deal with mobile operators.
"We're off to a great start, but we're learning and we're not wedded to any one particular way to go to market. Our objective is to drive scale and take market share," said Oppenheimer.

Robotic Falco bird frightens away its own kind

Vor rund elf Monaten hat Dave Perry die Entwicklung von Project Top Secret gestartet, ein von Usern designtes Massively Multiplayer Online Game. Von rund 62.000 angemeldeten Usern arbeiten laut Perry gut 500 tatsächlich daran mit, das Spieldesign inklusive erster 2D- und 3D-Modelle zu erstellen. Bereits früh wurde durch den User-Input aus einem normalen Rennspiel ein MMOG-Konzept mit Fantasy-Reitern, Monsterzüchtung und extrem abwechslungsreichen Kursen. Asus Xonar erhält EAX 5.0
So rosig unser Fazit im Test der Xonar D2 auch ausgefallen ist, für Spielernaturen konnten wir die Soundkarte aus dem Hause Asus nur bedingt empfehlen. Zum einen lieferte die Karte in Spielen eine im Schnitt neun Prozent niedrigere Leistung, zum Anderen war das Ende der EAX-Unterstützung bei Version 2.0 erreicht.

CeBIT: Bund fordert 99 Prozent Breitbandabdeckung
Bernd Pfaffenbach, Staatssekretär im Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWI) hat gestern anlässlich einer Podiumsdiskussion der Deutschen Breitbandinitiative auf der CeBIT in Hannover eine höhere Breitbandabdeckung gefordert. Um die vor allem im ländlichen Raum immer noch vorzufindenden Breitbandlücken zu schließen, sei eine gezielte gemeinsame Kraftanstrengung von Bund, Ländern, Kommunen und Wirtschaft vonnöten. Die Bundesregierung habe hierzu bereits ein Bündel von Maßnahmen auf den Weg gebracht und werde ihre Anstrengungen zur Beseitigung von Anbindungsschwachstellen künftig weiter intensivieren.

iPhone - keine Flash-Unterstützung in Sicht
Seitdem das iPhone auf dem Markt ist, hoffen Käufer, dass Apple das Gerät um Flash-Unterstützung nachrüstet. Erst damit lassen sich Flash-Inhalte und damit auch viele Videos im Browser auch mit dem iPhone nutzen. Padded lampposts for distracted texters being tested in London

According to a recent report, human beings are becoming so incredibly stupid that they require cushioned lamppost bases so that when they run into them they don't mess up their idiotic faces. Apparently, a study in the UK found that one in ten people actually managed to hurt themselves by walking into a post while peering down at their mobile phone screen. The mishaps -- called "walking and texting" injuries -- have spurred the charity Living Streets to launch the padded-post-pilot scheme in Brick Lane, London. Google betreibt nicht nur seine Suchmaschine nebst Webapplikationen und anderen Projekten, sondern investiert auch kräftig in die Forschung. GPS-Jacke für Skifahrer vorgestellt
Auf der CeBIT 2008 zeigt der Navigationsgerätehersteller MyGuide eine Jacke mit integriertem Navigationssystem speziell für Skifahrer. Die GPS-Einheit ist im rechten Ärmel integriert, im Kragen befindet sich ein Lautsprecher, der die Routenanweisungen ausgibt. Zusätzlich zeigt ein LED-Feld auf dem Ärmel den Weg per Pfeil an. Auf der MIX 2008 in Las Vegas hat das neuseeländische Unternehmen Intergen TextGlow vorgestellt, eine Webapplikation auf Basis von Silverlight, um Word-2007-Dokumente anzeigen zu können. Apple holt achtmal iF-Design-Award
Seit zwei Tagen ist die CeBIT auch in diesem Jahr wieder in vollem Gange. Wie in jedem Jahr können sich Interessierte zu den neuesten Entwicklungen in der Unterhaltungs- und IT-Branche informieren. Auf der Veranstaltung sind zudem einige der gestern mit dem "iF product design award 2008" ausgezeichneten Produkte zu sehen. Mac OS X 10.4 soll weiteres Update erhalten
Viele dachten eigentlich mit dem Erscheinen von Mac OS X 10.5 sei die Weiterentwicklung von Tiger beendet. Kurz nachdem Start von Leopard erschien mit 10.4.11 dann jedoch eine weitere Aktualisierung des Vorgängers. Laut Macenstein arbeitet Apple auch ein paar Monate nach dem Start von Leopard an einem weiteren Tiger-Update, dass auf die Bezeichnung 10.4.12 hört.

Neue Firmware für iPod shuffle 2G

LG zeigt UMPC-Prototyp auf Basis von „Atom“

InterDigital posts earnings call, talks 3G and Apple
King of Prussia based InterDigital this week posted its earnings call to the web and had some semi-interesting things to say about Apple and 3G technologies.
Remember InterDigital signed a 7 year, $56 million agreement to supply technology licenses to Apple in September.
"The deal covers various 2G and 3G cellular technologies encompassing bandwidth allocation, roaming and power efficiency controls, and most likely also includes some type of packet data coding and delivery,"

Acer: Eee PC killer on track for Q2/Q3

We received confirmation from Stefan Engel, Managing Director and Country Manager for Acer Germany, that they were on target for a Q2/Q3 release.
