DARPA sets sights on aircraft capable of five-year flight

DARPA's certainly not lacking for ambitious projects these days, but it looks like it's about to get another big one underway nonetheless, with it reportedly now close to awarding contracts for its Vulture program, which aims to build an unmanned aircraft capable of a non-stop five-year flight. As if that feat wasn't enough, the aircraft will also have to be able to carry a 1,000 pound payload, pump out 5kW of onboard power, and keep up enough speed to withstand the winds it'll encounter at 60,000 to 90,000 feet. Meizu's CeBIT booth shut down over MP3 licensing issues, not the M8

InterDigital posts earnings call, talks 3G and Apple
King of Prussia based InterDigital this week posted its earnings call to the web and had some interesting things to say about Apple and 3G technologies.
Remember InterDigital signed a 7 year, $56 million agreement to supply technology licenses to Apple in September.
"The deal covers various 2G and 3G cellular technologies encompassing bandwidth allocation, roaming and power efficiency controls, and most likely also includes some type of packet data coding and delivery,"

If you'll recall, Microsoft announced that it was teaming up with SanDisk last May to conjure up a suitable U3 replacement. Not quite a year later, we're starting to hear the first whispers of what that replacement may be. Steve answers shareholders' questions
Source : Apple InsiderApple has held its annual shareholder meeting yesterday, and Steve Jobs was present to answer to some questions of the audience. The amount of answers was unusual high this year, here are some remarkable notes of interest:
- When questionned about the future of videogaming on the Mac, Steve referred to EA's Windows games being ported via Cider (which does not offer many games yet). He also referred to World of Warcraft, and the iPhone SDK, an SDK that will also allow developers to create games for the iPhone.

Pioneer wants to get out of the Plasma screen market
Pioneer has been a pioneer of the Plasma technology and holds a number of patents which were valuable and allowed them to make the best screens. However economic realities change the picture; the price of screens has fallen very quickly and the LCD continue to eat into market of screens.
The company must shortly announce the closure of its factories. It will, in future, buy screens from Matsushita and later, will market televisions with LCD screens bought from Sharp

Berufsgeheimnisträger verlangen Schutz vor Schnüffelstaat
Das Bundesverfassungsgericht hatte in seinem Urteil vom 27. Februar 2008 dem Gesetzgeber strikte Regeln für Onlinedurchsuchungen auferlegt. Zu deren Einhaltung drängt nun der Deutsche Anwaltverein (DAV), der befürchtet, dass diese im geplanten BKA-Gesetz nicht ausreichend gewürdigt werden. Apple will introduce mobile Internet devices later this year based on the newly christened Intel Atom processors.
This follows Intel's announcement of its new generation of small processors designed specifically for such devices, the Atom family (They're creepy and they're cooky). Warner, iTunes and DRM-free music plan (updated)
Warner Music plans to invigorate its deals with European online music stores, extending DRM-free downloads to additional store fronts in an emulation of its existing deal with Amazon in the US.
While the truth's murky, industry sources warn that a "major announcement" involving Warner Music's plans to offer DRM-free downloads in Europe is likely to emerge early this week, perhaps Tuesday.
That the music label seems set to reveal its plans on Apple's traditional Tuesday news refresh date suggests that Warner may introduce DRM-free downloads through the iTunes Plus service.
However, such speculation carries risk: Warner has deliberately only permitted DRM-free downloads through Amazon in the US, reflecting major label attempts to promote online music services alternative to iTunes.

MacBook Air is a speedburner?
Who would've thunk it? Even with the 1.8 inch hard drive and supersmall processor, the MacBook Air swiftly kicked the backsides of the three closest competitors in C|Net's Lenovo ThinkPad X300 review. In the tests, the Lenovo Thinkpad X300 with 1.2 Ghz processor went up against the Apple MacBook Air (1.6GHz), Toshiba Portege R500-S5003(1.2GHz) and the HP Compaq 2710p(1.2GHz).
Lenovo smartly shipped their demo units with Windows XP. One has to wonder how horribly clunky this thing runs with Vista.

MacBook Air selling out means...?
One of the big news items today is that the MacBook Air is selling out at Apple Stores, at Best Buys and online. The natural tendancy of the Mac community is to be elated that the devices are selling out and hard to find.
Not to be party poopers, but there are two sides to the supply and demand model here, and no where in any of the reports does anyone do any investigation into parts shortages, logistics issues or other factors that would be holding Apple back from delivering its products to customers that want them. Might the old MacBooks be faster than the new ones?
The news no one at Apple wants to hear? The new entry level MacBook might be slower than the old one. According to Primate Labs Blog, that might be true. The low power Penryn, was more or less forced on Apple by Intel but does offer significant benefits in terms of power consumption and heat dispacement.
The real culprit, according to the blog (and common sense) is the lowering of the level 2 cache on the entry level Penryn processors from 4mb to 3mb. While the higher end processor also got 1Mb of level 2 cache lopped off, the processor speed makes up the difference.:

Remember when we reported on Myspace doing a deal with Amazon in the music area and you were like SFW? Well, the two more elite brands in music (iTunes) and social networking (Facebook) have now paired off for a new joint venture. We know, SFW.

Warner spurns iTunes, favours 7 Digital
In a major digital music announcement, Warner Music last night made its music available free of DRM in Europe - but not on iTunes. We reported on this possibility yesterday.
Warner and other major labels continue to drum up interest in legal digital music service other than iTunes in an attempt to boost their hand in convincing Apple to move away from its fixed price format for music.
This industry in-fighting has been good news for UK digital music service, 7 Digital, (www.7digital.com) which is now the first European service to offer Warner Music’s catalogue DRM-free through its stores in the UK, Ireland, Spain, France and Germany. Warner already offers DRM-free content to US audiences through Amazon’s MP3 store.

Meizu CeBIT booth shut down by German authorities

Remember how the folks at the Meizu booth swore up and down that the M8 Mini One wasn't that similar to the iPhone? Well apparently the Hanover police think otherwise. iPod verantwortlich für steigende Diebstahlrate?

Seagate Unveils a new High-Performance HDs
Source : SeagateSeagate announced a new series of High-Performance HDs. entitled Cheetah 15K.6, it will spins at 15,000rpm, while all models will feature 16MB of cache and offer up to 450GB of storage space. they will be available in SAS or fiber channel format.
Seagate claims that such HD could reach 160MB/s transfer speed, while requiring less power thanks to new optimization.

Intels neue Grafiktreiber für GM965 und G35 ist fast fertig
Wie Intel auf der CeBIT 2008 erläuterte, machen die seit Juni 2007 einer Runderneuerung unterzogenen Treiber für die integrierten Chipsätze gute Fortschritte. Foxconn's Extreme Overclocking setup is actually rather extreme

We've seen some overclockers go to pretty great lengths to keep those chips cool while they crank up the GHz, but Foxconn's demonstration at the company's CeBIT booth is really a sight to behold. They appear to be using copious amounts of liquid nitrogen, along with other black magicks, to boost a Core 2 Extreme processor almost past the 6GHz mark. GadgetsCNN has a pretty extensive profile on El Jobso -- the likes of which seem to appear almost monthly these days in the mainstream media publication of your choosing -- but one of the more interesting tidbits is that apparently he sat on his pancreatic cancer for nine friggin' months before seeking treatment back in 2004. Auf dem US-Bildungsmarkt feiert Apple mit den Notebooks große Erfolge - abseits von öffentlichkeitswirksamen Kooperation wie mit der Oklahoma Christian University, die ein Umtauschprogramm für alte PC-Notebooks angekündigt haben, kann sich auch das Gesamtergebnis sehen lassen. Automatische Pause für iTunes: Breakaway
Werden die Kopfhörer aus einem iPod herausgezogen, wird die Wiedergabe automatisch pausiert. Dieses Verhalten bringt Breakaway auch iTunes bei: Der aktuelle Song wird gestoppt, sobald der Kopfhörer ausgesteckt wird. Den gleichen Effekt hat die Stummschaltung der Audioausgabe. Wird die Lautstärke wieder hochgeregelt, oder Kopfhörer angeschlossen wird die Wiedergabe fortgesetzt.

Drei Flickr-Export-Plug-ins gibt es mittlerweile für iPhoto, eines davon, FlickrExport ist nun in einer öffentlichen Beta-Version 3.0 erhältlich. Version 3.0 bietet eine Auto-Vervollständigen-Funktion für Schlagwörter, Geotagging und eine bessere Verwaltung von Fotosets. Das chinesische iPhone kommt "irgendwann"
Der Newton-Nachfolger, der Mac mini mit Blu-ray-Laufwerk und das chinesische iPhone haben eines gemeinsam: den Zeitpunkt ihres Erscheinens. Dummerweise lautet dieser "irgendwann" und das irgendwann von Apple-COO Tim Cook bezieht sich lediglich auf das iPhone. Safari 3.1 macht Fortschritte
Viel bleibt nicht mehr übrig für kommende Dienstage, aber vielleicht erscheint die endgültige Version des bisher als Safari 3.1 getauften Updates des Webbrowsers. Eine öffentliche Betaversion ist für Mac OS X Tiger und Leopard, sowie Windows erschienen. Apples Update-Mantra gilt auch für diese Betaversion, bei der im Vergleich zur vorherigen Version Verbesserungen an der Leistung, Stabilität und Kompatibilität vorgenommen wurden.

Samsung intros Spinpoint MP2, reiterates plans for 256GB SSD in 2009

Vista copy protection cracked, totally, for real

They've finally, really done it. Your good friends in the hacking community have apparently come up with a solution to get you Vista -- should you want it -- activation free. According to a report, there's now a cracked, full version of Vista floating around that totally circumvents that cumbersome and costly activation process. Bungie to bring justice to Xbox 360 repair mishap

Qtrax says it now has deals with major labels, doesn't actually have deals

Man, Qtrax just can't stop lying about those label deals, can it? The company issued a press release over the weekend saying it has (finally) signed up with Sony / BMG, Universal, EMI and Warner, but Wired did a little bit of digging and found out that Qtrax isn't being exactly honest -- spokespeople from all four labels flatly denied that any deals were in place. Rock Band drum kit modded for beatbox control

The Rock Band drum kit continues to attract modders of all stripes, and we're loving the crazy directions people are taking it -- like this beatboxing kick drum mod from Kevin Child. It's a simple hack -- Kevin simply used a Thumper vocal-percussion mike to activate the pedal trigger -- but it's pretty sweet in action, responding to nearly any noise he makes. We'd love to see this thing filtered through a computer with the different pads assigned to various frequencies so you could straight up bust out like Rahzel in your living room, but we'll take what we can get for now.
