QuantumSphere speaks of homemade hydrogen
Filed under: Transportation
We'll be honest, we're not getting ourselves all riled up about this just yet -- after all, it's not like QuantumSphere is the first (nor the last) company to teeter on announcing a legitimate "solution" to ditching gasoline. Nevertheless, said startup has reportedly figured out a way to "make hydrogen at home from distilled water and ultimately bring the cost of hydrogen fuel cells in line with that of fossil fuels." More specifically, the ou

Dell US hints at bringing Penryn to M1530 -- what's the holdup?

Well, would you look at that? Oh wait, you can't -- because Dell just removed a teaser tagline from its USA webstore that totally gave away the impending release of a Penryn-based M1530. Earlier today, the "Select My Processor" page seen while building an M1530 showcased the following message: "Intel Core 2 Duo T7250, T7700, and T7800 require a selection of 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS as your video card. Intel Core 2 Duo T9300, T9500, and T8300 require a selection of 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT as your video card."

Though these applications won’t be available until late June or later, if at all, we’ve assembled a complete list of what was shown for curious readers and developers to consider. Some…

New iPhone design leaked on iTunes? Highly unlikely.

Knowing how rampant the Apple rumor community can get, we try not to stir the pot too feverishly, but iLounge has made a bizarre little discovery that we thought you might like to see. Apparently, it's already possible for iPhone / iPod touch developers to create pages in iTunes offering content to limited groups of users. While perusing these pages, they apparently stumbled upon the Education First Educational Tours page, where international travel tour registrants can download TourCast audio and video content. The Newton Virus spreads joy

Remember back in the old days, when men were men, dogs ran free, and computers were the size of small countries? It was a time when viruses weren't malicious, rather, they delivered cherry popsicles, unicorns, and nuclear joy-beams. Well, now you can return to a simple time of laughter and love thanks to the Newton Virus and related dongle, created by the design collective Troika. Instead of gnashing your files, spamming your address book, or giving you "The Finger" repeatedly, this virus engages just once, and creates a playful desktop mishap that will undoubtedly inspire the victim to hug the nearest person. As USA Today reports, the robot has been some ten years in the making (at a cost of $210 million), and is designed to handle many of the tasks that would otherwise be done by astronauts on spacewalks. Dual 500GB 2.5-inch hard drives were just never meant to be in this close of proximity. Oh, it has RAID 0 / RAID 1? We suppose those 1's and 0's will just have to suffer. The LinkStation Mini LS-WS includes an FTP server, DLNA and iTunes capability, can share a printer of USB and reads memory cards and other mass storage devices. "Dreambook" mod gives the Cloudbook GPS, flash storage

His "Dreambook" mod incorporates an internal four-port USB hub to add all sorts of fun stuff like GPS, Bluetooth and 4GB of flash storage. That would apparently be entirely done using software to plot out its course ahead of time, although we're sure it could also be rigged with a remote control to allow for a little freestyle spraying. No significant drop in the price of Blu-ray for at least a year
Source: CDR Info
Michael Langbehn, the spokesman of the Blu-ray group has indicated in an interview that he does not believe that the price of Blu-Ray player was the last obstacle to the mass adoption of this format, however their cost would decline significantly before the holiday season. He also indicates that we will not see real mass market adoption until drives are sold for under 300.
Stan Glasgow, CEO of Sony, had a fairly similar statement. They believed that we can hope to have players around 200 in the course of 2009.
It is most important that the number of manufacturers (and production) of blue laser diodes continues to grow strongly, enough-so to lower the still-too-high price for these components. If more manufacturers move into this market, it will create new competition to fill that which has disappeared with the death of the HD-DVD format.

Analysis: RIM's limited iPhone fight-back options
Research In Motion (RIM) isn't taking Apple's move into the enterprise market it dominates without a fight. The company has confirmed plans to push back with the introduction of social networking and entertainment features.
Right.
As part of the push, RIM has reached a deal with Black Eyed Peas' artist, Will.i.am, to make that artist's content and online community Dipdive available on the BlackBerry. RIM's in a fix. Apple's introduction of Exchange support means core Blackberry customers have a choice of devices, and with the iPhone offering extra value in terms of screen real estate, iPod and other sexy features, the Blackberry maker must struggle to preserve its market.
Two-thirds of RIM's 12 million Blackberry users are government or corporate clients. In order to widen its business and resist the Apple-driven iP

iPhone: Exchange? Great, but what about Google Apps?
As an IT Administrator that is happily "exchanging" my headache of Active Directory/ Exchange server knowledge in for a company that wants to move to Google Apps, I am surprised that Apple has forgot its best buddy, Google - at least for the time being.
The SDK announcement yesterday included no reference to Google Apps working on the iPhone. While I've been using IMAP to check my Google Apps Email for awhile now (at push-like 1 minute intervals), it is a bit of a pain to connect to the Calendar and Addressbook through the EDGE web interface. I would much prefer to use the native apps like Exchange now can. I also know that I can sync my desktop Calendar and Addressbook to Google Apps and sync it periodically with the iPhonebut this isn't really how I'd like to work - and the p

iPhone SDK: Comments and Analysis
As we have the iTunes Store for music and movies, the iPhone will have its own store named "AppStore". iPhone owners will be able to buy and/or download application directly from the handheld.
No doubt that the AppStore should generate substantial revenue for Apple, there will be no other way to obtain iPhone application. Apple will take care of everything, and will pay 70% back to the developers. For iPhone freeware, Apple will distribute them for free on the AppStore.
For developers, the iPhone and its SDK might well be the new heaven as the Palm was more than 10 years ago. John Doerr, from KPCB funds, claims to have already secured 100 millions USD to be invested support developers for creating iPhone applications. This will for sure have an impact on Apple shares, as well as the overall perception by the analysts of the iPhone SDK and its business model.
The iPhone SDK appears to be complete, in summary it is a revised Xcode, packed with iPhone-dedicated API, including the

Oppenheimer also noted that the frequency of iPhone unlocking reflects demand for the device, and echoed chief operating officer Tim Cook's comments last week in which Apple revealed it isn't "wedded" to its existing revenue-sharing deal with mobile operators.
"We're off to a great start, but we're learning and we're not wedded to any one particular way to go to market. Our objective is to drive scale and take market share," said Oppenheimer.

Apple Showcases Five New 3rd-Party Apps
Apple's Scott Forstall, VP of iPhone Software, took the opportunity of today's Roadmap Event to showcase five new third-party apps.
It has been said many times that the iPhone runs the very same OS X as can be found on the Macintosh, but today's demonstrations have proven that the power of the operating system is truly present within the handset. In addition to that, Apple flaunted the ease of bringing full-powered desktop-class applications to the iPhone using its XTools-based iPhone SDK.

Yes, Spore - the game which allows one to conquer the universe starting their existence as a measly single-cell organism - has been ported to the iPhone. It is allegedly somewhat stripped down, and performance was a little choppy, but it's still Spore! On top of that, development time was stated to be about two weeks. No matter how they're branded, however, they're
