More delay for the 8800 GT
The first Mac Pro with the 8800 GT arrived a week ago, but Apple is still delayed on deliveries of cards sold singly.

Centrino 2 this summer
According to Digitimes , Intel decided that its next platform for laptops, code named Montevina, provides enough innovation to be called Centrino 2.
It should be launched during the Computex exhibition to be held in Taipei from 3 to 7 June.
It will provide the following:
-- 1066 MHz Bus
-- News optimization of energy consumption
-- New integrated graphics chip, the X4500

Compatibility problems with Apple RAID and Samsung Spinpoint F1 ?
During the weekend, we completed testing of the RAID card on a new Apple Mac Pro. Hoping to get the best possible results, we used Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB disks, which have the best transfer rates today.
Against all odds, and for reasons that we have not yet identified, we encountered problems with speed.
In RAID 0, 4 discs, involving transfers of less than 30 MB, we obtained data rates of reading and writing over 320 Mb/s. But above 30 MB files, write speed collapsed and peaked at 100 Mb/s.
On the same test, conducted without the RAID card, the transfer speed is much higher, close to 600 Mb/s in both directions with files of less than 20 and up to 500 MB.
It is possible that these discs pose a compatibility problem with this card. We will check in the coming weeks.

Samsung shipping ultra-fast SATA II SSD drives in time for MacBook Pro rollout?
According to Macworld UK, Samsung is now shiping the fastest consumer SSD drives avalable to Dell. The 64Gb drives have a SATA II interface that can support data reading at speeds of 100M Bps (bytes per second) and writing at 80M Bps. That makes it 60 percent faster than SATA I drives of the same type and two to five times faster than conventional hard-disk drives, according to Samsung.

New solar cell cuts out the middle man, harvests hydrogen from water

Some Penn State researchers are taking a cue from nature and have built the first solar cell that can effectively split water to harvest the hydrogen. Toshiba stoppt HD DVD Produktion

It can't. Sony is worth over $45 Billion - about the same as Yahoo! which also isn't possible for Apple to purchase (and might make more sense).

Hack: Internet auf dem Apple TV
Früher als geplant gibt es Safari HD für Apple TV und damit die Möglichkeit, bequem vom Sofa aus auf dem Flachbild-TV zu surfen. Der Entwickler Brandon Holland hatte sich ursprünglich den 1. März zum Ziel gesetzt, offensichtlich lief es dann doch deutlich besser als geplant.
Ein paar Einschränkungen gibt es natürlich: Für die Installation ist ein gehacktes Apple TV Voraussetzung, wer mit Version 2 von Apples Set-Top-Box surfen will, muss die Aktualisierung unbedingt in Form eines Safe Update vornehmen. Und auch die Eingabe von URLs gestaltet sich mit der OnScreen-Tastatur des Apple TV nicht all zu komfortabel, um so erfreulicher daher, dass Brandon Holland ein Bookmark-Menü integriert hat.

Toshiba claims "no decision" on HD DVD strategy as desertions continue

Garmin advances its Mac compatability

As some of you know, Garmin has set up a page dedicated to their software for MacOSX since MWSF in January. At the same time a beta mac version of MapSource -- aka Bobcat -- was made public. Over the past month, two other beta's came out and corrected the errors of youth in the first version, and it now is really usable software. Garmin also stated that City Navigator 2008 (Europe and North America) will have mac format maps on DVD . At the moment, even though Bobcat is there, we (currently) go through a Windows converter for maps (a utility provided by Garmin).

POI Loader that allows loading of the points of interest in GPS is available and stable.

The future du PhysX according to NVidia
Feb 13 , NVidia purchased Ageia, the company that developed the PhysX, a rendering graphics engine (to model physics interactions) used in some games via an additional daughterboard.
NVidia has indicated what the future of PhysX will be. The daughter-cards will be abandoned. The physics engine will be managed in the future by some GeForce chips, perhaps the current 8800.
Bad news, however. It will be at least two cards (so nothing really changes) which will significantly push up the bill.
It is likely that in the future, the next generation of cards will have enough power to handle 3D renderings and physical interations at the same time.

Fruux macht .Mac-Konkurrenz
Hinter dem Namen Fruux verbirgt sich ein neuer Daten-Synchronisierungsdienst, der es unter anderem erlauben soll, Adressbücher mehrerer Personen untereinander zu vernetzen. Macprime.ch und Macnotes.de haben bereits an er Beta-Testphase teilgenommen und zeigten sich grundsätzlich sehr angetan von den Funktionen des neuen Dienstes. Laut Macnotes gehen die Entwickler davon aus, dass es auch nach Erscheinen der Vollversion ein kostenloses Basisangebot geben wird.

Toshiba shares surge ahead of HD DVD abandonment
While owners of new HD DVD gear might be miffed at Toshiba's plans to scrap their HD DVD format, investors are stoked. Laut derstandard.at wird Toshiba in den nächsten Tagen das HD-DVD-Format endgültig beerdigen. Wal-Mart, größter US-Einzelhändler, hatte letzte Woche schon bekannte gegeben, alle HD-DVDs aus dem Sortiment zu nehmen.

Amazon S3: Ausfall sorgt für Datenverlust
Ende vergangener Woche gab es bei Amazons Online-Speicher S3 einen etwa 2-stündigen Ausfall. Als Folge davon sollen zahlreiche Daten verloren gegangen sein. Die meisten Malware-verseuchten Websites sitzen in China
Auf mehr als drei Millionen URLs verteilt auf über 180.000 Websites droht Internetnutzern die automatische Installation von Malware, meldet Google, nachdem mehrere Milliarden URLs in den letzten 18 Monaten untersucht wurden. PacketVideo brings Mobile TV to any WiFi device

PacketVideo has a new receiver which can pump mobile TV over good ol' WiFi. PV claims the device will ultimately ship before the year is out in versions supporting over-the-air DVB-H and MediaFLO broadcasting as well as TDtv and WiMAX streaming. Although it's presumably compatible with any WiFi device, they specifically cite support for the the iPhone, N-Series Nokias and HTC devices while demonstrating the device with an iPod touch at Mobile World Congress. The 6.4 x 1.8 x 4-cm block is powered by a lithium-ion battery of unspecified capabilities. LeapFrog debuts Crammer Study and Sound player for students

LeapFrog is moving on up the chain, and hitting 3rd through 8th graders with a new study aid, the Crammer Study and Sound System. Crammer works basically as a replacement for those annoyingly handwritten index cards, allowing you to enter data for each side of virtual "cards" and run through them on the 2.5-inch grayscale screen. You can also download study aids for a myriad of subjects, or use the included language tools to automatically translate and pronounce words for study. The built-in music playback is pretty straightforward, and lets kids relax with some songs or listen while they study. Kurzweil predicts that machines will match man by 2029 -- bring it on

Famed technologist and futurist Ray Kurzweil is on the record about human-machine intelligence parity: it's going down by or before 2029, so be prepared to get digital on entirely new levels.
