Niveus pledges allegiance to Blu-ray, bids adieu to HD DVD

Not like it's any huge surprise or anything -- after all, the HD DVD deathwatch is already in full effect -- but Niveus has just informed us that due to "customer demand and format war influences," it will be adding support for Blu-ray and "ceasing production of HD DVD-based servers." Details emerge on Montalvo's Intel-challenging mystery processor

PS3 outsells Xbox 360 for first time, Blu-ray cited
Sony's PlayStation 3 successfully edged out the Xbox 360 in sales for the first time in January, new research data from The NPD Group says. China Mobile is reporting that they have 400,000 iPhones on their network. NOW!
If true, it means that China has almost, if not more, iPhones as Europe - though Europe (present company included) probably has a huge amount of unlocked iPhones as well. Frankly, we don't think unlocking is a problem as there is no alternative way to purchase in China.
However, if the market is already saturated when Apple goes into China this year, it might hurt sales. Our opinion, as always is that Apple needs to go away from the model of limiting the carrier choice and letting as many people as possible use these iPhones.

Tiny Code Revealing 1.1.4 firmware/SDK info
Tinycode, makers of applications and stability patches for the iPhone is displaying some pretty heady info on their webpage. Until recently, their fixes have been available via the Installer application.
[UPDATE:Tiny Code no longer produces fixes or applications for firmware 1.1.3.We can't say much, but we are working with Apple and with their SDK for the next firmware release and SDK applications and we shouldn't be missed for long. We will no longer update our Installer.app repo for legality reasons and you should see us soon on iTunes.
This isn't Exchange support or EA games but it is the first we've heard of an organization working with the SDK, if they are being truthful. Also their assertion that Applications will be distributed through iTunes.

Rene schickt uns interessante Neuigkeiten vom World Mobile Congress (MWC) in Barcelona:

Was mich sehr beeindruckt hat, war ein Prototyp der Firma Packet Video. Im Prinzip ist es ein (schicker) kleiner DVB-H (oder MediaFlo o.ä.) Receiver, der das Signal in Echtzeit in einen IPTV-Stream konvertiert und per Wlan und per integriertem HTTP-Server an beliebige (WLAN-fähige) Endgeräte in seiner Umgebung senden kann. Das funktionierte am Messestand erstaunlich gut und sah zudem richtig toll auf meinem iPhone aus d.h. Live-Fernsehen auf dem iPhone/iPod Touch ist prinzipiell mit dem Gerät möglich (vorausgesetzt natürlich, dass DVB-H im Sommer in Deutschland starten wird). Verfügbarkeit des Devices voraussichtlich 2. HJ 2008, Kosten wollten sie mir nicht sagen (aber vermutlich zwisch 80-150 EUR).

Bessere Grafikleistung dank Mac OS X 10.5.2
Lange mussten wir auf Mac OS X 10.5.2 warten, in der letzten Woche war es dann soweit. Viele Verbesserungen flossen in die aktuellste Version von Leopard mit hinein. Neben Veränderungen an der Oberfläche und dem Hinzufügen mancher Funktionen, sind auch neue Treiber im Update vorhanden. Die Grafikkartentreiber wurden mit 10.5.2 und dem nachgeschobenen "Graphics Update" auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Die Kollegen der amerikanischen Macworld testeten anhand des Mac Pro, ob die neuen Treiber auch Leistungssteigerungen zur Folge haben.

OK, Jailbreaking a 1.1.3 iPhone just got stupid easy
This is even easier than jailbreakme.com on 1.02 - 1.1.1. Basically follow these instructions:
If you don't have a 1.1.3 iPhone, upgrade to 1.1.3 using iTunes. If you do, skip to step 2
Download and unzip the new iJailbreak
Quit iTunes and run iJailbreak with your iPhone plugged in (in normal, not recovery mode)
Choose Jailbreak, then choose to either jailbreak it alone or also unlock for other sim cards.
Wait 2 minutes - grab a coffee, use the bathroom etc. Done!
If there are any issues, re-restore to 1.1.3 using iTu

iPhone modem tethering? Yes!
Yes, BoyGenius jumped the gun a little bit by saying that AT&T-Apple was endorsing USB modem tethering of the iPhone - they aren't and won't.
That doesn't mean you have to give up the dream, however. Bluetooth DUN Modem tethering has been available on the iPhone since July of last year - it was acually one of Nate True's first hacks. Check the video for more

Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt der "Managementkompass Wachstumstreiber Technologie" von Steria Mummert Consulting, der im Vorfeld der CeBIT 2008 erstellt wurde. In der ITK- und Medienbranche setzen sogar acht von zehn Unternehmen auf neue Technologien als Wachstumsmotor. KITT's scanner light gets explained

Der iPod gilt als der Walkman des neuen Jahrtausends. Was liegt da also näher, als dem Vorgänger aus den 1980ern zu huldigen, indem man ihn als Tasche für den iPod verwendet. Die Höhepunkte des Mobile World Congress 2008
Die Handybranche hat vier Tage lang ihre Neuheiten in Barcelona präsentiert. Zu den Höhepunkten zählen ein Handy mit ausrollbarem Display und ein modulares Handy-Konzept, bei dem sich die Telefoneinheit in so genannte Jackets stecken lässt, die das Handy zu einem Smartphone, Kameratelefon oder Modehandy machen. Kompakter USB-Hub für das MacBook Air
Es ist natürlich kein Hub speziell für das MacBook Air, aber der Targus Ultra Mini USB-Hub sollte sich gut für den Einsatz unterwegs eignen. Der Hub besitzt vier USB-2.0-Schnittstellen und benötigt kein Netzteil. Eine Alternative zu dem blau-transparenten Gehäuse gibt es nicht. Das Kabel lässt sich zum leichteren Transport leicht am Gehäuse befestigen. Treiber für den Mac benötigt der knapp 20 US-Dollar teure Hub nicht.

Vektormalprogramm mit neuer Farbraumunterstützung
Das Vektormalprogramm Zeus ist nun in Version 1.3 erhältlich und ermöglicht die Auswahl zwischen RGB und CMYK als Farbmodelle bei neu angelegten Dokumenten. Zeus kann Bilder in CMYK (TIFF und JPEG) und Graustufen-Bilder (TIFF, PNG und JPEG) exportieren. Einige Veränderungen im Programm haben es nötig gemacht, dass Zeus Daten in einem neuen Format (.zs2) schreibt. Ältere .zs-Daten werden noch eingelesen, dabei aber in das neue Format konvertiert. Über den Druckdialog unter Mac OS X können Daten nun auch als Vektor-PDF gesichert werden.

Inside a MacBook Air Superdrive
In order to know what inside the belly of the MacBook Air Superdrive, we decided to open it up. Nothing is easier, all one has to do is to insert a thin blade into the left or right side of the unit and lever it open.
Three screws later one can lift our the CD/DVD drive. Removing the two remaining screws releases the electronic card.
It is an Optiarc AD-5630A identical to that found on many iMacs. It has a thickness of 12.7 mm and there is no obvious difference from a standard unit.
The convertor ATA/USB is very thin and contains only a few components. However it is this that limits the use of this CD/DVD unit

Optisches Laufwerk mit 36 mm Kantenlänge fürs Handy
Das US-Unternehmen Vmedia hat auf dem Mobile World Congress in Barcelona ein kleines optisches Laufwerk für Handys vorgestellt. Politischer Radiomoderator beschwert sich über Fehler in Leopard
Laut war der Aufschrei zahlreicher Käufer des Leopard-Upgrades über mehrere Fehler in der neuen Systemversion; Hoffnung auf Linderung brachte alleine die Erwartung von Updates, die besagte Lücken schließen sollten. Modu CEO says all Nokia can do is pray

Coby MP-835 touchscreen PMP almost puts those horrible boomboxes out of mind

In what can only be seen as further evidence of Coby employing to totally different design teams for its PMPs and its fiery boombox product lines, the MP-835 doesn't look half bad.
