News: EU pushing for longer royalty windows
European Union Commissioner Charlie McCreevy has said that singers and musicians should earn royalty fees for a longer period of time. Looks like Panasonic's trying to get a two-month jump on NAB, holding a press conference last night to announce the AG-MHC150 prosumer HD camcorder. The 3CCD MHC150 is based on the popular DVX100 / DVX200 design, but ditches the tapes in favor of capturing AVCHD to SD. Images are captured through a optically stabilized 28mm Leica lens at up to 1080p/60 resolution, with audio coming through the built-in XLR jacks. The recent iPhone SIM-unlock is almost too simple
Yesterday, we tested the activation and SIM-unlockability of a new 16GB iPhone freshly landed in London.
We used iJailbreak 0.5.2.
Note that in order for this program to launch the jailbreak and SIM-unlock, it is necessary, before starting the operation, to launch iTunes, which will then be closed by the software. After that, it's more than simple. Never has it been so easy to achieve this result, which requires no intervention from the iPhone! Three minutes later, we had a unit that was activated and SIM-unlocked!
These new flaws are extremely easy (maybe too easy?) to exploit and will lead to the "resuscitation" of more iPhones than ever, at least until Apple reacts and fills vulnerabilities. We would like to remind you, however, that without unlimited Internet subscription, the iPhone loses much of its interest, having the fullness of its functions only when connected via Wi-Fi. MacBook Air's Superdrive is Restricted?
Apple is very clear on this subject. The Superdrive MacBook Air is not compatible with any other machine. We thought that this was related to a lack of power drawn from the USB ports of other Macs, and have decided to make some tests to be absolutely certain.
For this, we used a USB male-male extension cord; the second merely to collect current from a second port. Connected directly (with a single dose), the drive has been recognized as "MacBook Air Superdrive" on a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro, but did not start. We were surprised to see that the situation remained unchanged despite using a second connector to double the power available.
To be absolutely certain, we then connected the main connector (current + data) on a MacBook Pro and the second on a MacBook Air. If the problem was related to energy, this configuration would work. However, this was not the case. Again, the DVD-writer was seen, but inoperable.
It is limited to look only for the MacBook Air.

Self-reconfigurable Matrix-style camera array soon to be self-aware

We're pretty sure this camera setup won't be putting the Wachowski Brothers out of a job any time soon, but some folks at Carnegie Mellon slapped this Matrix-style rig together for a "mere" $22,000. The cameras are mounted on linear guides, making them self-reconfigurable, and each can shoot 640 x 480 video at 30 fps. Their purported aims are "Image-based rendering," creating 3D objects with little scene geometry info, but we're sure they're doing plenty of bullet time scenarios in their free time. iPhone als drahtloses Modem nutzbar, oder doch nicht?
Das iPhone ist noch lange nicht an seine Entwicklungsgrenzen gestoßen. Zwar sind die bisherigen Funktionen innovativ und weitestgehend benutzerfreundlich, wie von Apple gewohnt, doch Apple hat noch mehr mit dem Gerät vor. Dazu zählt nicht nur die mögliche Anbindung ans UMTS-Netz, auch GPS ist mittels WiFi schon möglich. Bald könnte das Mobiltelefon sogar auch als eine Art Modem zum Einsatz kommen. Mit einem an den Rechner drahtlos verbundenen iPhone ließe sich so im Internet über das Mobilfunknetz surfen.

Microsoft drums up its very own Xbox 360 shortage

The word on the street, nay, the word straight from Jeff Bell's mouth, is that the Xbox 360 is experiencing stock shortages, which could hurt sales for January and February. "You could say we misjudged demand," said Bell, head of global marketing for Microsoft games. "We're literally out of stock in many stores. We think this will have an impact on our sales." Völlig überraschend bestätigt die ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG, was schon seit einigen Wochen in Foren gemunkelt wird: Zum 16. Laut einer bei Seeking Alpha veröffentlichten Statistik wurden zwischen August 2007 und Januar 2008 in den USA mehr als eine Million Internet-Suchanfragen bezüglich Apple-Werbungen und den darin verwendeten Songs gestartet. Neuer Gesetzesentwurf zur Netz-Neutralität vorgeschlagen
Im amerikanischen Abgeordnetenhaus ist ein Gesetzesentwurf vorgestellt worden, der Netzbetreibern wie Comcast und AT&T künftig verbieten würde, bestimmte Internetinhalte bevorzugt zu behandeln. Der Gesetzesentwurf sieht vor, vier neue Breitbandregeln zu den bereits bestehenden Kommunikationsgesetzen hinzuzufügen. Anwender sollen demnach Zugang zu jeglichen Inhalten und Anwendungen bekommen – so lange diese rechtmäßig sind. Und sie dürften jegliche Geräte ans Internet anschließen, so lange diese das Netzwerk nicht behindern.

Sun Microsystems hat ein steigendes Interesse an seinem Sun Ray, einem Thin-Client-Desktop, vermeldet. Omitted functionality in 10.5.2
Even though the 10.5.2 update has fixed many problems, one of the functions that was announced with Leopard but is still not available is using an external disc connected to Airport Extreme N devices, for backups etc.
This functionality was still available in the 10.5 betas, but has been pulled out in the released version. In fact, it appears that the backups can become corrupt, without informing the user about it.
We can only hope now that a firmware update for the device will fix this important and practical functionality, especially for laptops. This might happen at the end of the month when Time Capsule is released, which is actually nothing more than an Airport base station with integrated HDD.

We're not entirely sure why he's retiring (when we met him last year he seemed sprightly enough), but he'll be replaced by Andrew Lees, VP of Server & Tools Marketing and Solutions Group, a man that's spent the last decade on MSDN and TechNet stuff. Nope, no AT&T iPhone tethering plan (yet)

So there's a rumor floating around the internets concerning AT&T, iPhones, and tethering. The story goes something like this: the word tether is mentioned in an AT&T notice about users upgrading to a new iPhone and being forced into another two-year agreement. Apparently, some folks who've only quickly browsed the document made the mistake of assuming that AT&T used the word "tether" the way we all know it best: computer-to-phone, modem-style tethering. Unfortunately, this is a semantic problem -- what AT&T's talking about is using the dock connector to activate the phone, and sync with your computer not the other way around. So next time you hear someone talk about AT&T's "tethering" plan feel free to set 'em straight.

OK, Jailbreaking a 1.1.3 iPhone just got stupid easy
This is even easier than jailbreakme.com on 1.02 - 1.1.1. Basically follow these instructions:
If you don't have a 1.1.3 iPhone, upgrade to 1.1.3 using iTunes. If you do, skip to step 2
Download and unzip the new iJailbreak
Quit iTunes and run iJailbreak with your iPhone plugged in (in normal, not recovery mode)
Choose Jailbreak, then choose to either jailbreak it alone or also unlock for other sim cards.
Wait 2 minutes - grab a coffee, use the bathroom etc. Done!
If there are any issues, re-restore to 1.1.3 using iTu

Texas Instruments almost set to ship Android dev platform

Mozilla veröffentlicht dritte Beta des Firefox 3
Etwas später als erwartet hat die Mozilla Foundation die dritte Beta des Firefox 3 zum Download angeboten. Verglichen mit der vorherigen Version enthält die Beta 3 etwa 1.300 Änderungen in den Bereichen Stabilität, Leistung, Speicherbedarf sowie einige Verbesserungen an der Plattform und Benutzeroberfläche.
