Guitar Rising perfects the "Guitar Hero with real guitars" genre
Filed under: Gaming
We've seen more than a few attempts to meld real guitars and Guitar Hero, but most of them involve wonky custom guitars -- or worse, retrofitting your existing guitar with a dorktastic MIDI pickup. Well, it looks like a company called GameTank has answered the bell with a game called Guitar Rising, which allows you to use any guitar to play. The PC game takes audio input basically any way it can get it -- direct audio in, microphone, or 1/4-inch-to-USB adapter -- and allows you to play along with a catalog of tunes at beginner to expert difficulties. GameTank says Guitar Rising will be

Consumers will be able to wear the patch at home, and hopefully a Lisa Frank version will be soon in the making.

Lenovo's tiny new laptop adapter brick plays nice with others
Filed under: Laptops, Peripherals
Lenovo seems to think this whole "brick" terminology for laptop power adapters is some sort of slight on the good name of AC/DC adaptation, and is releasing a slim new combo adapter to fight that negative stereotype perpetrated by a biased media. The new $119 90W brick measures a half-inch thick and is about the size of a deck of playing cards. It can power your ThinkPad, IdeaPad or Lenovo 3000, but is also built to charge most phones and PDAs, and some music players if you buy the optional connector tips.

Some "anti-fuel" expands the shape again, creating a sort of piston with all sorts of potential. The researchers are currently working to assemble larger structures using the tetrahedrons as building blocks. Possible applications of the technology range f

AT&T has announced that it wishes accelerate 3G's development during 2008. 80 new towns will be covered by the latest incarnation, HSUPA.

The Torments of Vista
Foreword: it would seems a rather delicate matter for a writer on a Mac site to speak about Windows without being accused of being a Troll - or to be without passion for not breaking out with a rash when given this task. However, it is impossible for a site that caters for fans, whether that is Apple or something else, to be unaware of competition - especially when it is as omnipresent as Microsoft.
We thus will cover the subject which follows, not with the maximum of objectivity, but at least with a minimum of subjectivity, and use facts to support our statements.
Microsoft has already sold more than 100 million licenses for Vista, this operating system (just like Leopard to a certain extent) has a lot of bad aspects due to its size, however of special concern is its ever present 'security alerts'.
In fact, many users are prudently returning to XP after an ill-fated incursion into the Vista world. The professionals are those that have the smallest urge to change syst

AT&T wins/buys 12Mhz of the 700Mhz spectrum

The proposition won by a 4-1 vote. One of the two democrats, Jonathan Adelstein, said he voted in favor of the Aloha sale because there was no public opposition to it but remained "troubled" that AT&T could hold a "disproportionate share of the spectrum" when the auction is finished. The other Democratic commissioner, Michael Copps, voted against the ruling. He said the deal could have a large impact on a mo

Towards the End of Cheap Broadband Internet?
With the development of the Web2.0, in other words online service such as YouTube or Dailymotion, as well as VOD or online Video Rental services, the internet bandwidth literally exploded. If one adds the effect of P2P (reported to drain about a third of the worldwide bandwidth), internet users keep increasing their bandwidth consumption.
However, if this could look like an unlimited resource, it starts to have a cost for ISP, especially when they have to use hardware infrastructure developed by competitors.
If in France and in general in Europe, the competition between ISP allows users to have access to full broadband internet at a very low price (triple play ADSL or ADSL2+ for less than 30 Euros/month), with transfer speed only defined by the distance between your computer and the central server, in other countries such services are simply not available yet. In USA, partially due to the size of the country and also to the investment required, broadband internet remains restricted to some

SanDisk: 43nm chips and 3 bits per cell
Source : DailytechSanDisk announced to have started producing new NAND Flash memory chips able to store 3 bits per cell while taking advantage of thinner engraving process at 43nm.
When used together, both technologies will allow SanDisk to double the storage capacity of their memory chips, while decreasing the price/unit. SanDisk plans to release 2GB chips for Q2 2008, while 4GB chips will be available later on.
Of course, SanDisk aims to use such chips for SSD, a juicy expanding market for flash memory manufacturers which have been suffering of low margin in 2007.
However, we do not know the performance level of such chips, as MLC memory able to store several bit/cell is usually slower than SLC memory only able to store a single bit/cell.

Apple employees in France don't have their iPhones yet
When the iPhone was announced, Steve jobs had said that each employee of the company would be offered one. Of course it was necessary that that the iPhone is officially proposed in the country where the employees live.
Even though this was very quickly regulated in the United States, the employees of Apple France are still waiting, although the iPhone has been available for a few months now. Soon they will be made happy. The telephones are already in stock on their premises. They only await the start of the pro offers of Orange (which are now available on their site iphone.orange.fr) to enroll to a specific subscription.
It is necessary to recognise this disordered state: the employees of Apple promoting an device that they do not use themselves.

Interview: XBox Media Center hits the Macintosh scene
The XBox Media Center (XBMC) project was started as an alternative OS for the original modded XBoxes in 2002. It has since grown into one of the most functional media center applications out there.
Last year it was ported to Linux and it was reborn as one of the best media centers for the platform, doing many things that Front Row/AppleTV and Windows Media center can't do.
Recently a team of programmers led by Elan Feingold decided that maybe an OSX version might have a market..as he puts it, "it seems like it's a confluence of people who like the best OS coupled with people who like the best media center". We had just a moment (we are in Paris, he is in Maui- not much overlap!) to catch up with Elan and ask him some questions about this very promising application.

Sony PSP sends kid to hospital with leg burns -- that'll teach him to play it in school
Filed under: Gaming, Handhelds
A Michigan Middle School student learned the hard way about bringing video games to school when his PSP battery overheated in his pocket during band practice, sending him to the hospital with leg burns. Apparently students are allowed to bring the systems to school as long as they don't play them during school hours -- a policy which we're sure the children follow to the letter. There's no word from Sony on the incident yet, or whether the kid was using a shady third party battery inside the system.[Thanks, Robin W; image courtesy of

Nintendo files Wii accessory patent for everything, includes the kitchen sink
Filed under: Gaming
Some folks in the UK happened upon a set of British patents submitted by Nintendo recently for a whole slew of crazy Wiimote accessories, and you might be surprised to know what the company wants dibs on. Included in this large collection of sometimes bizarre add-ons is a Wiimote-cradling teddy bear, skateboard, helmet (with goggles), golf club, baseball bat, and of course a bicycle.
