TerreStar nabs $300 million in funding, aims for satellite launch by end of year

SIP telephony for the iPhone from Free
Free has launched a small bomb which will not make Orange happy at all.
On a dedicated page (http://sip.free.fr/)they offer SIP software that can be installed on a jailbroken (unlocked) iPhone. It allows the user to call for free or at a very low price as long as the device is connected to Wi - Fi.
For the moment, the software is reserved for the iPhone and Free. Soon it will be open for everyone and all SIP programs and also the iPod SIP Touch as long as you add the microphone developed by TouchMods.

Dell confusingly "committed" to AMD

Officially unlocked iPhones in France - the reality
As France is currently the only country where Apple allows the iPhone to be sold without a contract and unlocked, I thought I would share my experience since purchasing an iPhone in November of last year.
Living in France and deciding I needed the unlimited data option, I opted to buy the iPhone with a contract, and then unlock it right away as I do travel on business to the UK quite often. First and foremost, Orange offer a 12 and 24 month contract - albeit for a few Euros more for 12 months (which is what I ended up going for). Incidentally, Orange recently introduced a business option for the iPhone which comes in at 339 and 29.90 per month for 24 months. The cost to unlock the iPhone came in at 100 as advertised.
The unlocking process involved a call to Orange customer services followed by a confirmation letter within 5 days. To summarise, Orange send the IMEI number of my iPhone to Apple which I assume is stored so that when my iPhone syncs with iTunes, it knows to "unlock"

Military-grade gel-based liquid bandages approved by the FDA

Apple will not be at NAB
Last year, Apple had a big presence at the NAB Show, (National Association of Broadcasters) and they even gave a keynote. Two months before the opening NAB 2008, Apple has withdrawn to the irritation of the organizers, who already announced to have resold the released space.
According to Apple, there are better (and certainly less expensive) ways to meet their users, and they still hope to reduce their presence at many of these shows/expos this year. They cite the Apple Stores, that now have sufficient density in the United States, and also their Web site.
This decision, and the way in which it was taken, almost at the last moment, does not surprise us; this mode of operation is traditional for them.
It is even a speciality for them to let their presence grow with the organizers for the longest possible time, in order to build a false bond. They have already done this in the past with the MacWorld Exp

Namco blames Wii for arcade closures in Japan

Namco Bandai is shuttering between 50 and 60 arcades in Japan, and it's laying the blame squarely on Nintendo's shoulders. "A lot of the types of games that people played at an arcade can now be done at home," said company spokesman Yuji Machida. Microsoft übernimmt 3D-Spezialisten Caligari
Microsoft hat Caligari gekauft, den Hersteller des 3D-Modeling- und Animationsprogramms Truespace. Mithilfe des Caligari-Teams will das Redmonder Unternehmen die 3D-Funktionalität seines Online-Geodienstes Virtual Earth aufpeppen, um so besser mit Google Earth konkurrieren zu können. Wie viel sich Microsoft die Übernahme hat kosten lassen, ist nicht bekannt.

Der größte Teilchenbeschleuniger der Welt, der Large Hadron Collider (LHC) der Europäischen Organisation für Kernforschung (CERN), soll helfen, mehr über die Entstehung des Universums zu erfahren. Chaosforscher Professor Otto E. Rössler sieht im LHC aber eine Gefahr für die Erde, deren Untergang er einleiten könne. Alcatel-Lucent meldet Rekordverlust im vierten Quartal
Alcatel-Lucent hat im vierten Quartal 2007 nach Wertberichtigungen für einige Geschäftsaktivitäten einen Nettoverlust von 2,58 Milliarden Euro oder 1,14 Euro pro Aktie verzeichnet. BBCs iPlayer kommt dieses Jahr auf den Mac
Im Juni 2007 berichteten wir noch, dass die BBC die Mac-Version des iPlayer im Herbst des gleichen Jahres veröffentlichen wolle. Apple plant Specialveranstaltung am 26. Februar 2008
Irgendein Apple-Produkt wurde anscheinend zur Macworld im Januar nicht fertig, weshalb Apple für den 26. Februar 2008 ein Special-Event einberuft, auf dem eben dieses Produkt vorgeführt werden soll. Das zumindest berichten diverse Gerüchteseiten aus den USA, die außerdem über eine Einführung entweder des Penryn-basierten MacBook Pro spekulieren oder die schon für Februar angekündigte iPhone-Entwicklungsumgebung (SDK) erwarten.

Betriebssysteme werden bei Hacker-Wettbewerb getestet
Leopard, Windows und Linux sollen kommenden Monat auf der Cansecwest- Konferenz in einem Hacker-Wettbewerb in Bezug auf ihre Sicherheitslücken miteinander verglichen werden. "Derzeit wird viel darüber diskutiert, welches Betriebssystem am sichersten ist - Linux, Vista oder Leopard. Die Linux-Leute betreiben ihre eigene Propaganda, die Windows-Leute sagen mal dies und mal das, und die Leute von Apple stecken wie immer ihren Kopf in den Sand. Anhörung zu Microsofts Übernahmeangebot an Yahoo vertagt
Das erste und bisher einzige Regierungskomitee, das eine Anhörung bezüglich Microsofts 45-Milliarden-Dollar-Angebot an Yahoo angesetzt hat, wird diese nun vertagen. Nur Stunden, nachdem die Akquisitionspläne vergangenen Freitag die Runde machten, hat die Arbeitsgruppe für Kartellrecht des Rechtsausschusses im US-Abgeordnetenhaus eine Anhörung für den 8. IBMs Cell schrumpft auf 45nm – PS3 günstiger?

IBM, Sony and Toshiba have started to fabricate Cell processors in 65 nm and have already started work with 45 nm. They have already succeeded in the laboratory of running chips at 6 GHz and are not far from marketing them in Blade servers.
The PS3 will also benefit with 45 nm technology. Its chip, running at 3,2 GHz will consume 38% less energy and consequently have much less heat to dissipate.

Self-propelled glider uses ocean's heat to power itself

We've seen autonomous ocean gliders before, but the team at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute has just completed the first successful run of a glider that doesn't require its own power -- instead, it uses the the heat difference between the warm upper layers of the ocean and the colder depths to propel itself. Not needing an internal power source let the glider traverse the Virgin Islands Basin between St. Thomas and St. Croix at depths of 13,000 feet over 20 times when it was launched in December, and the team estimates that it could run for another six months if necessary. iPhone: Neuer Werbeclip - alte Firmware
The Great Thing nennt sich der neueste, letzte Nacht veröffentlichte Werbeclip für das iPhone, und dieser wurde offensichtlich aus altem und neuem Material zusammengeschnitten.
Während in der Eingangssequenz ein alter Home-Bildschirm, noch ohne die mehrere Seiten symbolisierenden Punkte an der Unterseite zu sehen ist, steht in den Safari-Demos das +-Zeichen für neue Lesezeichen bereits an seinem neuen Platz (das Symbol war vor dem 16. Januar oben links neben dem Adressfeld).

Another fault in Safari for the iPhone discovered
A new fault in Safari similar to the previous "TIFF" exploits has been discovered in the Safari browser of all firmwares.
It makes it possible to crash the application when executing a certain code.
At the moment it does not seem possible to do much else; however it may allow someone to jailbreak the iPhone as was possible with firmware 1.1.1.
But in that case, it would be the proof that one could exploit this fault and Apple would surely patch it quickly.

Apple Event: SDK am 26 Februar?
Der letzte Dienstag im Februar ist aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach Termin für das erste außerordentliche Apple Event in diesem Jahr. Laut dem amerikanischen Mac-Blog TUAW laufen im Apple-Umfeld entsprechende Vorbereitungen. Die Öffnung von iPhone und iPod touch für Programme von Drittentwicklern steht für diesen Monat auf dem Plan und so ist es durchaus wahrscheinlich, dass Apple-Boss Steve Jobs am 26. Februar das Entwicker-Kit zusammen mit den ersten neuen Anwendungen vorstellt.

Plextor releases two Blu-ray / HD DVD combo drives

Although we have hope that the format war is shuddering to a close, it's probably still wise to hedge your bets just a little -- and Plextor's got you covered with two new SATA Blu-ray / HD DVD combo drives. The new PX-B920SA writes to BD-R at 4x speeds, DVDs at 16x, and CD-Rs at 40x, and reads HD DVD, while the lower-end PX-B300SA drops the BD-R capabilities and just writes to DVD and CD. While browsing the 'net recently, we came across three separate DIY / mod articles (all stemming from our friends at Make) related to musical instruments, and realized that if combined it's almost a band (or at least the White Stripes). The first is a step-by-step guide to making your own Rock Band-esque drum triggers that can interface with your PC, allowing you to perform freestyle -- though you can still bang away at games with them. The second experiment lets you add USB to a standard electric guitar, thus enabling you to record directly out of your Firebird (or other axe) straight to disk, reducing your time in the studio and freeing up your schedule for rehab. Apple Event - End of February to announce SDK and applications
We've gotten reports as well as TUAW that there will be an Apple event tentatively scheduled for February 26th. The event will likely be the launch pad for the iPhone/iPod touch SDK and applications including Exchange support and Lotus Notes support.
