Apple's iPhone Activation Servers Again Experiencing Outage
Apple appears to be experiencing another problem with its systems today, as a number of MacRumors readers have reported they are unable to activate their new iPhones. Other reports are showing up on Twitter as the problems continue. News: Report: Vevo developing Apple TV music video app
Music video site Vevo is developing an Apple TV app that will play its 24/7 music video channel, according to AdAge. The app would play Vevo TV, a traditional music video channel that plays videos around the clock without letting viewers select which videos they want to watch. Vevo already has both a regular and iPad-only HD app for iOS. Neither Apple nor Vevo commented on the report.

Lavabit, Edward Snowden's email service of choice, shuts down
It looks like Edward Snowden is going to have to find a new email service as the one he supposedly used -- Lavabit -- has abruptly closed its doors. The company's owner, Ladar Levison, posted an open letter on the site today, saying, "I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people or walk away from nearly ten years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit." Apple adds movies in the cloud for Japan, others
Apple has continued their global expansion of iTunes in the Cloud for Movies with the addition of eight new markets for the service. Movie fans in Japan, Austria, Estonia, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Switzerland can now re-download they've previously purchased in iTunes from the cloud.
Since launching in 2011 as a music service iTunes in the Cloud has slowly expanded to cover new markets and services. New Nexus 7 reportedly coming to the UK August 28th
We were pleasantly surprised by the latest version of the Nexus 7, which landed in the US at the end of July. A little more patience has been required of Nexus fans on the other side of the pond, however, but the wait will soon be coming to an end. Vevo Working on Apple TV App for 24/7 Music Video Channel
Music video company Vevo is developing an app for the Apple TV, according to a report from AdAge. The app will show a 24/7 music video channel with ads made specifically for television rather than for streaming Internet video. Vevo launched Vevo TV this March as an alternative way to watch and discover music videos on its platform. Previously, users had to search for videos. Apple Planning New R&D Facility in Taiwan?
According to VR-Zone Chinese [Google Translation] (via BGR) Apple is currently recruiting a development team in Taiwan, in order to establish a new research and development facility. The Taiwan R&D center will supposedly focus its efforts on future iPhones, but may also work on other future products as well. Elago is a design company based in California that makes accessories for mobile devices. Its P2 (US$49.99) and M2 ($29.99) stands are designed to accommodate the iPad, iPad mini, iPhone and iPod touch.

Following yesterday's anti-iPad Surface RT ad, Microsoft today released another new advertisement, this time targeting Apple's iPad mini. In the spot, Microsoft compares the mini to the 8-inch Acer Iconia W3 tablet, which runs the full version of Windows 8. 1Password Available for $10 Off Through Mid-August [iOS Blog]
AgileBits is currently offering a significant discount on the iOS version of its secure password management app 1Password in order to encourage users who are still accessing the older version of the software to upgrade. Comcast releases DVR app for iOS to take on Sling, Tivo
Comcast has quietly snuck a new cloud-based DVR app into the iTunes store, according to Engadget. The app actually showed up back in July but is only being spotted now. The reason for that is because the app is companion software to a Comcast service that has not rolled out to a large audience yet. That service is called X2 and combines a set-top box with cloud storage to allow anyone to DVR their favorite shows and store them in the cloud.

Microsoft patent application details Illumiroom-like projection system
Normally, patent applications have us guesstimating at future implementations, but not so with this particular Microsoft filing. The USPTO doc, which surfaced just today and dates back to February 2012, has a very direct purpose: it uses two cameras to capture an environment, process the images and then spit 'em back out as a "integrated interactive space", or projection. T-Mobile USA Looking to Expand Apple Product Offerings Beyond the iPhone
Following his company's earnings release earlier today, T-Mobile USA CEO John Legere told AllThingsD that the carrier is looking forward to expanding its Apple product offerings beyond the iPhone. Back in April, T-Mobile became the last of the four major U.S. carrier to begin selling the iPhone.Legere said it is a good sign that the iPhone is only a portion of the company’s sales growth, accounting for just 21 percent of smartphone sales last quarter. “I think it’s a healthy percentage,” Legere said. Lodsys offers to settle patent dispute with fortunate developer
In May 2011, a largely unknown patent holding firm named Lodsys began threatening iOS developers with lawsuits if they didn't agree to license Lodsys patent portfolio which allegedly covered technology encompassing in-app purchases.
The case made headlines not only because Lodsys targeted many small developers who lacked the resources to adequately defend themselves, but also because of the patented technology involved. The ability for developers to implement in-app purchases comes from Apple and is an integral part of the iOS ecosystem. In other words, if Lodsys' claims were valid, they could theoretically shake down an endless number of iOS developers.

O2, Vodafone launching 4G in the UK on August 29
Up until now, those with an iPhone 5 or compatible iPad wanted 4G service in the UK could only get it from one provider: EE. But thankfully that will change at the end of the month, as O2 and Vodafone have announced they will be offering 4G service in the UK come August 29.
On O2, 4G will at first only be available in London, Leeds and Bradford, though the company plans additional city rollouts by the end of the year. iPhone boosts growth for T-Mobile
T-Mobile reported its Q2 2013 earnings results today and posted an increase of 1.1 million subscribers for the quarter. Impressively, 29% of T-Mobile's quarterly sales were attributable to the iPhone.
By way of comparison, the carrier lost 200,000 customers during the same quarter a year-ago.
The iPhone first arrived on T-Mobile in April of 2013 and was quick to make an impact. During the first three weeks of its availability, T-Mobile sold 500,000 units. T-Mobile CMO Mike Sievert even went so far as to call the launch "gangbusters".
For the entire quarter, T-Mobile sold 4.3 million smartphones, meaning that they sold 1.24 million iPhones altogether.

Lodsys Agrees to Dismiss Patent Case Against Small Developer for a Charitable Donation
Back in May 2011, patent holding firm Lodsys began threatening lawsuits against a number of small iOS developers, alleging infringement of a Lodsys-held patent through the use of Apple's in-app purchase and upgrade functionalities. The case was an interesting one because small developers were being held liable for their use of Apple's supported tools for iOS apps, with Apple agreeing to back the developers and claiming that Apple's existing license with Lodsys automatically extended to cover third-party developers using those tools. Dropbox API changes spell sync troubles for older 1Password iOS versions
Dropbox announced some time ago that it would be retiring its original sync API, and it is being officially put out to pasture on September 1st to introduce a new, more secure version. This is good news for a lot of users, but people still using apps that were built on that older API will likely find those apps won't work as expected after the September 1 cut off. This includes the older v3 version of 1Password for the iPhone/iPad and 1Password Pro for iOS. While the password manager will still work in other respects, Dropbox-powered sync won't function.
These apps were pulled from the iTunes store last year to make way for 1Password version 4, which means there is no mechanism to release an update for them, but there are still plenty of people using those previous

Book publishers also not happy with DOJ's proposal for Apple in e-book price fixing case
Following US District Judge Denise Cote's decision that Apple conspired with book publishers to raise the price of e-books, the DOJ last week announced a sweeping proposal aimed at remedying the fallout from Apple's allegedly "illegal" activities.

AppleCare bald mit 24 Stunden Online-Support?
Berichten von Insidern zufolge wird Apple in den kommenden Wochen den Service von AppleCare deutlich verbessern. Apple will angeblich ab dem 12. August den Online-Support rund um die Uhr verfügbar machen. Damit könnten sich Nutzer zu jeder Zeit an den Online-Support von Apple wenden. Das Veröffentlichungsdatum für den erweiterten Chat-Support könnte allerdings noch zurückgezogen werden, wie die Insider warnen.
Der erweiterte Online-Service soll den Nutzern von iOS- und Mac-Produkten zur Verfügung stehen. Wenn das Projekt erfolgreich verläuft, könnte Apple bald auch den Telefon-Support rund um die Uhr verfügbar machen, wie 9to5Mac spekuliert.

YouTube Gründer machen Mixbit: vine-artiges, anonymes Video-Sharing mit ein paar Extras

MixBit ist der neueste Wurf von Chad Hurley und Steve Chen, besser bekannt als die Gründer von YouTube. Es erlaubt ähnlich wie Vine das Aufzeichnen und Teilen von kurzen Videos (in diesem Fall 16 Sekunden) per iOS App. So weit so ähnlich, aber mit MixBit lassen sich die Videos auch editieren, außerdem kann das Material anderer User zu bis zu einer Stunde langen Werke geremixt werden. Ein weiterer Unterschied ist das Fehlen eines Kommentarsystems, außerdem sind die Uploads anonym. In den nächsten Wochen soll die App dann auch für Android kommen.

Instagram adds Video Imports, Automatic Straightening
Instagram for iOS has been updated with a pair of significant new features. First, the app supports importing videos from iOS's camera roll. Previously users would need to record a video to share with the service, but now they'll be able to choose any existing video in the camera roll -- even if it was shot using other apps.
This update also introduces an Automatic Straightening tool. If your photo is crooked on a horizontal line simply tap the Automatic Straightening tool button and the photo will be straightened. Tapping the tool also brings up the straightening slider, which allows the user to manually correct for a desired level.

Microsoft today continued its anti-iPad offensive with yet another commercial, this one highlighting the many differences between the Microsoft Surface RT and Apple's fourth generation iPad.
Per usual, the differences pointed out by the commercial aren't all that interesting and I sincerely doubt anyone would watch this commercial and feel compelled to abandon plans of an iPad purchase and head on over to the land of the Surface.
Somewhat amusing, though not terribly surprising given how the marketing world works, is that Microsoft boasts that a 32 GB Surface RT will cost you $349 while a 16 GB iPad will cost you $499. Apple baut das «iTunes in the Cloud»-Angebot in der Schweiz auf Filme aus. Mit der jüngsten, etwas kryptisch formulierten Anpassung der iTunes-AGB können auch Filme im Schweizer iTunes Store beliebig oft erneut heruntergeladen werden.
Bisher umfasste das «iTunes in the Cloud»-Angebot in der Schweiz nur Apps, Bücher und Musik-Titel und -Videos. Neu können nun also auch hierzulande mit einer Apple-ID gekaufte Filme beliebig oft erneut auf alle registrierten Geräte heruntergeladen werden.
Die Übersicht, in der Apple zeigt in welchen Ländern welche Cloud-Angebote verfügbar sind, wurde bis dato noch nicht aktualisiert. Wie Apple uns aber mitteilt, ist das Angebot neu neben der Schweiz auch in Italien, Österreich, Estland, Lettland, Litauen und Slowenien verfügbar.

Apples Smartphone-Marktanteil sinkt dramatisch
Obwohl Apple bei der Veröffentlichung der Quartalszahlen für das dritte Fiskalquartal 2013 die Erwartungen der Analysten zu den iPhone-Verkäufen übertroffen hat, ist Apples Marktanteil bei den auf Smartphones installierten mobilen Betriebssystemen im letzten Quartal gefallen. Gemäss den Zahlen von IDC hat Apple im Vergleich zum Vorjahr 20 Prozent des Marktanteiles bei den mobilen Betriebssystemen verloren. Der von IDC ermittelte Marktanteil sank von 16.6 Prozent im zweiten Quartal 2012 auf noch 13.2 Prozent im zweiten Quartal 2013. Die in der gleichen Zeitperiode erfolgte Steigerung des Absatzes von 26 Millionen verkauften iPhones auf 31.2 Millionen vermochte diesen Trend lediglich zu bremsen.

Apple verteilt neue OS X Mavericks und Mountain Lion Developer Preview
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute die fünfte Vorabversion von OS X Mavericks für die Entwickler zum Download freigegeben. Mit der heutigen Veröffentlichung hält Apple den gewohnten zweiwöchigen Veröffentlichungs-Rhythmus ein. Aus der Beschreibung der Beta-Version geht wie immer nicht klar hervor, welche Verbesserungen vorgenommen worden sind. Apple verspricht die Behebung von Fehlern sowie Stabilitätsverbesserungen.
Gemäss ersten Berichten enthält die neuste Vorabversion von OS X 10.9 erstmals auch «iBooks for Mac». Mit dieser App werden alle iBooks, welche man über iTunes gekauft hat, automatisch auch auf dem Mac verfügbar gemacht. T-Mobile gains 1.1 million customers in Q2 2013, ups revenue 20 percent to $6.3 billion

BeaverTap Games' Newest Platformer 'Mikey Hooks' Hits the App Store [iOS Blog]
BeaverTap Games, the studio behind the popular platformer Mikey Shorts, has today released a second game, Mikey Hooks. Mikey Hooks incorporates the platform-style gameplay of Mikey Shorts, but adds an intuitive grappling hook mechanic. As with the previous game, the goal is to get through each level as quickly as possible to earn three stars, which often means multiple plays of every stage to learn the ins and outs of enemy and obstacle locations. Netflix SuperHD, 3D streaming options pop up on Comcast, Verizon and other ISPs
Ever since Netflix introduced its SuperHD streaming with higher quality 1080p video and 3D support at CES in January, it's been restricted to only ISPs participating in its OpenConnect CDN program. Dropbox ending support for 1Password 3 in September
Dropbox has announced they will be ending their original sync API on September 1st to introduce a new, more secure, version. This is good news for a lot of users, but people still using apps that were built on that API will find those apps wont work after the September 1 cut off. This includes 1Password version 3 for the iPhone/iPad and 1Password Pro for iOS.
These apps were pulled from the iTunes store last year to make way for 1Password version 4, but there are still plenty of people using those original apps. To help soften the financial blow of buying 1Password again developer Agilebits has announced they will be running a sale on 1Password 4 for iOS starting at 8am Pacific time August 8.

IDC report: iPhone lost marketshare to Android in Q2 2013
According to a research report published by IDC today, Apple's share of the worldwide smartphone market took a slight dip during the second quarter of 2013.
IDC's press release reads in part:
The iOS decline in the second quarter aligns with the cyclicality of iPhone," says Ramon Llamas, Research Manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team. "Without a new product launch since the debut of the iPhone 5 nearly a year ago, Apple's market share was vulnerable to product launches from the competition. But with a new iPhone and revamped iOS coming out later this year, Apple is well-positioned to re-capture market share.

Das LG G2, Nachfolger des Optimus G, ist heute vorgestellt worden und unsere US-Kollegen konnten es sich mal kurz anschauen und sind vor allem vom Display begeistert: das 5,2-Zoll bietet brillante Farben, ohne übersättigt zu sein und ist mit 450 nits auch sehr hell. Auch das Konzept der Buttons (Lautstärke und Power Button) auf dem Rücken scheint aufzugehen, ist intuitiv bedienbar und sorgt für den extrem dünnen Rahmen. Die 13 Megapixel-Kamera ist nach erstem Ausprobieren auf jeden Fall der des HTC One und Galaxy S 4 ebenbürtig, wenn nicht überlegen. Publishers Who Settled In E-Book Antitrust Case File Objection to DOJ's Proposed Punishment for Apple
The five publishers who settled with the U.S. Government in the e-book antitrust case have filed an objection with the court arguing that the Department of Justice's proposed punishments for Apple would violate their settlement agreements from before the trial began, according to The Wall Street Journal. Outages effect App Store, iBookstore, Mac App Store, and iTunes for some users today
Users of Apple's various online stores including the App Store, Mac App Store, iTunes, and iBookstore saw outages today from 11:23 AM to 1:54 PM EST. According to Apple the outages only effected "some users," but those users were were unable to download previous purchased content or restore apps from iCloud.

Deus Ex: The Fall update supports iPad 2
Deus Ex: The Fall hit the App Store a few weeks back and instantly made headlines for an anti-piracy scheme whereby users with jailbroken iOS devices were precluded from playing the game, even if they spent the full US$6.99 to download it.
The developers were quick to respond to user outcry and promised that an impending update would soon change that.
