In May 2011, a largely unknown patent holding firm named Lodsys began threatening iOS developers with lawsuits if they didn't agree to license Lodsys patent portfolio which allegedly covered technology encompassing in-app purchases.
The case made headlines not only because Lodsys targeted many small developers who lacked the resources to adequately defend themselves, but also because of the patented technology involved. The ability for developers to implement in-app purchases comes from Apple and is an integral part of the iOS ecosystem.
