Google Keyboard 1.1 update adds long-press number row to tablets
If you own an Android tablet and have been wondering why in the Hades you haven't been able to type numbers on your stock keyboard by long-pressing the top row, it's time to take a quick peek to see if your fortunes have changed. 'ESPNews' and 'ESPN Deportes' Added to WatchESPN App on iOS and Apple TV [iOS Blog]
ESPN has added two new channels to its WatchESPN apps on the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, according to an ESPN press release. Fix for GoToMeeting issue with MacBook Air coming September 15
On August 23 we reported on issues Citrix GoToMeeting clients were having connecting the latest MacBook Air to the video conferencing service. At the time there was no firm time table for when a fix to the issue would be available.
Today I spoke with Sampath Gomatam, the VP and GM of Real-Time Collaboration at Citrix, the devision that handles the GoToMeeting software. He told me the issue was caused by a problem with how the video engine for the software worked with the video drivers of the new Macs. The company has escalated work on the patch due to online feedback. He also informed me that an update will be available to fix the issue on September 15.

Facebook releases cross-platform SDK for Unity titles, looks to boost 3D and mobile gaming

Flipboard competitor Material goes live
Flipboard (and Google Currents. et al) competitor Material has gone live in the App Store. From a quick glance, Material look like just another magazine-type newsreader, but Material has tackled one of the biggest annoyances about newsreaders that others haven't: the setup.
With most newsreaders, the first time you launch the app you need to tell it what types of news you are interested in and from what sources you like to get your news from. Material skips that mundane setup phase all together by bringing you the content you want to read straight away. It does this by scanning your Facebook and Twitter feeds and sees the types of articles you like to read and the people you are following and adjusts your preferences accordingly.

Twitter Updates iOS App With Conversation Redesign [iOS Blog]
Twitter has updated its iOS app to version 5.10, redesigning the look of Conversations within the app. As noted in the App Store description, conversations are easier to find, indicated with a vertical blue line in the Twitter timeline. The original tweet of a conversation will now show up above the most recent reply, and a tap will reveal the entire conversation thread. The app has also been updated with new notification settings and bug fixes for direct messages. Conversations have a new look! BBC iPlayer for iOS updated with AirPlay for downloads, improved search
Our big sister site Engadget is reporting today that the BBC iPlayer for iOS received a big update that will make it easier to watch your favorite shows even when your Internet connection is on the fritz.
The app update is limited to the UK version of the BBC iPlayer, but now supports AirPlay streaming of downloaded shows. If you've captured your favourite episodes of EastEnders or Doctor Who to your iOS device, you can blast 'em to your big screen via Apple TV even if your Internet connection is down.

Gmail for iOS updated with improved Drive integration and attachment viewing
This past June, Gmail launched its top-to-bottom redesign of its iOS app, but that doesn't mean it can't already be improved. Google has released Version 2.4 of the email app, bringing it with the addition of increased integration with Drive and Google+. Now when you send a link in-app to one of those platforms those links will open in their respective apps. This will be particularly useful when sharing documents and spreadsheets from one Drive to another.
If for some savage reason you'd rather keep these links opening up in the web you can update the app's settings. But why would you do such things?

Apple reportedly planning new Apple Store for Japan
It's been seven years since the last Apple Store in Japan opened, odd considering the technical bent of the country's inhabitants and the fact that the first international Apple Store was located in Japan. Now ifoAppleStore is reporting that another store may be on the way to Tokyo by early 2014.

Nintendo 2DS: 3D raus, Preis runter, Daumen hoch

Hoppla, damit war nun wirklich nicht zu rechnen. Nintendo bringt mit dem 2DS einen neuen Handheld auf den Markt. Weg ist das Scharnier des 3DS, weg der Klappmechanismus. Verschwunden ist auch die 3D-Funktionalität. Kompatibilitäts-Probleme bei Spielen sind jedoch nicht zu erwarten. Alles soll funktionieren, nur eben "flacher" aussehen. Am 12. Oktober soll der Verkauf beginnen - auch bei uns. Preislich liegt das Gerät deutlich unter dem 3DS, in Dollar gemessen stehen 129 gegen 169.
Kaufen kann man den 2DS in zwei Farbkombinationen: schwarz-blau und weiß-rot. Eine 4GB-Speicherkarte ist ebenfalls dabei.

1/3 Scale Classic Macintosh Made With Raspberry Pi [Mac Blog]
John Leake, co-host of the RetroMacCast, has crafted a 1/3 scale miniature replica of the Mac Plus (via Cult of Mac). The computer, which he calls the "Mini Mac", is made from a Raspberry Pi, PVC, and a Linux-based Mac emulator running System 6. The mini computer's casing was created from sheets of 3M Sintra PVC plastic, which were shaped with an X-Acto knife and then sanded. The monitor is a 3.5-inch composite LCD panel, held in with two brackets and velcro, and it all runs on a Raspberry Pi. It also includes Wi-Fi, an HDMI port, two USB ports, with a Bluetooth dongle to be added in the future.

Court: Apple needs monitoring after "blatant" ebook price fixing
Following Judge Denise Cote's ruling that Apple conspired with book publishers to increase the price of e-books across the board, the DOJ put forth a proposal intent on rectifying the damage caused by Apple's actions.
The proposal was extremely far reaching, and called for Apple to allow competitors like Amazon to include links to their own e-book stores from within their iOS apps. The proposal also suggested a court-appointed monitor should be hired to keep an eye on Apple's activities and to ensure that the company doesn't run afoul of antitrust laws going forward. What's more, the proposal also called for Apple to hire an internal antitrust compliance officer to train and educate Apple executives about the ins and outs of antitrust laws.

Dollar Store Accessories: Flip stand case
Not every Dollar Store accessory is going to be a great success and, sadly, this case with a built-in stand was an utter piece of crap.
I selected it for review because I rather liked the notion of a flip stand, especially for watching YouTube videos and the like.
The case clicked onto my 4S easily. Taking it off, however, was a bit of a nightmare -- the rigid case hugged my phone, making it really hard to find a way to remove it without destroying my device.
And that stand? Useless. When installed on my 4S, I could not get that cursed stand to flip up. Although it was easy to manipulate when off the phone (basically you push it out from the inside), in its intended use, I could not get it open.

Nintendo announces 2DS handheld gaming system, $129 on October 12
Well, this is certainly a surprise. While the other big names in gaming are rolling out their new home consoles, Nintendo's bringing a new handheld to the table. Called the 2DS, it looks like a 3DS laid flat without the hinge, and, of course, no three dimensional graphics. IGN reports that the 2DS will come in red and blue and will cost $129 when it arrives on October 12. Apple acquires AlgoTrim
AllThingsD is reporting confirmation by Apple that the company has acquired a Swedish data compression company by the name of AlgoTrim.
As usual, Apple spokeswoman Kirstin Huguet trotted out the familiar line "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."
So, what is known about AlgoTrim? The Malmō, Sweden-based company was founded in 2005 by Anders Berglund, Anders Holtsberg, and Martin Lindberg, and develops data compression technology to shorten processing times and reduce file size. New Survey Reveals iOS Remains Top Priority for Mobile Developers, but Android Seeing Broader Support [iOS Blog]
According to a new survey from research firm Forrester (via TechCrunch), Apple's iOS phone platform remains the highest priority for mobile software development teams, followed by the Android phone platform and the iOS tablet platform in second and third place respectively. The survey was done by asking 765 software developers creating mobile applications, and addressed not only iOS and Android but also platforms such as Windows Phone and Blackberry 10. But while the survey shows that the iPhone remains the highest priority for developers, it also shows that more developers target Android phones somewhere in their plans, with 84% of developers planning Android phone support compared to the iPhone at 77%. Eddy Cue verkauft im grossen Stil Apple-Aktien
Aus einem Bericht der US-Börsenaufsicht SEC geht hervor, dass Apples Internet- und Dienste-Chef Eddy Cue von seinen insgesamt 100’000 im September 2011 gewährten Optionen 50’000 in Aktien umgewandelt hat. Von diesen 50’000 Aktien verkaufte Eddy Cue insgesamt 24’580 Aktien zu einem Kurs von 504.18 US-Dollar. Der Apple-Manager verkaufte somit Aktien im Gesamtwert von 12.39 Millionen US-Dollar. Die restlichen 25’420 Aktien wurden von der SEC zurückbehalten, um die fälligen Steuern zu bezahlen. Diese zurückbehaltenen Aktien wurden zu einem Kurs von 501 US-Dollar verkauft.
Der zweite Teil von Eddy Cues Optionspaket wird gemäss dem Bericht der SEC im nächsten August auslaufen. Erst dann kann Cue die restlichen Optionen in Aktien umtauschen und wieder verkaufen.

Omni Group releases OmniKeyMaster OS X app for discounted upgrades of apps bought in the Mac App Store
The Omni Group, makers of the popular productivity apps like OmniFocus, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, and OmniPlan have released a small, free OS X app that allows users who have previously purchased versions of its software through the Mac App Store to qualify for upgrade purchasing through the company's web store for the next version of its apps.
Called OmniKeyMaster, the app works by searching your hard drive for Omni app from the Mac App Store. It then lets you purchase the newest version of the app at upgrade pricing. As Omni Group explains on their website:

Tipp: Neuer Effekt: Fenster ins Dock «saugen» lassen
Im Dock-Panel der Systemeinstellungen stehen für den «Effekt beim Ablegen» von Fenstern zwei Optionen zur Verfügung — «Trichter» (Standard) und «Linear». Es gibt aber eigentlich noch einen dritten Effekt «Saugen». Dieser Effekt ist zwar seit jeher Bestandteil von OS X, aus welchem Grund auch immer hat ihn Apple aber bis dato nie über die Einstellungen zur Verfügung gestellt. Über ein Terminal-Befehl lässt sich der neue Effekt aber einfach aktivieren:
defaults write com.apple.com mineffect -string suck
Nach dem Ausführen des Befehls muss das Dock neugestartet werden — z.B. über den Terminal-Befehl killall Dock. Nach dem Dock-Neustart ist der neue Saug-Effekt bereits aktiviert — ab sofort werden Fenster beim Ablegen regelrecht ins Dock gesaugt.

Tipp: OS-X-Effekte in Slow-Motion
In OS X gibt es mancherorts nach einem Klick oder einem Ausführen einer Funktion eine kurze Animation für das bessere Verständnis was denn nun genau im System geschieht. Hält man während dem Klicken bzw. Funktion-Ausführen die ⇧-Taste gedrückt, wird die darauf folgende Animation ganz langsam ausgeführt.
So lässt sich zum Beispiel das Ablegen von Fenstern in das Dock oder das Aktivieren der Exposé-Funktionen in Mission Controll dank gedrücktem ⇧ in Slow Motion geniessen.
Diese Slow-Motion-Anzeige gibt es übrigens bereits seit der aller ersten Version von OS X. Der damalige Apple-CEO Steve Jobs demonstrierte im Januar 2000 mit einer Vorabversion von Mac OS X die neue Benutzeroberfläche «Aqua». Jobs wollte insbesondere auf das neue Aussehen des Systems hinweisen und nutzte zur Demonstration der Animationen die Slow-Motion-Funktion.

Rovio teases 'Angry Birds Go' racing game in new trailer
Rovio has released a short live-action teaser trailer for the next game in its never-ending Angry Bird series. However, unlike other Angry Birds games, Angry Birds Go appears to be a go kart racing game. Though the teaser doesn't reveal much about the upcoming game, it does take the piss out of other popular gaming formats such as "runner" games like Temple Run. The teaser also reveals that Rovio is working with energy drink maker RedBull on Angry Birds Go. RedBull has backed several racing-style games already in the App Store.

Analyst: Mac verliert gegenüber Windows an Attraktivität
Analyst Charlie Wolf von «Needham & Co.» hat in einer neuen Studie die Absatz-Entwicklung bei der Mac-Plattform genauer untersucht. Besonders interessierte den Analyst der Umstand, dass der Mac-Absatz im Vergleich zum gesamten PC-Markt weniger stark rückläufig ist. Apple verkaufte im zweiten Quartal 2013 6.6 Prozent weniger Macs, während der globale PC-Absatz um 11.2 Prozent zurückging.

Apple TV: Neue Sender für Nutzer in den USA
Apple hat im Verlauf des gestrigen Tages ein Over-the-Air-Update für Apple TV veröffentlicht, welches Nutzern in den USA eine erweiterte Senderauswahl zur Verfügung stellt. tadaa 3D doesn't create real 3D images, but it can bring some depth to your photos and the result will likely delight friends and family.
The US$3.99 app is disarmingly simple to use. You can snap a photo from within the app, or create a depth image from your photo library. Judge in Apple e-book case says she'll avoid unnecessary intrusion into business as part of remedy
Judge Denise Cote on Tuesday put to rest concerns that Apple's looming punishment for colluding with book publishers might encroach upon other facets of the company's business.
In the wake of Apple's guilty verdict for conspiring to raise the price of e-books, you might recall that one of the DOJ's proposed remedies included a sweeping proposal that would have enabled book retailers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble to provide links to e-books from within their own e-book apps. This, of course, runs counter to Apple's App Store guidelines as it skirts around Apple's 30 percent cut.
In its reply brief, Apple argued that the DOJ's remedies were unreasonably broad, draconian and punitive.

Clash of Clans developer reconsiders iOS exclusivity
Having already made it big in the free-to-play scene on iOS with Clash of Clans, Finnish app development house Supercell may be headed to Android in the hopes of scoring further success overseas.
