Manual leaks for Sony's QX10 and QX100 lens cameras, fills in more pieces of the puzzle

Geekbench 3 update for iOS and OS X released

Primate Labs has released Geekbench 3 today with new tools for iOS, OS X, Windows, and Android. This marks the first major upgrade for Geekbench in six years. The update introduces new benchmark tests modeled after current processor-intensive tasks and covering encryption, image processing, physics simulations, and signal processing. Geekbench 3 also features 12 completely rewritten benchmark tests from the previous edition of the program. These tests have been updated to better reflect usage scenarios of real world applications. To analyze all this information, a reworked scoring system has been added, breaking single-core and mulit-core performance out into two separate categories. Sadly this means that Geekbench 3 scores are no longer comparable to Geekbench 2 score

Editor's Letter: Is Hyperloop loopy, or the future of public transportation?

In each issue of Distro, Executive Editor Marc Perton publishes a wrap-up of the week in news. If you can say one thing about Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla Motors, it's that he thinks big. After making his fortune by selling his online payments company to PayPal, he's focused on creating entirely new industries, including commercial rocketry and electric cars. Researchers Show How Apple's App Approval Process Can Be Beaten by Malicious Apps

Researchers from Georgia Tech submitted to the App Store and received approval for a malicious app, according to Technology Review. The researchers submitted an innocuous app that included inactive malware-type code hidden from Apple's app approval system. When downloaded onto a test device after the app was approved, the app 'phoned home' and gained a variety of abilities that compromised the host phone. This malware, which the researchers dubbed Jekyll, could stealthily post tweets, send e-mails and texts, steal personal information and device ID numbers, take photos, and attack other apps. It even provided a way to magnify its effects, because it could direct Safari, Apple’s default browser, to a w

How Steve Jobs was able to negotiate a revenue sharing agreement with AT&T

Forbes has an extremely interesting article detailing how the negotiating prowess of Steve Jobs helped Apple secure, for a short time, a revenue sharing agreement with AT&T along with a host of other perks that carriers had previously been staunchly opposed to. The following Steve Jobs anecdotes come courtesy of Raj Aggarwal, a telecommunications consultant who, in the months preceding the iPhone announcement, met with Steve Jobs twice a week. Aggarwal relays that Jobs was able to secure terms that other handset manufacturers couldn't because he was obsessively involved with every detail s

ThirdLove iPhone app accurately calculates bras size with just a few pics

A NASA scientist has developed an iPhone app called ThirdLove that can precisely calculate a woman's bra size from just a few pictures of the woman's chest. It then uses visualization technology to read the photos and return the precise bra size that user needs. Women can then shop directly though the app for bras that fit them. That app may seem like a silly idea, but as co-founder Heidi Zak told VentureBeat, there is a very real need for it in the undergarments marketplace: "The number one reason people return products that they buy online is due to fit. Stack printer concept ditches the tray, eats columns of paper instead

Let's face it: even clever 2D printers aren't usually fun to watch. Mugi Yamamoto's Stack concept livens things up a bit, however. Apple appears to be turning its attention to China, with over 200 job openings appearing in the last several weeks on LinkedIn. With the Chinese government and state-run media focusing on environmental and workplace issues at Foxconn facilities where Apple products are manufactured, and attacks earlier this year over warranty policies that allegedly discriminated against Chinese customers

Case alleging Apple has monopoly over the App Store dismissed on procedural grounds

In 2011, a group of attorneys filed a bizarre lawsuit against Apple alleging that Apple holds a monopoly over the App Store to the extent any one who wants to purchase an iOS app must go through Apple's App Store. Consequently, the lawsuit took umbrage with the fact that developers wishing to sell iOS apps were forced to fork over 30% of their profits to Apple. On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that a Judge dismissed the case on procedural grounds. No comment: "Let's build a statue of Steve Jobs"

OK, so I lied. I am going to make a comment: this is one of the most inane crowdfunding projects ever. A group is seeking US$50,000 on Indiegogo to build a statue of Steve Jobs to be located "somewhere in the Bay Area." That $50K figure is based on a life-sized statue of El Jobso, but the people behind this project have big dreams and with tongues firmly implanted in cheek, say that if funding is beyond their wildest dreams they'll "aim for Statue of Libery and Colossus of Rhodes proportions." So, what do you get as perks at various funding levels? $100 will get you a copy of Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs, which you can buy in hardback for about $21 on Amazon. For $200, you get a black turtleneck shirt for "Jobs' signature

Apple Unexpectedly Seeds iOS 7 Beta 6 to Developers

The update is available as an over-the-air update to existing beta testers and it can also be downloaded via Apple's Developer Center. It was reported earlier today that Beta 6 would be released next week, roughly two weeks after the release of Beta 5; however, the odd timing of this release -- Apple traditionally releases new iOS betas to developers on Monday mornings -- along with its small size, only 13.5MB on an iPhone 5, suggests that it could be some kind of urgent bug fix. Design Like most of ECOXGEAR's accessories, the ECOROX is made to take life's little drops and falls and shrug them off. The case is encased in a thick dark grey rubber shell, with metal grilles on the top and front that come in red, orange, and black. How waterproof is the ECOROX? Well, it exceeds the IPX7 standards for water immersion (up to 1 meter) and shock resistance. You probably won't have to test the immersion standards, because the ECOROX floats. As you can imagine, the iPad's dominant market share made the contest rather one-sided in some cases, but there are still some pretty interesting tidbits to be gleaned here. For starters, in a ranking of tablets based on the number of views each device received in "review" and "unboxing" videos, Google's Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 lead the charge, with the iPad mini coming in 4th and the standard iPad landing in 8th place.
