Kids under 13 with approved educational accounts can now access the iTunes Store
Macworld reports that Apple on Thursday made a slight adjustment to its iTunes Terms and Conditions. Under the new T&C, children under the age of 13 can now have their own iTunes account with access to applications and book services if their Apple ID was provided at the bequest of an educational institution.
iTunes accounts were previously limited to children aged 13 and up, but with the impending release of iOS 7, Apple noted that schools will now be able to "facilitate Apple obtaining verifiable parental consent for personal Apple IDs for students under age 13."

Obama Administration Vetoes Partial Ban on Apple Products
The Obama administration has vetoed a partial ban on the import and sale of some Apple products which was granted back in June in response to a ruling made by the USITC (United States International Trade Commission). The ban, which applied to AT&T models of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, and the 3G models of the iPad and the iPad 2, was granted after the USITC found that the aforementioned products infringed on a Samsung patent, specifically Patent No. 7,706,348, titled "Apparatus and method for encoding/decoding transport format combination indicator in CDMA mobile comm

Obama administration vetoes ITC import ban on older iPhones and iPads
As reported by the Wall Street Journal, the Obama administration vetoed the International Trade Commission ban on older model Apple iPads and iPhones. The ITC ordered the ban after it found Apple infringed on a Samsung patent.
In his letter to the Chairman of the ITC, U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman focused on the issue of the fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing of standards essential patents (SEPs). He writes that "licensing SEPs on FRAND terms is an important element of the Administration's policy of promoting innovation and economic progress."

Apple calls DOJ proposal "draconian", "punitive", and "wildly out of proportion"
In the wake of US District Judge Denise Cote's ruling that Apple colluded with book publishers to raise the price of e-books, the DOJ yesterday issued a proposal aimed at remedying the alleged damage caused by Apple.
To say that the DOJ proposal is harsh and curiously overbroad would be an understatement. The proposal calls for Apple to put an immediate end to its existing agency-model contracts with book publishers. It also would preclude Apple from "entering into agreements with suppliers of e-books, music, movies, television shows or other content that are likely to increase the prices at which Apple's competitor retailers may sell that content."

Seit John Browett im Oktober 2012 seinen Posten als SVP of Retail bei Apple aufgeben musste, ist die Retail-Abteilung ohne wirkliche Führung. Live ab 21 Uhr: Roboter Kiboro wird auf die ISS geschickt (Videos)

Ein weiterer Roboter startet in Richtungr ISS: Kiboro ist zwar weniger zweckorientiert als das Arbeitstier Robonaut, kann dafür aber japanisch sprechen und soll sich mit dem japanischen Astronauten Koichi Wakata unterhalten, der sich im November auf den Weg zur ISS macht. Kirobo wird mit dem HTV-4 vom Tanegashima Space Center starten, das vor allem dreieinhalb Tonnen Nachschub auf die ISS bringen soll. One easy step to writing better bug reports
As someone who uses a lot of different software and tends to find a lot of 'edge cases' I often find myself emailing software developers or filling out support tickets to either ask a question or report a problem. I know it would be helpful to include information about my Mac (both the hardware and the operating system) as well as precise information about the version of the software that I'm using.
But, to be honest, I'm often too lazy to include it.
Instead I tell them that I'm using the "latest version" of Mac OS X and the "latest version" of their software. But am I? Facebook wants you to know it's taking security seriously -- enough for Zuckerberg and Co. to pay out over $1 million in reward within two years for its Bug Bounty program. The Drowning is a first-person shooter set in a post apocalyptic world where grotesque creatures that used to be human now roam, and your objective is it take out these monsters while gathering supplies. Catch Notes to hang up its boots on August 30th

DOJ proposes contract terminations, App Store rule changes, in Apple ebook case
The Department of Justice on Friday, which last month won its case against Apple over ebook price-fixing, issued its proposed remedy to address Apple's guilt, in conjunction with 33 state attorneys-general. That remedy, the DOJ says, "is intended to halt Apple's anticompetitive conduct, restore lost competition, and prevent a recurrence of the illegal activities." Apple allowing pre-teen edu-only Apple IDs as part of iPad push
In an effort to further promote and support the iPad for students, the company is bending a rule that children under 13 can't have Apple ID accounts and allowing schools and "approved educational institutions" to create accounts for students under the age limit. Children between 13 and 18 are now requested to review the terms and conditions with parents or guardians when creating an account. In order for schools to implement Apple IDs for kids under 13, the institution must obtain the students' parent's consent.

Apple execs given new responsibilities, Bob Mansfield to focus on chips
When Apple executive Bob Mansfield left the company's executive team unexpectedly at the end of July, we wondered what his next move would be. 9to5Mac is reporting that Mansfield left his leadership capacity to refocus his efforts on chipset design for future products.
Mansfield's new position is in a "special projects" capacity under the supervision of CEO Tim Cook. His old job as Senior Vice President of Technologies will be split into two positions, Hardware and Operations, with Dan Riccio and Jeff Williams heading those jobs respectively.

Report: iPhone saved T-Mobile from losing up to 400,000 customers
A study by the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) suggests that something between 300,000 and 400,000 current T-Mobile customers would have left the company for other providers had it not finally reached a deal with Apple to carry the iPhone. In addition, a poll taken just before the iPhone arrived on the US's fourth-largest carrier indicated that up to one quarter of all T-Mobile customers planned to get an iPhone as their next phone, suggesting that there would have been an even larger migration had the deal not happened.
