Web versions of iWork available on iCloud beta site for some users

Apple launched the developer beta for the new online iCloud based iWork tools this past June, including Numbers, Pages, and Keynote. Today we've noticed that some users have been able to login to the system and try out the new features. Access seems to be randomly available with some people, such as myself, still being told they need a developer ID to gain access. The new iCloud versions of these apps take aim at other cloud based office tools like Google Docs and Microsoft's new Office 365, and can be used on a Mac or PC. Even if you're not a developer it might be worth trying your luck. You might be pleasantly surprised to find yourself with access -- but do keep in mind it is a beta.

Twitter outlines new model for targeted ads

To address the issue, the service is toying around with a more targeted program, offering up ads to users from those businesses and brands they've shown an interest in. Rather than simply targeting mentions on the service, the new model utilizes browser cookie IDs and scrambled email addresses, so those who've actually visited that site are more likely to get ads from it. DevJuice: Supporting the iPad 1

iOS adoption outpaces every other mobile family out there. As iMore reports, 93% of customers have upgraded to iOS 6.x. Just 1% remain on older operating systems. So why do developers obsess on iOS 5? The iPad 1. It's the little iOS that can. And does. And keeps doing. Devs continue selling apps targeted to the original iPad and they don't want to cut away an important portion of their market. I'm told over and over again, "If I go to Auto Layout, I can no longer build for iOS 5." A loyal base of iPad 1 users means developers hesitate to move their code base into modern technologies and that's a shame. Sadly, Apple doesn't allow devs to fork apps. Imagine freez

Microsoft ties Bing Ads into Windows 8.1 Smart Search

With Windows 8.1, Microsoft made a significant change to the way users search: it unified the experience to include web, cloud, app and system results. Now, the company's putting something else into Smart Search: Bing Ads. It's okay if this strikes you as a bit troubling -- most users are accustomed to seeing ads display within browser-based search, not OS-driven queries. But that's t

Samsung believes that Apple's new damages expert hired after the death of Terry Musika is using faulty assumptions to stack the deck in Apple's favor.

The iPhone takes top spot in South Korean customer satisfaction

A new survey of 44,168 smartphone owners in South Korea has revealed that in terms of customer satisfaction, their favorite smartphone is Apple's iPhone, reports local site Naver. The result, an acutely embarrassing loss for native Korean firm Samsung, saw Apple get the nod for the best after-sale support as well. The iPhone was also higher ranked for Apple's speed in fixing any devices that needed repairs, and the survey also noted that iPhones were the least likely to need repairs in the first place.

Onswipe: developer, tester interest in iOS 7 beta very high

Mobile web advertising and optimizing company Onswipe is reporting that interest in the iOS 7 beta is growing at a furious pace, with three quarters of a percent of the iPhone user base already running the software in beta. The figures represents at a minimum more than two million iPhones, far higher than those running the iOS 6 beta at the same point in its development cycle. While some of that figure may be users who have pirated the (notoriously unstable and buggy) beta, most is believed to be developers who need to match their apps to iOS 7's new look.

The iPhone 5 has decided to refuse to start up normally. It has gone into a continuing loop of trying to start up, then rebooting, ad infinitum. Sad, really -- I was planning on shooting a ton of panoramas with the iPhone 5, and I took some wonderful photos from the airplane on the way over. My only choice with this device is to wait until I get back home and then reload the device with a fresh image of iOS 7. Sigh. At least I have my wife's iPhone as a backup for shooting those panoramas. Day two, spouse and I -- both avid photographers -

Snuglet Kickstarter Project Aims to Secure Loose MagSafe 2 Cables [Mac Blog]

Apple's MagSafe 2 power adapter, which was introduced alongside the Retina MacBook Pro in 2012, reincorporates the T-shaped connector design that was previously abandoned for an "L" style MagSafe connector due to issues with the strain that the "T" style connector placed on the power adapter cable. To combat cable strain with the T-shaped MagSafe 2, Apple designed the connector to pull away from the MacBook when even slight amounts of pressure are applied to the cable, resulting in frequent and unintentional cable disconnections. The Snuglet, a newly introduced Kickstarter project, aims to keep MagSafe 2 power adapter cables securely fastened to MacBooks by incorporating a small ring that increases the connector's magnetic connection.
